From the I-5 corridor, take exit 104 in Olympia onto Hwy 101 toward Shelton. From the coast and SW Washington, take Hwy 12 eastbound, continuing on as it turns into State Route 8. Exit in McCleary. State Route 106 follows the south shore of Hood Canal – from Union to Belfair, where it meets up with Highway 3 towards Bremerton and Kitsap. The Southworth Ferry makes a nice trip from downtown Seattle.

Whether raising funds through a rubber duck race or hosting an inter-tidal mud run to support a vibrant community – Mason County’s unique events are fueled by enthusiasm and passion that represents generations who feel strongly about the heritage and success of their community. Traveler Days in Union cele-

brates the return of The Traveler, an image that appears on the Olympics when the snowscape is just right. The festival welcomes the return of the Traveler as a sign of Spring and is a four weeks long celebration with culinary and wine events, live music and a focus on the arts.

On May 16 energy is focused at the Shelton High School with the annual event, Bluegrass From the Forest. Produced by Kristmas Town Kiwanis, this festival draws musicians from all over the Northwest for performances, competitions and all night jamming in the campground! What’s better than tables laden with chocolate? When these fabulous desserts also have an amazing selection of wines expertly selected to complement and enhance the nuance of gourmet chocolates!

Mason County Forest Festival celebrates it’s 70th year

with the addition of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Western Regional Qualifier on May 31. This real-time logging show hosts competitors from AK, ID, OR and WA competing for a position in the national event. Saturday’s Festival events begin with a Fun Run and Grand Parade, followed by a logging show and an impressive fireworks show in the evening.

Sunday’s events include vendors, a car show, an Annas Bay Chorale concert and, yes, a rubber duck race down Goldborough Creek sponsored by Kristmas Town Kiwanis. For a list of events visit masoncountyforestfestival.com.

29 attracts vehicles from all over to line Railroad Ave and be sure to enjoy the pie and ice cream. Proceeds benefit the Historical Society.

Head north to Tahuya the weekend following Independence Day for the annual Tahuya Day and Parade celebrating the unique and quirky heritage of a place you live at “by choice.”

Allyn Days will be held July 1921. Enjoy vendors and great food including a salmon bake Saturday. Recently developed is the addition of Sunday’s Geoduck Festival. This event celebrates this iconic bivalve with specialty dishes and contests including an inter-tidal mud run or “geoduck gallop.” The Grapeview Water & Arts Festival on July 26 highlights a

large art show with pottery, sculpture, jewelry, glass, woodworking and photography exhibits.

The Mason Area Fair is scheduled for the last weekend in July. Also that weekend, don’t miss the roping and wrangling action of the Mason County Rodeo with two exciting evening performances. Local Fourth of July Fireworks Thunder Over the Canal

Fireworks Show at Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union is on Thursday, July 3. Live music, contests and great food happen all day on their waterfront lawn. The spectacular firework show starts at 10:20 PM. Call (360) 898-2200 for details. The Hoodsport Marina is the location for fireworks on Saturday, July 5 as part of Celebrate Hoodsport hosted by Hoodsport Community Events Association. The weekend festival features a Street Fair with vendors, with an afternoon auction followed by an amazing fireworks display at dusk. Please note that within City of Shelton limits, fireworks may only be discharged from 9:00 AM to midnight on the 4th of July. Boating

Options for boating in Mason County are varied and unlimited. There are numerous fresh water lakes and salt water ramps accessing the southern portion of Puget Sound. The jewel of the county is Hood Canal. This 62 mile inland fjord is relatively unused by boaters. Fuel is limited, but launching ramps and pump out stations are conveniently located. Cruising the canal offers striking views of the Olympic Mountains, access to state shellfish beaches, and seasonal fishing, crabbing and shrimping. Boat rentals and charters are available throughout the area.

Water, water, everywhere Since long before the first European explorers sailed among the islands and bays of the Salish Sea, the native tribes fished, hunted and lived off the abundant wild plants, animals and bounty of the sea. Today, the cold, clear waters of South Puget Sound still provide a harvest of salmon and shellfish. The great depths of Hood Canal – more than 600 feet deep – produce an annual shrimp catch that has become a late-spring ritual going back many generations. Commercial shellfish harvesting is big business in Mason County. Taylor Shellfish Farms, the world’s largest exporter of manila clams, as well as many medium and small oyster, geoduck and clam farms can be found up and down the waterways of Hood Canal and South Puget Sound.

