Dear Fellow Members, We hear it everywhere right now. Jobs, jobs, jobs. We all want to see more created, especially here in our community. Considering that 41% of the private sector workforce is from small companies, it is easy to understand why we hear so much focus on small business growth. Our state has the third highest business start up rate in the country, but conversely we have the second highest business failure rate. What to do and why do I bring this up? I bring it up because challenges create opportunities. There is no reason why we cannot make our region the most desirable business market. The beauty of the area, our location, and the strength of our community are key factors we can draw on. We also
have many businesses with lots of experience. From right here in our neck of the woods we have exports to China, Japan and other Far East countries, out of state exports, some manufacturing, as well as forestry, shellfish, services, and a host of other industries. We have the talent and we can learn from each other and help each other grow. And we have the avenue to make that happen. The Chamber. If you are struggling with implementing an idea or how to navigate a market place issue give the Chamber staff a call. With over 300 members we can easily find someone willing to help you navigate your issue and mentor you.
If there is a regulatory or licensing issue that is an obstacle then again call us and we can help navigate those challenges as well. Most of all get more involved in YOUR CHAMBER. Together we can be a leader for our region and as the saying goes…“a rising tide lifts all ships”. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at the next Chamber event! Mission Statement To encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism and facilitate economic development.
The Member Services committee has been working on ways to enhance membership benefits and attract new members. In June, we asked our members to share their level of interest in: health benefits; leadership development programs; mentoring partnerships with local schools; increased networking opportunities; and training opportunities for business owners and/or employees. We received over 100 member responses, and the interest level was highest for: • leadership development programs; • mentoring partnerships with local schools; and • increased networking opportunities. Through the variety of comments, members also asked for more support when it comes to marketing.

Message from Chamber Executive Director Summer is here! And with it comes a host of events, festivals, happenings and social gatherings. July has some of my favorite events: Mason Area Fair & Rodeo, the Geoduck Festival at Allyn Days and Fourth of July celebrations at Alderbrook, Hoodsport and Mason Lake. Along with all of our celebrations, also comes the Primary Election. In cooperation with the League of Women Voters and MasonWebTV.com, the Chamber will bring you two candidate forums on July 18 and July 26. One night will include the candidates for County Commissioner, the other the candidates for the 35th District State Representatives. I hope you’ll join us for these events and get to better know those vying to represent you. For more information, you can go to sheltonchamber.org/ vote2012. The bulk of our membership renewals go out in July, you may have received yours already. With your membership, I hope you’ll consider increasing your
business’ visibility by joining our President’s Circle. For as little as $8 a month, you can effectively spotlight your business at our membership meetings, eBlasts and even here, in the BIGHT. Give me a call if you would like to learn more. In June we began filming for three 30-second commercials promoting Mason County Tourism. These commercials target specific groups to stay and play here. The target groups include Families, Outdoor Adventure Seekers, and Couples/ Singles. If you see a film crew lurking around different events and activities, smile! You may get some face time on a number of different networks promoting our slice of paradise.

A “Bite” of History
Justin Cowling, Mason County Historical Society Shown here at Dayton Crossing is the first locomotive purchased by the Satsop Railroad Company. This 0-4-2T was built in 1885 by the Porter Company in Pittsburgh, PA and was the first locomotive that ever ran in Shelton. It operated under the Satsop name until the company was bought out by Alfred Anderson and Sol Simpson, when it became part of the original fleet for the Peninsular Railroad Company in 1895. The engine was retired in the late 1940’s and put on display at Grisdale Logging Camp until 1985 at which point it was restored to full working order by Dave Skagen. Affectionately referred to as “Dinky”, the locomotive currently resides in Auburn, Washington.

Port Seeks Public Input on Future of Mason County Fairgrounds Currently the Fairgrounds is scheduled to demolished in 2014, but at a Port meeting in early June, Commissioner Hupp proposed a plan to explore the possibility of leaving the fairgrounds in its present location. Commissioner Taylor supported his proposal, stating that the commissioners “are the elected officials, the representatives of our community” and that they need to formulate a plan representing the wishes of the community.” Hupp’s plan includes a background on how the fairgrounds reached its position and proposes a resolution to rebuild trust in the Port.
His plan includes the option of relocating three of the existing buildings to comply with FAA aviation safety requirements while leaving key facilities in place. Port Executive Director, John Dobson, proposed moving the facility to a new location on the Port property that is not within the area of concern. Both are positive for citizens and Fairground users.

COMMUNITY FAIR TRANSLATES TO LOCAL SUPPORT For over a century the Fair has impacted the young and old in Mason County. Many families represent generations of participants in fair activities -- from building the grounds to entering exhibits. July 27-29 the Fair celebrates it’s third year with great strides in grounds improvements and enhancements. Since March, dedicated teams of volunteers from fair departments, community groups and local businesses have been dedicating weekends to garden, paint, pressure wash and “spruce-up” the fairgrounds. This renewed community support is an extension of the Fair group itself. After the County dropped support of the Fair in 2009, volunteers came together to form an association that allowed the Mason “Area” Fair to continue youth programs that include State placement for 4-H’ers and FFA students. Fair entry is open to all people, all ages in, and outside of, the county. Event organizers are once again partnering with local non-profits and organizations as well as many local and regional bands and entertainers to present the best community agricultural festival ever!
The NPRA Rodeos is Friday at 7 pm and Saturday at 6 pm. Kids Day is Saturday with a Boot Scramble and other events. Sunday’s entertainment will include a Gran Jaripeo De Lujo, or Mexican Rodeo, beginning at 2 pm. The Mexican Rodeo will include children’s “mutton busting.” Scheduled entertainment for 2012 includes a brand new line-up of music as well as dance and fire troupes, comedians, children’s entertainment and stage shows and contests! With four stages, there is plenty to entertain the entire family all weekend! More than ever in any years past, we encourage you to take the time to submit your fair entries. You won’t just win a ribbon, you will be winning acclaim and supporting the future of your fair!
Volunteer assistance is an essential ingredient in the success of the Fair. There are many different kinds of work to do that can reflect your interest and abilities. Not all jobs require specialized training or preparation, or long hours. We need your help! Please feel free to call if you would like more information on entering your exhibits, getting a vendor booth or would like to offer your suggestions on how we as a community can make this event a success in 2012! The Mason Area Fair & NPRA Rodeo will be on July 27-29. For more information go to www.MasonCountyFair.org or call 360-427-5599. Vendor applications and exhibitor’s handbook are available online.
Stormwater Task Force Nears Recommendation Julie Sund Nichols, Attorney at Law and Government Affairs Committee Chair The Mason County Commissioners may soon be considering a combination of new fees and taxes to fund a clean water program. For the past year, a task force managed by the Mason County Public Works Department has been evaluating funding sources in order to address pollution from stormwater. The group will be presenting their recommendations to the Commissioners this summer. The Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee has been monitoring the progress of this group. Highlights of the proposed new program include public education, enforcing standards for dealing
with stormwater on construction sites (including re-development), water quality monitoring, septic system maintenance, county road drainage system maintenance and retro-fit construction and program “management.”
be based on an assumed average while commercial rates would be based on actual measured impervious area. • Vehicle license fee hike. About $2 per year per vehicle. • Property tax hike. About $16 per $1,000 of taxable value per year.
All of this adds up to $2.365 million, annually, which the Task Force proposes to fund through a combination of: • On-site septic fees. This would be a flat fee per septic system of around $11 per year. • Stormwater utility rate. $2.76 per 1,000 square feet of impervious surface (annual rate) on developed residential and commercial property. Residential rates would
