...............................................................................................................................................................................................

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks trying to wrap me head around the idea of volunteering. There are multiple areas in life where this volunteering thing comes into play. A couple of times, I volunteered to take on this really big task at home. By the third time, I realized it had began to be expected of me to do it and suddenly the, “Thank you so much for doing that,” became, “You know, I really wish you hadn’t done this while you were doing that.” Translation? Appreciation was replaced with criticism. Not long ago, I volunteered to help a couple of friends manage their money and bills, so they would always know exactly how much play money they had and wouldn’t overextend themselves. Of course, sometimes when you live paycheck to paycheck, you have to find ways to rob Peter to pay Paul. Everything went like clockwork for several months, until the day that the words, “Thank you so much for helping us with this,” became, “I can’t believe you didn’t pay Peter yet this month.” Translation? Appreciation was replaced with criticism. For the last five years, I have volunteered within my home community. While many communities turn to management companies to do the work, we chose to do it ourselves, not only to save money but also because no management company will care as much about our community as those who actually live here. The last year has been a very taxing one, as virtually every volunteer has found that the words, “Thank you so much for all you do for us,” became, “I can’t believe you decided to do it like that.” Translation? Well, you get it. Today I am faced with a rather important decision, because by tonight I must know whether or not I am willing to volunteer to take on more responsibility in my community. There is a huge part of me that doesn’t want to do it. It’s the same part that wants to be able to sit back and watch others experience what it feels like when you work your ass off only to have someone else—who isn’t willing to do the job—come along and be critical of how you did it. Yet, in my heart I know that I really am the best equipped to volunteer to do the job. And I also know that if I sit back and watch someone who doesn’t have the skill set attempt to do something they just don’t know how to do, I will wind up being one of the people who criticizes how they do it. It’s like sending a car mechanic in to perform brain surgery, while the brain surgeon—who refused to do the surgery—watches from the crow’s nest shouting, “No, no! Not like that!” and then is bitter when the patient becomes a vegetable. I’m not saying I am a brain surgeon. Rocket scientist, perhaps, but certainly not a brain surgeon. I’m just saying that this whole volunteering thing loses the warm and fuzzy feeling of “giving back” when you are faced with constant criticism. When you are paid to do a job, you are also paid to deal with the critics and with others who want to tell you a different way to do your job. But when, out of the kindness of your heart, you volunteer your time, energy, knowledge and love to do a job that no one else is lining up to do, you have to have some seriously thick skin to take the constant nay-saying. I’m not sure what I will do tonight. I suppose I’ll let my conscience guide me in the moment. One thing I do know is that I now have a greater appreciation for those who are willing to step up and volunteer to do things that no one else can or will do. And I am reminding myself—and you—that it’s not okay to just stand back and point at all the problems, unless you are willing to be an active part of the solution. See you next month!

k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang released Sing it Loud, her first record made entirely with a band of her own since the pair of albums with the Reclines that launched her groundbreaking career over 20 years ago. This collection of songs reflects the organic, collaborative nature of the sessions, which took place at Pisapia’s Middletree Studios in Nashville. Many of the songs were recorded live in the studio and that energy is palpable. In addition to the original material, Sing it Loud also includes a striking version of Talking Heads’ ”Heaven.”

In the romedy flick Something Borrowed, Rachel is a talented attorney at a top New York law firm, a generous and loyal friend and, unhappily, still single. But after one drink too many at her 30th birthday party, perpetual good girl Rachel unexpectedly ends up in bed with the guy she’s had a crush on since law school, who just happens to be Darcy’s fiancé. When Rachel and Darcy’s lifelong friendship collides with true love, it leads to unexpected complications and explosive romantic revelations. Stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson. Opens May 6.

The music of Sade is back with The Ultimate Collection. The must-have, 29-track, two-disc album includes four new, never-before heard songs including a remix of “The Moon And The Sky” (featuring Jay-Z). The Ultimate Collection also features 15 tracks that were not included on Sade’s 1994 “Best Of” album. Here for the first time, fans can find all of their favorite Sade classics including songs from Lover’s Rock and Soldier Of Love: “Your Love Is King,” “Smooth Operator,” “The Sweetest Taboo” and many more! Break out the massage oil, light the candles, ladies!

