director’s chair

Did you ever have one of those days when all you can do is just sit back and shake your head? I’m periodically reminded that there are some women in this community who, although we would like to think it doesn’t exist within lesbian relationships, really tend to act like men when things don’t work out. Momentarily, think about that construction worker that stands on the street corner and whistles at a pretty women as she walks by. He then compliments her various body parts in some way, with a smile. He tells her how much he would like to spend some quality time with her. And suddenly, as she walks right on by without giving him a second glance, he completely turns on her and calls her things that would make his mama slap him if she heard. Now, go to another place where a woman leaves her boyfriend and he begs her to forgive him and come back. He tells her he loves her more than his life and is so sorry for every mistake he has ever made. Then suddenly, when she doesn’t come running back, he completely turns on her, threatens to harm every person in her life and then tells her she has an unattractively fat ass. Okay, so that is the kind of behavior I am talking about…but from a woman towards another woman. I’m shaking my head again just thinking about it. Let’s face it, sometimes, no matter how hard we try, relationships just don’t work. Sometimes it’s us. Sometimes it’s them. Most of the time, it truly is both of us. As much as they say there is someone for everyone, not everyone is compatible. One woman’s treasure may surely be another woman’s trash. I’m not saying that break-ups are easy and they should just roll off our backs. But I am saying that there is a big, fat, ugly line between being an adult and being an idiot. It’s not hard to miss. It takes a great deal of pre-meditated effort to actually cross it. I’m not always surprised when I hear tale of women going through this kind of thing with exboyfriends or husbands. But I have to admit it always makes me tilt the terrier head when I hear it coming from a gay woman about her ex-girlfriend. I suppose it’s just that part of me that wants to believe that women are better than those kinds of men, and that gay women are even better. I’m suddenly reminded of the words spoken so eloquently by Miss Latrice Royale, finalist on the current season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, so many times in the past six weeks, “Good God, girl, get a grip!” (Not to be confused with other notable quotes like, “It’s not that serious. Really. You’re a man in a wig.”) But seriously, I know there are some of you who, contrary to what I want to believe, have acted a fool and crossed that big, fat, ugly line when some woman broke up with you. Some of you might even be doing that right now. Well stop it. Take a step back, give yourself a long, hard look in the mirror and ask yourself if this is the kind of woman you really want to be. Ask yourself how you would feel if some guy was doing the same thing to your sister or mother. Then ask yourself if you would counsel your sister or mother to go back to that guy or if you would tell them to run for the hills. Seriously. There’s an old saying that reminds us that the only thing in this world we can ever really control is our own behavior. So, ladies, please let’s govern ourselves accordingly. See you next month.

With the release of her nineteenth album, Slipstream, BONNIE RAITT is starting anew. The album marks her return to studio recording after seven years; it’s coming out as the launch of her own label, Redwing Records; and it delivers some of the most surprising and rewarding music of her remarkable career. The album was recorded with her longtime touring band and top-level musicians. 12 tracks Releases April 10.

Out in limited release on April 13 is the new drama, Woman Thou Art Loosed: On The 7th Day, starring BLAIR UNDERWOOD, SHARON LEAL, NICOLE BEHARIE and PAM GRIER. The Ames’ seem to have built the perfect life until their six year old daughter is kidnapped; over the course of seven days they begin to uncover secrets about their past that could rip their marriage and lives apart.

NORAH JONES has set a May 1 release date for Little Broken Hearts, her stunning new album produced by DANGER MOUSE (aka Brian Burton). Jones has also revealed the album cover and tracks of the 12-song set, which features original songs co-written by Jones and Burton. Little Broken Hearts is the fascinating next step in the artistic evolution of one of the music world’s most consistently intriguing singer-songwriters.

