...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Let me start by saying that what I am going to tell you is something that, at first, you might think was better suited for last month’s issue. But if you stick with me for a few minutes, you’ll realize why I am telling you about this now instead. The first time I met Beverly McClellan was about 15 years ago, in my wild days. It was back in the glory days of South Florida’s lesbian bar called The Otherside. I had been working for a lesbian magazine for a while and it was the best place in town for a single gal to start her evening out. Like I said, these were my wild days. I was a young thirty years old and was really only interested in partying and playing the field as much as possible. Now Bev, she was a wild one as well. In many cases, she seemed almost larger than life to me. She was very talented, but since her wild side tended to seep into drama, we weren’t much more than acquaintances with a mutual friend or two. I was more of a silent observer in the background. As the years went by, I saw Bev here and there at events. I loved her as a musician, but shied away from the dramatic parts of her life. And then, I saw her audition for The Voice. Admittedly, as the weeks went by, I became glued to the TV for every episode, especially the ones when Bev was on. Of course, each time I was blown away by her voice and stage presence, just like so many others across the country. My gut told me from day one that she would get far in the competition and, because of my knowledge of the history of her home base of J’s Bar, I immediately and continually appreciated the irony of her being on team Christina. But something very interesting happened the week that it was down to Bev vs. Frenchie Davis and stuck with me right on through the final winner was announced. This Bev was not the Bev I met 15 years ago and had seen through the years. This was a new Bev. This was a Bev that had grown and blossomed, not only in talent but also in courage, wisdom and spirit. It takes a huge amount of courage and self-love to be willing to get on a stage in front of millions of people—whose job is to be your judge—being openly gay, larger than life, bald headed, tattoo covered, wearing stunning men’s clothing and basically saying, “This is me and I am not going to be anyone else just to make you like me.” Not only did she win people over with her massive talent, but for many, including me, she blew people away with her heart, larger than life personality and grace. And in those final moments, when she cheered out loud as they announced Dia Frampton’s name with Javier instead of hers, she brought tears to my eyes. It takes a really big person to be that thrilled for someone else’s success under those circumstances. For me, in that moment, Bev had won it all. For me, Bev achieved something far greater than anyone else on that stage. That final night, tears rolled down my cheeks as I thought about the countless people— gay, straight, old and young—whose lives she will have changed with her courage and grace. Title or not, I know Beverly McClellan will be filling stadiums and topping charts. My hat is off to Ms. McClellan. I may have met the wild girl, but I am truly proud to have watched her represent this community as the remarkably incredible woman she has become. You don’t need to have the title of “The Voice,” to succeed when you have achieved the title of “The Inspiration.” See you next month!

Opening in limited release on July 15 is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, A two-tiered story set in present-day Shanghai and 19th century China. As longtime friends Nina and Sophia balance careers, husbands, and families, they look to the past to understand their ancestral connection as evidenced by the story of Snow Flower and Lily, a pair of sevenyear-old girls who are matched as laotong — or “old sames,” friends who are closer than husband and wife and are bound together for eternity. Stars Bingbing Li, Gianna Jun and Vivian Wu.

Pictures need to be hi-resolution. For more information, please contact info@fomofilms.com.

Melinda Gordon, is a woman born with the gift of being able to see and speak with the dead. While there was a bit of a running storyline in the background, each episode holds its own, as Melinda uses her gift to help spirits settle their issues here and crossover into the light. While you can’t see new episodes, the entire series is available on DVD as well as playing in order daily on Syfi Network.

The married lesbian duo of Sugarbeach, has released two chart topping albums and have won three Pride in Arts awards. Then at 10pm is the return of Rizzoli & Isles, based on the novels by Tess Gerritsen, starring Angie Harmon, as police detective Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander as medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles.

DATA AND METHODOLOGY: Data are compiled from PCT 15 (Husbandwife and unmarried-partner households), Census 2010 SF-1. Same-sex couples are identified in households where Person 1 describes his or her relationship with another adult of the same sex as either a “husband/ wife” or “unmarried partner”. The reported number of same-sex couples in the state and the associated figure for same-sex couples per 1,000 households are based on official Census tabulations. ADJUSTED DATA: All other data used in the report are adjusted figures and do not represent official Census Bureau tabulations. The adjustment procedure accounts for the likelihood that a small portion of different-sex SHE -

married couples miscode the sex of a spouse and are incorrectly counted as a same-sex couple. It also takes into account the possibility that some same-sex couples may not be counted in Census tabulations due to concerns about confidentiality or because neither partner was Person 1 in the household. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Gary J. Gates, PhD is the Williams Distinguished Scholar at the Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law. Abigail M. Cooke is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at UCLA and is affiliated with the California Center for Population Research.

