Heidi McCutcheon | Executive Director In early August, I went back to school. It was my third and final year of Academy, a training program designed specifically for Chamber staff to learn best practices, share innovative ideas, and grow a network of other Chamber employees across the United States. As with each year I’ve attended, I came home eager to get to work with all of the new ideas and processes that are learned. Reflecting over the three years’ worth of education, I was pleased to see many things learned at Academy have been put to good use. The Chamber now has a strong emphasis on communicating what we are doing. This very issue of the BIGHT magazine you’re reading is to further connect our businesses with our community. We also have a weekly electronic newsletter that goes out each Monday that tells of the week’s events, what our Chamber members are doing and news briefs for Mason County citizens and business owners. You can sign up to receive it weekly as well at http:// tinyurl.com/chamberenews. Along with better communication comes a better understanding of what the Chamber has to offer. When I first attended Academy, it was hard for me to sum up our member benefits are and the value they provide our members. Now I can easily say that our goal is connecting our businesses and our community. We do so through education (professional development and collaborating with schools), promotion (networking and marketing) and advocacy (promoting business interests to, and partnering with, government when possible).

I’m happy to announce that, beginning in January, we will be approaching our dues investment structure differently. When we began looking at our member’s benefits the current pricing schedule just didn’t make sense. You can read more about this on page 8. There are many more things that we’ve implemented because of the training I received and the peers I’ve meet through Academy, even the recent Tour of Empty Buildings was originally an idea from a Chamber exec in Ohio. Although I have completed my Academy training, there will be further development down the road. I strongly believe in continuing education – after all, we don’t know what we don’t know until we learn about it. I was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship this year, which allowed me to bring my office manager Deidre Eaton along for her first year. If there’s one thing I can afford for the Chamber, it’s to invest in staff development. So the tradition begins!

Afraid of the dentist? Hate shots? Can’t stand the smell or noise?

President of the board shares Chamber’s goals

Does the thought of having your teeth cleaned make your entire body tense with fear? Would you rather endure the agony of a toothache than step foot in a dentist’s office? You’re not alone.

Melanie Bakala | State Farm Insurance Mason County is an amazing place to live. We get to live every day in a beautiful area surrounded by water and breathtaking views. Your Chamber’s efforts benefit both our members and the entire community by encouraging a vibrant business community, promoting tourism, and facilitating economic development. We create a connected business community.

Don’t believe ads that claim “we’ll be nice to you” or “pain-free dentistry” – oral sedation dentistry is the answer to all your fears. Sedation can be used for everything from invasive procedures to a simple tooth cleaning. You can finally relax in the dentist chair. Call 426-9711 for a free consultation.

For 2013, your Chamber Board of Trustees set three primary goals. As we head into our final four months, we’d like to share our progress.

Dr. William Busacca, DDS. PS

GOAL #1 - Increase participation in networking events by 10%

Preferred provider for Washington Dental Service/Delta Dental plans

The attendance at our networking events has been growing steadily over the past several years, and this year we have seen an increase in attendance above 100%. We had record attendance at the Business Expo/Bite of Shelton, as well and impressive numbers at our Monthly Meeting and Business After Hours events.

GOAL #2 - Grow Your Chamber to 368 members strong

We’re doing this in two ways: • By more effectively communicating the benefits of chamber membership to our existing members. This has resulted in a larger number of engaged member and an increase in the number of renewing members. Our Executive Director has been visiting at least two existing members a week in order to get feedback on what they want from their Chamber. •

that trend this year and that our budget has finished in the black this fiscal year. I am very proud of the work that the Board of Trustees, and Heidi and her team are doing to grow the Shelton Mason Chamber of Commerce. A strong Chamber is necessary for a vibrant business community.

GOAL #3 - Operate in the Black

We hear you! Chamber changes membership structure to increase value Heidi McCutcheon | Chamber Executive Director

What’s in your Chamber membership? Do the benefits and services truly offer the best value when based solely on how many employees you have? After carefully considering these questions, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees, staff and the Member Services committee have made the decision to change the way our members invest.

