Last week a colleague said, “I didn’t know the Chamber did that. I thought you just did events.”

This statement struck me. As much as I enjoy the networking socials, luncheons, and festivals that we organize and support it’s only one small piece of what we do at the Chamber. That got me thinking: are we telling our story? Do people know what we do and who we are?

The Chamber is a business organization that people pay membership dues to be a part of. We aren’t part of the city or the county. While we are a non-profit, we aren’t a charity. As the oldest and largest business association in Mason County, we work to connect our businesses with our community through advocacy, education, and promotion. Sometimes that’s through networking socials and parties, other times it’s sitting down with city hall and talking through different scenarios.

One of our strengths is convening leaders. By the time this issue is published, the Chamber will have hosted a listening session with local tradesmen and the City of Shelton. With the current city manager’s background in planning, we took the initiative to offer a format for those who regularly navigate the permitting process to provide honest, constructive feedback. This is especially important now, as the city begins looking at updating codes and fee schedules.

In further advocacy efforts, we follow rulemaking and frequently provide feedback on proposed labor and state issues. In a recent issue, you likely saw the article discussing the Executive, Administrative, and Professional rulemaking underway at Department of Labor & Industries which is considering increasing the minimum salary for exempt employees. One method being considered is a multiplier of the average weekly wage, which could be as much as $74,880 annually.

During the legislative session, we notified our members and shared information with our state association about bills like HB1491/SB5717, commonly referred to as ‘restrictive scheduling’ that would have further regulated scheduling and adversely affected owners and employees, alike. Too often, there are proposals that would affect Mason County and other rural workforces far more than our neighbors in the greater King County area. While we often take positions on issues and policy that will affect our businesses, we do not endorse individual candidates. We work diligently with all of our elected officials to help them understand the plight of local businesses and employees. Over the next several months, the Chamber is hosting small roundtables and business visits for Congressmen, State Representatives, County Commissioners, and City Council Members. I hope that our candid conversations and these real-life experiences will inform their decision making, encourage effective policies, and open dialogue about common concerns.

Mason County is poised for great things. I, for one, am proud to help play a small part in that success and ensure that the Chamber continues to be a champion of our community. While I realize that the official start of summer is still a few weeks away, Memorial Day weekend always feels like the start of my summer. It is so much easier to have a sunny disposition when the rain clouds part more often, and the sun stays out later in the evening.

It’s hard not to feel blessed if one is lucky enough to live in Western Washington in the summer. Our warm, temperate days invite us to stay outside more and more, all while still surrounded by the beautiful green landscape.

It reminds us to be thankful for the rain when it happens also. This weather also gets us out and about more; more time doing all fun things that are featured in this issue.

There are so many positive things happening: school construction and road repair spring to mind. Some of these bring short-term hardships and sometimes it is simply easier to focus on the inconvenience and wallow in our own frustration. Instead of letting the gray cloud follow us, let’s find the silver lining! Rather than using negative energy to complain about the problem, call a friend and make a stop at those businesses affected by the road closures… truly support them and help brighten the

Chamber Beautification Program Blooms Flower baskets go up around Shelton The Chamber saw that flower baskets were hung with care just in time for Forest Festival weekend, thanks to the help and hard work of Hood Canal Communications and City of Shelton.

The Chamber and its partners collaborate to make our community more beautiful in the summer with a flowery, cheerful welcome and by displaying the Christmas street light ornaments in the winter.

There is a tremendous cost associated with these projects which are funded entirely by community donations. No tax dollars are allocated towards the cost or maintenance and all donations go directly to the beautification program.

You can help! Gifts made to the beautification program provide for the upkeep of the flower baskets, streetlight banners, and Christmas decorations. Summer flower baskets may be sponsored for $225 each; this offsets the cost of purchasing and maintaining one flower basket for the season. You may choose to sponsor a basket in the name of a business, in honor of an individual, or in memoriam of a loved one.

You can even choose which basket you’d like to sponsor.