In the Time of Gods, the ninth studio album from beloved singer-songwriter DAR WILLIAMS is due for release on April 17. The new album is among the most evocative of Williams’ career. As Dar explains it, “I’m interested in power right now…” she says, “…I see people who are actually doing things that you always dreamed somebody would do, and I can help make that a reality...”

in the news PRESIDENT OBAMA TO APPEAR AT LGBT FUNDRAISER IN HOLLYWOOD, FL

THE 16TH ANNUAL DAY OF SILENCE, APRIL 20th

If you always wanted a few seconds with President Obama, open up your wallet because this might be your closest chance. The LGBT Leadership Council invites you for an LGBT Campaign Briefing, Reception and Photo op with President Obama in Hollywood, FL. You might have seen the invitation to the event on Facebook or via your email for an LGBT-themed event and photo reception. “The reality is that this type of event isn’t [being] held in every state and its placement in Florida demonstrates how important both Florida and the LGBT community are to the Obama campaign. It is truly a rare opportunity that you should not miss,” notes the invitation. Tickets prices are as follows: $250 and up only includes general reception; $2,500 per person, includes photo & campaign briefing

Every year, more and more students participate in the Day of Silence, which began 13 years ago when University of Virginia students wanted to find a way to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment on campus. Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence at the University of Virginia, to the organizing efforts in over 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in 2008, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach. If you think your rights or someone else’s are not being respected, or want to report your experience of resistant administration, visit dayofsilence.org.

and $10,000 co-host, Includes private briefing by campaign senior staff, list as host & photo with the President. The fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, April 10th at The Westin Diplomat Hotel, 3555 S. Ocean Drive in Hollywood, FL at 3pm. If you wish to donate to the campaign, visit: www.barackobama.com

OUR FUND LAUNCHES SOUTH FLORIDA LGBT COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT SURVEY Our Fund, a community foundation, is conducting a study to better understand the South Florida LGBT community’s needs. The online, anonymous survey is designed to evaluate LGBT issues such as housing, education, discrimination, health, aging, arts/culture and others. The results of the study will be shared by Our Fund and used by the South Florida LGBT non-profit community to address the issues raised, develop programs and to advocate for government and private sector funding. LGBT residents of Palm Beach, Broward and MiamiDade counties are strongly encouraged to participate. Go to www.our-fund.org/survey.

“ALL CHILDREN-ALL FAMILIES” INITIATIVE PROUDLY ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP TO OPEN MORE LOVING HOMES FOR CHILDREN According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 107,000 children in the U.S. foster care system are waiting for permanent homes. The “All Children – All Families” initiative of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation announced a new partnership with RaiseAChild.US, a nonprofit with the mission to promote and encourage the LGBT community to build families of their own through fostering and adoption. The pilot project will produce recruitment events and media campaigns in major cities across the country, raising visibility of LGBT parents and the fostering and adoption process. The initiative provides professional training and technical assistance for implementing inclusive policies and best practices for working with LGBT foster-adoptive parents. “We have over 50 adoption agencies engaged in our ‘All Children—All Families’ initiative,

these are agencies that need and want LGBT individuals and couples to come forward. The RaiseAChild.US campaign will help motivate many people in our community to take that first step knowing that we will connect them to an agency that truly welcomes and values them,” said Ellen Kahn, HRC Family Project Director and a professional social worker. According to 2010 U.S. Census data, children are being raised in over one million LGBTheaded households. RaiseAChild.US Media Director John Ireland explained, “Our families blend into every community, leading to the misperception that gay parenting is something new. Nevertheless, many LGBT people do not realize the fact that multiple private and governmental child welfare agencies are eager to work with us.” More information about the initiative can be found at www.hrc.org/acaf. rich with yoga, groovy drumming, acting and various other endeavors, so it seems to fit. Is Yoga what keeps your body in such great shape?

The most effective way for me to keep in shape is through clean eating. You would be astonished by the amount of veggies I consume! My physical regime is a combo of Yoga, Trapeze, Hiking, Drumming and good sex. (laughs) When I asked around about your sexuality before this interview, the answer I got the most was “Traci is ‘openly herself .’ “ Are we sticking with that today? Girls want to know, you know!

