2014 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Whew! It has been a busy summer! From watching the fireworks shows at Alderbrook and in Hoodsport to hanging out on Mason Lake with friends, there truly is no place on earth like the Pacific Northwest.

PRESIDENT

Brian Kelly| Miles Sand & Gravel

Mason County boasts some of the most magnificent views of the Pacific Northwest. We recently had a family reunion at Potlatch State Park. Though I had spent summers there as a child, I’d forgotten how nice it is to sit there in the nice cool breeze on a hot summer day and admire the kayakers and boaters. Something about being on or near the water just makes me feel content. While family was in town, we decide to show them the sights. It was a good reminder for me as well. The spot that always seems to strike me the most is the High Steel Bridge. People always seem to roll their eyes when I tell them about it. “What’s so special about a bridge?!” is likely the thought going through their minds. But it is phenomenal. From 420’ above the river encased by waterfalls, giant trees, and transparent wispy clouds, it has a surreal feel about it. If you haven’t been for some time, do yourself a favor and go visit it again.

As you’ve likely noticed, the summer flower baskets are in full effect throughout the City of Shelton. The Chamber fundraises for these gorgeous baskets through our Beautification committee; we do not receive any funds from the city or the county for this project. I cannot tell you how many people comment on the baskets. “It’s so nice to see that people care in this community” is one of the most common statements that I get. This year, we are very close to our fundraising goal of $18,000. As a matter of fact, we are just $1,000 shy. If you are interested in donating, please give us a call at the Chamber Office. Along the lines of beautifying our city, I’m very excited about the partnership we are entering into with Forterra. Forterra is a northwest company with a strong history of finding the strengths of different communities and placing the spotlight on them. They work to preserve the historical integrity of a town, while helping to place the best foot forward for the future.

PAST PRESIDENT

Melanie Bakala State Farm Insurance

They have worked with communities similar to ours, including the Aberdeen waterfront project, the Quinault Indian Nation Taholah Village Relocation and the Neah Bay walking and biking trails. I’m excited to see us finally have a plan for the future, instead of merely talking about what we are or what we could be. We are partnering with the City of Shelton on this project, and I’m happy to share that they, along with Green Diamond Resource Company, have agreed to match the funds the business community raises toward this effort. We are looking for a wide range of people to participate in this process, so if you are interested, again, just give me a call at the Chamber office. You can also find more information on page 6.

It certainly doesn’t seem like we should be into the month of August already, but time does fly. As I reflect on the months gone by, it seems too soon to think about nominations for the Chamber Board of Trustees. Brian Kelly | Miles Sand & Gravel However, in a few short months, October of each year, nominations for the Chamber Board of Trustees term are announced in accordance with the Chamber’s bylaws. The nomination and selection process is crucial to the Chamber’s future. Our success is largely based upon a strong Board of Trustees who represents an assortment of our member businesses and geographical areas. The board is charged with the strategic direction of the Chamber and provides valuable insight on behalf of our members. As you can see from the list of current board members on page 3, our board has both business owners and general managers from Union, Hoodsport and Shelton. The Chamber Boar isn’t the good old boys club of yesteryear – they are business people who are genuinely interested in Mason County’s future. Their mantra is not, “we’ve always done it this way…” but rather ask the quests, “Why do we do it that way? Is that still the best way to do it? Some nominees are recommended by the Nominating

Committee, while additional nominations will be taken from the floor during the October membership meeting, so long as the nominee is a member in good standing and has given their consent to serve. Board members who will continue into the second of the two-year terms are Kelley Crabtree, Rod Olsen, Jill Himlie and Russ Denney. You can see a list of currently serving board members on page 3. The monthly meeting where nominations may be made from the floor will be held on October 16 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM; additional details will be made available closer to the date. Following this meeting, ballots containing all nominations will be mailed to members in good standing.Newly elected Trustees will be announced at the November 20 membership meeting and formally installed at the Annual Awards Gala held on Friday, January 16, 2015. If you are interested in participating on the Chamber Board and have questions, I’d be happy to share with you my experience. It has definitely surpassed my expectations.