Born This Way is the upcoming third studio album by Lady Gaga, to be released on May 23. The writing of the album took place in 2010 during her Monster Ball Tour. Preceding its release, the album’s lead single and title track “Born This Way” debuted on February 11. Lady Gaga said about this new release, “The album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done and I’m so excited about it. The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean in my own life—it’s utter liberation.”

Wanda Sykes has signed on to guest star for the third season of the hit Lifetime dramedy series Drop Dead Diva, starring Brooke Elliott, in the fifth episode that was ripped straight from the headlines. Sykes will play the character of Judge Yvonne Wright, who refuses to be swayed by Jane Bingum’s courtroom theatrics. This special episode was inspired by the real-life story of Mississippi high school student Constance McMillen, who was denied access to her prom because of her sexual orientation. In a unique twist, McMillen will be on board to play a cameo role.

In a world where so much emphasis is placed on looks and image, there’s nothing more refreshing that NBC’s new series The Voice, a singing competition that really is about singing. Four of the music world’s heavy hitters, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton become coaches to a team they chose on voice alone, as they compete toward one ultimate winner. With two openly gay women—including South Florida’s own Bev McClellan—making up the vocal powerhouses, this is one competition show you won’t want to miss! Airs Tuesdays at 9pm.

[

NOT TO BE MISSED: The hilarious comedy chick flick, Bridesmaids, starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Burn and more. Picked as her best friend's maid of honor, lovelorn and broke Annie (Wiig) looks to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids. Opens May 13.

LET’S CELEBRATE FORT LAUDERDALE The Rainbow Business Coalition of Greater Fort Lauderdale (RBC), an association of representatives of LGBT businesses and community leaders that serve both residents and visitors, will host a celebration event for the over 800 international delegates attending the upcoming International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) convention scheduled for May 10-15, 2011. Fort Lauderdale was selected as the host city for “Unleashed,” the organization’s 28th annual global convention. The RBC, along with the city’s public and private sector entities, recognizes this as an important opportunity to showcase Greater Fort Lauderdale in a positive manner and to create a fun, festive and memorable experience for all the visiting delegates. As part of the convention, the RBC will hold a consumer travel show on Friday, May 13th featuring many of the IGLTA member destinations and travel products for the LGBT traveler. Following the travel show, the RBC has also planned a concert with entertainment for all the delegates and the local LGBT community to enjoy. Headlining the concert is our cover girl and Billboard Recording Artist Kristine W, as well as performances by Tony Cruz and Charlotte McKinnon. The consumer show and concert will be held at Hagen Park at 2020 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, 6P – 11P. This is a free event and open to anyone and everyone, so ladies, make your plans to have some fun! Several after-parties will be held at some of Fort Lauderdale’s popular bars & nightclubs. “We are delighted to be working with the RBC in welcoming our delegates to Fort Lauderdale,” said IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella. “In addition to the excellent networking and educational opportunities our convention provides, we want our attendees to experience the LGBT-affirming social environment the destination offers.” The RBC primary mission of the Coalition is to unite the LGBT community by leadership and advocacy. RBC priorities include focusing on communications and networking, promoting new business opportunities, driving sustainable economic growth while expanding market reach and share for the overall benefit of the LGBT community of Greater Fort Lauderdale. SAVE DADE PARTNERING WITH MIAMIDADE GAY & LESBIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO CREATE BUSINESS EQUALITY INDEX SAVE Dade is partnering with the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce to roll out the South Florida Business Equality Index. The index will rank the LGBT friendliness of local businesses and will launch in May 2011. Despite recent victories for LGBT rights throughout the country, it is easy to forget that Florida is one of the 29 states where you can be fired from your job simply for being gay or transgender. A growing number of Floridians support equality for gay and transgender people, but the risk for wrongful termination of LGBT citizens still exists. “We believe that termination of employment because of one’s sexual identity or orientation is an egregious violation of civil liberties. In addition, inclusive employment protections for people who are LGBT is good for business and the community. Our business community can lead the way for fair and equal employment protections to be achieved in local and state government. That’s why we are partnering with the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce to roll out the South Florida Business Equality Index.” The Index gives a one-of-a-kind look into South Florida’s businesses and their treatment and support for the LGBT community. Since business leads government in innovation and inclusion, the Index will help accelerate LGBT inclusiveness in South Florida businesses and help stimulate public policy to make fair employment protections a reality. For the latest information about the index and to place a listing for your business go to savedade.org. For further information and questions, contact Steve Adkins at mdglcc@bellsouth.net or 305.673.4440.

