SHELTONMASONCOUNTY

2018 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Heidi McCutcheon | Chamber Director

Although spring has just begun, we are already looking forward to the sunshiny season of summer and the fun-filled festivities it brings to Shelton and Mason County year in and year out.  I love that Mason County has staple events during summer that the community anxiously awaits, like Mason County Forest Festival (May 31-June 3), The Hardware Distillery's Fjordin Crossin (June 23), Relay For Life (June 23-24), the Business Expo & Bite of Mason County (July 20), Smoking Mo's Brew & Que Summer Block Party (September 1), and many more.

The featured breweries include new Chamber member Keyhole Valley Brewing as well as Anderson Valley, Backwoods Brewing Company, Bent Bine Brewing Co., Cascade Lakes Brewery, East2West Brewing, Georgetown Brewing, Hop Valley Brewing, Lost Coast Brewing, New Belgium, Rouge Ales, as well as Belching Beaver and Schilling Cideries, with more to come.

This year, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber presents a new friend into the summer event circle, the Blues and Brews Festival.   The Chamber's inaugural Blues and Brews Festival will take place June 16 on Evergreen Square in downtown Shelton from 12:00 - 5:00 PM. The celebration will play host to 12 Pacific Northwest breweries, a few cideries, food trucks, and, most importantly, some of the best blues bands around!

The event, spearheaded by Smoking Mo's Tom Beben, will also offer delicious food from some of your favorite local joints, including Tempting Eats & Treats and Kern's Kitchen & Catering. And what is a blues festival without the blues? Performing at the event will be several of the best blues and bluegrass bands in the region, so you can get your groove on.

Expanding Resources to Give Back Will Johnson | 2018 President of the Chamber Board

President, Cogent Construction Inc. Commercial & Residential Roofing 2017 was a great year for the Chamber. We had a strong leader in John Lester, who had many incredible successes. I have always said that the greatest test of leadership is to lead a group of volunteers. When you have no authority but only influence you have to be an above quality leader and John did so in his term with excellence. My wife Dee and I own Cogent Construction Inc., a roofing company that we opened in 2002 with less than $300 in our household checking, but with an overwhelming will for success and love for hard work. We now have ten employees and work all across Mason County and even the Western half of the state. Over the many years, I have been coached and mentored by countless great

leaders and I hope to bring their excellence while leading the Chamber in 2018. 2018 has already proved to be a whirlwind. With the former city manager resigning and the city council election speeding ahead; it’s been a bit like drinking water from a fire hose. But I found that I truly enjoy it. From troubleshooting personalities to experiencing firsthand the lobbying that

the Chamber does behind the scenes on behalf of the 6,000 Mason County employees we represent. Leading the charge has been fun, complex, exciting, and invigorating. Our business community is made up of individuals that want to earn a fair living, provide excellence, have great employees, and watch their children grow up in our community. We have an amazing group of people pulling for Mason County. Our Chamber has a pretty good track record. On page 8 you’ll see what the Chamber accomplished last year as well as this year’s goals. We have three main areas of focus that will define everything that we do this year; those areas are to increase membership, reevaluate everything we do, and to fully staff the Chamber office. For the sake of this message, I’ll focus on just one: increasing membership. By increasing membership, we increase our presence in the community. It’s been said that you can’t give away what you don’t have, so in order for us to greater serve our community in this time of growth we are looking to expand our presence, thus expanding our resources to give back. This allows us to share the load when it comes to community projects like downtown flower baskets and Christmas decorations.

Increased membership also helps strengthen our voice in advocacy. There have been many times in the past few years that we have worked hand in hand with city hall to bring things like outdoor cafés to fruition. We’ve also heavily weighed in on building fee increases, lent our voice to attain grant funding, and encouraged the commission to move forward with economic development planning. We have also continued our efforts in workforce development programs starting with our youth. These are just a few of the reasons why I encourage you to join us. If you are a business owner, dues begin at just $15 a month. The cost is not high on your end, but the benefit that it brings to our community is incredible. If you don’t have a business, are retired, or are just looking for a way to become involved, joining as a friend of the Chamber is little more than $100 annually. If you want to know more about what being a Chamber member means and the benefits that come along with it, I’ll help fill you in. Give us a call at (360) 426-2021 and we’ll help you become the newest member of our 400 strong businesses.