Chamber leads effort to strengthen the downtown core through visioning process Heidi McCutcheon | Shelton-Mason County Chamber Executive Director

How would you describe Shelton? I’ve heard many different descriptions everywhere from burned-out logging town to shellfish capital of the world. With such a range of opinions, it’s hard to imagine what Shelton could be when we “grow up.” In an effort to answer this question, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce plans to work with business owners and the greater community to begin to create a vision for downtown Shelton. Seattle-based Forterra has presented a robust set of activities designed to provide us with a complete downtown vision and a trajectory for improving our downtown business corridor. The proposal features consultation by renowned experts in architecture and walkability as well as Forterra’s experience in bringing together the community, both businesses and residents.

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

I’m happy to tell you that the partnership has begun already with Green Diamond Resource Company agreeing to match funds raised by the community and our businesses. Recently, the City of Shelton also agreed to partner and to provide matching funds as well, acknowleding that the process could yield significant longterm benefits. Specifically, the City cites their interest in maintaining downtown as

6

a strong commercial center as it will likely be challenged by new commercial development in Shelton Hills. The scope of work will include bringing in Dan Burden, a pioneer in walkability planning, and the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute (WLCI) to host a downtown walking audit.

The walking audit will tour downtown, compare existing conditions to best practices and get community input on how to best make improvements. We will also bring in expert planning and design firm, Mithun, to shape the vision and recommendations into a clear and attractive plan for downtown redevelopment. Mithun would co-host a kickoff workshop, lead an opportunity and vision workshop and prepare a Downtown Visioning Plan, including a context diagram, high level urban design and development framework diagram and up to three high-level sketch-type 3D rendered views. When I share this plan with people, one of the questions they ask is why bring in an outside company to tell us what we have? There are several reasons for this. First and foremost, until there is a plan it’s nearly impossible to move forward. Forterra, WLCI, and Mithun have proven track records working with communities similar to ours. Their role is not to tell us what we have, but rather to compile what they learn and build it into a cohesive plan for the future. Another thing that often follows this process is the ability to be attractive recipients for grant funding to build out the plan – having world renowned experts on your side is a good thing! Mason County is an amazing place – we have Kneeland Park, a remarkable place funded by the community. With Olympic College, we also have the first public college in Washington State funded by more private dollars than public dollars. Where there is a need and a plan, Mason County kicks it into high gear and accomplishes incredible feats. The total cost for this process is $54,000 and fundraising will begin immediately. My hope is to complete fundraising by November 2014 and for the project to commence in January 2015. I believe this shared funding strategy will ensure that the project moves forward in a timely fashion, as well as signal toward a mutual interest in a vibrant downtown for the future. If you would like to contribute (either financially or by participating in the visioning process), please call the Chamber office at (360) 426-2021. After all, it takes a village. Or a town like ours.

Chamber Expo draws thousands

For fourteen years, the annual Business Expo & Bite of Mason County has connected Chamber members with the community. On July 17 the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce hosted more than 60 local businesses and restaurants at the Shelton High School Minidome. The event had the feel of a high energy, block party with local businesses and community organizations drawing on showmanship and entertainment to get visitors’ attention while sharing what makes their business so dynamic. “We were thrilled to see such an amazing turnout from the community, especially for the first year in a new location – it’s a wonderful way to discover the services available in Mason County,” says Heidi McCutcheon.

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

I grew up in Mason County. As you can imagine, my family didn’t particularly vacation here. I have many memories of camping at Mason Lake, Twanoh State Park and Potlatch State Park but, as far as vacationing, it’s something I’ve become truly familiar with through my work at the Chamber. The Chamber has ‘run’ tourism promotion for Mason County for the past several years jointly with Stephanie Rowland of the North Mason Chamber. The contract is awarded by the Mason County Commissioners on the recommendation of the Lodging Tax Advisory Council. We’ve made incredible strides in just the past three years. In 2012, our tourism website explorehoodcanal.com had 78,000 hits. This May, I attended the Thurston County tourism summit, where they announced a total of 67,000 hits on visitolympia.com in 2013. I’m proud to share that in 2013, we had 2.5 million hits – 37 times the number that Thurston County received. That is an amazing increase! Year to date, Mason County lodging funds have increased 17% over last year and 2013 was an 11% increase over the prior year. This is a tremendous feat considering that many of the counties along the Olympic Peninsula have seen stagnant or negative growth. Tourism promotion includes a plethora of varied tasks. From designing and updating the website, to developing strategies for a website marketing campaign and utilizing social media to build web presence, especially through sharing local events and maintaining online event calendars. We also revised three commercials with a “Remember Adventure?” campaign targeting families, outdoor adventure seekers and couples/singles wanting to get away from the daily grind. These commercials play in five of Western Washington’s largest movie theaters (Martin Way in Lacey is the closest), in the WA State Ferry Terminals as well as on the ferries themselves, and on Comcast Spotlight’s major networks including Food Network, Discovery, History, and Disney. You can view these commercials on explorehoodcanal.com. 10