You probably need a vacation – most Americans do. But what kind? Staycation? You know you’ll end up watching reruns and cleaning the garage. Family trip with your “black socks and man sandals” brother-inlaw? Yeah, we’re not convinced either. Fabulous lesbian cruise or allwoman, all-inclusive resort vacation? Now we’re getting somewhere. If you’ve ever heard the words “lesbian” and “vacation” together, you’ve probably heard of Olivia. In the last 21 years, Olivia has taken over 100,000 lesbians on vacation, and along the way, they’ve made a lot of lesbians very, very happy. 98% of their travelers leave grinning and vow to return. (We heard the other 2% simply refuse to leave.) Part of the off-the-charts happiness is because Olivia always charters the whole ship or buys out the whole resort so Olivia guests are the only guests. This means you can be out and free every minute of the day. You’re not part of a small group on a huge straight cruise. You’re not crowded into the “lesbian-friendly corner” of the resort pool. Olivia knows that even if you down the entire mini-bar contents, you won’t have fun if the family in the next room spends the week screaming nonstop at their kids, or the frat boys in the cabin above you are entertaining every night. Why share your precious vacation with them? On an Olivia vacation, every night is “Ladies’ Night”—It’s your vacation, and Olivia knows it should be your ship or your resort. An Olivia vacation is one of the only times you’ll be in the majority for a whole week, and what a week it is! Olivia creates a little slice of paradise—and they start by bringing their own staff and entertainment. That’s right, Olivia makes those cheesy SHE -

magic acts you find on standard cruises disappear. Instead, you’ll enjoy comedians like Kate Clinton and Julie Goldman, who you can catch on Olivia’s January 2012 Western Caribbean Cruise out of Tampa, FL. On an Olivia vacation, you’ll see up-and-coming lesbian singers and meet filmmakers, actresses, authors, top chefs and more. Most of the entertainers and special guests are onboard or at the resort all week— they call bingo, MC the all-female Oldywed/Newlywed Game, or encourage you to belly flop into a pool of lesbians during the wet-n-wacky pool games. Sounds better than the “Hairiest Back on the Lido Deck” contest, doesn’t it? Dislike being on a boat? Try an all-inclusive resort. Love Europe? Take an upscale riverboat cruise. Feel the urge to meet a blue-footed boobie? Check out the Galápagos adventure. From spas to scuba diving, from Alaska to Tahiti, there’s an Olivia trip for every stripe of the rainbow. But, you say, what if the trip doesn’t have my type of lesbian? The last Olivia cruise was filled with 1,800 lesbians aged 21 to 93. It’s not all cargo shorts and Crocs, nor is it all pinstripes and pinup girls, though you’ll see a bit of both. Rock your mohawk or your mullet – everyone is welcome. Plus, Olivia’s diversity program—Olivia’s Sisters at Sea & Sisters at Play—provides a great way for African American, Latina, Asian and other women of color to meet, mingle and enjoy special programming. The diversity might just end up being your favorite part of the trip. With anywhere from 50 to 2,000 women per Olivia trip, you are sure to make new friends. Couples can reconnect with a commitment ceremony, couples’ spa treatments and romantic sunset sails. They don’t call it “The Lesbian Love Boat” for nothing! Single travelers are warmly

welcomed into the Solos Program, which is filled with hundreds of women mixing, mingling, and spending the day together snorkeling or seeing the sights. Olivia’s Solos Coordinators are there to make sure all you single women have your best vacation ever. Like to do good in the world? Olivia has been giving back wherever they go for over 21 years. Their Costa Rica travelers raised enough money to spay or neuter 140 animals in Playa De Coco and donated 14 huge bags of school supplies to local schools. Whether it’s bringing binoculars and birding supplies to an indigenous women’s project in Baja or year-round partnerships with organizations like NCLR, GLAAD, and HRC, warmth and generosity are the norm. And who doesn’t like to be around warm, generous people?

Curious about Olivia’s magical, fun, relaxing and romantic vacations? HOP ONBOARD THEIR WESTERN CARIBBEAN CRUISE (JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 5, 2012) DEPARTING OUT OF TAMPA, FL. You’ll experience a week of freedom surrounded by 1,300 lesbians, with entertainment including Kate Clinton, Vickie Shaw, Julie Goldman, and Gina Yashere. Showtime’s The Real L Word… you either love it or hate it. The new cast (Whitney, Claire, Romi, Francine, Sajdah, Cori & Kacy)… you either love them or hate them. Now in its second season, TRLW brings a new group of girls living in Los Angeles, along with season one’s unforgettable Whitney and Romi (Whitney’s sort of ex-girlfriend), in what seems to be a more dynamic season, with more real issues for lesbian couples like looking for a sperm donor, financial issues, ex-ex girlfriends, nudity and plenty of drama! We spoke to some of the new cast mem-

bers prior to the show’s premiere last June 5th. Right after the first episode the viewers were quick with their opinions on the social networks. If you don’t have Showtime, don’t worry, the DVD will come out towards the end of the year and you will catch up. For now, get to know some of the new girls on the block. CORI & KACY Cori and Kacy have been together for five years, legally married for two, and are now ready to start a family. It’s an emotional journey without a roadmap.

YOU GIRLS ARE DEFINITELY PEOPLE’S FAVORITE AND MINE TOO. IS WANTING A BABY SOMETHING THAT CAME UP RECENTLY OR YOU HAVE BEEN PLANNING IT FOR A WHILE?