State of the Forest Industry hosted by Green Diamond Resource Co. on July 18 at Green Diamond Mason Lake Recreation Area in Grapeview. After a special pre-event forest walk showcasing the nearby old growth, Chamber Members enjoyed dinner by Smoking Mo’s and heard the latest on the forest industry - from forest to mill to market. Thank you to Patti Case and Paul Wing from Green Diamond and Betsy Staffer and Jim Barnett from Simpson!

In the past, businesses have joined and paid membership dues solely based on the number of employees in their organizations, not on the benefits that they need. This is changing in the new structure and instead our members will choose the benefits that they want and need, then invest accordingly. This new tiered system provides increased benefits with comparable dues, even at the basic entry level.

Why?

It’s always seemed a bit unfair that a business of six employees pays $80 more annually than a business with one less employee. So we began considering ways to guarantee equity and offer choice for our members. The tiered dues structure allows our members to select a membership package that is important to their individual business and allows for them to choose the

services and benefits they receive. An added bonus is that the tiered dues structure is directly aligned with the Chamber’s mission to encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism, and facilitate economic development and we are realigning our price structure and revenue stream to meet that. We have also listened to our member’s feedback and it is clear that different benefits are valued for a variety of reasons. For some, having a voice in advocacy is most important. For others, the ability to network and advertise is paramount. These requests aren’t typically based on the size of the business or the number of employees. The “one size fits all” dues structure isn’t working. The solution is to develop several levels of benefits that match the membership dues investment.

Increasing benefits across all levels

We began to consider changing our membership structure in 2010 as we benchmarked and learned from other chambers that moved to a different system. We studied the effects the change would have on our organization and on our membership. At the same time, member benefits have been scrutinized, evaluated, and measured. Under the new system some benefits remained or were changed, many were created, and others were removed altogether. For example: • Members still receive complimentary listing for their business under three categories at sheltonchamber.org/directory and once in the BIGHT magazine, with business descriptions planned to be added for members who choose upper membership levels. •

We still have free programs and events for our networking members and reduced pricing for others.

We transition away from the President’s Circle status as we currently know it. We realize there are better ways to promote and give value to members who choose to support the Chamber at higher levels.

We may offer a “Loyalty Member” recognition program for businesses with 5+ years of membership.

In Transition…

We recognize adopting the tiered benefits system is a significant change for our members. The transition will be phased and will allow plenty of time for adjustment. Our next steps as we move toward a tiered dues structure include hosting study groups consisting of members to discuss our current benefits and the corresponding value. We’ll then meet personally meet with a sample of members over the next 6 to 9 months to discuss the added benefits and opportunities and make suggestions as to which level a member should enroll. Those who are currently a President’s Circle Member for the 2013-14 period will continue to be listed as such until your organization moves to the tiered system. We hope to begin bringing new members on with this tiered membership structure beginning January 1, 2014. Our current members will begin rolling over to the new tiered dues structure as they renew their membership beginning our next fiscal year, which starts on July 1, 2014. As always, the Chamber staff and Board of Trustees are committed to regularly reviewing member benefits and we welcome your feedback.

Chamber sparks entrepreneurship with Tour of Empty Buildings

• More Games • NEW Event Space

Have you ever wondered about the vacant building just down the road? Or were you curious about its architecture or wanted to know more about its story? Downtown Shelton has a long commercial history and wide variety of interesting properties currently available for sale or rent. On August 22, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce partnered with Peninsula Credit Union and the Mason County Association of Realtors for a special event to answer those questions – and so much more. The Tour of Empty Buildings kicked-off with a luncheon featuring keynote speaker Congressman Denny Heck and was followed by guided tours of a dozen commercial spaces in the downtown core. “As a small business owner in the South Sound before being elected to Congress, I know that growing our local economy requires some innovative thinking,” said Rep. Heck. “I’m confident Shelton’s up to the challenge and I’m looking forward to seeing more companies call Mason County home in the years ahead.” The tour, led by Mason County Realtors and Chamber leadership, showcased a dozen commercial properties currently available for sale or rent. Representatives stood by at each location to answer the important questions about square footage, zoning, sales price, etc.