(laughs) Well, that is true. I’ve never been one to scream my sexual preference from the mountain top. (Well, there was that one drunken evening in my early 20’s, but I digress.) I’m representing the B of the LGBT, but I prefer my own self appointed term, Bi-dykling. I am glad you are representing the B in LGBT. Is there a relationship we should celebrate or that you can share with our readers?

Well, thank you! Yes, I have a wonderful woman in my life. We actually celebrated our first year together on April Fool’s Day! Awesome, congratulations then! Was it hard for you coming to terms with having feelings/attraction for a woman?

Born of Syrian and Cherokee descent in Anchorage, Alaska on December 22, 1973, Traci Dinwiddie grew up fascinated by the realm of science fiction and the entertainment industry. With her deepest inspirations stemming from Star Wars, Dinwiddie found a passion in transforming herself into Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, or even Han Solo by reenacting scenes and producing a one-woman show in her home basement. If you don’t already know this dynamic, diverse soul from Supernatural on the CW network, or Elena Undone, one of the hottest (literally!) lesbian movies out there, or taken a yoga class on a Sweet Cruise and found her teaching you the downward dog—then grab a cup of tea, curl up, and feel the warm hug that really is...Traci Dinwiddle.

Thank you! It was very hard to come to terms with my sexuality. I was incredibly confused as a young girl. How does one come to terms with being attracted to both males and females? I didn’t have any healthy role models and felt like I wasn’t completely embraced by the gay community. I’d been out with my parents and sisters since my early 20’s, but rarely spoke publicly about it. More recently, I attended a Sundance LGBT panel interview for my role as a bisexual woman in To.get.her (which won the Audience Choice award in 2011). I was asked about my sexuality and shyly came out to the audience. Afterward, a cute, young boy came up to me and thanked me for being honest. He told me he was also bi and really needed to know others like him. This impacted me tremendously. I think for someone who is public like yourself, it must be twice as hard to come out about your sexuality. Did you feel kind of on the spot at Sundance?

Let’s go over some of the terms used to describe you: actress, Yogini, West African drummer, part time bad-ass and full time fruit cake. Percentage-wise, which fits you best?

Yes, it’s daunting to come out. Honestly, I feel put on the spot every time I’m questioned about my sexuality in interviews. Only since I’ve played a lesbian and a bisexual in films have I been asked about it publicly. I certainly don’t want to hide it, but I also don’t want it stamped on my forehead. There is so much more to me than my sexual orientation. That being said, I do understand that we all need our tribe. I look forward to the days when we can all relax and love who we love.

I dig the “fruit cake” analogy because its consistency is an eclectic mix. My life is

How did you get into acting? What fascinates you about it?

Everything. Each role is a new dance, a painting, a poem- I get to try on gestures, costumes and words. The human spirit fascinates me with its complex vacillation between shadow and light. No one is an angel, and yet, everyone has their own gorgeous radiance about them. It’s like a spiritual treasure hunt for me as I research a character’s essence.

as “The T-Bugs”, are over 12,000 strong and such a loyal, fun, growing group! How has social networking impacted your life and career?

Social media has become a huge part of my life and career. It thrills me to have the ability to share my love for creative living with people all over the world with a single push of a “post” button. Through my FB fan page, Twitter and my personal website (tracidinwiddie.com), I’ve been honored to collectively share births, deaths, weddings (gay and straight), holidays, healings, fitness tips, filmmaking endeavors, travel, triumphs, and heart-felt lessons learned. I’m so proud of my T~bugs! BTW, there is something quite magical about my fan page. It’s no secret that several couples have met and even become engaged on my page. I’ve also had the honor of officiating the wedding of my T~bugs, Mrs. & Mrs. Crespin, who had initially tweeted to me “Get ordained & marry us” on the eve of NY celebrating the legality of same sex marriage. So, I did. You’re about to head up Yoga classes on a “Sweet Cruise” to Cozumel this September. This will be your second Sweet trip. What grabbed your attention about Sweet Travel?