We also created a recreation guide which also plays-off the “Remember Adventure?” marketing theme of the commercials and website. The new brochure highlights hikes, walks, beach access and itineraries, while encouraging increased traffic to the site and lodging. For all this, and more, we receive payment of less than $2,500 a month. It goes without saying that staff time alone costs the Chamber more than that number. So why do we do it? There are many reasons, but here are the two main reasons. First is that we need to play a role in maintaining economic development and tourism spending in Mason County – 2013 alone was in excess of $111 million which supported 1,290 local jobs. The second reason is that Chamber members have told me that they believe it is a contract that should remain with a non-profit organization whose goal is to support the community as a whole and understands the needs of local businesses. I meet with a committee comprised of businesses in Hoodsport and Union on a monthly basis who share with me their interaction with the visitors: what visitors like or would they like to see to enhance their stay. Additionally, I have been a member of the Washington Tourism Alliance, the Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission and Culinary Loop – through these partnerships, I remain informed of best practices and what’s working, as well as what is coming up on the horizon. Our Chamber also manages three visitor centers in Mason County, aided by more than 20 people volunteering their personal time to serve an average of 18,000 people annually.

Maple Glen Senior Living staff and residents would like to thank all the community members who have shared their time and talents with us. Anyone interested in volunteer opportunities at Maple Glen, please contact Kimberly Janda, (360) 427-0300. Often times when visitors come to us, they know the experience they long for but not the means. “We want to go hiking” might mean anything from a leisurely stroll on the beach to going deep into the back country. With state lands, the Olympic National Park and the Olympic National Forest there are a number of different passes, maps and information needed. Our volunteers are second to none in delivering the experience visitors desire. Recently, we’ve been under fire for some choices made for tourism promotion. For instance, I don’t believe that the best use of county funds is to advertise on a radio station whose listeners likely live and work locally. Tourism promotion demands that we encourage visitors, lodging and spending from outside of Mason County. I think that to reach out to neighboring counties – specifically those where we already have commercials being aired – makes the most sense for a comprehensive and cohesive marketing strategy to bring visitors and monies into Mason County. I’ve also heard that visitor centers are a thing of the past and that ‘nowadays everyone gets their information online.’

The 18,000 annual visitors we serve indicate that this is not the case. Additionally, in a place where people come to get away, there often times is no cellular service out in the wild blue yonder. Suggestions of creating virtual online ‘visitor centers’ just doesn’t make sense in a region like ours.

I am proud of the impressive growth we’ve worked so hard to achieve. Whether the LTAC committee and Mason County Commissioners award the Chamber this contract again or they decide to award it to another deserving party, I am proud of the role I have played throughout this process.

Lastly, there have been questions raised as to how productive it is for “just two people” to make the marketing decisions. The truth is that while Stephanie and I are responsible for making final decisions, we are far from alone in these efforts. The collective insight of our Boards of Trustees together with local and regional tourism groups helps to guide our decisions and we are privileged to work with a number of talented vendors. We have successfully maximized the impact of tourism dollars with the expertise of graphic designers, video production agencies, and media contacts.

Our businesses directly impacted by tourism (retail, restaurants and lodging) have repeatedly told me that business is up and that part of it is because of our efforts in getting the word out about all the recreation, scenery and entertainment that Mason County offers. It truly is one of the most amazing places on

11

earth.