Night of Awards Honors Best of Mason County Friday, January 12 marked the celebration of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce's 95th year and the Annual Awards Gala.  Nearly 350 of Mason County's business owners, professionals, elected officials, and non-profit employees gathered to celebrate the successes of 2017. The event began with a word from the sponsors, which began with an epic "Ode to 2017" performed by Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance and SPD Chief Darrin Moody who rapped it to the tune of "Tricky" by Run DMC. The guests then heard from the evening's Premier Sponsor, Little Creek Casino Resort's CEO Mark West who welcomed the crowd and shared a little of what's to come for the property, including a tap room and sports bar. Next up, media sponsor Kelsie Smith from The Shopper addressed the crowd as did photo sponsor Forrest Cooper of Cooper Studios, who set up a photo booth, much to the crowd's pleasure. Chamber executive

director Heidi McCutcheon briefly reviewed five of the 2017 top successes. As the courses were served, Mason County District Court Judge Victoria Meadows invited the 2018 Chamber Board of Trustees to the stage for the formal installation. outgoing President of the Board John Lester thanked Past President Jennifer Owens for her years of service on the board and presented her with a gift. To end out the night, John and Heidi announced the award nominees and announced the winners, beginning with the President's Choice Award winner, now the late Ron Pannell.

Dawn Pannell accepts Presidents Choice Award on behalf of husband, Ron Pannell

"In 1976 our country celebrated its 200th birthday. Shelton turned 86 and the Chamber was 54. That was when Mason County got its first paramedic. This paramedic is the same man who has volunteered more hours to our community since he retired than he while he was actually working. He has helped save our Christmas Decorations, has worked every OysterFest, helps with downtown flower baskets, has impacted thousands of children's lives and picked up perhaps a ton of trash on his own. He is known to many as Mr. Kiwanis. The 2017 President's Choice Award Winner is Ron Pannell." CITIZEN OF THE YEAR recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large.  This person gives freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. Our great thanks and appreciation goes to nominees Eileen Bailey, Nicole Frazier, and Rob Wilson-Hoss, who won the award. His passion is endless and his commitment to this community will live long into our future. Rob has shown he is a true visionary and his current project [the YMCA] is yet another example of that.

Rob Wilson-Hoss

A partner at Hoss & WilsonHoss, LLP, Rob Wilson-Hoss has practiced law in Mason County since 1978. He has been recognized countless times with awards and accolades including the three major awards from Washington’s Bar Association. Moreover, Rob is well known for his selfless service. He served in the US Peace Corps, participated in the establishment of the Northwest Intertribal Court System, and was instrumental in the formation of local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Mason County Shelter, and Turning Pointe. Now, after more than 25 years advocating for a YMCA, he has successfully led the project to become a reality. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR  recognizes an individual who has largely contributed to the Chamber's programs and activities. This person must serve on one or more Chamber

committees. Making the short list of people who give their time, talents, energies, and expertise were Julie Nichols of Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP, Lisa Perry of Sierra Pacific Industries, and Darren Eisele of Hood Canal Communications, who won this year's award. Darren Eisele is a familiar face to many in Mason County. He is an active member and volunteer for numerous community organizations. Darren is described as “positive, supportive and someone who serves his organization and our community very well.” As the son of small business owners, an entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to serve others was instilled in him at an early age. Darren has been a faithful employee at HCC for more than fifteen years; happily serving in a field he is passionate about. Since his promotion in 2012 to Director of Marketing and PR, he has increased his reach in the local community, serving the Chamber on both the Business Expo and Ambassadors Committees, and he volunteers locally with United Way and Forest Festival. He and his wife Arleta are raising their two sons in this community, contributing to Mason County’s future.

Business of the Year recognizes the company that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Shelton and Mason County business

community. Any size business is eligible; recognition is given for overall contributions to improving our community and/or business climate. This business must be a member in good standing of the SheltonMason County Chamber of Commerce and should be headquartered in Mason County. Our great thanks and appreciation for their outstanding contributions to enhance Mason County and its business community goes to Off the Walls Gallery, Shelton Domino's Pizza, and The Shopper, the 2017 BUSINESS OF THE YEAR.  Tracy & Jeff Neely, The Shopper

The Shopper is a one-stop shop for printing, advertising, and promotional materials, as well as office and spa supplies. Owners Jeff & Tracy Neely have built a great business along with daughter Kelsie Smith and their ten-person staff. For more than 25 years these business owners have been growing their footprint and their contributions to our community. “Jeff, Tracy, and their team are amazing! The service they provide and the quality or their work outshines any competitors. The volunteering and donations they share shows their commitment and care for our community.” This year alone, their contributions supported United Way, Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund, Mason General Hospital Foundation, Relay For Life, SHS Robotics Team, Forest Festival, Phoenix Base Project, OysterFest, local schools, and many, many more.