Looking ahead, the Chamber is also planning to begin replacing the Christmas decorations. The festive, lighted décor is now 65 years old and, while lovingly maintained, has surpassed the life expectancy by

decades. There will be a significant expense to replace all of the decorations and will likely be phased in, area-by-area, over the next few years. The Chamber is relying on the community’s sense of pride and its Christmas spirit to help raise funds for the nearly $60,000 expected to fully light up Christmas Town, USA during the winter months.

Ridge Motorsports Park Performance Center Coming Soon New complex, opening this summer, offers event space Revving engines, cheering crowds, and unparalleled excitement are part of the new Ridge Motorsports Park Performance Center opening this summer, but they’re not the only things to expect. While the 9,585 sq. ft. complex will serve as motorsports and event venue, it also serves as a community resource, training, and career center; as well as a corporate destination for meetings, seminars, trade-shows, and retreats to be enjoyed by everyone in the nation.

“Ridge Motorsports Park owners Joe Manke and Rusty Gill have poured their passion into making this a phenomenal place not only for racers, but for the local community as well,” said Ridge general manager Tracie Schmitt. “By supporting additional jobs for our region and serving as a training platform for young adults, this complex creates beneficial opportunities not only from a job and career standpoint, but from an economic standpoint… that lets everyone see what an amazing community we have.”

Opening in 2012, the Ridge Motorsports Park experienced wild popularity and community support that rapidly brought on momentous growth. The park grew from 176 events in 2016 to more than 400 events in 2018, presenting the need for the new Performance Center. The building’s versatile design provides a professional environment in a private space, but with a Pacific Northwest twist. It has an open layout and two roll up doors to further enjoy the spectacular view; it also has areas that can be closed off as needed for private events.

The first floor features the training center, performance shop, Grand Prix track registration and café. The second floor is home to the main greeting area, the banquet hall, private restrooms and a pair of event suites. Food service in the suites is handled by Ridge Catering, and each suit also has access to the Ridge Café. Like the existing facility, the new Performance Center has been built entirely with private funding.

Maple Glen Cares for Mason County Relationships at heart of independent living Nearly two decades ago, Maple Glen Senior Living began caring for the Mason County Community. “It doesn’t seem like that long ago,” says Monica Decicio, the organization’s executive director, who has been there almost since the beginning. “I always knew I’d be in caregiving, I just didn’t realize I’d get to do it all here.”

In her position now for 3 years, she began 18 years ago as a caregiver. Since then, she’s also served as a medical technician and Resident Service Director before serving at the helm. Maple Glen has a track record of recognizing good employees and promoting from within. Her predecessor, Kelley Crabtree, began working in the kitchen and now serves as the Regional Director for Maple Glen’s parent company, Artegan. “We like to recognize talent and reward it with opportunity and more responsibility,” says Monica. She goes on to share that the expectation is that there is no job too small for anyone at the organization, be it assisting in bathing or helping out in the kitchen. “It’s all based on relationships,” she says. “I can’t ask my staff to do something I wouldn’t do.”

And it really is about the relationships.

When asked what she’s most proud of, Monica immediately gushes about her residents. “It’s a simple thing, but helping someone FaceTime family members; it’s just so important. It’s emotional, but it’s such a good feeling to help families connect.” She then talks about how she’s proud when families tell her they are comfortable going on vacations or leaving town, because they know their loved ones are in good hands.

She’s quick to point out that Maple Glen is not a nursing home, it’s assisted living. “There are no open doors along long hallways; these are people’s apartments,” she says. Staff assists in housekeeping, showering, administering medication, and even transporting the residents to medical appointments; but it’s more of an adult community than anything else. She flips through the monthly calendar showing in-house activities like crafting and even margarita mixers, but there are also day trips and outside excursions.

They can offer hospice and end of life care in-house where it is familiar and they know the staff. VA Assistance programs are also in place at Maple Glen for veterans and their spouses. Some residents qualify for substantial monthly deposits into their personal spending accounts. Maple Glen is able to help them with the paperwork and get them into these programs.