The Chamber’s executive director Heidi McCutcheon says, “By not hiding the fact that we have empty buildings, we are letting prospective businesses know that we have room and we are waiting to welcome them.” She says the Chamber was thrilled with the outpour of excitement from its members and community stakeholders who attended the event. “We are hopeful that this will spark the entrepreneurial spirit of someone who is considering opening a business and that perhaps this will get people talking about the possibilities.” Call or email the Chamber office to learn more about the properties featured on the tour, which ranged from the intersection of Eighth & Franklin to the intersection of Front & Cota.

It’s (finally) a wrap!

SKOKOMISH TOURISM

Julie Nichols | Government Affairs Chair

It took two 30-day special sessions, but the Washington Legislature finally adjourned on June 28, averting a government shut down by just hours. The Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee followed the developments as the session progressed, and visited 35th district legislators in their Olympia offices during session to discuss issues critical to businesses in Mason County.

Budget & Taxes

A standoff between the Democrat leadership in the House and the Majority Coalition Caucus leadership in the Senate finally ended when the Legislature passed a bipartisan state operating budget for the 2013-15 biennium, which includes more than a billion dollars in increased K-12 education funding and included no increase in higher education tuition. The dynamic in the Legislature changed dramatically when two Democratic senators, Rodney Tom (D-Medina) and Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch) joined with the Republicans in the Senate to form the Majority Coalition Caucus late last year. The move shifted effective control of the state senate out of the hands of Democrats, and interrupted a long period of single party rule in Olympia. Despite repeated proposals by Democratic leaders and Governor Jay Inslee to raise taxes on everything from gas to bottled water, in the end, the compromise budget required no new general taxes. Business groups, including the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the Association of Washington Business (AWB) also helped defeat proposals to make permanent the temporary 20 percent B & O tax surcharge on service industries from 2010. This tax expired as scheduled in June 2013. “While we needed to compromise with the House of Representatives to pass the final version of this budget, we never abandoned our principles. The result is a budget that really does live within its means while investing in our future through a substantial increase in education funding” said Senate President Pro Tempore, Tim Sheldon.

Representative Kathy Haigh agrees that the quality of education addressed in this budget, especially through full day kindergarten and monies to address early reading problems is encouraging. “It’s education for outcomes, not numbers,” said Haigh, D-Shelton.

Workers’ Compensation

Despite the fact that officials from the Department of Labor and Industries have made it clear that the workers’ comp fund is not solvent, the Legislature did not pass any measures to reform the state’s monopoly on workers’ compensation. One of the bills that would have improved the program – and helped avoid rate increases on employers – was ESSB 5127, a bill supported by Republicans and Democrats, which would have lowered the age (from 55 to 40) at which injured workers are allowed the option of entering into such a settlement agreement. L & I itself estimated that this would have resulted in hundreds of millions in savings, however, organized labor opposed the bill and House Democratic Leadership refused to allow a vote.

Local Issues

The Capital Budget included $3.5 million for Mason County projects, including $1.5 million for City of Shelton Sewer work. These projects were negotiated in the final days of the session, with Representative Drew MacEwen playing a key role as Assistant Ranking Member of the House Capital Budget Committee. “It was worth staying in Olympia until the sun came up in order to reach this capital budget agreement. The 35th District has finally received an overdue investment that was overlooked in previous years,” said MacEwen, R-Union.

BIGHT Mason County Chamber (formerly knownShelton as Lake Cushman State Park)

Where we live, learn, work and play matters to our health The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute have released the third annual County Health Rankings. Nearly every county in the country is ranked on health outcomes (how healthy we are) and on health factors (how healthy we can be). In 2013, Mason County ranked 33rd of 39 counties in terms of health outcomes. This was an improvement from 37th place in 2010. Using these findings, a diverse group of health and educational partners came together in Mason County to assess the needs of the community and devise a “road-map” for further improvement in the ranking. Led by Mason Matters, Mason County Public Health and Social Services as well as a committee comprised of health facilities, community members, and educators, the group set out to identify target areas of concern to implement improvement in Mason County. Specific factors are used nationwide to determine where communities are doing well and where improvement is needed. The emphasis on these population indicators determine what, if improved, can help make communities healthier places to live, learn, work and play.

