Beware the Ides of March Heidi McCutcheon | Chamber Director
SHELTONMASONCOUNTY
2017 BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Though Julius Caesar needed to be weary of these words, fortunately, we do not. To me, March is a time of transition. We see the first sampling of spring weather, which is quickly torn away for another blustery winter day. However, it gives us hope of what we can look forward to. There are many things changing in Mason County. Sometimes it feels like we move two steps forward and one step back – much like the weather in March. That said, I have great hope for the future. We have some incredible folks in leadership roles that are committed to our community. For a major part of this, I believe thanks are in order to City Commission for hiring Ryan Wheaton as City Manager. In six short months, he has tackled some decades-long lingering issues and has developed a fairly new leadership team. Many of the leadership team live here, work here, and their kids go to school here. That gives great motivation to do the right thing, for the right reason, at the right price. Many of you have noted a change in the intersection at 4th & Railroad. Some of you have expressed dismay while others of you have questions – mostly asking why. The stop light at that intersection is failing. At first I thought this meant that the lights would stop but it’s more than that: can you imagine if all the lights turned green at the same time?
A malfunction like this could result in serious injury or even a fatality. That intersection had to be addressed. What is being tested now is if they need replacement. Originally the city considered a four way stop or a small roundabout, but these were taken off the table because of public feedback and actual need. It remains to be seen if this intersection will remain like the others along Railroad from 1st to 7th or if a traffic mechanism is necessary. Your feedback is welcome and encouraged; I do request that you be kind in your delivery of that feedback. Staff is trying hard to come up with the right solution. If you don’t like it, you can convey that in constructive manner. Hopefully, this intersection is not the only change we’ll see downtown this spring. Last year, we applied for a grant through the National Endowment for the Arts to create a public gathering space downtown. To do so, we would partner with the Pomegranate Center, a nonprofit organization from Issaquah that has been working in community development for the last 20 years. This

name may sound familiar to you as in the spring of 2012, the Chamber held a meeting attended by nearly 100 citizens, business owners, and community leaders to discuss opportunities for the community to partner and become more connected with one another. The Pomegranate Center focuses on four main aspects for a successful project: a ready community, effective partners (governmental and business), momentum (timelines are typically six months long from start to finish) and different opportunities to get involved, so everyone can contribute. A perk of this process is that their methodology focuses on teaching people how to lead, so most communities see a number of additional projects following the first. I’m very hopeful to receive this grant and get things moving! I’ll let you know if we get it and, if so, what happens next. As you can tell, I’m pretty excited about our opportunities. Bring on the ides! I can hardly wait to see where we are at this time next year.

President's Message John Lester | 2017 President of the Chamber Board Ad Manager, Shelton-Mason County Journal
Abraham Lincoln once said “I will prepare and someday my chance will come.” Although preparation isn’t always easy or enjoyable, when we focus as a cohesive group working toward a common goal we are certain to achieve great progress. As a county, we’ve worked diligently to prepare for the day that people begin asking “Why NOT Mason County?” instead of “Why Mason County?” We know progress is happening in our county when we are seeing Sierra Pacific construct the largest stud mill in North America moving another day closer to full production, Little Creek Casino Resort and Lucky Dog Casino expanding, car loads of merchandise being purchased from Garage Sale Maniacs, development in the Port of Shelton, and countless piles of dirt moving throughout the county as new commercial
and residential construction begins. The list of expansion and growth is far too long to list, but all of these examples add up to one common thing: jobs! All kinds of jobs! Jobs are the fuel of our economy. We have businesses willing to hire and train individuals for career positions. Business owners want to find people eager to learn their trade and earn competitive salaries doing it.

We took a major step in solidifying the foundation of our future with the recent Shelton School Bond and Levy passage. This was a great example of how we, as a community, can pull together and help one another. The two largest school districts in our county will both have state of the art high schools. How many other counties can say that? Your Chamber will continue to be a driving force in strengthening partnerships between the business community and our schools. I am a proud Shelton High School graduate. Both of my sons are Shelton School District students who will one day also graduate from Shelton High School. I work at the Shelton–Mason County Journal, which has provided a weekly newspaper for 130 years to Mason County residents. Our roots run deep. You will find the same in your Mason County Chamber staff – deep roots. Your Chamber of Commerce has worked tirelessly to get us to this point and those efforts will continue to build and strengthen a better community for all of us. For those of you who attended our 94th Annual Awards Gala – thank you! It is an exciting way to start the year off with our “Superbowl.” My congratulations to President’s
Award recipient Alex Apostle, Volunteer of the Year recipient Dan Cooling, Business of the Year recipient Shelton Cinemas, Citizen of the Year recipient Xinh Dwelley, and to all award nominees. I am honored to serve as your Chamber Board president and look forward to seeing you at ribbon cuttings, Business After Hours gatherings, and many of the Chamber events that are organized throughout the year. I want to extend a special invitation to those of you who have not yet gotten involved. Devote some time to get to know your local Chamber of Commerce staff, Board, and fellow members – you will undoubtedly discover that your struggles and successes are similar to other business owners in this community. Your input can make a real difference. I will close with a quote from Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonalds, “When you’re green, you’re growing. When you’re ripe, you rot.” Let’s keep the momentum of growth continuing TOGETHER!