Kacy: Well, first I’d like to say thank you. Cori and I have been married for coming up on three years, and starting a family was always a planned next step. We knew we wanted kids and had discussed it very early on in our relationship. Last year we sat down, looked at our life and tried to determine if we were ready. We wanted to enjoy our kids while we were younger and had more time and energy.

Cori: Family has always been very important to us. Figuring out the who, the when and the how required a lot of planning and it was a bit overwhelming at times. I am thankful for the show. It really forced us to face all of our fears head-on. It helped us realize that we really were ready and all of our fears were completely normal. Kacy and I have spent the last five years building a solid, loving, healthy relationship. Together we have helped build each other to become the best individuals we can be and are now really in a place where we are ready to join forces to be the best parents we can be.

YOU ARE BOTH ENTERTAINMENT EXECUTIVES, AS YOUR BIO READS. WHAT EXACTLY DOES THAT MEAN. WHAT DO YOU DO?

Kacy: I have worked in the Home Entertainment industry in Worldwide Marketing Production for the last four years. I oversee the production of Home Entertainment products distributed by my company. It’s like air traffic control - moving pieces around to make sure everything gets where it needs to go. I have recently made the switch to marketing, which is a larger scope, but I still oversee and manage moving pieces.

WHERE DID YOU GET MARRIED?

IS WORKING IN THE SAME FIELD A BENEFIT FOR THE RELATIONSHIP, OR NOT?

Kacy: The first time we got married, we had a tiny ceremony at the LAX Courthouse. We got engaged after two years of dating and a month later, they lifted the ban on gay marriage. I am so grateful we [got married].

Kacy: Working in the same field is hit or miss for a relationship. We initially started out in totally different worlds. But once we both settled into similar positions, it was a new world of nights and weekends to-

gether. It was like rediscovering each other all over again. BEING IN A SOLID 5-YEAR RELATIONSHIP, WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE OTHER GIRLS’ EX-GIRLFRIEND & EX-EX-GIRLFRIEND ORDEALS?

Kacy: After five years, it’s hard for me to remember being with anyone else. I mean, I can remember the person and perhaps some negative emotions, but the reality is, my life truly began when I met Cori. Cori: I can completely relate to the girlfriend drama some of the other girls are going through. We have all been there. If I would have had cameras following me seven years ago, mine would be a completely different story then what it is now. DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING NEW ABOUT YOURSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS & AS A COUPLE FROM DOING THE SHOW?

Kacy: We learned that sex shops are not the place to look for female-centric pregnancy aids! Mainly, that all of the things we thought about our relationship are true - we are strong and our commitment to each other runs very deep. We have had some really tough times caught on camera, but we always turn to each other for strength and support. Cori: I learned that I am a lot more open than I thought. I thought I would have a harder time opening up and letting people in. As a couple, the show brought us even closer. A few people warned us that the show might be hard on our relationship. It was exactly the opposite. It strengthened our relationship. WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST DECISION TO MAKE SO FAR WHEN IT COMES TO THE BABY AND WOULD YOU CONSIDER ADOPTION?

Kacy: The hardest decision is always where to get the sperm. Lesbians need this to make a baby. It had to come from somewhere. Adoption is always a question that comes up, but what most people don’t realize is that there is no way around it. I will have to adopt my children legally because I will not be their birth mother. It just seems so odd that people would even bring up the idea of adoption when Cori is not infertile. It’s not like that is the only option, and it’s not like Gay adoption is easy, straightforward, cheaper, or comes with any less difficultly than

trying to make a child of our own. Straight couples are not deemed selfish for wanting to have children of their own, and when straight couples are trying to get pregnant, people don’t automatically throw out the idea of adoption in the same time period. Cori: In the beginning the hardest part was deciding whether to use an anonymous donor or a friend. We struggled with that for a long time and we were both on opposite sides of the fence. I will definitely consider adoption in the future. I would love to adopt our second child. But I also have the desire to experience the miracle of birth myself. It hurts a bit to hear that I am selfish for wanting this life experience. SINCE YOU ARE LOOKING TO START A FAMILY, WHAT’S YOU TAKE ON A COUPLE OF CATHOLIC DIOCESES IN ILLINOIS ENDING THEIR ADOPTION AND FOSTER-CARE PROGRAMS JUST BECAUSE A NEW LAW IN THAT STATE WILL REQUIRE FOR THEM TO PLACE CHILDREN WITH GAY AND UNMARRIED COUPLES?

Kacy: It’s no secret that I was raised Catholic, and still appreciate some of the traditions that were passed down to me. There are some really beautiful practices there, but on a whole, most Christian-based religions have an aversion to sexuality - hetero or homo. They see the sin in bodies, and they condemn - at will - any transgressor. If you were to ask me to be blunt, I would say that the dioceses that have suspended their programs have done a major disservice to those children - because they assume a very narrow viewpoint of what love is or can be. Because at the end of the day, they are not dispelling homosexuality, nor are they encouraging straight couples to engage in traditional bonds of marriage. They are denying love. SAJDAH She’s new to LA as well, having just moved from Washington D.C. Articulate and opinionated, Saj isn’t shy about making friends or speaking out on behalf of the gay community through activist work. YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONALITY AND ARE ADORABLE. I AM GLAD TO SEE THE AFRICANAMERICAN GAY WOMEN BEING REPRE-

SENTED ON THE SHOW. WHAT WAS YOUR AUDITIONING PROCESS LIKE?