Sweet is an incredible company. It’s the perfect combination of community service work and fun in the sun for women who love women as well as gay-friendly folk. I’m so inspired by Shannon and what she’s

created and can hardly wait for September! On our last trip, I taught yoga classes to one of the wildest bunch of babes. Honestly, their raucous energy reminded me of my days teaching yoga in a women’s prison (in the best of ways)! They’ve got spunk! If you were steering the Sweet ship, where would you take your passengers?

Sweet, let’s kick it in Bali! I’ve wanted to experience that gorgeous place for a long time. Some of my favorite destinations I’ve explored thus far would be Cappadocia, Turkey and the jungles of Panama. Both have this other worldly energy. They are a must visit! You’ve got a few projects underway at the moment, like the modern day fairy tale, Anhedonia and a stop-action animation film by Michael Granberry. What can you tell us about them?

Anhedonia is my first film project as a producer. It was filmed in my adopted home town of Wilmington, NC. This is a story about Anhedonia, the eldest daughter of a rich CEO, who loses her will to live. The CEO engages the townspeople in a contest to win a million dollars if they can inspire her to live again. One of my good friends Dylan Patterson wrote this, and I play the lead, Anhedonia. It’s currently being edited by James Devlin and will be making the festival rounds this fall. Awakened is a sci-fi feature film about a group of insomniacs that join a

sleep study that goes terribly wrong. I play Lula Baker who enjoys her pot more than anything in the world. She was a hoot to play, too. My project with Michael Granberry is one I’m most excited about. Unfortunately, it’s backed by people that want to keep it “hush hush” until it’s released. I can tell you that I am the voice for the leading lady as well as many other “guest” characters. It’s so damn funny and really touches on a lot of today’s topics. Please do keep your eye out for this one! When you are looking for your next project, is there ever a reason not to take a lesbian role? How important is the mainstream work?

I can’t think of a reason not to take a lesbian role on that merit alone; however, taking on any role requires more than just knowing what her sexual preference would be. I’m delighted by diverse characters, and I need variation as an artist. I’m a huge fan of indie films, and yet, I’d be game for another major mainstream project. My biggest goal right now is to land a regular role on a fabulous show. Tis a shame the episodic The L Word is over. Do you ever worry, career-wise, or personally, about being pigeon-holed into lesbian roles?

I worry about being pigeon-holed, period. I’m not afraid of playing a lesbian. In fact, I rather delight in it. We need more lesbian and bi roles out there. We need more stories about lesbian life without all the “coming out” business, in my opinion. Let’s see something about two women struggling about health insurance, marriage, or the well being of their much loved child! Ya hear what I’m screaming? Awakened and Brandt Point are both projects you’ve wrapped recently. When and where can fans see these?

Awakened is in post production for a while, so I suggest all of your readers join my fan page and visit my site for updates! Brandt Pointe is a pilot that is currently being shopped around. It’s a sweet project. It reminds me of Dawson’s Creek (which is actually where I got my start as an actress!).

Free Fall at my theatre company, The Actors’ Gang. Stefan Haves, from Cirque Du Soleil, came to direct our show. Dreya Weber had a fabulous trapeze act in it, and we shared a dressing room during the run. I told her I was intrigued by Trapeze, and she encouraged me to take it on. So I did—with gusto! Aside from acting, are you interested in directing or writing as well?

Yes and yes. I’m writing a few web series now. One is a wacky tale of a woman in the throes of Perimenopause. It’s my comedic homage to all the ladies and their hormones or lack thereof! I’m always reading scripts, hunting for the perfect project with which to debut as a director. With reality TV having such a major impact on “financed, written and produced” work out there, do you think webseries are making their mark in media now?

Absolutely, and I’m on that train right now. As an election year, what are your political views on who our next president should be or you would like to see elected?

How did West African drumming become a part of your life?

I’m still navigating the murky waters of politics. I always try to choose the lesser evil.

I’ve been studying traditional West African drumming for years. A gal pal of mine gave me one of her Ashiko drums, and I’ve been groovin’ ever since.

What’s the best thing about being Traci Dinwiddie?

I’ve heard we can add “the trapeze” to your long list of accomplishments now? What ever would lead you to that?