Oysters can be found on most beaches of Hood Canal and South Puget Sound, and those blessed or lucky enough to own a waterfront home often gather, eat or farm their own shellfish. Several state parks and county parks allow public beachcombing and shellfish gathering. There are many public boat launches and fuel at several marinas. Boating and sailing are treasured to such a high degree that three of the county’s state parks, Stretch Point, Hope Island and McMicken Island, offer boat access only.

South Puget Sound and Hood Canal are growing increasingly more popular as water playgrounds for kayak enthusiasts. Generally calm water and a growing number of public kayak beaching and take-out points make it possible to paddle for days along the ever-changing shore.

Tide-ripped saltwater passages and calm salty coves, rivers running white and swift or backward in estuaries, and lakes of every size make Hood Canal and Mason County the ideal destination for kayakers & canoers. Experts – Try Skokomish River, using a good put-in on Sunnyside Road, just north of the Skokomish Valley Road or launch at Shelton and paddle (with the tide) out Hammersley Inlet to beautiful Hope Island. Novice – Paddlers can cruise the lower reaches of the Skokomish near Union, explore the shores of Hood Canal or explore any of the lakes. An interesting two-hour paddle starts at the boat launch at Lake Isabella. At the far end of the lake, enter Mill Creek through a sea of water lily pads. Glide through the willows for half a mile before the stream begins to drop and becomes too shallow to navigate. Another great Mason County water destination is Lake Kokanee, or Lower Lake Cushman; this scenic lake can channel winds, watch for weather changes.

Shellfish Gathering Come prepared with buckets, boots and crab pots! Spring is the time to

harvest clams and oysters on saltwater beaches. Many beaches are open to harvesting during summer, but the taste and condition of their meat are not always at their best at this time of year. Most species spawn in summer, which makes their flesh watery and tasteless. If you do harvest clams or oysters during the summer months, make sure to keep them on ice or eat them soon after harvest. Harvest regulations vary from beach to beach—be sure to check the rules at wdfw.wa.gov before digging. Fall and Winter are also a good time to harvest clams and oysters on saltwater beaches.

South Puget Sound Hope Island State Park, accessible only by boat and located between Steamboat and Squaxin Islands, is a great place for clams and oysters. North Bay, between Allyn and Victor, has enhanced oyster beds and several varieties of clams. A map shows which areas are best for harvesting. DNR 24/Grapeview, DNR beach clams and oysters open all year.

DNR 20/Stretch Island, DNR owned beach, clams and oysters open all year. McMicken Island State Park, clams and oysters open all year. Oakland Bay Recreation Tideland, 6 miles north of Shelton, makes for a fun but muddy day collecting oysters, manila clams and eastern softshell clams.

Harvesters –Please Fill in Your Holes

Hood Canal Belfair State Park, 3 miles west of Belfair, is an excellent beach for oysters year-round. Stay overnight, and grill your catch right from a campsite near the water. Lilliwaup State Park, clams and oysters open all year. Rendsland Creek, DNR owned clams and oysters open all year. Twanoh State Park, clams and oysters open all year. West Dewatto, DNR owned beach clams and oysters open all year.

South Dougall Point, clams and oysters open all year. DNR 33, 47 & 48, DNR owned beach clams and oysters open all year. Cushman Park, 13 miles north of Shelton on Hwy 101, has several varieties of clams and oysters. Eagle Creek, 3 miles north of Lilliwaup on Hwy 101, has excellent oyster beds. The scenery along this stretch of highway make the extra drive to this little beach well worth the effort.

Filling in the holes you dig protects both shellfish & people.

The substrate dug from the hole is usually placed in a pile on the beach near the hole. This pile can get quite large and it may not wash away or flatten out with the waves or incoming tide. The pile can cover creatures that live on the beach. These animals suffocate and die when they cannot take in fresh seawater. Another reason to fill in the holes is to keep people from falling or tripping. Even a small hole becomes a hazard when the tide covers it. Someone wading at the water’s edge is likely to take an unexpected dip if they step into the hole or trip at its edge!