The Chamber’s Board of Trustees elected to contribute funds to support the YMCA and Rural Development Institute, acknowledging that these projects are integral to moving the community forward. The Chamber matched those dollars, doubling the impact. YMCA will undoubtedly offer much-needed programs while Rural Development Institute offers a unique training to foster community leadership.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

The Chamber recognizes that a trained workforce is critical to the success of businesses and to the community at large. This year, the Chamber presented the Lemonade Day entrepreneurship program at Hood Canal School, convened volunteers for Peninsula Credit Union’s Financial Reality Fair, participated in Shelton High School’s mock interviews, moderated a Job Seekers Group on Facebook, and hosted a first-ever countywide hiring fair at Little Creek Casino Resort. The Chamber also hosted numerous online and in-person workshops and provided continuing education opportunities to members.

VISIONING PLAN TAKES FORM

Taking cue from the brightly painted crosswalks and reduced traffic lanes of last year’s road diet, this year saw successful private-public partnerships to create a vibrant downtown. Smoking Mo’s epitomizes this effort, with a first-of-its kind sidewalk café complete with beverage service at Smoking Mo’s. The Visioning Committee continues to convene at the request of City staff and consult on items such as the downtown connector project.

INITIATIVE 1433 RULEMAKING

This year sees the implementation of initiative 1433, increasing minimum wage and mandating paid sick time. Executive Director Heidi McCutcheon dedicated countless hours participating in the state rulemaking for these, acting as the voice of business and minimizing the negative, unforeseen consequences to employers and employees alike. As we approach spring it seems natural to look ahead; this is a time for growth and renewal. A new term has begun for the Chamber’s Board of Trustees, the leaders setting the vision and direction for the organization. The Board has set the following goals for this year:

REEVALUATE PROGRAMS & SERVICES

The Chamber will reevaluate its entire program of work: programs, services, and events. Building on the feedback from the recent membership survey, an ad-

hoc committee will recommend changes to make certain the Chamber meets the evolving needs of its membership. Relying on input from our members of varying sizes and industries, the staff and board will conduct an honest assessment to ensure everything we do aligns with the Chamber’s mission and is a prudent use of resources.

Contact Miles for all your sand, gravel & concrete needs.

INCREASE MEMBERSHIP

By adding businesses and friends to the Chamber’s ranks, the Chamber increases its presence in the community and better represents its economic diversity. This strengthens the Chamber’s voice in advocacy. This expands the Chamber’s network, further connecting our businesses with our community. Membership is an investment in one’s own business as well as in the quality of life across Mason County.

FULLY STAFF THE CHAMBER OFFICE

In order to provide the quality of service that our members and visitors have come to expect, the Chamber must hire and retain skilled, enthusiastic staff. The membership director, administrative assistant, and volunteer coordinator report to the executive director. Together, the staff works to implement the direction set out by the board of trustees. If you have questions about any of these goals or if you would like to get involved, please contact Executive Director Heidi McCutcheon at (360) 426-2021 or email heidi@sheltonchamber.org.

ART FOR A CAUSE Empty Bowls 2018

The Shelton Arts Commission donated $1,902.25 to The Saint’s Pantry Food Bank from donations at the 13th Annual Empty Bowls Project. Local restaurants including The Strip Steak House, Taylor Shellfish, Sisters Restaurant, Kern’s Kitchen, Smoking Mo’s, and Olympic Bakery and Deli generously donated soup and bread for the event. The project is a creative effort to fight hunger where participants create ceramic bowls, building one night and glazing a week later. When the bowls were finished, participants gathered on March 21st to choose a bowl to keep in exchange for a $10 donation. Participants were then treated to a delicious bowl of soup and bread served by one of the six participating restaurants. All proceeds went to the Saint’s Pantry Food Bank.