I was recently in a show called Atomic Holiday

Well, with a silly name like Dinwiddie, I feel like I have extra permission to make ridiculous mistakes! I like being human. It’s working nicely for me. www.tracidinwiddie.com

One Magical Weekend, which has presented two of the premier events during the Gay Orlando weekend, returns this June for the 4th year with a whole new look and a new attitude as it officially opens its doors to the girls! Let’s Go Play, the producers of One Magical Weekend that includes RipTide at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon during GayDays®, have announced that in celebration of last year’s repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, they are donating one free ticket to the first 200 service men and women who purchase tickets. Let’s Go Play is working with OutServe.org, an association of actively-serving LGBT military personnel that launched on July 26, 2010. With almost 5,000 members and 50 chapters worldwide, OutServe works to support a professional network of LGBT military personnel and create an environment of respect in the military with regard to sexual orientation and gender identity. Back for another exciting year behind the turntables at Riptide at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will be international DJ/Producer Randy Bettis. From mega-events of thousands to intimate house parties, DJ/Producer Randy Bettis is among the most sought-after mixmasters in the dance-music industry. A new addition to this year’s Drink around the World and Retro T-Dance at EPCOT© will be one of the most famous Retro Music DJs in existence, DJ Robbie Leslie. One Magical Weekend works closely with Broward House and Hope & Help because we love the tireless work they do on a daily basis for our HIV/AIDS community. This was just an extension of our appreciation to those that have never been honored for fighting the fight…not only for our country’s freedom but also for our individual freedom to love who we love without fear. One Magical Weekend will take place once on May 31 – June 3rd in Orlando, FL with the famous Riptide at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Waterpark party on Friday night, June 1, 8pm-2am. RipTide, the premiere event of One Magical Weekend, is an aquatic spectacle filled with as much splash and spirits revelry one could possibly fathom. Join the girls and their male friends at this 52-acre world class waterpark. On Saturday, June 2nd be part of the sea of red tshirts at the Magic Kingdom. In 1991, the first event took place on only one day and had 3,000 lesbians and gays from central Florida going to area theme parks wearing red shirts to make their presence more visible. As of 2010 approximately 150,000 LGBTs, their families, friends and supporters attended the six-day gathering. On Sunday, June 3rd, visit Drink Around the World and Retro T at Epcot© for the ending gala. Retro T will be at the world famous Around the World at Epcot®, replete with beverages and trappings from a dozen countries, a private Retro T Dance from 5 9:30PM at the Odyssey and a private VIP close-up viewing area of the amazing fireworks... IllumiNations “Reflections of Earth.” More information on all the events and tickets can be purchased on the website www.onemagicalweekend.com

The Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF), celebrating 14 years as one of the top LGBT Film Festivals in the country, has built an international reputation for bringing premiere LGBT films to South Florida. This year’s nine-day Festival will run April 27-May 6, 2012 with screening locations in Miami Beach and Coral Gables. The MGLFF will feature more than 50 films from around the world, including short films, documentaries and feature-length movies that support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. As one of the first LGBT Film Festivals of the calendar year, the MGLFF will be showcasing several films never before screened. The MGLFF kickoff women’s event will take place at Eros Lounge on Saturday, April 21st. “I’m a Celesbian,” a campy night of famous LBT women in film, will be showing sneak previews of some of our women’s line-up. There will be film fest ticket giveaways and more surprises. Cover is $10. Doors open at 10pm. At this year’s opening night reception on Friday, April 27, the MGLFF will be presenting the inaugural Lavender Heart Award to country singer Chely Wright, and the Pat-

rick Angel Award to former board member Mark “MarkyG” Gilbert. The Lavender Heart Award was created by the MGLFF to recognize an LGBT individual in the arts/entertainment industry who has demonstrated extreme acts of courage while promoting the LGBT community in a positive manner. Last year, Wright was one of the first country music stars to publicly come out of the closet. Wright recorded her struggle and journey through intimate video diaries and interviews with family members, her management team and key players in Nashville that made up her documentary, “Wish Me Away.” The Patrick Angel Award is an honor the MGLFF gives each year to someone who has brought a positive impact to art programs in the community and to the MGLFF in particular. MarkyG served on the MGLFF board of directors for seven years, hosted radio shows, is currently heavily involved in local LGBT nonprofit organizations such as the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and acts as the Co-Emcee at the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade each year. The MGLFF will be hosting five special events that include Opening Night, Centerpiece, Works in Progress, Friday Night Spotlight