Recreational Crab Fishing Several species of crab are found in Washington’s marine waters and along its shores, though only a few are large enough to be of commercial and sport interest. Two crab species (Dungeness and Red Rock) are harvested locally. Crabs are most commonly harvested with crab pots but are also caught using ring nets, dip nets, and by wading in shallow water during spring and early summer. Opens at 7:00 AM Monday July 1st . Closed Tuesday and Wednesday July 2nd and July 3rd. Then open Thursdays through Mondays each week through Labor Day September 2nd.

Year round fishing opportunities With over 35 major lakes and hundreds of miles of saltwater shoreline, Mason County has opportunities for anglers all year long. Visit wddfw.wa.gov for the most up to date license information, regional maps, fishing tips, identification and limits.

Spring

(March-May) For many anglers, the fishing year starts on the last Saturday in April, when trout season opens on lowland lakes. Although dozens of lakes are open for fishing year-round, those opening in April are heavily stocked with hatchery trout, greatly improving anglers’ chances of catching fish. Trout generally bite well until mid-summer, but tend to lose interest when the water temperature gets too warm. In Puget Sound, fishing for resident Blackmouth salmon winds down in April. Fisheries for wild Steelhead run through mid-April on several Olympic Peninsula rivers.

Summer (June-August)

Anglers continue to reel in trout from lakes and ponds, most of which remain open to fishing through October. The salmon fishing season off the Washington coast generally opens in late June and runs through early fall. By late July, as more salmon move in from the coast, fishing heats up in the Puget Sound and Hood Canal. The Chinook season on the Skokomish River is always busy with these “kings” ranging 20 lbs plus as they move up river.

Fall (September-November)

September is a prime time for Coho and Chum salmon fishing. Coho can be found in Hood Canal and the Puget Sound areas of Mason County. Fishing for Chinook salmon tapers off in October, but coho fishing is still good in the Skokomish and other Puget Sound rivers. By November, the main catch in Puget Sound is Blackmouth salmon, which remain in nearshore waters throughout the year.

Winter

(December -February) Many lakes close for trout fishing Oct. 31, but some remain open throughout the year, like Lake Isabella and Island Lake, providing good fishing for anglers willing to brave colder weather. Opportunities to catch salmon are limited during the winter months. The best bet is to fish in Puget Sound nearshore areas for Blackmouth salmon. Anglers can also fish for chum salmon in the Nisqually River in December and January. Hatchery-reared fish return to rivers in the Puget Sound area and on the Olympic Peninsula throughout the winter months.

Hood Canal Chinook & Coho Fishing Lower Hood Canal salmon fishery opens July 1 but the good fishing usually starts in the first weeks of August. The Chinook are first with weather & water temperature dictating how early they start. A little rain and cooler temperatures are a good sign. Every couple years, by the first week of August, there is usually a run of Pink salmon in the Canal. Near the shoreline, you can often see them finning. After these fish have entered their respective rivers, the upper Canal will be opened. There is a great Coho fishery in DaBob Bay open later in September when the hatchery fish return.

For something a little different and a whole lot of fun for the entire family – try squid jigging throughout Puget Sound. This easy and rewarding evening activity will engage everyone from the youngest family member to the oldest! See page 26 for details.

Most local salmon fishing is by trolling at depths from 20’ to 40’ depending upon conditions and location. Local outfitters like Verles (Shelton) or Hood Canal Marina (Union) are great resources for current conditions. You can also visit the wddfw.wa.gov for details on opening day, boundary lines, and fishing tips.