PREPARING TO FILE FOR BANKRUPTCY Filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition triggers an automatic stay of most collection actions against the debtor’s property and creates a “bankruptcy estate”, which then is administered by a bankruptcy trustee. One of the major benefits of the bankruptcy is that debt collection efforts must stop once bankruptcy is filed. After filing, all property becomes the property of the court and cannot be sold or given away without the court’s permission. However, the debtor can exempt certain property, which he/she then retains. These exemptions are specific and will be discussed with your attorney. The average Chapter 7 debtor will keep most, if not all, of his or her personal property. However, after filing, and before the trustee has abandoned his or her interest in your property, you must remember that your nonexempt property is not yours to do with as you please. For example, if you have a 2010 Jaguar that you own outright and you are filing for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy (that is, a complete discharge of all debt) that car must be turned over to the trustee who will convert it to cash for distribution to the creditors. In the event that you qualify and have personal or real property that is not exempt, you may want to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceeding in which you enter into a plan to repay a portion of your debt and retain your non-exempt property. Your attorney will caution you against certain improper exemption tactics and prohibited transfers prior to filing. The debtor must be cautious about converting nonexempt property to exempt property. Actions that deplete the es-

tate (such as selling your boat to your brother for less than fair market value) or that favor one creditor over others may be avoided by the trustee or may threaten the debtor’s right to a discharge. While a bankruptcy filing will usually be noted on a debtor’s credit rating for up to ten years, you may still repair your credit and move on with your life. Moreover, as a general rule, no governmental agency or private employer may discriminate against a debtor for filing bankruptcy. If you believe you are unable to pay your debt, you should stop using all credit cards and obtain no further cash advances or loans. When you file, all debts and assets must be disclosed. The possible consequences of non-disclosure, dishonesty or lack of cooperation could be denial of discharge of all debts, revocation of the discharge and/or a charge against the debtor for perjury (a felony) or other bankruptcy crimes. The Justice Department vigorously pursues bankruptcy crimes. After filing, discharge may take from three months to six months or more if creditors object - however, if you are honest with your attorney, he or she should be able to anticipate possible problems and avoid any creditor objections. In the vast majority of Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings, the debtors keep their home, car and other personal property without problems from creditors.

LIFE AFTER BANKRUPTCY Your attorney will help you understand your options in rebuilding your credit score and how to face life after bankruptcy. Many debtors are under the mistaken impression that once they file for bankruptcy it will take years to rebuild their credit, if at all. This is simply not the case. SHE -

shep15Bankruptcy.pmd

15 -

While it will take time to rebuild your credit score, there are ways that you can apply for and obtain credit, even in the few months following the completion of your bankruptcy case. By keeping current on your bills and mortgage payment, you will qualify for a low balance credit card. You can also apply for a “secured” credit card. If you use that card responsibly and pay off the balance, your credit score will improve and you may be able to get higher limit credit cards. With patience and responsibility, it is possible to fully recover from bankruptcy and rebuild your good credit. SOME ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO REBUILD YOUR LIFE AFTER BANKRUPTCY: • Get a secured credit card. • Use your credit card wisely – you do not want to be in the same situation again. • Pay all of your bills on time. • Create a budget and stick to it, spending money only on necessary expenses. • Save as much as possible. • Track your credit report to keep an eye on your progress.

Most of us got to know Lisa Ling in 1999, when she became one of the co-hosts of The View. What most of us didn’t know was that Lisa’s career in television and journalism began years before that, at the age of 16. By 18 years old, she had become one of the youngest reporters for Channel One News, which serves 8.5 million students in 12,000 high schools nationwide. Starting out as a reporter for the satellite news service, she went on to cover global events. She reported from as many as two dozen countries, including Russia, Cambodia, Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, China, Japan, India, Albania, where she covered the bitter civil war and the Kosovo refugee crisis. She also covered the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Before the age of 25, Lisa Ling was named Channel One’s senior war correspondent. Among her many accomplishments, this highly respected TV journalist and producer has produced eight documentaries for PBS, has been the host of National Geographic Explorer, a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show and now is both the host and an Executive Producer of Our America With Lisa Ling on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network. From religious movements to sex offenders to drug addiction and online brides, Our America with Lisa Ling takes viewers along for an inSHE -