and Closing Night. The opening and closing night parties will take place at The Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Screenings will be held at the Miami Beach Regal Cinema, Miami Beach Cinematheque, Coral Gables Art Cinema and The Wolfsonian on Miami Beach. Advance tickets are available now online and by phone. If you were to become an activist in the LGBT community, which organization would you choose and why: I’d choose the “It Gets Better Project” because it was created for the youth. Dogs, by nature, are pack animals with a well-defined social order. As you and yours become your dog’s pack, your new dog will look to you, the pack leader, for guidance. Leadership can be established in a firm but friendly manner. You can’t just expect the dog to abide by the rules of the house without the leader teaching them appropriate behavior! Every dog is different. Whether they are hyperactive, laid-back, serious, silly, shy or bold, training is necessary for all dogs and beneficial to your whole family. Training will: •Help correct negative behaviors such as jumping, digging, barking and chewing, while providing positive activities for your dog. •Deepen the bond between you and your dog, and increase the enjoyment of your relationship with your dog. •Ensure your dog’s safety and happiness. •Nurture good canine companionship for the benefit of your family, neighborhood and community. •Allow you to enjoy the fun and excitement in many activities. If you are just starting out with training, regardless of your dog’s age, you don’t have to go it alone. Sometimes, being in a group setting, with a professional trainer can be more beneficial and be more affordable than you think. In addition, spending a few bucks on training can cost far less that replacing damaged items in your home or paying vet bills for injuries caused from an untrained dog running amok. Check around locally for some group training classes in your area.

•Puppy Class - A developmental training course for the 3-to-5month-old puppy. A puppy class emphasizes socialization with people and other puppies. Instructors usually offer information on growth, nutrition, grooming, housebreaking and problem-solving and teach basic household commands. •Basic Class - A basic training course for dogs 5-to-6 months and older, aimed at training you to train your dog. The basic class emphasizes the essential training commands needed to make a dog a good companion: heel on a loose leash, sit, stand, down, stay in position, and come when called. Instructors also usually provide information on nutrition, grooming and problem-solving. This basic training is important in keeping your dog safe. •Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Class - May be a separate class or a part of a beginner class. CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs that have good manners at home and in the community. Your dog will need to know the commands and exercises taught in a basic training class to qualify for a passing score on the CGC test. Dogs that pass the CGC test receive a certificate from the AKC and are recorded in the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Archive.