McCutcheon Recognized at Local, State, Regional Levels Heidi McCutcheon, the chamber’s executive director, was honored in the fall as a member of Business Examiner’s “40 Under Forty.” The recipients represent the diversity and excellence of the South Sound and distinguish those who have made great accomplishments and significant contributions to their businesses, industries and communities. McCutcheon was touted for building partnerships and for her leadership role in the Shelton Visioning program. With incredible experience and reputation as a chamber of commerce professional, it comes as no surprise that McCutcheon has been elected to fill a three-year term on the Board of the Washington Chamber of Commerce Executives (WCCE). WCCE is an association of more than 200 chambers across the state of Washington. The association was founded in 1955 to support chamber executives and staff. Today, they develop high achieving professionals by focusing on professional skills development. “I’m honored to serve on the WCCE Board and represent Mason County at the state level,” said McCutcheon. “I’m looking

forward to working with other board members to provide directors across the state with the education and information they need to continue leading their communities.” McCutcheon also serves on the board of Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE). With approximately 860 members in 20 Western states and Canada, WACE is the largest regional chamber of commerce executives association in the United States. The association is designed to promote and enhance the professional development of chamber of commerce executives.

Mason Lake Recreation Area introduces annual pass

Mason Lake Recreation Area (MLRA) is a beautiful retreat with majestic trees towering over its campground and sunlight reflecting off the water, creating a picturesque location for outdoor fun. This gem was once designated for only Green Diamond's employees, retirees and guests. Happily, the privilege was extended to Chamber members in 2016. One of the largest lakes in the county, Mason Lake is open year-round for fishing. Kokanee is the best catch during the summer and bass, perch, and brown bullhead catfish are also found. Boating, water skiing, canoeing, and jet skiing are popular on the mountain lake, or you can just laze on the beach and splash in the freshwater waves. As you might imagine, operating and maintaining the large park is an immense undertaking. As such, MLRA has introduced a season pass and is making a few changes in order to increase revenue to help keep the park open and to maintain the current facilities, staffing levels, and to fund improvements.

To ensure the longevity of the park, a $50 annual fee is now being assessed. Chamber members are eligible to purchase the annual pass; this annual fee is separate from your dues. If you already have an access card, hold on to it. The card will be reactivated once you've paid for your annual pass online. The card number (last four digits of the lower right hand number) will also act as your member number for reservations. The seasonal membership benefit allows for unlimited day use by members and their immediate family and guests. One vehicle access pass will be included, though additional day vehicle passes are available for purchase online or at the MLRA office. Your membership also allows for the online rental of campground sites, group camps, and the two kitchen facilities; rental rates have been standardized this year. Also, there are new fees for day use of the boat launch. Reservations for camping can be made at masonlakecamp.com, you’ll need to call the park to reserve kitchen shelters or group camps. Questions can be answered by park staff directly at (360) 426-0737.

New Dues Schedule Announced for Members

Since its inception in 1922, members of the Chamber have paid dues to receive a variety of benefits. Today, the most popular benefits include directory listings and referrals, exclusive advertising and promotional campaigns, access to trainings, workshops, and special events, as well as eligibility to access Mason Lake Recreation Area just to name a few. Beyond that, Chamber membership also signifies a business’s commitment as one that supports the local community, cares about customers, and it builds on its reputation for being an industry leader. Membership dues account for nearly 60% of the Chamber’s annual budget. Membership dues support numerous programs (everything from partnerships with local schools to candidate forums) and allow the Chamber to engage in the community in a meaningful way. The Chamber advocates on behalf of businesses and the community at city, county, and state levels; the organization represents more than 6,000 employees and encourage decisions and rules that will create a healthier economy.

In 2014, the Chamber moved to a tiered membership structure. Rather than the old "fair-share" model, which was based solely on employee count, businesses now select a membership tier based on the benefits they wish to receive. This better serves the membership members by offering packages of benefits as well as à la carte options to suit individual needs and goals. The Chamber Board and staff are committed to providing value for Chamber membership. For more information about the benefits provided as each level of members or questions about the new dues schedule, please contact Membership Director Deidre Peterson at (360) 4262021 or email deidre@sheltonchamber.org.

Elections present a great deal of responsibility to us, the voters, especially now as the new council government is

being determined. In a race where less than ten votes have shown to be the deciding factor, every vote truly does matter. To help you decide who you believe to be the best representative of our community, the Chamber and MasonWebTV.com are hosting a Candidate Debate on Monday, April 2, 6:00 AM – 7:30 PM at Olympic Middle School. The candidates will be asked prepared questions, formulate questions to ask of his or her opponent, and respond to one another's answers. The Chamber is accepting questions from the audience at the event and also welcomes questions emailed to exec@sheltonchamber. org. Questions must be prepared for both candidates of a particular seat rather than an individual.