Businesses, individuals honored at
Chamber Awards Gala On January 20 the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce held its 94th Anniversary and Annual Awards Gala at Little Creek Casino Resort. Nearly 300 guests gathered to celebrate the past year, witness the installation of the Chamber board, and anxiously await the announcement of the winners of the Chamber Awards. The evening’s program kicked off with a Toast to 2016 courtesy of Bakala State Farm Insurance. Little Creek Casino Resort, the premier sponsor of the event, delivered a delectable four-course meal expertly paired with wines. Of course, Cooper Studios captured the entire affair from the polished programs and menus provided by The Shopper to the excitement and energy of each honoree. The Chamber’s executive director Heidi McCutcheon opened the evening’s event, saying, "Our community is blessed to have people and businesses such as tonight's nominees working to make Mason County even better. Although you do great things simply because it is the right thing to do, tonight we gather to recognize the impact of your efforts on our community, making it a better place to live, work, and play."

Business of the Year honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Shelton and Mason County business community over the past year. Nominees were Alderbrook Resort & Spa, Nifty Thrifty Store, and Shelton Cinemas, who won the honor.
Shelton Cinemas is an
independently-owned theater nestled into downtown Shelton. In addition to offering a variety of films for our entertainment, Shelton Cinemas quietly and continually gives back to the community. The dedicated management and staff: create unique events for local charities and churches as well as reward partner with schools for reward and educational programs. They have hosted sing-along special features and offered “Free Movie Mondays” for children in the summers, shown holiday films at Halloween Spooktacular and Holiday Magic while collecting no admission other than non-perishables for the local food bank, and they have donated to countless auctions, benefits, and organizations including Relay For Life, Sound Learning, and Kiwanis to name a few. For more than thirty years Shelton Cinemas has creatively partnered with its regular customers and its neighbors to make a profound impact. 6

Xinh Dwelley The Citizen of the Year is given to the individual who has made the most outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large and who has given freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. Amy Cooper of Cooper Studios and Kevin Schmelzlen of Shelton to the Top made the ballot along with award winner Xinh Dwelley who retired in October, closing her restaurant Xinh’s Clam & Oyster House.
Xinh Dwelley began her culinary journey as a teenager picking up odd jobs at a US Army mess hall. In 1970, she landed a job as an oyster shucker with Taylor Shellfish. The company helped her open her Asian fusion restaurant featuring local shellfish in 1996. Xinh’s Clam & Oyster House became one of the first regionally recognized shellfish restaurants, paving the way for countless others. Xinh donates her food, time, and talent to countless civic groups and nonprofits. Even as she made plans to close the restaurant, she continued to commit to benefits and special events which will take place long after her retirement. She also saves money all year long so that she may purchase food and supplies for a leper colony near her hometown in southern Vietnam. “Her life and career serve as
an example of what is right about this country… the possibilities, the potential, and the success that can be attained with true passion and an incredible work ethic.” The Chamber also recognizes its volunteers for their contributions to the Chamber's programs and activities. Making the list of people who give their time, talents, energies, and expertise to enhance the business community and the community at large were Stephanie Boysen of Bella Acres and Lloyd Mullen formerly of the Shelton-Mason County Journal; the Volunteer of the Year award went to Dan Cooling of Anchor Bank.

of a President’s Choice award, presented this year to a surprised Dr. Alex Apostle, Superintendent of the Shelton School District. The Chamber’s 2016 president of the board Jennifer Owens said: “The recipient of this award has made an incredible and undeniable impact. The honoree has approached both challenges and opportunities with passion, sincerity, and positivity. So quickly did he weave himself into the fabric of our community that it was with great surprise that I realized he had only joined us some eighteen months ago. This person has poured his heart and soul into developing meaningful partnerships with local businesses, stakeholders, and leaders to huge effect. He has proclaimed 'Shelton Proud, Shelton Now' and each day rises early, working tirelessly on efforts like Graduation Matters Shelton, increasing school pride with innovative community events, and developing creative solutions such as the health and science academy. He does all of this while encouraging staff, teachers, and students as well as educating the

community about the importance of the upcoming Bond & Levy.
Dr. Alex Apostle, the superintendent of Shelton Schools, has proven himself to be a visionary, a collaborator, and someone who is committed to a bright future for this community.” Overall, the Annual Awards Gala was a brilliant celebration of the amazing individuals and businesses that support the Chamber and Mason County. With the number of guests attending, it is evident that the community shares in both our appreciation and our enthusiasm.