depth and insightful look at some of this country’s most controversial and thought-provoking issues. In each episode, Lisa immerses herself into the lives of the people she meets, offering compelling accounts of varied experiences into some of our nation’s most contentious topics. In sharing these stories, Lisa challenges viewers to understand different perspectives and even question what they themselves have always known to be true in Our America. Last month, I had the opportunity to talk with Lisa Ling about her career, her new show and specifically, the thought and dialogue-provoking “Pray the Gay Away?” episode. YOU’VE BEEN A JOURNALIST SINCE THE AGE OF 16. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT? I actually started working in TV at 16 and I started working as a reporter when I was 18 for a show called Channel One News. Anderson Cooper was one of my colleagues. My most memorable assignment was when I went to Afghanistan at 21 years old. What I saw there propelled me to want to tell stories for my career. LET’S JUMP FORWARD TO YOUR STINT ON THE VIEW WHEN AMERICA

FELL IN LOVE WITH YOU. WHAT ARE YOUR MOST VIVID MEMORIES OF BEING A PART OF THAT SHOW? Sitting around a piano with Elton John and having my belly button pierced. I know, random. HOW DID OUR AMERICA ON OWN COME ABOUT FOR YOU? I had been working as the field correspondent for Oprah and Harpo. OWN later asked me to do some work for them. That series went on to become Our America. WHAT DID YOU MOST HOPE WOULD COME OUT OF THE “PRAY THE GAY AWAY?” EPISODE? There was a posting from a viewer that sums it up. He said, “…I’ll be honest. I was expecting to watch this documentary and cringe all the way through it. I am unashamedly a Christian, meaning that I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I find that usually documentaries like this portray Christians in an overtly negative and skewed way. This one was no exception, but it did make me think about how to verbalize my thoughts on ‘the church’ in regards to inclusion and equality…” (Editor’s note: This post was too long to print in its entirety, but definitely worth the read. Find it at: www.millionsofmiles.com/2011/03/400th-post-oprah-made-methink.html) I WAS INTRIGUED BY THE FACT THAT YOU COULD NOT DISCLOSE THE LOCATION FOR THE EXODUS CONFERENCE PRESENTED AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE SHOW AND ALSO THAT YOU COULD NOT SHOW PEOPLE’S FACES. IT DID LOOK LIKE YOU SAID, “A SECRET SOCIETY.” WHY WAS THAT? There were so many people there who were hiding a secret pain: That they were attracted to the same sex and didn’t think it was right in the eyes of their God. CONSIDERING YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE NOH8 CAMPAIGN, DID YOU HAVE ANY BIASES GOING INTO THAT EPISODE? Yes, I am an unabashed Gay Rights activist and I went to the Exodus Conference looking for the truth and looking for some answers, but no one tried to even debate me. They are people who choose to attend the conference for their own reasons. If they don’t feel they are living in accordance with what they believe God wants, then it’s their prerogative to try and change if they so chose. My problem is when organizations condemn others for not choosing the same path. Live how you want to live, but don’t tell me—or anyone else—how to live. THROUGH THAT EPISODE, YOU’VE CERTAINLY OPENED UP A BIG DIALOGUE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. WE POSTED THE VIDEO ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AND OUR FRIENDS AND READERS THINK YOU DID A GREAT JOB TRYING TO SHOW ALL SIDES. HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN WHAT YOU HOPED FOR? The response has been overwhelmingly positive. One of my dearest friends, Jaime, told me that it felt like I was talking to his 14-year-old self. I told him that there were some gay activists who were violently upset that we even allowed Exodus to have a platform. The last thing that I wanted to do was upset people in the Gay Community. This is part of the note that Jaime wrote to me: ”You won’t change their minds any easier than you will change the minds of the religious activists who think you didn’t do enough to expose the heinous evil that is being propagated at the Brainwashing Camp for Misguided Heterocapable Kids. I love the content of information that Bill Maher and Michael Moore give us with their movies, such as Sicko and Religulous. What I don’t like is the hyperbolic way they try to shove it down our throats that there is absolute good versus absolute evil. You, on