Current applicants are encouraged to use this new checklist to confirm timely processing. Any incomplete, or omission on the submittal checklist will not allow applications to be accepted by the department. Permit applications and development requirements can be found on the county's website at: www.co.mason. wa.us. Updated applications state "NEW" next to their title. Concert explores Community Connectivity

There’s nothing as homey as beloved hymns and spirituals – they’re musical comfort food. On May 13, explore ideas of home and community with these these beloved old friends that have had a little 21st century makeover!

Led by Matthew Blegen, members of the Great Bend Chorale and Youth Chorale plan to explore new music this spring. rs Weekly For 2018, they've paired fresh settings and brand new works by composers Eric William Barnum and Thomas Lavoy with updated settings of beloved songs, hymns and spirituals. They've even included a little U2 and James Taylor. Blegen's presentation revolved around the idea of social capital. Mason County is strong in bonded social capital; with a great many connections with like-minded people that reinforce our beliefs. Blegen illustrated that bridging social capital, or connections with people of different beliefs, is more difficult to come by in a rural setting.

This has its disadvantages, as that is the kind of social capital that serves as a predictor for things like economic success. By allowing people to sing together, without preconception as to their belief structure, Great Bend will work to bridge social capital of Mason County residents. The chorale, youth chorale, and beer choir programs are focused on enjoying music with one's neighbors. In turn, those neighbors get to know each other as people, and not merely as belief systems. As a result, we make bridges between us that were not possible in the beginning. Concert is at 3:00 PM, May 13 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Shelton. Tickets are available at greatbendmusic.org.

Bright Winter Nights Give Way To Stunning Spring Flowers

While gearing up for the return of spring and lovely flower baskets that adorn the city streets, we are grateful to our partners who helped the Chamber light up the snowy skies this past winter. Our thanks go to the Shelton Kiwanis Club & Foundation, Hood Canal Communications, City of Shelton, and Eric Thompson – Edward Jones who were instrumental in the display of dazzling Christmas lights and decorations throughout Shelton. These partners help organize and hang these displays each year, donating their equipment and time to the Chamber’s beautification effort. The business community and individual sponsors have taken responsibility for the costs associated with the installation and upkeep of the Christmas decorations, flower baskets, and streetlight banners.

Spot Shrimp opens May 5

Our appreciation goes to each business, service organization, and individual who provides financial support for this program. There is a tremendous cost associated with beautifying our community and it is funded in its entirety by donations; no tax dollars are allocated towards these projects. All donations are restricted to support beautification programs. Gifts of any amount are appreciated! You may drop off monetary contributions at the Chamber office located at 215 W Railroad Ave or mail them to SMCCC, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584.

Hood Canal is scheduled to reopen May 5. Tentative open dates are May 5, 9, 12 and 23 (please note that these dates are not final). Over 80 shrimp species live in Washington waters. However, only seven species are regularly captured for consumption by harvesters. Shrimp are found primarily on or near the bottom but make migrations through the water column in search of food. They have been found at depths greater than 1,000 feet, but are most frequently captured at depths of 30 to 300 feet. Adult shrimp are omnivorous, feeding on marine worms, small crustaceans, large planktonic organisms, sponges, and dead animal and plant material. For information on sport shrimp seasons, or for a description of marine areas, visit wdfw.wa.gov.P

A Quick Money Stop between Shelton and Olympia

There’s a new presence just outside of town and it’s benefiting all of us. In November 2016, Our Community Credit Union announced it planned to open a new branch. Just one year later, they opened the doors at Steamboat Island. Located conveniently off Highway 101, the branch serves the local community as well as daily commuters between Shelton and Olympia. “We’ve been so well received,” says branch manager Kristi Beeson, “the community has embraced us, as well as our existing members. They love that we are here!” The branch ambiance lends to the warm feeling – from it’s reclaimed wood to its modern fixtures, it has a decidedly northwest appeal. “We have members who come in, hang out, and are comfortable just chatting with us. Having such a small branch has given us the opportunity to really know our members.” Upon entering the branch, the first thing you’ll notice is the rock ‘wall’ surrounding the teller line. OCCU employees from all different branches were encouraged to contribute their own rock. The rocks were then cleaned and placed within a framework clearly visible as the public enters the building. “It’s really made us feel connected to the rest of our OCCU family,” Kristi says.