Huff n Puff Trail

Goldsborough Creek Trail

The trail follows an extensive concrete fish ladder. In summer, wade among the miniature waterfalls created by the ladder. There is an educational kiosk, covered shelter, and railroad trestle spanning the creek. Take Shelton-Matlock Exit from Highway 101, pull into Ford auto dealership visible from highway. Drive through dealership, looking for iron gate where power lines and septic system are also located. Park at gate and follow clearing toward Goldsborough Creek to your right. Woods are to your immediate left, look for trail opening just before bluffs above creek. Length: 1 mile | Difficulty: easy | Topography: Dirt trail

Located northwest of Shelton in the Skokomish River Recreation Area. Travel US Highway 101 to the Skokomish Valley Road, (7 mi. North of Shelton, 7 mi. South of Hoodsport). Turn west on the Valley road and drive about 5.5 miles to the junction with FS Road #23. Turn right and proceed for 10 miles on FS Road #23 to the junction of FS Road #2353. Veer left and continue on FS Road #23 (end of pavement) another 8 miles to the Spider Lake trailhead. This trail loops around Spider Lake through old growth forest. Waterfall with wading pond reflections are visible from trailhead. Follow a wooded trail that runs above the falls and continues up a gentle ravine, then return on same route to parking area. Isabella Lake State Park Trails

Theler Wildlife Refuge (360) 275-4898 22871 NE State Route 3, Belfair A birder’s favorite, this wide, well-groomed trail passes through grassy marshland beside the shores of the Union River where it meets Hood Canal. Serene views, birds and wildlife greet the walker on this wheelchair-accessible trail.

Twanoh State Park Trail Lush, tall canopy of cedar and fir. Trail follows Twanoh Creek then ascends the gentle bluffs above. Wildflower and moss beds, then follow with a warm swim in Hood Canal.

Off Road Vehicle Trails On Department of Natural Resources designated ORV trails in WA, bikes and all terrain vehicles do not need to be street legal but if you enter public roads and lands you must be licenced.

The Tahuya State Forest is said to offer the best riding during the rainy season. The area is covered by glacial till and outwash gravels, ideal for rainy weather bike riding. In the summer, riding can be extremely dusty and troubled with poor traction. There are trails for bikes and short and long base 4 wheel drives.

Direction: Two marked trailheads just before and at LeBar Horse Camp. From Highway 101, take Skokomish Valley Road for 5.5 miles, then turn right on FS 23 for 9 miles, turn right on 2353 for .75 mile, cross the river and go left for .2 mile for the hiker biker access trailhead. Brown Creek Campground Trail

This popular 23,100-acre forest provides open spaces for sightseeing, camping, nature study, fishing, hiking, horse or motorcycle riding, and mountain biking. However, the Tahuya is a State Forest, not a State Park, and recreation facilities are primitive. Visit dnr.wa.gov for complete maps and closure information.

Goldsborough Creek Trail

Home to over two miles of interpretive walking trails within 139 acres of protected salt marsh and estuary wetlands at the mouth of the Union River in Belfair. Trails give you access to plants, birds and animals in their natural habitats: forests, wetlands, saltwater & freshwater marshes, swamps, bogs and river estuaries.

Matlock Kennedy Creek chum salmon are on view as they make their way home to spawn. The Trail is open every weekend in November. Visitors will see chum salmon in their natural environment and find easy access, multiple salmon viewing platforms, interpretive signs, and trail guides to answer questions. Harstine Island State Park

This short easy hike samples the park’s woods and shoreline. There are two ways to approach the beach. Take the one on the left for more variation. Follow trail for a quarter- mile into a cool and dark ravine graced with big cedars and firs. Come to a junction, head left. Drop deeper into the ravine and after crossing a pretty little creek emerge on a quiet and secluded beach. If the tide is low, hike south a short distance beneath forested bluffs. On the return, head back to the junction and climb out of the ravine passing ancient cedars along the way. The trail right heads back to the parking lot. Follow the trail left under a canopy of mature second growth eventually looping around to Yates Rd. Dogs permitted on leash. Discovery Pass required.

391 E Wingert Rd, Shelton 43-acre marine camping park with 3,500 feet of saltwater shoreline on the northwest end of Harstine Island in south Puget Sound. The forested island park is accessible by road and bridge and is off the beaten path. Most visitors arrive by boat. The park has campsites near the docks, as well as on rolling, grassy areas. Harstine Island State Park is a day use park with beach access via a half-mile trail. It is a two mile drive from Jarrell Cove. Summer: 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Winter: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park is open year round.