On Monday, July 14 a Candidate Forum was held at Olympic Middle School and hosted by the Chamber and co-sponsored by the Mason County Journal. The event featured the races for Mason County PUD#3 Commissioner, State Representative (Pos. 1 & Pos. 2), and State Senator, all of which are contested races on the Primary Ballot. Insight to the candidates present came through sharing their position statements, arguing heatedly at times, and answering questions ranging from audits and budgets to minimum wage and income taxes. In addition to questions prepared by the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee and the Mason County Journal, written questions submitted by the approximately 120 people in the audience were also accepted. The evening wrapped up with a rapid response “Lightning Round” for the Legislative Candidates. Nine questions were asked and each candidate was able to indicate simply if he or she supported or opposed an issue by holding up a green “support” card or a red “oppose” card.

These nine questions were: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Celebrate fall with hurling pumpkins & hayrides. The residents of Union bring in the autumn season with a bang – or more specifically – a volley of flying pumpkins! Held in the fields of Hunter Farms, PumpkinFest celebrates the coming of fall with a mixture of the quaint country charm and innovative spark that makes the town of Union so unique.

PumpkinFest celebrates with pumpkin chucking!

www.masonpud3.org

Throughout the celebration, visitors can participate in a number of fun family friendly events including hay mazes and tractor hayrides to Hunter Farms’ scenic pumpkin patch in the foothills of Mason County. Visitors are immediately immersed in the scenery, from the sprawling fields of orange pumpkins to the verdant mural of gold and green in the surrounding hills. Nearby you’ll find that merchants, artisans, and restaurateurs alike come forth with the season’s finest. Shop for seasonal items, take in the expansive panorama of Puget Sound with a glass of vintage wine in hand, catch a performance of talented local musicians, or sample some of the delicious cuisine. PumpkinFest’s month-long event builds up to a grand finale on Halloween weekend; which is slated to includes costume contests, parties, entertainment, tours of a genuine haunted house, and an exciting catapult contest where contestants gather in the fields of Hunter Farms to compete for the title of Union’s masters of pumpkin-launching. The catapult contest, which is one of PumpkinFest’s most unique and definitive events, is open to any high school, nonprofit organization, business, or private group of people. Both catapults and trebuchets – catapult-like devices that use counterweights rather than tension to propel the projectile – are acceptable for entry. Teams in each division will compete for three categories – accuracy, distance, and design – with trial runs available every Saturday of PumpkinFest until the competition. Visit explorehoodcanal.com to find out more.

Consider Assisted Living Kelley Crabtree | Maple Glen Senior Living “To move or not to move?” That is the question… Sooner than you realize, life and circumstances change and it’s time to find the best living option for your life today and tomorrow. don’t have an escape plan that you could manage on your own or you’re no longer able to care for a loved one by yourself.

Assisted living combines housing, support services and health care as needed. It is designed for those who require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing and transportation.

If any of these circumstances apply to you, then assisted living may be a great option. Assisted living will add comfort, convenience and pleasure to your life. It will allow you to relax and enjoy all that life has to offer. However, assisted living communities are not all the same.

It is a good option if you are experiencing any of the following: difficulty navigating stairs; difficulty managing home maintenance; spending a lot of time alone – even with family and friends nearby; not getting regular exercise; or even forgeting to eat or not bothering to cook.

First you will need to determine the services you will need. Next find the community that best fits your service needs and personality. There are many things to consider. Choosing an assisted living community isn’t necessarily an easy task! The adjacent checklist will help ease the process for you when you are visiting and evaluating communities and can help smooth the transition.

You sometimes forget to take your medication, you no longer enjoy hobbies or regular activities, you no longer drive and don’t feel comfortable asking others for transportation, and you’re not comfortable hiring strangers to come into your home to help you. If there were a fire or emergency you

Are you ready for packing lunches, new socks, endless drop offs and pick ups – and the dreaded-by-kids early bedtimes and homework? “Getting a new school year off to a good start can influence children’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically,” states Ted Feinberg, EdD, NCSP, with the National Association of School Physcologists, “even children who are eager to return must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and, for some, pressures.” He further states that parents can help their children manage the change by planning ahead and maintaining a positive attitude. Here are a few ideas to promote a successful school experience.