There was actually a young woman that I was interested in, and while she was less into me than I desired, she was a huge fan of the show. So in order to gain more of her attention, I submitted an email to the casting directors expressing my interest. It opened with something like, “If Ellen and P. Diddy somehow had a daughter, that Kanye West babysat, I would be her! Saj Golde...what’s a rainbow without Golde!” Cheesy. I know. But they bought it! (laughs) I UNDERSTAND YOU CAME OUT ABOUT A YEAR AGO, OR AS YOUR BIO SAYS YOU “RECENTLY WENT BUTCH.” HOW WAS THE COMING OUT PROCESS FOR YOU?

Wow. Actually. I developed a crush on a girl so we started hanging out and I quickly realized that what I felt for her was much different than what I had ever felt for any guy. The next day, I was calling my mom to tell her I was taking a girl out to dinner. IT IS NICE TO SEE THE RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE WITH YOUR MOM, WAS IT ALWAYS THAT GREAT THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO SPEAK TO HER ABOUT WHEN YOU GO ON DATES, ETC.?

Yes! My mother is my very best friend! I can, and have always been able to talk to her about everything! Now, my original conversations about women weren’t initially comfortable, but they happened just slower than most. BESIDES THE OBVIOUS REASONS, WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ACTIVIST AND FIGHT FOR GAY MARRIAGE?

For the most part, it was because I woke up one day and realized that I didn’t have a right that I once had! Being a woman of African decent, my rights have been decided at least twice before now. This was my opportunity to fight for myself! I DO SEE YOU AS A FUTURE LGBT COMMUNITY LEADER. WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR YOURSELF IF YOU STAY AN ACTIVIST?

The possibilities are endless! I’ve always wanted to be a catalyst in my community, leave the world a better place than I found it! As for LGBT concerns specifically, we’ll just have to see. Two years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you that I would be doing what I’m doing today. WE MUST TALK ABOUT CHANEL, WHO IS SIM-

and yet a very common problem in relationships, gay or straight. WE DEFINITELY CANNOT LEAVE OUT KELSEY RAISING THE RED FLAG ABOUT THE SEX. HOW ARE YOU HANDLING THAT?

Kelsey and I used to not be able to keep our hands off of each other. We were passionate and in love. I’m not some cold bitch who does not want to give my girlfriend sex. I was tired from working so much and I was filming the show and trying to please so many people including Kelsey. I was tired all the time and so annoyed that she would spend so much time telling me how she needed sex. No one wants to give someone sex who is begging for it. It’s not attractive. I felt like I had to. Maybe I needed a friend at the time and not a girlfriend? ANOTHER ASPECT THAT GRABBED ME WAS THE FACT THAT YOUR GIRLFRIEND, AS SHE PUT IT, IS “NEEDY” AND PROFESSIONALLY YOU ARE PLY GORGEOUS. IT WAS NICE TO SEE HER BE A PART OF YOUR ACTIVISM. HOW IS THE RELATIONSHIP GOING?

Chanel is a beautiful human being, both inside and out! As for the relationship, it’s a relationship, so it has its ups and downs. You’re gonna have to tune in and ride the coaster as I do!

has helped Romi manage life in the past but it’s become a toxic medicine. I AM GLAD PRODUCERS DECIDED TO BRING

WERE YOU BOTH ALWAYS SO COMFORTABLE

YOU BACK, NOT ONLY TO SEE THAT YOU ARE OVER WHITNEY BUT YOU HAVE OTHER STORIES TO TELL. LOVE SEEING YOUR MOM AS PART OF THE SHOW AND YOUR RELATION-

ABOUT BEING OPEN ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP ON THE SHOW?

SHIP WITH HER. WAS IT PLANNED FOR HER TO BE IN THE SHOW?

(laughs) Imagine all the awkwardness of meeting someone new and getting to know them while simultaneously allowing the world to get to know you. Just writing that was uncomfortable!

I was excited to be asked back to the show and get the chance to share a little bit more of my life. I have so many more stories to tell other than being someone’s girlfriend. My mom is a huge a part of my life and I was so happy when she agreed to share our life with the show. When Showtime decided to film my life, I had to have her in it because she is my life.

THIS SEASON SEEMS MORE DYNAMIC AND YES, THERE ARE THE SEX SCENES AND NUDITY. DO YOU FEEL THEY WERE NECESSARY AND WHY DID YOU AGREE TO HAVING YOURS AS PART OF THE SHOW.

Sex is a part of life and therefore a part of lesbian life, but there’s more to my life and story than what happens in my bedroom. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEXT?