If you have a loved one who may need some living assistance but is hesitant to consider it, pop by and get a tour. “You should never be required to make an appointment to visit,” Monica says. “We want people to see how it really is on a day to day basis.” If you are more comfortable making an ap-

The 70th anniversary of Pancakes in the Park is on July 28 from 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM. This tradition was begun by the Shelton Kiwanis Club in 1949 and has grown to nearly 1,000 guests at this familyfriendly annual event. On the last Sunday of July, the community turns out in droves at Kneeland Park to attend the all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, scrambled eggs, and breakfast meats along with coffee service. There is even a book van there offering free children’s books and live entertainment.

Proceeds from Pancakes in the Park benefit local youth leadership programs such as Key Club and Cub Scouts, recreational sports and extracurricular activities, student recognition programs in local schools, scholarships for graduating SHS seniors, support of City parks, the Catalyst Park Community & Food Bank Garden, and much more.

General admission tickets are $9 each and are good for one adult or two children under ten. A $25 family pass covers two adults and two kids aged 10 and under. Big Project at the Little Caboose The light pole outside the red caboose was recently moved westbound in order to allow for new railings to be installed at the entry of the visitor information center.

This plan was several years in the making. Mason County PUD#3 provided engineering and pole relocation while City of Shelton took on demolition, wiring, and concrete work. The smooth, widened surface provided the space need for ADA

A destination in and of itself, Caboose #700 serves as the Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Information Center. It was built in the 1920s in Shelton by the Peninsula Railway Company. It is a side-door caboose, which is unique in that it was used to

haul less-than-carload freight bound for the various camps. The caboose was also used to carry passengers to and from logging camps where the railroads were often the only means of transportation available.

Simpson’s Camp #5 was the last of the Simpson camps to be accessible by automobile as it did not have a road connecting it with the outside world until 1935. Number 700 remained in Snoqualmie until May 26, 1983, when it was loaded by a

stacker on two low-boys, brought to Shelton, and set in place behind “Tollie” by a large crane. Caboose #700 worked behind Shay for many years, traveling over this location on Railroad Avenue.

It is probably one of the last surviving examples of this historic style of caboose. To learn more about Caboose #700 and the areas logging heritage, visit the Mason County Historical Museum.

Chamber Spreads Joy Through Chalk the Walks It’s pretty simple. On Tuesday, August 20, people across Mason County will head outside to spend some time writing uplifting messages and creating chalk artwork on sidewalks, driveways, and even parking lots. It is amazing how these small designs make our community more cheerful for everyone to enjoy.

For the sixth year running, the Chamber joined Chalk the Walks, a project of The Joy Team, to host a community-wide sidewalk chalking event. All you need is a box of chalk to get the fun started. Just remember to follow some basic rules of etiquette:

• Be respectful: consider your neighbors and others who will see your chalked walks.

• Remember the mission: the goal here is to spread joy, optimism and inspiration; if what you’re writing doesn’t accomplish that in a pure and simple way, please reconsider.

• Keep it clean: it’s very difficult to spread joy if your content is offensive; if an 8-year-old shouldn’t read it, don’t write it.

• Have fun: play is important to our mental and emotional health; connect with your inner child, be playful, have fun.

Artists can share their handiwork using #chalkthewalksmasoncounty posting photos of positive chalk messages. By the end of the day, there will be an inspiring collection of images from all over Mason County (and even the world!) spreading joy, optimism, and encouragement through the playful power of sidewalk chalk.

In the case of housing during a time of scarcity, prices can hit stratospheric levels. That focus on housing supply is a key argument made in a national report on housing and homelessness released mid-2018 by a coalition of Democrats in the U.S. House.

“We simply cannot build enough units in this country,” U.S. Rep. Denny Heck, D-Olympia. Heck is a co-author and says he got the ball rolling on this timely topic. But hard work lies ahead: finding recommendations by year’s end that might help ease the home affordability crisis and persuade Congress to act. The “Missing Millions of Homes” suggests 5 million housing units are needed across the country.