The nationwide study has predominantly shown that much of what affects our health occurs outside of the doctor’s office! The County Health Rankings confirms the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income, and environment play in how healthy people are and how long they live. The group believes there are evidence-based policies and programs that a community can implement to improve health factors and, ultimately, improve its health ranking. The County Health Rankings identifies that the two indicators that contribute to a county’s ranking are mortality and morbidity rates.

The study found that Mason County ranks poorer than the state average in most measures associated with mortality and morbidity. Mason County ranked 28th of 39 counties in terms of mortality rate. This is largely due to high rates of premature death, as measured by years of potential life lost with death before 75 years of age. The group determined that Mason County’s rate is 25% higher than the state and 34% higher than the national benchmark.

The County Health Rankings project used seven key indicators to assess social and economic factors in a community, below are the local comparisons of figures as published by the Mason County Community Health Assessment (3/13)

In 2010, almost 1 in 4 Mason County children, under the age of 19, lived in poverty. The differences between local rates and state rates have widened over the past couple of years. The group determined that all but one Mason County school district reported higher rates of poverty compared to the state average.

full report available at co.mason.wa.us

The study conducted by the Mason County Community Health Improvement Planning Committee identified six strategic health priorities for Mason County: • Trained workforce able to access living wage jobs • Access and use of health care services • Access to affordable and healthy food • Built environment that promotes health • Safe, affordable, healthy housing • Family support programs

In general, Mason County’s high school graduation rates have been lower than state rates for both on-time and extended graduation with the exception of the 2009-10 graduating class, when Mason County rates exceeded those of the state. Extended graduation rates include students who complete their high school diploma after their expected year of graduation Mason County’s adult education levels continue to be lower than the state rates. Mason County has a higher percent of adults with little or no education beyond high school and a lower percent of adults who have completed a college degree. Thirty-one percent of Washington State residents have a Bachelor degree or higher, while only 18% of Mason County residents have

Based upon the report findings, Mason Matters is taking steps to improve accessibility to work training in Mason County. “Our goal,” said Kim Klint, executive director, “is to provide Mason County with stable and sufficient funding to ensure that all of our at-risk youth will have the support and services they need for school success and to expand the outcomes we have achieved over the past 10 years to other high-needs, low-performing rural school districts across the state.” See page 37 for further details on the launch of Mason Matter’s current program. Morbidity describes how healthy individuals feel. Mason County adults report more poor health days, due to either physical or mental health conditions, compared to other adults in the state. Many of the leading causes of death and chronic health conditions are caused or exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors like poor eating habits or lack of physical activity.

Senior services “changing for the better” in Mason County With its spectacular views and convenient access to health options and recreation, it is no wonder that many residents are choosing to retire in Mason County. Many families go back several generations and seniors who used to spend their summers as kids here, now spend their golden years here too. Mason County has an amazing selection of public golf courses as well as plenty of recreation for seniors including hiking, shellfish gathering, bird watching, boating, hunting, fishing. Dorothy Wood, 92, keeps “young” by being involved in community activities, like dancing with friend, Cathy Carolsfeld. NEW Open MRI Ad LIFE 2 col x 6.75

There are also plenty of clubs and organizations with which to become involved. Recently the Mason County Senior Activity Association underwent a dramatic transformation. Outgrowing their location on Railroad Avenue, the MCSAA has been on the look out for a new location for a number of years. The group invested a great deal of effort into attempting to negotiate ( an acquisition of the former PUD#3 facility on Cota in downtown Shelton but were unsuccessful in getting the property. The group was excited to be offered the opportunity to purchase the Pavilion at Sentry Park by Gillis Auto Center in Shelton. With the major move, the group has seized the opportunity to reinvent their identity as well as their facility. “Changing for the better,” is the new catchphrase for members of the MCSAA now that they’ve settled into their new home.