Before School Starts

Ensure good physical/mental health and schedule doctor and dental checkups early. Review information early – teacher, classes, supplies, buses, forms – not the night before!

Make copies of health forms. They are often good for more than a year and can be used for extracurricular activities. Buy school supplies early for best selection prices and less stress! Shop local and save receipts if you need to return anything. Re-establish bedtime and mealtime routines one week before school starts. Reinforce the benefits of not becoming over tired or overwhelmed by school work and activities. Include pre-bedtime reading. Turn off the TV and encourage quiet games or reading as morning activities instead to ease your child into the learning process. Minimize shopping stress by buying only the essentials. Summer clothes are usually fine during the early fall. Designate a spot for homework and school belongings as well as important notices sent home for you to see.

The First Week

Set alarm clocks and don’t rush! Have older children set their own alarms to get up. Praise them for prompt response. Make sure your child has time to eat breakfast. Review your child’s books. Share enthusiasm and display confidence in your child’s ability to master the content. Encourage your child to be patient, attentive, and positive. Make an effort to reach out to your child’s teacher(s) and professionals at school.

Overcoming Anxiety

Show you care with notes in the lunch box or book bag and share that it is ok to be a little nervous starting something new. Do not overreact if the first days are a little rough. Tell your child that you love them, will think of them during the day. Stay calm and positive and acknowledge anxiety if your child has had a bad experience the previous year. Share your child’s concern with the school and confirm that the problem has been addressed. Reassure your child that you and the school are working together to prevent further issues. Reinforce coping but encourage your child to tell you or the teacher if a problem persists. Maintain open lines of communication. Arrange play dates during the first weeks to help re-establish positive relationships. Volunteer in the classroom, doing so helps your child see that school and family life are linked and that you care about the learning experience. In short, remember to be involved and by eliminating your stress – your child’s stress will be less. For more tips on managing a happy and smooth transition back into school routines, review specific resources at National Association of School Psychologists website, nasponline.org and the Parent Information Center, parentinformationcenter.org.

Summer School district maintenance projects

When summer rolls around it is always an extremely hectic time for school district maintenance. Here are a few projects underway in the Shelton School District. A new composition shingle roof is being put on Oakland Bay Junior High. Moss has been removed from the roofs at Shelton High School and a moss inhibitor applied. The final phases of work on the fastpitch softball field are underway. Infield dirt has been applied and the fencing and backstops will follow.

Contact Miles for all your sand, gravel & concrete needs.

The outfield grass was re-seeded this spring to ensure a strong and healthy turf. By spring the Highclimber softball team expects to play on the field. The rafter tails and beams on the minidome roof are being repaired and treated to fix damage from 42 years of weather and times of low maintenance.

Technology additions for local schools

Nearly 600 Chromebook 2 computers with 13.3 screens will be placed in Shelton schools this summer. This technology will be used to supplement instruction and for online testing during the 2014-2015 school year. Smarter Balanced Assessments will be online starting this school year and replace all other required state assessments. Since school buildings do not have rooms available to add more computer labs these computers will be placed in mobile charging

units that hold 32 computers and can be moved from room to room. Wireless access devices have been located in the schools to ensure accessibility.

Back to school? Shop local for a unique, convenient experience Deidre Eaton | Member Services Director

The end of summer is quickly approaching and soon everyone will go back to his or her normal routine. For Shelton, Sept. 3 marks the beginning of the school year. If you are like most of my friends, you are already gearing up for that first day. There are lists of things that you will need. Here’s the thing: don’t forget to shop local! Update on all-day kindergarten, Year Two As the new school year nears, our district will start the second year of full-day kindergarten at our elementary schools. Teachers report that students performed at least two to three months ahead of groups that only attended half days in the past. All-day kindergarten provides a tremendous academic and social-emotional benefit to children.

360-432-5844 Monday thru Saturday: 11:00 am – 9:00 pm

405 Railroad Ave., Shelton, WA 98584

Students who attend a full day program should continue to perform better academically into the future as well. Be sure to register your child at your neighborhood elementary school in mid-August if she/he will be 5 years old by September 1.