Twanoh State Park

McMicken Island State Park is an 11.5 acre marine park with 1,661 feet of saltwater shoreline. It is situated in the beautiful South Puget Sound and features a pristine cove to set anchor. Visitors can enjoy the many hiking trails, viewing an active bald eagle nest and shellfish harvesting. The shellfish population is abundant and open to shellfish harvesters year round. The park is open 6:30 a.m. to dusk year round for day use. Moorage buoys are available for overnight stays.

Sandhill County Park

1000 NE Sand Hill Road, Belfair Open March – October, restrooms, one full-sized baseball field, six youth size baseball/softball fields, seasonal concession (March – August), on-site caretaker, March-July: ball fields are used by North Mason Little League, North Mason Fast Pitch and North Mason Pee Wee leagues. Theler Wildlife Refuge

22871 NE State Rte 3, Belfair, WA The refuge is home to over two miles of interpretive walking trails within 139 acres of protected salt marsh and estuary wetlands at the mouth of the Union River in Belfair. Trails are open every day from dawn to dusk, are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Trails go through a Washington Fish and Wildlife sanctuary: no dogs or domestic animals are permitted on the trails.

Tahuya State Forest

Northwest of Belfair Year-round destination, offers recreation opportunities for a variety of activities, including off-road vehicle riding (ORV), horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, camping and other uses. Tahuya is primarily a destination area for ORV riders.

What’s in a name?

In 1853, the county which surrounded the narrow inlet of Big Skookum (meaning strong water) now known as Hammersley Inlet, was named in honor of the Sa-Heh-Wa-Mish people. Se-Heh-Wa-Mish continued to be the name of the county for ten years until in 1864 the name was changed to Mason County in honor of Charles Mason, acting Governor in the absence of Isaac Stevens. Mason County today is a thriving community with major industrial activities focused on the area’s abundant natural resources, such as timber and shellfish. Shelton is the westernmost city on Puget Sound with a population of over 9,000. Formerly called Sheltonville, Shelton was once served by a small fleet of steamboats which was part of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet. Traveling down Hammersley inlet on the fast moving tidal currents, these ships delivered supplies and mail to the community. Tugboats still ride these tides to deliver wood products and barges of sand throughout Puget Sound. Shelton’s economy was built around logging, farming, dairying and ranching as well as oyster cultivation. To this day, the Simpson Timber Company’s mill on Puget Sound’s Oakland Bay continues to dominate the landscape of the downtown area. Shelton also identifies itself as the “Christmas Tree Capital.”

Puget Sound waters offer a unique family activity:

squid jigging! A sport that requires simple, inexpensive

fishing tackle, recreational squid fishing is available year round. Squid feed mainly at night and are attracted to light, which is why piers and docks are good locations for jigging. Hungry squid lurk in the dark fringes near patches of lighted water and then dart into the bright area in pursuit of food such as young herring and other small fishes. The most common species of squid found in Puget Sound waters is the Pacific squid, averaging around 8”. With a long tapered body and triangular tail fins, these fast-moving, ten-armed mollusks are also known as calamari when prepared as food. In all areas, except Hood Canal (which is currently closed to squid fishery) the current limit is 10 lbs per person, all squid anglers 15 years or older must carry a current Washington fishing license. License details as well as information on fishing, preparing and cooking squid are available at wdfw.wa.gov

Imagine a small picturesque village embracing the shores of North Bay and Case Inlet, teeming with shellfish and boating opportunities. Seat yourself on the patio at Lennard K’s Boat House and enjoy live music, great food and drinks, and “a toast-worthy scene”. Allyn hosts a shopping center, three restaurants, a market, several small shops and waterfront access through docks and boat launches. Allyn Waterfront Park has a gazebo built, and funded by community members, that is used for town celebrations, weddings, concerts and picnics. It is open to the public every day. The community was first settled in 1853 with its first sawmill on Sherwood Creek. The town was named after Judge Frank Allyn of Tacoma. By 1890 Allyn had a post office, school, newspaper, sawmill, two saloons, a hotel and wharf. From the 1870s to the 1920s, transportation needs for Allyn and other communities along Case Inlet were once served by a small flotilla of steamboats. By 1889 steamers made twice-daily round trips from Allyn to Tacoma, Olympia, and Shelton. These “mosquito fleet” boats carried nearly all passengers, mail, and freight to and from the area.