Currently, I am working on a hip-hop inspired marriage equality campaign in hopes of gaining more support for same-sex couples from communities of color. This is sort of my passion project, so it’s slow moving but ultimately will contribute to an overall goal of reducing antiLGBT prejudice everywhere! ROMI Romi made a strong impression during season one and is back with her almost one-year relationship with Kelsey. A social butterfly, alcohol

AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE ONLY SEEN TWO EPISODES OF THE SHOW. ONE SIDE OF YOUR STORY I FEEL READERS WILL IDENTIFY WITH YOU IS THE FINANCIAL SITUATION WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND. ASSUMING YOU GIRLS ARE STILL TOGETHER AFTER FILMING, HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH THAT?

I wish that money was never an issue but unfortunately it can put a lot of stress on a relationship. I was the one making the money and taking care of us in the relationship. Kelsey had part-time jobs and could take care of herself a little but most of the responsibility is on me. It’s hard. I love her and I want to make it work but I need some help. I’m working like a maniac and all she wants to do is ask for sex. I was beat and started resenting her in ways. I know it is sad

GOING AFTER WHAT YOU WANT AND THAT TAKES A LOT OF YOUR TIME. HAS KELSEY BEEN SUPPORTIVE ABOUT YOUR GOALS?

Kelsey is very needy. She needs a lot of attention and she deserves it. I just was not in the place to give her all that attention. It was time to start growing up for me and start getting my life together. I know it may look selfish to the viewers but I have lived for so many relationships in my past and I was not going to do it anymore. Kelsey has always been my number one supporter. She just does not really get what it is I want right now out of life. It is not always fun and sex. You have to be a team. THIS SEASON SEEMS MORE DYNAMIC AND YES, THERE ARE THE SEX SCENES AND NUDITY. I KNOW IT’S CABLE, BUT DO YOU FEEL THEY WERE NECESSARY AND WHY DID YOU AGREE TO HAVING YOURS AS PART OF THE SHOW.

I am very comfortable with my body. The original L Word had so much sex in it and that is what honestly helped me figure out I was a lesbian. It made it real, normal and ok. Sex is sex. It’s a part of life and being in love. If you are going to film me and my life… well, I do I get naked and I do have sex. Yes people, I do have sex! I like that I am part of a network like Showtime that doesn’t have so many boundaries as to what they can show. DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING NEW ABOUT YOURSELF THIS TIME?

Yes! I have struggled with a drinking problem my whole life and once cameras were in my life, I was not able to hide it anymore. Kelsey had known that my battle with drinking was getting worse and when we started filming I woke up after a really bad night and said no more! If the

show had not been there, I don’t know that I would have stopped as quickly as I did. It made me look at an issue I had been avoiding for years.

karma, I never meant harm to the girls, which is why I never chose to be in a relationship at the time. So I’m not sure if it’s karma, but yes, this “wild child” can be vulnerable too (laughs).

HOW DO YOU FEEL WITH THIS CAST AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FOR YOU FROM SEASON ONE?

WE’VE LEARNED YOU HAVE BECOME A PRO-

I love the cast. I think they got it right. I am very close to the original cast. This season though we really have this young diverse group of women who really open themselves up. I think what makes the biggest difference is the fact that we are all friends and our lives are intertwined. I feel this season looks more like the original show. The stories go a lot deeper.

MOTER FOR A WOMEN’S NIGHT IN WEST HOLLYWOOD. WAS THAT AN OBVIOUS STEP FOR YOU?

Somewhat, yes. I go out a lot and enjoy my social life for sure. So if I can be part of a new night of bringing different groups of women together than I’m about it. My job doesn’t suck, that’s for sure! THIS SEASON SEEMS MORE DYNAMIC AND YES, THERE ARE THE SEX SCENES AND

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

I am working on my fashion blog tenderomi.com and my jewelry line, Hija Por Vida. I’m staying sober and taking life one day at a time. WHITNEY Returning from season one, Whitney is the untamed lover of life. An undeniable woman magnet, her life is a complicated web of friends and exes, and exes who are friends. By far the biggest complication is Sara—the temptation Whitney just can’t seem to resist. But beyond the girl drama, Whitney is making 2011 her year to re-focus on her creative passions and give back to the community.

“I HAVE BEEN ASKED AFTER SEASON 1 IF I REGRETTED THE SCENE WITH ROMI, AND TO THIS I SAY, WOULD YOU ASK ME THE SAME QUESTION IF I WAS A MAN?” —Whitney

WELCOME BACK. THIS MIGHT BE ALSO A QUESTIONS FOR THE PRODUCERS, BUT WHY DO YOU THINK THEY BROUGHT YOU BACK

HOW DO YOU FEEL WITH THIS CAST AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT?

One of the things I’m most grateful in gaining from this experience is a second family. Most of the girls from Season 1 and I are incredibly close so it was bittersweet in a sense when new women where cast. With getting acquainted with the new girls this season I must say that, again, I am so lucky to be surrounded by such dynamic and amazing people and my Real L Word family has grown even bigger. DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING NEW ABOUT YOURSELF THIS TIME?