Mandolin tasting and slow jam workshops reign at What started as a small town event hosted by Kristmas Town Kiwanis has grown into a must-see music weekend festival drawing nationally renowned talent. In its 13th year, Bluegrass from the Forest will again be held at the Shelton High School Campus on May 19-21. Bluegrass families and fans turn out in hoards for the event’s workshops and its live bands. As if the music isn’t enough, the festival includes on-site camping for an experience you won’t soon forget. Grab your guitar, pack up your tent, and make a weekend out of it. As is custom at bluegrass festivals, Saturday morning will include a Band Scramble. Names will be drawn to form a random band that hopefully includes a bass, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and singer. The newly formed bands have 40 minutes to come up with a tune to perform on stage.

Not into mandolins? No worries! Marv Sobolesky hosts the Slow Jam and shares his knowledge with players of all skill levels. Popular fiddle tunes will be played slowly at first, and then repeated at a faster tempo as folks catch on to the jam. Road Diet Test Acts on Results In July of 2016, a “Road Diet” on Railroad Avenue began. Railroad Ave between 3rd and 5th saw a lane reduction, back-in angle parking, extended sidewalks, and painted bulb outs. This test area was chosen as the streetlight at the intersection of 4th and Railroad was nearing the end of its life. These tests were a result of the Downtown Visioning Plan created by community stakeholders in 2015 to increase pedestrian safety and walkability, encouraging more people to come downtown. Initially, the Road Diet planned to test several alternatives to replace the stoplight at 4th and Railroad. Those alternatives included a four-way stop and a roundabout. Based on citizen feedback and data gathered regarding traffic volume, neither of these alternatives was determined to be a good option. The City has settled on an alternative plan for this intersection that addresses feedback gathered from the community and continues to keep downtown pedestrian-friendly. This intersection will now mirror the other intersections between 1st & 7th as the failing stoplight on Railroad is being removed. Drivers approaching Railroad on 4th will now come to a stop sign. The City has ordered crosswalk rapid flashers to ensure pedestrian safety at this intersection – it will take a few weeks for them to arrive and be installed.
On Friday, March 10 stop signs were installed and later the stoplight was removed. The Chamber and our partners, including the City of Shelton, are committed to trying different solutions to see our city thrive. Some items of the Road Diet test, such as narrowing lanes to one lane in each direction, have worked well and it is expected to be implemented permanently. Other items, such as the back-in angle parking, were not as well received. City staff has indicated that they will recommend to Mayor Cronce, Commissioner McDowell, and Commissioner Moore that the north side of Railroad revert back to parallel parking
Math for Life Connects Students, Businesses April is national Math Awareness Month and the Chamber is excited to introduce Math for Life in Mason County. This program will take place during Shelton School District’s spring break (April 3-9) as a way to engage students and the community around real life math applications. Students who attend local schools are invited to participate in the free program, which is designed to help demonstrate how math is used in real life. It’s essentially a math treasure hunt: students take the Math for Life map they received at school (or downloaded from the Chamber’s website) to five participating businesses. They’ll get a stamp for talking to someone about how math is used at that business and solving an age-appropriate math problem. When they submit a map with five or more stamps BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

upon their return to the classroom, they’ll be entered for a chance to win prizes. MATH FOR LIFE is a win-win-win. It helps create bonds between local schools and businesses. Students benefit from seeing how math works in different career fields. Parents get something fun do to with their kids. Check out Math for Life, download the map and view a list of participating locations, plus see what prizes are up for grabs – all online at sheltonchamber.org/ mathforlife.