CMYK

Change has affected every aspect of the group––the largest senior association in Mason County––beginning with the name of their new location now called the 50 and Better Activities Center to underscore the fact that for many people, their best years start in their 50s, says Terri Shaw, the group’s executive director. “You come into your best years in terms of wisdom, experience and leisure time,” Terri says. “And if you can reach out, find friends, and share experiences, life can take on a whole new depth and richness. “Our Center also provides the opportunity for younger members to participate in activities with their parents. With people living longer, we are truly multi-generational. We have expanded our offerings to cover a wide variety of interests at reasonable cost, especially in the fitness and van trip areas.” As the “50 and Better” members grow into their much-expanded new center, they are making sure to accommodate the ongoing space rental business of the Pavilion.

Senior programs will continue as usual in new location. BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber CMYK

“For many regular customers, it will be business as usual at the Pavilion,” says Shaw. The Pavilion, known for hosting some of Mason County’s biggest and best events over the years, is now owned and operated by MCSAA, the same nonprofit organization that runs the 50 and Better Activities Center, as well as Nifty Thrifty, the group’s retail thrift store. “We’re putting some new touches on the Pavilion, and looking at ways to improve or streamline service,” Shaw says. “We look forward to continue to rent the facility for weddings, reunions, meetings and holiday events. Lots of changes, and lots of exciting times ahead.” Nifty Thrifty has also moved, replacing the former Senior Activities Center at 826 Railroad Avenue in downtown Shelton.

Go back to school with a great smile Every child wants to look their best as they head back to school this fall. Parents help by back-to school shopping but many overlook the simple steps to helping their child maintain one of their most visible features – their smile. “Now is the time to schedule a dental visit for your child,” says local Shelton dentist, Steven Bowers, DDS, "It’s never too soon to set good habits by making teeth a priority!” With all the changes in their mouths, it is important that school age kids see their dentist twice a year. Your child’s dentist can track the progress being made by the new permanent teeth and help stop any potential problems before they become costly. School is also great for establishing good brushing routines. Gone are the lazy days of summer, now is a great time to set good habits. Make sure your child brushes everyday and, “most important, ” continues Dr. Bowers, “make sure your child's toothpaste contains fluoride or –even better– ask your dentist for a daily fluoride pill subscription to promote healthy permanent teeth."

Good food is also an important factor in a healthy smile. Make sure your family gets the right building blocks for strong teeth like calcium. The recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables will greatly decrease your child’s risk of cavities. “Pack healthy fruits and vegetables for after-school snacks as these will provide more vitamins and energy as well as protect your smile.” advises Dr. Bowers. Don’t have a family dentist yet? Check out the directory on page 41 for the Chamber member list of dentists who are currently accepting new patients. It’s a good idea for your family to build a relationship with your dentist early as this will alleviate unnecessary stress and anxiety if you do have a dental issue that needs attending. Besides, every child loves visiting the treasure chest and taking home a new toothbrush! OysterFest is a community festival boasting more than 100 community partners, face painting, a beer and wine garden, live entertainment, and an art and photography competition. The Pacific Rim Oyster Open Speed & Half-Shell Oyster Shucking Contests are the centerpiece of the festival. In addition, there is an art and photography competition, seafood cook-off, free entertainment on three different stages, and wine & beer tasting provided by several Washington State wineries and microbreweries – not to mention the food vendors, none of whom may duplicate one another's delicacy.

Skookum Rotary allows only non-profit charitable organizations to be a food vendor at OysterFest. By making this requirement, Skookum Rotary further supports the local community, providing a fundraising event for other organizations as well. What a way to pay it forward! Maps, tickets, RV reservations, entertainment schedules and more are available at oysterfest.org.

Celebrate Fall with hurling pumpkins & hayrides The residents of Union bring in the autumn season with a bang – or more specifically – a volley of flying pumpkins!

Dick approached his Rotary Club to accept the challenge of planning, organizing and staging this event. They declined. Dick then approached Skookum Rotary. Tired of plant sales and cutting wood, and trips to the emergency room, Skookum said “yes” on March 10, 1982. That meant that there were less than seven months for Skookum to get its act together. They did and the results have been incredible. Oysterfest was to serve as a fund raiser for the Skookum Rotary Club Foundation and other not-for profit type 501(c)3 Mason County organizations wanting to participate. Other private and public organizations were asked to provide educational exhibits. Thirty-two years later, there are approximately 65 Mason County service organizations serving a wide variety of foods. Most of the Mason County service organizations make their yearly budget at OysterFest.