THE NEW GIRLS, OMG! YOU OBVIOUSLY ENJOY THAT DRAMA OR DO YOU SEE IT MORE LIKE A CHALLENGE?

Oh jeez, of course. Through the process alone you learn about yourself and that’s mainly why I even did the show in the first place. It can be pretty challenging at times to see yourself under a microscope. I definitely felt I have grown a lot since the beginning of season 1 and this season I’m definitely taking the training wheels off my relationship potential and trying to get out with no scraped knees. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME POSTS ON OUR SOCIAL PAGES ABOUT SEEING YOU VULNERABLE AND SOMEWHAT HURT/DISAPPOINTED, BY SARA IN THIS CASE. I GUESS YOU CAN CALL IT KARMA. HOW DO YOU SEE IT?

(laughs) Karma eh? Well, people have their own opinions for sure and they are allowed. I definitely watch back some episodes from Season 1 and can acknowledge that some of the decisions I made with some of the girls weren’t always the best, but it’s a learning experience. In terms of

Reality shows have really opened up a whole new world in television and I feel like The Real L Word has opened up a new world in reality TV. I feel lucky to be part of a project that is telling the whole story of our lives, uncensored. Turns out in real life, I have sex, and on top of that my intimate relationships are usually key pieces to the puzzle. I have been asked after Season 1 if I regretted the scene with Romi, and to this I say, would you ask me the same question if I was a man? We are consenting adults who care about one another and I think not only does it add to the story but it is empowering to women to have real “non-porn” sex portrayed. WHAT’S UP WITH THE EXS, THE EX-EX-EXS &

FOR SEASON 2?

I think when I signed on to be part of this project I made a pledge to myself that I was going to approach it completely uncensored. Whether it’s the kitchen, the bathroom, or the bedroom, my world would be open; as you could see in season 1. I think it allowed my story to click with people because they saw everything from the laughs to the down and dirty and they could relate, or it was like a car wreck that you couldn’t look away from. Either way, it worked.

NUDES. DO YOU FEEL THEY WERE NECESSARY AND WHY DID YOU AGREE TO HAVING YOURS AS PART OF THE SHOW?

25 -

I’m a people lover what can I say! (laughs) But, honestly regarding my exes and exes-exes, my view is this: If I was with you before I must have cared about you. So just because we didn’t work out romantically, doesn’t mean we should leave each other’s lives. HOW IS YOUR CHARITY WORK GOING?

Good! Im hoping to tie in business and nonprofit to help generate funds for causes I care about through items I create. I’m also really excited about a new project I’m going to be working on making interview style videos of animals in high kill shelters to encourage adoptions. My two biggest goals right now are trying to launch my eco-friendly clothing line, Natural Artifacts, and working on my animal adoption advocacy videos. But I’ll tell you this much....you haven’t seen the end of me yet! CATCH THE REAL L WORD SEASON 2 FINALE ON JULY 31ST ON SHOWTIME, 10PM.

BY MATERIAL GIRL

I have to give 2 thumbs up to the new Suave Professionals line. Since living in Florida means a constant fight against frizz due to heat and humidity, I have tried many products without success. Suave’s SLEEK ANTI-FRIZZ CREAM is a winner. You only need a small portion, smells great and lasts a long time. I just love it! For thin hair, the VOLUMINIZING MOUSSE is a blessing. It really works and it leaves your hair smooth. The last touch is the VIBRANT SHINE, adding a little spark of light to your hair. Make sure you don’t over-spray or spray too close to hair as it will look greasy instead.

Summertime = frizzy hair and, for some of us, more-than-usual oily skin. Here are some great and very affordable products I personally tested to make this summer a shine & frizz-free one!

PUT THE SHINE AWAY Anytime is good to get rid of dead skin cells. Sephora’s BROWN SUGAR AND APRICOT BODY SCRUB ($18) is just delicious, especially if your girl is rubbing it on you. It leaves your body smelling yummy and feeling smooth. If you are not used to body scrubs, it might feel too waxy at first. Sephora’s MOISTURIZING LOTION ($22) is a great way to prep in the morning, it absorbs quickly. Summer is the worst for oily skin. I absolutely love and recommend MAC’s OIL CONTROL LOTION ($15). It absorbs quickly and you just need a little for the whole face. It really works. When it comes to foundation, MAC’s STUDIO FIX FLUID ($26.50) is one of the best I have tried. It is very light, nice natural matte finish, long-lasting and absorbs oil. Thumbs up to MAC! Available at Sephora, you can also try Tarina Tarantino’s PEARL GLOW PRIMER ($32). It acts as primer and foundation, too. It works good for oil control. It is a good idea to always carry in your purse BLOTTING PAPERS ($12 for 100) in case you are as obsessive as I am when it comes to putting the shine away. At bedtime, Shephora’s REFRESHING TONER ($12) comes in handy after make up removal. >> sephora.com | >> maccosmetics.com SHE -