24

The branch currently has four staff. In addition to the branch manager, there’s a loan officer and two universal agents, called

such as they have responsibilities beyond a typical teller. While some finishing touches are still to be completed, some new features are state of the art. A virtual teller, referred to as an in-lobby-teller or ILT, is in the entryway lobby. Members can access it by inserting their OCCU debit card into a card reader allowing entry, making it safely accessible 24 hours a day. The Steamboat branch is a great amenity for those caught between two counties. Stop by and see it for yourself! Branch hours are Monday to Thursday from 9:00 AM – 5:35 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The drive through is slated to open mid-April. When it does, drivers can go through beginning at 7:00 AM every weekday.

Music Festival draws crowds to Shelton Each May hordes of musicians and their families gather in Shelton for an annual weekend festival that draws nationally renowned talent. Hosted by the Kristmas Town Kiwanis, Bluegrass from the Forest will be held on May 18 – 20. The Festival idea was hatched in the Shelton Lumbermen’s parking lot by Duane Wilson and Greg Linder as a fundraiser to build toilet facilities at the playing fields. Since then, the event has sponsored multiple local projects including stage improvements at Shelton High School.

Bluegrass families now turn out in hoards for the workshops and bands to this volunteer driven festival. Saturday morning includes a Band Scramble. Names are drawn to form a random band that hopefully includes a bass, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and singer. They have 40 minutes to come up with a tune to perform on stage. It’s a great way to make some new friends, perform on stage, and possibly could lead to the formation of the next big bluegrass band.

Bringing solid waste & recycling solutions to Mason County! • Residential • Commercial • Drop Boxes

“Though the bands are paid, and there are many expenses, it’s a labor of love for us who put it together - the payment is seeing the enjoyment on people’s faces,“ remarks Linder when asked what motivates the group.

While you’re participating in the scramble, make sure your music-loving kids participate in the Chick Rose Youth School of Bluegrass. Founded by the late Chick Rose, the program teaches kids of all levels. Children are divided into small groups based on musical ability and coached by advanced musicians. This program culminates with a performance on Sunday morning. 26

The Mandolin Tasting event provides mandolin players the opportunity to gather around and play some very nice mandolins. This is less of a workshop on playing techniques and more about understanding the features that make a good instrument. If mandolins aren't your thing the folks at the Festival have though of you too. Marv Sobolesky hosts the Slow Jam and shares his knowledge with players of all skill levels. Popular fiddle tunes will be played slowly at first, and then repeated at a faster tempo as folks catch on to the jam. This is a great (and fun!) way to improve your music playing abilities in a non-judgmental setting. As is tradition, hotdogs will be served at midnight on Saturday to help fuel the many musical jam sessions bound to happen. As if the music isn’t enough, the festival includes camping for an experience you won’t soon forget. You can take in a single performance ($15) or buy tickets to jam out the entire weekend. A weekend pass to the event is $45/person or $90/family. Bring the kids along too; they get free or discounted pricing. Camping is availanle on site ($20/weekend). A list of area lodging can alo be found at explorehoodcanal. com. For more information or to make your reservations for the event be sure to visit bluegrassfromtheforest.com.

Hama Hama Oyster Rama | April 21 Oysters. Chances are you either love them dearly or loathe the thought of them. Regardless of which camp you are in, these small shellfish dotting Hood Canal’s shoreline are a major staple. In short, they are a culinary and cultural icon of Mason County and the surrounding areas. It is for this reason that the fifth generation, family-run shellfish farm Hama Hama Oyster Co. celebrates the tide flats and its bivalve inhabitants at the annual Hama Hama Oyster Rama! Each year Hama Hama welcomes the public to their beach to learn about oysters, oyster farming, and life in the Hood Canal, both aquatic and other. The Rama features u-pick oysters and clams, an oyster-sporting competition dubbed the Shuckathalon, a beer and wine garden, kids’ activities, live music, and various delicious food options.

In addition to the festivities and fun, Oyster Rama also features tours with intertidal ecologists and oyster growers to educate the public about our shelled friends. Oyster Rama also benefits local Hood Canal charities. As one of Mason County’s most popular events, the Oyster Rama sells out quickly! Food, drink, oysters and clams are available for purchase using $5 tokens purchased at the event.