Though food is paramount there is much more to see and do. The shucking competition is fast and furious and not to be missed. The Seafood CookOff invites top chefs to compete. The organizers are very proud of the the touch tank of local live sea critters and the environmental exhibits teach us that clean water is critical, not only because of our seafood resource but also for our individual health. Funds from OysterFest allow Skookum Rotary to fund: • High school scholarships • Mason County Science Fair • Rotary Leadership Awards • Academic Excellence Program • Rotary Youth Exchange • Mason County food banks • Homeless shelter • HOST program • Adult literacy • Overseas charity efforts Oysterfest combines great food, music, a healthy dose of community spirit to be the much anticipated event, fullfilling the mission to make a fun family event.

Held in the fields of Hunter Farms, PumpkinFest celebrates the coming of fall with a mixture of the quaint country charm and innovative spark that makes the town of Union so unique.

Throughout the celebration, visitors can participate in a number of fun family-friendly events including hay mazes and tractor hayrides to Hunter Farms' scenic pumpkin patch in the foothills of Mason County. Visitors are immediately immersed in the scenery, from the sprawling fields of orange pumpkins to the verdant mural of gold and green in the surrounding hills. Nearby you’ll find that merchants, artisans, and restaurateurs alike come forth with the season’s finest. Shop for seasonal items, take in the expansive panorama of Puget Sound with a glass of vintage wine in hand, catch a performance of talented local musicians, or sample some of the delicious cuisine.

PumpkinFest's month-long event builds up to a grand finale on Halloween weekend; which is slated to includes costume contests, parties, entertainment, tours of a genuine haunted house, and an exciting catapult contest where contestants gather in the fields of Hunter Farms to compete for the title of Union's masters of pumpkin-launching. The catapult contest, which is one of PumpkinFest's most unique and definitive events, is open to any high school, nonprofit organization, business, or private group of people. Both catapults and trebuchets – catapult-like devices that use counterweights rather than tension to propel the projectile – are acceptable for entry. Teams in each division will compete for three categories – accuracy, distance, and design – with trial runs available every Saturday of PumpkinFest until the competition. For event information, ticket prices, and entry forms go to visitunion.com.

Shop local for a unique, convenient experience The Chamber has encouraged folks in Mason County to “Shop Local” for decades. Throughout the month of September, and again from Small Business Saturday to New Year’s Eve (Nov. 30 – Dec. 31) many Chamber members will offer coupons for various discounts, deals and incentives. There are many reasons that both Chamber members and the community, as a whole, should commit to Shop Local. For businesses, the reason is fairly straightforward: for relatively little discount or cost, the Chamber’s marketing campaign will drive customers to their doors. Even if it merely brings someone new in, studies show that they are likely to return as a customer or purchase something in addition to the discounted item while they are there. Participation in our Shop Local campaign is a free benefit to our members– the Chamber pays for the marketing and advertising costs. By promoting our businesses, we are promoting our community.

Shop Local... You may be surprised to know that for every $100 spent locally, $74 remains here through sales tax, infrastructure and employment. Did you also know: • Small businesses have generated 64% of net new jobs over the past 15 years; • On average a small business is 250% more likely to support a local cause or non-profit than a box store; • 93% of US consumers believe it’s important to support the local small businesses that they value in their community; • 89% agree that locally-owned, independent businesses • contribute positively through taxes and jobs; • Independent retailers that are in communities with a “buy local” initiative reported revenue growth of 5.6% on average in 2010, compared to 2.1% for those elsewhere; and • Small businesses pay 44% of total U.S. private sector payroll.

We encourage you to think twice before purchasing things out of town. You may pay a dollar or two more at a local store, but you will not be paying as much for fuel to get there. Did you know that the sales tax stays here in Mason County? That means it goes toward our town, our roads and our schools.

Along these lines, our belief is that the community should shop local because when people purchase things locally, an average of 74 cents per dollar remains here in Mason County. So what this really means is that roughly 75% of each dollar goes toward keeping our stores open and, more importantly, employing people.