TWO OF OUR OWN

BY MARISSA COHEN

ARE RECOGNIZED IN OFFICIAL CONGRESSIONAL RECORDS FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF LGBT FAMILIES AND YOUTHS South Florida is a stomping ground for organizations fighting for the rights of LGBT families and youths. Alongside many others, one of our own, the National Voices for Equality, Education, and Enlightenment (NVEEE) is a champion in this fight. Founded in 2009 by Jowharah Sanders, NVEEE was established to empower communities and facilitate open communication surrounding increasing levels of bullying, violence, and suicide among students of all ages, ethnicities, and identities. Last month, on June 5, NVEEE’s red-carpet fundraiser, “The Art of Liberation”, held at the W Hotel in Washington D.C, was an absolute success which truly propelled the launch of NVEEE’s “Not On My Watch” Anti-Bullying Campaign. NVEEE welcomed entertainment and sports celebrities, elected officials, business and community leaders, educators, and of course teens from across the nation, as they met in our nations capital to kick off its antibullying campaign”, the night was not only a show stopper, it was groundbreaking. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson’s Chief of Staff, Tasha Cole and Senior Advisor, Keenan Austin paid tribute to NVEEE and its founder, Jowharah Sanders, in Official Congressional Record for its extraordinary work of providing children and families with support services, and for being agents of change. This Proclamation is entered into the Library of Congress and the Congressional Records of the United States. Special Guests included Director and Screen Actor Morris Chestnut, Television and Screen Actor Omari Hardwick, NFL Player Visanthe Shiancoe of the Minnesota Vikings, BJ Coleman, and celebrated jazz recording artist Art Sherrod, Jr., who offered a heart-rending rendition of “I Believe I Can Fly” by R-Kelly. Although this star-studded event featured seasoned community leaders and anti-bullying advocates, it was NVEEE’s Teen Mentors and Peace Ambassadors who stole the show. Teens like, Jacob carpenter, Jamia Barber, Kaylyn Schubert, Ruth Sanders, Brianna Spencer, Josie Lou Ratley, As Omari Hardwick delivered a personalized in-promptu spoken word piece dedicated to NVEEE teens, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room as the crowd roared with excitement and inspiration. Each of the teens received plaques in honor of their unwavering commitment to “being the change (they) want to see in the world”. This incredible opportunity has made it possible for NVEEE’s Teen Mentors and Peace Ambassadors to introduce their signature “Not On My Watch Bullying & Harassment Prevention Workshop” to the nation. Its Teen Mentors and Peace Ambassadors have created a thoughtprovoking and interactive presentation with proven results. Through NVEEE’s “Not On My Watch Anti-Bullying Campaign”, the message will continue to be heard. [ NVEEE.ORG ]

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT... NEW YORK’S WIN ON MARRIAG EQUALITY ON JUNE 24, 2011—ALMOST 42 YEARS AFTER STONEWALL RIOTS ON JUNE 28, 1969.

FEB ‘08 THE L WORD SEASON 5 PREMIERE PARTY AT BONGOS IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI. ....................................................................................

EQUALITY FLORIDA: “Winning marriage in New York is particularly special for Florida’s LGBT community. So many of us either came from New York, have 2nd homes there, or have friends and family in New York... But here in Florida we are also moving in the direction of equality, and today 6.7 million Floridians live in communities that recognize our families with domestic partnership benefits. Our goal is the same as our friends’ in New York, and this victory is a turning point that brings us much closer to full marriage equality for all of our families.” — Deputy Director Stratton Pollitzer WANDA SYKES: “When I land in Paris, I hope to be able to toast to marriage equality in NY. Peace and love!” —Via Tiwtter PFLAG NATIONAL: “After years of actively fighting for marriage equality in New York State, I am elated that both of my sons — gay and straight — will now have the same basic civil right to marry the person they love in the state in which they were raised.” —Dale Bernstein, PFLAG National Board Member, PFLAG Mom, and lifelong New York resident. ROSIE O’DONNELL: ”Happy gays r here again!” —Via Twitter FREEDOM TO MARRY: “The surge in new support and this epic win in New York add to the momentum for the work ahead: ending the cruel exclusion from marriage in other states and overturning the so-called ‘Defense of Marriage Act,’ which denies married gay and lesbian couples the safety-net of protections and responsibilities marriage brings at the federal level.” —Evan Wolfson, Founder and President HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN: “There’s no doubt that this was the most unified marriage effort ever... Today’s victory is made even sweeter by the fact that organizations were able to rally around a common goal, work hard and deliver a huge win for civil and human rights.” —Joe Solmonese, President. NATIONAL GAY & LESBIAN TASK FORCE: “...To finally be able to share and celebrate one’s love and commitment both publicly and legally is a lifelong dream for tens of thousands of same-sex couples and their families. This vote affirms our common humanity... It honors New York’s unique history as being the place where the modern gay rights movement sprang to life 42 years ago at the Stonewall Inn in New York City...” —Rea Carey, Executive Director NEW YORK STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL: “At our founding, what made America different from every other country that existed before was a commitment to an ideal that had never been advanced – that all are created equal, endowed by their Creator with the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness... Today, our state rose to the challenge, and New York, once again, has carried on this great American tradition.” — Eric T. Schneiderman LADY GAGA: “I can’t stop crying...The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice + equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it!!!” —Via Twitter EMPIRE STATE PRIDE AGENDA: “It’s truly a historic night for love, our families, and democracy won.” —Ross Levi, Executive Director