the other hand, present us with information in a compelling, yet evenhanded way and say, ‘Think about it.’ You give us credit for being smart enough to think about it. As someone who has lived that life and suffered through the horrible pressure of being brow-beaten to be something I was not and could not be, I thought you did an amazing job with that show. I am recommending it to anyone and everyone.” HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE DOING THE SEGMENT AT THE CAMP WITH THE NAMING PROJECT VS. EXODUS? I found the kids at the Naming Project to have a stronger sense of faith than just about anyone I’ve ever met. Despite condemnation from some of their churches and judgment from some in the Gay Community, they continue to praise God while living their true selves. I was so moved by them and how proud they were to be gay and children of God made in his image. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE TOPICS FOR THE SHOW? I read a lot and I get ideas from ordinary people. Everyone has a story to tell. Most people want their stories to be told and to be better understood. FROM THIS FIRST SEASON, WHICH OF THE EPISODES HAS HAD THE MOST PROFOUND EFFECT ON YOU AND WHY? When Tan from our episode “Transgender Lives,” told me that for the first time, people in his life truly understand him after watching our show, I was utterly moved and proud that we precipitated that change of thought. LAST AND CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, A SECOND SEASON FOR OUR AMERICA WITH LISA LING HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED. CONGRATULATIONS! WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE SECOND SEASON? WHY DO YOU THINK THE SERIES HAS CAPTIVATED THE VIEWERS SO MUCH? We are well underway into production on Season 2. I can’t say what the stories are, but I will promise that all of the topics will make people think. I think viewers have responded because they want to be more aware of the people who inhabit this land that we share. It’s not about investigating the wrongs of society. It’s about trying to understand people better so that we can be better people. OUR AMERICA WITH LISA LING AIRS ON THE OWN NETWORK, TUESDAYS AT 10PM.

Women who love women love Orlando in June. From the 2nd - 6th, the city gets super hot, and swells with thousands of lesbians who travel the globe to party like rock stars in an enchanted place where dreams come true. Now celebrating its 10th year, the fun-filled entertainmentpacked “Girls in Wonderland” along with Gay Days Orlando has proudly become a part of central Florida’s HER-itage. In honor of this special anniversary, the miracle workers at Pandora, the leading LBT event and destination weekend producers, have invited the cast of Showtime’s The Real L Word to the party. These sexy reality TV celebs are hosting the “I Love Rock n Roll” Saturday night gala at House of Blues. Also, one lucky “Girls in Wonderland” attendee, randomly chosen, will win a Friday night date with Whitney or Rose. Each year, the Pandora team—Alison Burgos, Yesi Olivera-Leon and Amy Alonso— raises the bar on this heavenly extra-long fun in the sun weekend tradition. Besides securing spotlight evening entertainment featuring live performances by rocker Melissa Crispo, Baby Blue and Shut Up and Dance, Pandora brings along a rousing gyrating core of leggy dancers and some of the best Djs on the planet, notably Dj Lisa Pitman, Dj Pat Pat, DJ Just Steph and Dj Zehno. Daily pool parties also whet the appe-

tite. Numerous splash bashes include music, poolside cocktails, games and giveaways. Bikinis by day, party clothes by night… the immediate goal is pure satisfaction. But this feel good weekend is also a do good event. Pandora producer Yesi Olivera-Leon concurs, “We are pioneers in producing women’s events for charity. Good causes motivate us!” Indeed, Girls in Wonderland pays homage and partial profits to the trailblazing NCLR, The National Council for Lesbian Rights. This dynamic group is committed to the rights and safety of lesbians and the greater LGBT community and their families through litigation, public policy and education. The whole weekend radiates with a “don’t worry, be happy” vibe. To assure that no guest feels uneasy about arriving on time, getting lost, or drinking and driving, Pandora offers complimentary transportation to and from each nightly venue. Olivera-Leon is pleased to provide this assurance for guests, “Of course we want everyone to have an amazing time, but safety first!” The emphasis is clearly on fun, freedom, and relaxation for all participants. Headquarters for Girls in Wonderland is the Courtyard Village in Lake Buena Vista. Guests take over two large hotels, The Courtyard Marriot and The Fairfield Inn. While both establishments boast a list of inviting amenities SHE -