Furthermore, many local businesses will compete or match prices with box stores; from appliances to furniture – our businesses do what they can to give a fair, honest price while continuing to employ our neighbors.

When you purchase items out of town, it’s likely that none of those dollars will make their way back to us. Additionally, the public is receiving COUPONS for goods and services that they’re likely already using… it’s just an added incentive!

Olympic College Shelton celebrates 40 Years Teresa McDermott | OCS Campus Director

For more than four decades, Olympic College in Shelton has provided educational opportunities to area residents. Olympic College Shelton (OCS) serves Mason County on a learning-centered 27-acre campus built in 1995. In 1968, the first OCS classes were started at Shelton High School and over the years, classes were offered at many locations that served the needs of residents in Mason County and surrounding area. In 1990, demand increased for a single campus location. The community generously donated resources, funds, and land to develop a new campus located on Alpine Way. The main building was completed in 1995 with a second building, the Johnson Library, added to the campus in 2003. Today, OCS provides personalized services, small classes, and a friendly environment for students to thrive in.

Olympic Middle School Making Great Strides Eric Barkman and Dick Case | Olympic Middle School In the midst of hearing that schools and education are falling short, it is always nice to hear a success story. I had the pleasure of seeing a presentation from the article’s authors this spring and was lucky to have them write an article to share these successes with you as well. ~Heidi McCutcheon, Chamber Director In the 2005-2006 school year only about a third of the students at Olympic Middle School passed the Math WASL. Only about half of the students passed the reading portion of the test. We dreaded the release each year in the newspaper. Now, however, our numbers are much better. Last year 56% of our sixth graders and 64% of the seventh graders passed the math portion of the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP). In reading 65% of both our sixth graders and seventh graders passed that portion of the test. Last year the state of Washington rated us “Exemplary” for our test score improvement in the 2011-2012 school year – those scores were even higher. How did we make this great change? It began with a grant from the state. Educational experts came in and studied our school in great depth. They talked to staff, parents, students and community members at large.

They looked at student scores, demographics and school systems. These experts determined that we were a very close staff that really cared about our students, but our academic programs were not rigorous enough. Once we got through the anger and tears we began a restructuring process. It began with a mission statement, “Ensure academic growth and social responsibility.” We studied the problem, looked at what other schools had done and came up with a solution. One period each day would be devoted to focused academic growth according to the needs of each individual student. Academy classes were created to offer academic interventions to the students geared to their individual needs. In reading there are three types of intervention classes – decoding (phonics), fluency, and comprehension. In math they are given classes that target the misconceptions they may have picked up in their prior learning.

If students need no intervention this time is devoted to enrichment. These classes offer something for everyone. The students were given clear learning targets; they began to take ownership for their learning, and they began to see their scores rise. Education is not stagnant – it is an ever changing process. Through hard work and research, we’ve made great strides in creating a middle school program to help all Shelton students to be successful.

Built on the principle that increased education equates to better health in the community organizations are embarking on a campaign to bring students, parents, teachers, schools, and the business community together to encourage post-high school education/training. The program, “My Dream. My Plan. We can do it!,” will launch at the beginning of the 2013/14 school year. Made possible by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that supports education in schools and in the workforce, this program is coordinated by Kim Klint, executive director of Mason Matters, a non-profit community capacity-building organization dedicated to improving the health status and quality of life of Mason County residents. “The schools will work with students early on to help them create a dream for their future,” said Klint, adding that coursework is even directed to students as young as nine. Parents and educators will be given tools for encouraging post- high school education/training. The role of businesses will be that of a youth mentor, coach, employer, or friend. She further adds that educated individuals have access to safe housing, good coping skills, and employment that provides living wages.

“We are hoping the campaign will change the conversation we are having about our youth's future. Education is one of the strongest predictors of a community’s health.” – Kim Klint All seven local school districts in Mason County are a part of the “My Dream” campaign. Out-of-school and after-school programs are also partners in the campaign. “We are partnering with local employers and reaching out to the service clubs and citizens to provide adults with meaningful and relevant ways they can engage in the project,” explained Klint.