The New York freedom to marry bill passed in the Assembly 82-47 and then in the Republican-led Senate 33-29. Law goes into effect July 24, 2011. SHE -

SHE SCOPES

WITH THE VILLAGE SAGE

AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19

LEO JULY 23 - AUG 23

‘Show me the money’ is your new mantra as your career is your entire focus. Expanding your sphere of influence and your store of knowledge will definitely be extremely beneficial to you. However, you do need to take care not to neglect your loved ones in your pursuit of a better future. Stress is a waste of good brain power and solves nothing. Stay positive with yourself, the situation and the significant others in your life.

It’s time to stop burning the candle at both ends and take some needed time out. This will be a very good thing for yourself and the others in your life. Pay attention to any issues that might pop, uninvited, from your subconscious where you thought it was safely buried away. Now’s the time to deal with them as the ‘you’ you are now. Be gone with any negative self-talk and be totally confident in your ability to move forward, unencumbered.

PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20

VIRGO AUG 24 - SEPT 23

There’s a good chance you’ll be wearing your rose colored glasses, and we all know what that means. You’re definitely in the mood for love and therein lies the danger. As long as ‘I want’ doesn’t turn into ‘I do’ immediately after, you should enjoy this opportunity for life’s pleasures. Be realistic about your goals and don’t expect financial aid anytime soon, so be proactive in seeking new, better, and more opportunities and sources of income.

You’re feeling very self-protective these days. Don’t let that prevent you from taking advantage of all the opportunities to network. Remember to actually stick to one thing at a time. Pay close attention to any communication problems as you have greater clarity now about your contribution to the confusion, and therefore, will now be better able to make whatever adjustments necessary to say it differently, hear it differently, and react and resolve it differently.

ARIES MAR 21 - APR 19

LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23

You have to pump yourself up to finish what you’ve started before rushing off to start your next project. Move your base of operations, thereby increasing your sphere of influence. Be careful that you don’t make impulsive moves that undermine your existing foundation. Convince others that your ideas have merit, instead of bullying them into submission. Avoid arguments or at least think before you say anything that you can’t take back. Stay focused on the positive and strategize your future success.

Most of your attention is on your career and your sphere of influence in the business community. Even if conditions are not ideal, don’t give up. Patience and persistence will win the prize. Learn new ways to get goals accomplished and to learn new techniques in dealing with the competing demands of work and relationships. Don’t forget that your primary responsibility is to yourself, so make sure you’re taking care of your own wants and needs too.

TAURUS APR 20 - MAY 20

SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22

Changes are about to happen to you. Go with the flow and don’t waste precious energy fighting to swim upstream. Instead of stubbornly holding on to what you thought, be open to what others think. Enjoy a change of pace. Accept and extend invitations to join like-minded others to share ideas and information. This is a great time to reconnect with your friends and family, so relax and have some fun

You’re anxious to get started on your best idea ever. However, it is a turbulent course that you have chosen, and in order to successfully navigate it, you’ll have to learn better coping skills to maintain your balance. You’ll need to exercise discipline and commitment, but you will get there. Keep fine-tuning your plans, and keep dreaming of the rewards you’ll obtain for all of your efforts. Just don’t allow yourself to become too distracted.

GEMINI MAY 21 - JUN 21

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

Your entire focus is on your financial situation. Your vision of the future is driving your present activities and you find yourself actively making adjustments to your everyday routines. Take stock of what you already have before giving yourself permission to go on a spending spree. Allow yourself some time off to play, to reconnect with loved ones, or just to chill out and recharge your batteries and dream up new plans for world domination.

Changes have to happen. However, you’re truly confused and uncertain about what those changes might be. Review the past with an eye to the future, and go way below the surface of your current situation to the root cause. Give yourself permission to enjoy life while you’re figuring out your next move. Travel even if you’re only able to explore locally. That goes for business opportunities and ideas as well.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22

CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 19

Even though the thought of changes is scary, the thought of staying in the status-quo is equally daunting. You’ll cope and thrive. That’s not to say that you won’t have emotional responses to situations, but you don’t have to breakdown over them. Strive for emotional balance and you’ll be surprised at how quickly things will work out. Now’s a good time to use every opportunity to network yourself and your ideas and to re-introduce yourself to influential people.

You’ll have to walk a fine line between professional responsibilities and needy personal relationships. Oh yes, it’s going to be an interesting month for sure, but it doesn’t have to be an unproductive month. Real progress can be made towards overcoming obstacles to harmony and happiness. Your best strategy is to compromise and cooperate if you want to avoid fights for control. Remember, we can only really control ourselves. Only you can prevent forest fires.