This report prompted action by Peninsula Credit Union. In January of this year, PCU and the Chamber, along with other organizations and stakeholders, created an opportunity for business, government, and housing organizations to discuss workforce housing in Mason County for a one-day Workforce Housing Summit. More than 100 people attended and a 72-page report resulted from the day’s speakers, breakout sessions, and attendees. A summary of recommendations prioritizes eight outcomes:

From Little League to Fighting for Clients When Jeff McHargue’s photo was snapped in 1973, proudly wearing Arnold Smith’s name on his Little League uniform, there was no way to know that it was foreshadowing his future.

The insurance agency’s co-owner says that community values and involvement are among the things he’s most proud of his agency being known for, and also part of the reason why he now owns the company along with his business partner Chris Ladner.

Both have been in the industry for more than 30 years and at Arnold Smith since 1995 and 1994, respectively. The pair became partial owners in 2002, taking full ownership of the company in 2006. Since that time, they’ve opened an office in Belfair and increased their employee count. “All of our staff are licensed agents,” McHargue says. “That way anyone can help our clients; be it the person who answers the phone or whomever is at the front desk when someone comes in.”

The company is a full-scale insurance agency. McHargue focuses on Life & Health Insurance, while Ladner is an expert in Commercial & Casualty Insurance. The office as a whole also offers auto, commercial liability, boat, motorcycle, employee benefits, disability, and more.

“Industry standard is that Life & Health Insurance is a fairly insignificant percentage of an office, regularly 10-15%. Here we’ve grown it to average around 41-42%,” McHargue says.

He goes on to share that part of what drew him to the industry was because it is largely performance-based pay.

“The harder I work, the better the profits, but if I want some time off, I’m in the place where I can do that,” he says.

When asked what he is most proud of, he doesn’t hesitate with his answer.

“Getting denied claims paid,” he states. When asked to share what experience with claims stands out most,

he shares a story about a client who was denied for stem cell transplant. “I fought with them every day for three months before they finally approved it. But they did approve it,” he says. “It gave him years more with his family. He was just looking at months without that surgery.”

Hardware Distillery Revives Norwegian Tradition Join The Hardware Distillery and Hood Canal Events as they race a barrel of aquavit across the Hood Canal at the 3rd annual FjordinCrossin in Hoodsport. Traditional Norwegian style Linie Aquavit has been produced for over 200 years, its distinct flavor caused by crossing the equator twice.

In 1805, Linie Aquavit crossed the Equator from Norway bound for the East Indies to be sold, but returned to Norway in 1807 as it was unsold.

It turned out that the sea voyage had a positive effect on the taste of the Aquavit. Today, the old sailing ships have vanished but the liquor still crosses the Equator on the deck of a ship and returns via Australia. It has become a celebrated Aquavit tradition; the Hardware Distillery makes its version of aquavit by crossing the canal.

On June 29, The Hardware Distillery will launch a barrel of aged Dill Aquavit, cross the Hood Canal from

Hood Canal Events has organized this year’s Paddle the Canal, a professionally timed 3-mile course that is open to any non-motorized vessel. When the horn sounds, participants will race to their boats and paddle the span of the Hood Canal and return in an effort to beat the barrel of aquavit back to the marina.

The Salmon Center sponsored Aquavit Grotto will serve Aquavit cocktails, cook oysters, and serve Scandinavian specialties on the beach beneath the Hoodsport Dock.

On Monday nights throughout the summer, the Chamber offers an opportunity to take advantage of both at Alderbrook Golf Course while hitting the links and connecting with fellow business leaders and friends.

The visitor information center provides a welcome to travelers and locals, alike. This year, the Chamber secured funding from the County’s lodging tax funds to enhance visitor services, City of Shelton, and the National Park Service.

The Hoodsport Visitor Information Center is located at the base of Lake Cushman Road in the old Ranger Station office. May through September, their hours of operation are: Monday – Thursday from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Sunday.