COVER BIGHT: Lining up lines in Mason County Rachel Hansen | Bight editor Our eleven-year-old son, Luke, continually surprises us. He can’t finish a chore for “all the tea in China” and sometimes I wonder if he ever listens at all – but if it has anything to do with animals – he’s truly brilliant! Lately he has drawn us into his passion for fishing. Luke spends a lot of time in Hammersley Inlet with his flippers, mask and snorkel, just floating near the shore. Fortunately he’s a good swimmer as sometimes he is so quiet you forget he’s even there. The other day his patience paid off. Suddenly, to the utter shock of everyone on the beach, flippered-frog-boy came flying out of the water with a sole in his hand. Apparently he just drifted up behind it and grabbed it by the tail! The fish was ultimately freed but his exhilaration lasted into the week!

Luke proudly displays his hookless catch.

Two weeks ago it was squid – that’s calamari without the batter for most of us. A stranded specimen on the beach gave up their secrets, so that night we were led by a troupe of excited children to the beach armed with headlamps and construction lights.

squid evidence

For ten years we have stared out into the bay, never knowing that the waters held such excitement with schools– yes, schools – of squid right on our beach! After researching it, Luke discovered that although it is open year-round, the best time to squid jig is in the late fall and winter. Squid jigging is inexpensive and accessible – you don’t need a boat or a lot of gear – and it is a great deal of fun.

Beauty Bark, Soils, Aggregates, & More!

Our most recent adventure was a trip to the Skokomish River. On the upper side of the bridge near Hunter’s Farm was a virtual wall

of rubber-clad anglers – on the other side we watched giant salmon weave back and forth in the shade of the bridge. Luke tried to warn them of the perils just meters away – but I don’t think they heard.

With over thirty-five major lakes and 100’s of miles of saltwater shoreline – not to mention the many rivers and streams, Mason County has opportunities for anglers all year long. By August the season on the Skokomish River is busy with these Kings ranging 20 lbs plus as they move up river. The Chinook are first, with weather & water temperature dictating theit early start. A little rain and cooler temperatures are a good sign. After these fish have entered their respective rivers, the upper canal will be opened. There is also a great Coho fishery in DaBob Bay open later in September when the hatchery fish return. September is a prime time for Coho and Chum salmon fishing in Hood Canal and Puget Sound areas. Fishing for Chinook salmon tapers off in October, but Coho fishing is still good in the Skokomish and other rivers. By November, the main catch in Puget Sound is Blackmouth salmon. Many lakes close for trout fishing October 31, but some remain open throughout the year, like Lake Isabella and Island Lake. The best bet to fish for Blackmouth salmon in the winter is in Puget Sound near-shore areas.

Although dozens of lakes are open for fishing year-round, those opening in April are heavily stocked with hatchery trout, greatly improving anglers’ chances of catching fish. Trout generally bite well until mid-summer, but tend to lose interest when the water temperature gets too warm. In Puget Sound, fishing for resident Blackmouth salmon winds down in April. Fisheries for wild steelhead run through midApril on several rivers.

? w o n k u o Did y Puget Sound waters offer a unique

family activity: SQUID JIGGING! A sport that requires simple, inexpensive fishing tackle, recreational squid fishing is available year round. Squid feed mainly at night and are attracted to light, which is why piers and docks are good locations for jigging.

Local outfitters like Verles (Shelton) or Hood Canal Marina (Union) are great resources for current conditions. Visit wdfw.wa.gov for details on opening day, boundary lines, and fishing tips.

Hungry squid lurk in the dark fringes near patches of lighted water and then dart into the bright area in pursuit of food such as young herring and other small fishes. The most common species of squid found in Puget Sound waters is the Pacific squid, averaging around 8”. With a long tapered body and triangular tail fins, these fast-moving, ten-armed mollusks are also known as calamari when prepared as food. In all areas, except Hood Canal (which is currently closed to squid fishery) the current limit is 10 lbs per person, all squid anglers 15 years or older must carry a current Washington fishing license. Licence details as well as information on fishing, preparing and cooking squid are available at wdfw.wa.gov.