The 4th Annual Waves of Perfection
Food & Wine Event
Victor Mortazavi can’t help but smile when he talks about this food & wine event – his passion for it is evident. “There’s not a wine event like it in Western Washington,” he says. As a Master Sommelier, he would know. Originally touted as a wine and chocolate event, Little Creek Casino Resort’s 4th Annual Waves of Perfection has become so much more.
Now recognized as a culinary journey, Waves of Perfection serves up the experience of food and wine as the entertainment. On May 20 the event moves to the Skookum Creek Event Center at the casino after outgrowing its previous home at the Squaxin Island Museum Library and Research Center. More than 200 wines will be featured at this year’s event, accompanied by food pairing suggestions from traditional cheeses and chocolates to foie gras and salmon gravlax. The location isn’t all that’s new, as educational ‘mini-tastings’
will also be offered. Every 40 minutes these tastings will be presented for different varietals–from sparkling and bright whites to bold reds and heady rosés. For instance, guests can sit in on a tasting of Burgundy wine, sampling several types, learning its history from origin to the new world, discussing the characteristics that different regions have on the grapes. “There’s something for everybody,” Mortazavi assures. A favorite feat of his was seeing a woman who professed to downright hate wine find a bottle she liked and finish off the greater
half. If you are eager to experience this culinary journey, tickets are available online at little-creek.com/entertainment under “Event Center.” Pre-purchased tickets are $65 and are all inclusive for all food and wine, saving you the hassle of purchasing a bite here or a sip there. Doors open at 4:30 PM on May 20; tickets may also be purchased at the door but they’ll cost an additional $10. A silent auction and golden ticket raffle will also be onsite. Make a night of it if you like – package deals for two tickets and hotel room at the casino begin at $249.

It is difficult (if not impossible) to maintain a house or commercial facility dust free and entirely clean at all times. If you take five minutes to walk around and review the areas included on this checklist, it will give you a general idea of what the rest of the building looks like. A cleaning company should properly vacuum, sweep, dust, and mop. These are basic cleaning tasks, but there is much more to cleaning. When contracting for your housekeeping needs, make sure there is a cleaning plan for all areas needing to be detailed regularly. This is typically known as a "rotation system." For instance, using a regular bi-weekly maid service as an example, all bathrooms and the kitchen would be detailed in one visit, rotating dusting and vacuuming during the following visit.
After being cooped up indoors for the winter, it’s almost time to fling open the windows, shoo away the cobwebs, and tackle your annual spring cleaning. Let’s admit it – cleaning is a pretty easy thing to do. Many people may not enjoy it or have the time, but
paying someone to do the cleaning for you and if they don’t have these must-have principles, you may not be getting your money’s worth. To assist you in this review, take a look at the deep cleaning checklist I’ve prepared on the following page. After reviewing, you should know if you are getting the desired results.

Did you know?
While spider webs can appear from one day to another, you can tell whether it is new or old; a new web will be thin and hard to spot. An old web will be thicker and hang low because of dust collecting, making it much easier to spot even without direct light.
What to look for in a BATHROOMS: Check if toilet bowl is clean, but don’t forget the base and the bottom of the toilet seat. Light fixtures, including light bulbs, should be dust free. Vents should be cleaned at least monthly so the amount of dust will be minimal to none. KITCHEN: Make sure the backsplash has been wiped down. It’s easy to miss while wiping down the counter but doing so means a cleaner, healthier prep space. Check that the correct cleaners are being used to ensure that countertops are properly cleaned and the surface is maintained (especially on granite or marble counter tops). Look to see if the outside of your kitchen cabinetry has been wiped down and don’t forget to see if the inside is thoroughly cleaned as well. THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME: Take the time to inspect your ceilings, ensuring that spider webs have been removed and ceiling fans, chandeliers, light fixtures, vents, etc., have been cleaned. Make sure that furniture has been moved to clean floors on both carpeted and hard surfaces. Slide your finger along the baseboards to check for dust and debris; they should be wiped down monthly. Check doors for any food, makeup, handprints, etc., like the spider webs, they can stay there for long periods of time.

The Many Benefits of Mulching Ashley Brady | Brady Trucking & Landscape Supply Spring is the perfect time to mulch as you prepare for warmer days ahead, yet the soil is still moist. Simply put, mulch is any material you can use to put around your garden to benefit either the soil or plant itself. During the warmer months it is a struggle to keep the soil at optimum moisture and temperature levels. Choosing a plant-based mulch such as beauty bark or organic compost will prevent direct contact of the sun’s rays and reduce the amount of water loss by up to 75%. A layer of mulch also prevents the soil from becoming compacted from foot traffic or heavy precipitation. If your soil becomes compact, water is more likely to run off rather than soak in. Following are some popular types of mulch and their properties.
Certified Organic Compost
Finely ground decomposed plant matter that helps retain soil moisture and utilize nutrients.
Evergreen Mulch
Finely ground evergreen clippings, perfect for those acid loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and blueberries.
If you have specific questions, Brady’s knowledgeable and friendly staff can help get your garden ready for spring. There is a great variety of high quality products including twelve types of bark and mulch, five soils, three composts, and eighteen grades of rock.
Beauty Bark
Many different varieties and textures to choose from.
Aggregate/Drain Rock
Allows rain to easily penetrate while reducing water evaporation.