Like most Puget Sound Coastal communities, Allyn engaged in logging, oystering, fishing, and farming. During World War II oysters were not among the many food items rationed and the oyster business thrived in Case Inlet and surrounding areas. West on the town’s main thoroughfare, State Route 3, is the peaceful and serene waterfront community of Grapeview, this is a historical location of the first winery and vineyards of the Pacific Northwest. Grapeview’s Island Belle strain of grapes is still bottled at Hoodsport Winery, near Hoodsport. Many Island Belle vineyards are located on Stretch Island although the original St. Charles and other wineries closed in the 1960s.

The story of the whale at Theler Wetlands, Belfair ............................

“Four and a half years worth of effort have produced one of the finest grey whale skeleton displays in America.” In 1999 a young gray 27’ whale died of unknown causes and washed ashore near Belfair State Park. Volunteers gathered the carcass and buried it so that it may decompose. After two years in the ground the bones were uncovered, numbered and documented and left to “dry.” Two more years, aired, the bones were moved again and on “Whale Wednesdays” volunteers began the long process cleaning the bones. After being cleaned, dried and sealed, latex molds were made of each bone so that replicas could one day, be made for additional studies and display. The bones then were painstakingly reassembled and held together with rods and cables; section by section our whale once again took shape. In 2004 nearly 700 pounds of newly articulated whale skeleton was finally placed on display at the Theler Wetlands. The display is free and can be viewed during open hours. Details visit theler.org.

the goodness at the tip of the canal Nestled in the tip of Hood canal is the town of Belfair, a busy close-knoit community that serves as the hub for the North Mason County. Here visitors will find all the modern conveniences with easy access to the natural wonders of parks and waterways. Be warned – many of the “locals” were once just visitors! Little is recorded about the early origins of the community of Belfair. Early information on the region notes the first post office was established in 1880 and that originally the village was called Clifton, as were several other towns in the state. To avoid confusion, it was renamed in 1925 by Mrs. Murray, the postmaster, who submitted the name Belfair from a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning that she was then reading.

Belfair is also home to The Taste of Hood Canal, an annual event falling on the second Saturday in August. This festival features local artists, foods, a classic car show and is sponsored by the North Mason Rotary Club. In early September, locals, visitors and Scottish clan members enjoty the Hood Canal Highland Celtic Festival.

Located on the Union River, headwaters of the Hood Canal, a branch of Puget Sound, it serves as the commercial center of North Mason County. The population of the surrounding area swells in the summertime as tourists and nature lovers flock to the Canal and the Olympic Peninsula.

Washington State Route 3 is the main road leading into Belfair, from Bremerton and Gorst in the north, and Allyn in the south. Washington State Route 106 also starts at the south end of Belfair, leading toward Union, the next town along the south shore of Hood Canal. Washington State Route 300 begins in Belfair and runs along the north shore of Hood Canal, providing access to Tahuya and Dewatto Bay.

The town has local and chain restaurants along with two major grocery stores (QFC and Safeway), and many small local shops. Several public golf courses and lodging facilities are nearby (see page 32).

Belfair serves as a gateway town for the Hood Canal region, and is the last town with services before visitors reach Tahuya State Forest, famed for its miles of off-road vehicle and mountain biking trails.

The 135 acres of the Hood Canal Theler Wetlands also hosts four miles of barrier-free scenic trails that are open daily, dawn to dusk; viewing platforms, 1768 feet of floating boardwalk and many interpretive kiosks that provide opportunities to experience the variety of wildlife throughout the wetlands. Trails give you access to plants, birds and animals in their natural habitats: forests, wetlands, saltwater & freshwater marshes, swamps, bogs and river estuaries. The park features swimming, 106 wading, shellfish harvesting, over 3,000 feet of freshwater shoreline and 3,700 feet of saltwater shoreline on Hood Canal. Hood Canal was named for Lord Hood by Captain George Vancouver May 13, 1792. It was given the name “Hood’s Channel”. However Vancouver did call it a channel in his journals but wrote ‘canal’ on his charts.