such as complimentary WIFI and guest parking, each one has its own personality. Like a wild child and her mellower sister, the Marriott has a rambunctious reputation and the Fairfield Inn is a bit more laid back. These hotels host fabulous pool parties and hotel guests always get in free to both. With gay women flocking here from all over the world to join in the Girls in Wonderland festivities, it’s hard to believe that once upon a time, Orlando did not cater to the gay princesses of the world. Olivera Leon recalls, “We noticed only men’s events here, so right then and there we started figuring out ways to fill the void.” The Pandora visionaries quickly resolved the issue, and soon enough, in this magical land, lesbian celebrations took root and started to grow. Pandora’s mission to connect and strengthen the gay female community in the context of total enjoyment and relaxation is fully flourishing now. At Girls in Wonderland, the magical mood is so crazy and contagious, it is rumored Cinderella has been wooed over to the lesbian lifestyle and that now, she is living more happily ever after than ever!

If you’ve ever spent time in a nightclub, you know exactly who Kristine W. is. Her sound has bodies bumping and grinding across dance floors across the globe. She headlines on Pride stages and concerts worldwide, spreading her energy and beats to crowds everywhere. Kristine W. recently changed up her sound a bit with a jazz version of “What I Like About You,” proving her dimension and depth as an artist, and still the clubs are alive with the sound of music...Kristine W.’s music! YOU’VE GOT AN AMAZING LGBT FOLLOWING. HOW INTENTIONAL IS THAT? I ALWAYS WONDER IF MUSIC EXECS LISTEN AND SAY “THE GAYS ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS!” OR DOES IT JUST HAPPEN? I never tried to have an LGBT following. It was so unexpected like falling in love. It just happened and I am so grateful for this family that I have been a part of. YOU WERE MISS WASHINGTON 1981 AND STARTED IN LAS VEGAS WITH A POPULAR STAGE SHOW. WHAT TURNED YOU TO A MORE SERIOUS MUSIC CAREER? Most of the labels I was with didn’t want me to be as outspoken and supportive [of the Gay Community] as I was and will always be. I remember being told numerous times by executives (record and casino bosses) that my music and my following was too gay. I couldn’t believe it! Thankfully, since Glee and other mainstream shows with openly gay characters have become so popular, it’s now become hip to support the community. That makes my heart happy. I READ SOMEWHERE THAT YOU BATTLED A VERY LIFE THREATENING ILLNESS A WHILE BACK. HOW DID THAT CHANGE YOU? I got Leukemia in 2001 and battled it for almost three years.

It taught me that we all have our battles in life and we need each other’s support. It also made me a better mother to my two children. They were one and two years old at the time. I also learned that I have amazing family and friends and that God has more for me to do or I would not be here. ARE YOU MOST COMFORTABLE ON STAGE SINGING OR WHEN YOU GET FREE TIME TO BE ALONE WITH YOUR THOUGHTS? I am most comfortable onstage. I think that’s common with children who perform at an early age and especially those who are raised around musicians. It is our safe place where we are in control, or so we think (laughs). YOU MADE A BIT OF A SWITCH TO JAZZ NOT SO LONG AGO WITH STRAIGHT UP WITH A TWIST. DID YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT HOW YOUR FANS WOULD RESPOND? The fans had emailed me since 2000 asking for the jazz album. The letters and emails started coming after Clubland became an underground dance hit with all the jazz flavor and scat. After I looked through the letters in the folder one day I thought, “I’m doing this.” In 2006 we started the project and four years later, it’s here! OBVIOUSLY DANCE MUSIC HAS PUT YOU ON THE MAP, SURPASSING MADONNA AND JANET JACKSON FOR “MOST CONSECUTIVE NUMBER 1 DANCE HITS.” WHAT OTHER GENRES OF MUSIC DO YOU CONNECT WITH, ALONG WITH JAZZ? I would like to do an old school R&B album and a rock project, as well as a cool gospel album. I have sung all styles and I love a challenge. AS YOUR CAREER BEGAN TO PEAK, DID YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON HOW IT WOULD AFFECT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, BEING NOTICED ON TOUR, AWAY FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS? Yes! Being on the road for most of your life you miss out on events, but that is part of being in the service business. I am home during most of the week with my kids and have been room mom, party planner, car pooler etc. So, I’ve