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE CENTER YOU RECENTLY OPENED, LIKEME LIGHTHOUSE. WAS THE CENTER THE OBVIOUS NEXT STEP AFTER THE BOOK, LIKE ME, AND DOCUMENTARY, WISH ME AWAY? The LikeMe Lighthouse has been in the works for about 18 months and it’s really been amazing to get it to the point of opening the doors. In many ways, the work has just begun, but we do feel a sense of accomplishment to know that we have been able to see this idea come to life. Once I came out (in May 2012), I began to realize the importance of community and connectivity and that’s what the LikeMe Lighthouse strives to do for the Kansas City area. It’s pretty exciting. BY THE WAY, HOW IS MARRIED LIFE TREATING YOU? Married life is great. We’re having fun–continuing to learn and grow as a couple and planning (as best we can) for forever. WHAT IS THE IDEA BEHIND LIKEME AND WHAT EMPTY SPACES DO YOU WISH FOR IT TO FILL WITHIN THE LGBT COMMUNITY IN KANSAS? LikeMe, the non-profit which oversees the Lighthouse, was founded due to many experiences I was having while out on my book (Like Me) and record tour. I just kept meeting so many people who said, “I had no idea you were ‘LikeMe’” or “I go to school in a small town and there’s no one else ‘LikeMe’”. I just knew that there was something more that I needed to do and I felt compelled to start the non-profit. WHAT ROLE WILL YOU PLAY IN THE DAY TO DAY HAPPENINGS OF LIKEME LIGHTHOUSE? I’m as involved as I can be from NYC. The day to day functions of the LikeMe Lighthouse are accomplished by our Director of Operations and our Local Advisory Board. It is important to mention that there are dozens of volunteers who are an integral part of the day to day activities as well. YOU’RE BEING HONORED BY THE MGLFF IN APRIL WITH THE LAVENDER HEART AWARD. HOW DIFFERENT IS THIS AWARD VS ONE FROM THE ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC OR THE KANSAS MUSIC HALL OF FAME ? I’m really humbled to be receiving The Lavender Heart Award and I must say that being recognized for doing something that so many people in the world do (coming out, living authentically and doing community service work), yet never receive an award... well, it just doesn’t feel right. That said, I feel lucky to be able to use my voice for positive change in the community in any capacity. There’s a bit of a difference in how I feel about being given The Lavender Heart Award and a music award, but not that much– you see, music and my emotional self are so connected and I feel like my being out is all about my emotional self. I do finally feel like I’m letting my heart shine... and that’s why this award is a little extra special.

DID YOU

ABOUT...

She Mag & She Magazine: WHAT ARE your thoughts on the Pre-Abortion Ultrasound Bill signed by Virgina Governor last week? The bill will force all women considering abortions to get ultrasounds and require their doctors to ask if they’d like a picture. Right now, New Hampshire, Florida, Arizona, Ohio, and many other states are considering similar legislation. Hilary G: Horrible attack on women’s rights Jennifer M: For most women it’s a hard decision to begin with, doesn’t need to be made harder. For the few who use it as birth control (yeah, I know a couple) they couldn’t care less anyway so it won’t have the desired effect on them. And honestly the few kids these women did keep are not taken care of properly. Instead of this solution maybe we should just consider sterilizing certain people for humanity sake. Carolyn J: Makes me sick! Kim E: People behind such legislation are not doing so to attack women. If they’re able to pass legislation, then they’re doing so as a majority, women and men alike. They’re passionate in their core belief, and if we’re honest I think we just might admit they’re right. This whole debate sucks. There are no easy answers. Jeannie J: Sounds like illegal search and seizure to me. Where will gov’t invade our bodies next? Candace L: I think it’s interesting that men want to force women to put a medical instrument in their vagina, what’s that all about? I have an idea to force men into rectal exams before any, any sexual contact... Vanessa M: Ridiculous. Forcing this on woman is wrong. What if the woman getting the ultrasound is a rape victim? Or a young girl? Who, may I add, I’m sure did not single handedly make the decision that lead to conception. Yet women have to be put thru this “feel guilty yet?” It’s wrong. Nikki O: This is crazy. Just more torture and pain added towards women. After all, it is women’s history month, haven’t women been fighting towards women’s rights and independent choices without shame or guilt...Shame on you states that add it into legislation. If women are forced into this then the father should be too, in the room with her of course. Sheri K: Yet again, women are forced to defend their decisions with their body and pay for it with their peace of mind. It’s just HORRIBLE that a female has to endure this at a single most nerve wracking time in her life and be forced to pay for a decision that she CHOSE would better her life(for whatever reason)... I can’t imagine its outcome....

Actualmente, seis estados ofrecen licencias matrimoniales a parejas del mismo sexo: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York y Vermont.

96 Hours by Georgia Beers—Georgia Beers has given us another sweet novel about lesbian romance, this time set against the lifealtering backdrop of 9/11. Businesswoman Erica Ryan meets free spirit Abby Hayes when their flight is rerouted to Canada on September 11. In the aftermath of the attack, the two women spend 96 hours together in a kind aid worker’s home, and are shocked to find themselves falling in love. 96 Hours is a great, curl-up-on-thecouch tale of love and change.