In 1889 logging pioneer John McReavy platted Union City on Hood Canal’s south shore alongside the Native American communities that had gathered where Hood Canal makes its great bend. McCreavy promoted the new Union City as the “Venice of the Pacific.” With the promise of three railroads converging in the “city”, McCreavy organized the construction of a hotel, wharf, sawmill, store, Masonic Lodge and church. However, his financial success ended with the panic of 1893, leaving him only his house. The area later rebounded with Hood Canal resort business developments in the early decades of the 20th century and the Orre Nobles’ Olympus Manor artist colony was established in the 1920s creating a rich heritage of well heeled vacationers and artists. The artists drew creative inspiration from the remarkable landscape and the colony prospered until 1952 when the Olympus Manor burned to the ground. To this day, Union holds the title of the first non-native artist colony in Washington state. Union continues to support a wide variety of arts activities and attractions include working farms, roadside markets, a golf course, marina and public boat launch, and of course, the deep fjord of Hood Canal.

The Union area is a great place to begin your Hood Canal adventure. There is a wide range of lodging, see page 36 for details, from quaint private waterfront cottages - like Cameo Boutique and Pebble Beach - to deluxe resort accommodations with water craft rentals - like Alderbrook Resort and Spa. Likewise, the restaurants in the area offer a wide range of choices, most offering a taste of the local seasonal harvest. The wheel,one of the Seattle’s cable car systems and the dredge buckets, from the regrade of Seattle’s Denny Hill, were brought by boat by Ed Dalby from Seattle in 1924. After it was assembled and mounted, the waterwheel produced electricity for the Dalby home and several other cabins until the 1940’s. Although it no longer provides electricity, the Dalby Water Wheel is still an important symbol of the source of green power in the Pacific Northwest.

Hoodsport The first thing you notice about Hoodsport – after the gorgeous view and quaint seaside ambiance – is the wonderful relaxed and welcoming people who invite you to the place they call home. Hoodsport is located along the Hood Canal, at the intersection of U.S. Route 101 and State Route 119. Nearby Lake Cushman is the gateway to the Staircase area of Olympic National Park. G. Robbins, the first person to settle at Hoodsport, was a ship captain who had been transporting lumber along Hood Canal. Like most settleres to the area, the Robbins family occupied themselves with farming and logging.To this day the legacy continues and Robbins’ descendents operate the Hama Hama Oyster Company. Other settlers soon joined him, forming a small community. Most occupied themselves with farming or logging. The town was officially platted in 1890 by the Mason County Mine and Development Company, which owned manganese mines near Lake Cushman. Prospectors found evidence of copper in the area and over 400 mining claims were filed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nearly all claims failed to yield. Hoodsport is renowned among SCUBA divers as an area of spectaculr underwater life including the Giant Pacific octopus. (See page 12).

The Hoodsport Winery is located about one mile south of town. Other Hoodsport businesses include a grocery store with gas station, a hardware store, four restaurants, an espresso shop, two real estate offices, a dentist, a beauty salon, a marina, and several tourism-oriented gift shops.The Hoodsport branch of the Timberland Regional Library overlooks the town. Here you will also find the Hoodsport Visitor Information Center where you can stop by for a visit, purchase park passes and get helpful free information on where your next adventure should take you!

You will see no staircase at Staircase today. Buit in 1890, when Lt. O’Neil made a trail through theAnnas Skokomish wilderness, the rock bluff across the river from the campground was a major obstacle. Bay To get over it they built a cedar staircase. While this place is always chock-full of reasons to have fun, you’ll find this especially true during the summer months. It’s a time when everyone comes together to share a laugh, sample fresh local cuisine and get swept away by lively local music. There are local festivals and events that embrace everything from dance and music, to geoducks, shrimp and oyster beds. Weather

The weather in the Hood Canal area is extremely variable, from season to season and place to place. Overall, the area has a moderate marine climate with pleasant summers and mild, wet winters. Summers tend to be fair and warm, with high temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees F. July,

August and September are the driest months, with heavier precipitation during the rest of the year.

Visitors should come prepared for a variety of conditions. Layers and rain gear are heartily recommended – year round.

While winters are mild at lower elevation, with temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s, snowfall can be heavy in the mountains, with accumulations of up to 10 feet common.

There’s really no better way to get the lay of the land and soak up the scenery than to travel here and around by road.