Jack Holmes and His Friend by Edmund White— Edmund White’s latest, Jack Holmes and His Friend, follows the 1960s friendship of Will, a straight man, and the titular Jack Holmes, a man grabbling with his homosexuality. As the years pass, the two explore their different sexualities – Will, with women other than his wife; Jack, with men, even as he hides his feelings for Will. White’s prose is light and moving, a modern tale of love, friendship, and the complexities of unrequited love.

You’ll have the opportunity to write your own script. Even if it’s an autobiographical account, you get tocreate yourself the way you want to be. No matter how fantastic the premise, there are ways to pair fantasy with reality, the fiction of what could be possible, with the facts of making that possible. Don’t feel frustrated or stuck. Instead change what you can, yourself.

You’ve got a serious case of wander-lust and your bags are already packed. No worries, You’ll have a great time whether you travel near or far. You’ll need to stay flexible though, and remember to just go with the flow. No matter where that may take you. Enjoy the ride. Be sure to pack a good book, snackage and lots of patience. Nerves are frayed from all the Retrogrades, so stay calm.

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 The confusing twists and turns, and turmoil of your life has had you at the mercy of your emotions, and this month you get a little break from all the drama. A little romantic-comedy-adventure is just the thing to lighten your load, not to mention your mood. Celebrate the return of your happy self, throw yourself a party, and tour the neighborhood socializing. Stop worrying about the money, Be happy.

You’re energized and ready to hit the floor running after all that blocked energy of the recent past. You’ve been spending your time reviewing your goals and strategies, and making plans to implement them. Your focus is on you and your needs and wants. However, you need to remember that the significant others in your life expect equal attention. Don’t engage in power struggles.

Your focus is on improving communications within relationships and on exploring all of the opportunities and possibilities available to you. You’ll be traveling from here to there, dropping in on this one and that one, and enjoying being out and about with your friends and family. You’ll have to balance what you want and need to do, with what your significant others might want and need from you.

You’re torn between what you need to do and what you want to, and with being alone for a moment to catch your breath and regroup. Changes are hard for you to embrace. However, you really do recognize that you simply cannot keep doing what isn’t working, so put your bullish attitude to work clearing the way for those changes to happen.

The planets have conspired against harmony and understanding within all of your relationships, both professional and personal. Your frustration has boiled over and made many a mess. You are learning the hard lesson that the ONLY thing you have any control over is yourself and with Pluto going Retrograde till Sept and Saturn still out till June, you have to stop giving yourself permission to explode.

Your self-imposed R & R is over and you’re more than ready to go out and party with your friends. You’re full of energy and ideas on how to increase your cash flow, and your communication skills have never been sharper. Take advantage by networking yourself, your skills, and your services. Use your charm and personality to convince others to follow where you lead, and don’t get all moody if some need more convincing.

You’re going to get your ‘flirt’ on, big time, and the good news is there will be lots of people to flirt with. Take advantage of any/and all social invitations in order to expand your opportunities as well as possibilities. Nothing’s written in stone and you get to change as needed, or wanted, and enjoy going with the flow. Stalled projects pick up where you left off, with an even better plan to achieve your goal.

Trust your intuition now, activate your common sense, and avoid angry confrontations. Instead, strive to be your best self, focus on your career interests, and on both professional and self-improvement. Make a realistic budget and stick to it. The planets are challenging you to stay calm and in control, even in the midst of misunderstandings. Take some much needed time-out to rejuvenate and re-invent yourself.

You’ve been working hard on all facets of your life. Your career, of course, is always uppermost on your mind. You’ve also been thinking about your finances, your love-life, and, most importantly, on positive changes within yourself. Self-analysis and self-awareness is the key to bringing closure to the past, and to fully enjoy the gift of the present, with opportunities to create a happy and successful future.

You’ve got a topsy-turvy month ahead, with both your emotions, and your finances see-sawing wildly. By mid-month communications improve with significant others. Try to find common ground and goals. Try to understand and respect others’ points of view. Remember that the only thing you have any control over is your own reaction, so don’t do unto others, if you don’t want to get undone.