managed to cram a lot into a day with the help of lots of coffee. YOU’VE WORKED WITH SO MANY ARTISTS SINCE THE 90S. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE NOW, PRESENT TIME, THAT YOU’RE INTERESTED IN COLLABORATING WITH? There are so many people I would love to work with! Donna Summer, Al Jaurreau, Tony Bennett, David Guetta, Tiesto, Bono, Michael Buble’, too many. Don’t get me started (laughs). WHAT KIND OF ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT WHO HAS HOPES FOR BILLBOARD STARDOM? New artists should work on their live stage shows, becoming good musicians and business people. It is not enough just to sing anymore. Hits come and go but a great showman lasts. WHO INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE AND CAREER? Strong women that inspire others to do good are who I look to. My Mother, Donna Lee. My other mothers, Dorothy Schoeppach and Tillie Tuls. These are regular people who change lives on the down low. Celebrities would be Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Midler and others who help the planet, animals, children and the less fortunate. ANY TIME SOMEONE NEW BURSTS ONTO THE SCENE, THERE ARE ALWAYS GOOD AND BAD THINGS SAID. DO YOU REMEMBER READING OR HEARING ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT YOURSELF WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED? DID IT SET YOU BACK AT ALL OR DID YOU USE IT AS MOTIVATION TO MOVE FORWARD? When I first got acclaim, most of the rumors were that I was a man because I am six feet tall. I had my crotch grabbed more than you can imagine. I also have a bigger Adam’s apple than most women, probably from blowing my saxophone for so many years. I was always and still am mistaken for a drag queen, especially when I have all my stage gear on. It just happened when I got out of the elevator of the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago. I could hear the couple walk away saying, “I think that might be a drag queen,” (laughs). I’m used to it!

YOU’RE CONSTANTLY BOOKED AT PRIDE EVENTS, LGBT FUNDRAISERS, CONCERTS, AND SEEM VERY ON TOUCH WITH OUR COMMUNITY. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON CREATING THE CHANGE NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE EQUAL RIGHTS, ANTI-BULLYING AWARENESS AND FORWARD THINKING? We have a lot of wrongs to correct on this planet. We have not been good to mother earth or to ourselves. We need to rise up and be better to each other. We need to be more tolerant and loving in all facets of our lives. Fear and hatred creates such toxic energy. Bullying and anti-gay haters are a product of it. We need to educate and raise our kids to love all people, especially love themselves for who they are. We can make the change but we all have to make a little difference in the world every day. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, YOU WILL BE THE HEADLINER IN AN EVENT ON MAY 13TH IN OUR BACKYARD, DAVIE, FL. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? I will be performing my new show May 13th with two of my Vegas dancers in Hagen Park next to Wilton Manors in Ft. Lauderdale. This will be the first show for the summer tour, so come out! I can’t wait to perform what we have been rehearsing. “The Power of Music” always amazes me. Love you all big time!

“WE NEED TO BE MORE TOLERANT AND LOVING IN ALL FACETS OF OUR LIVES. FEAR AND HATRED CREATES SUCH TOXIC ENERGY. BULLYING AND ANTI-GAY HATERS ARE A PRODUCT OF IT. “

Now in its 23rd year, Palace is the first and only gay restaurant/bar on Ocean Drive. Located in the heart of the Art Deco District, Palace is a destination renowned for its legacy of infamous weekend drag shows, Sunday “Brunchic,” luscious libations and mouth-watering burgers. While tour buses often stop to photograph the weekend drag shows, Palace is truly a place to just get away from it all: to enjoy a meal, laugh with friends, enjoy the show and, of course, kick back a few cocktails. And the eye candy passing by is not hard to take! Throughout the years, Palace has been an integral part of the LGBT community, playing a prominent role in support of organizations. As part of its ongoing commitment to the community, Palace is proud to be a sponsor of Aqua Girl and is hosting daily Happy Hour treats from 3 to 6P, May 11-15. Since taking over the culinary reins, Palace chef Aileen “Ely” Conroy has made substantial changes to the menu, adding several healthy choices such as more salads and the ever-popular turkey burger. BY MARIA ESPINAL

Our economy is still struggling and everyone is on a budget. As all of America continues to tighten their belts, the travel and tourism industry is no exception. However, the adjustments of gay and lesbian travelers are not as severe as straight travelers. According to a national survey 2008 conducted by Harris Interactive®, 38 percent of gay and lesbian adults reported they were absolutely certain or very likely to take their vacations as planned that year, compared with 34 percent of their heterosexual counterparts. According to Community Market, Inc, from November 2009 to October 2010, LGBT leisure travel decreased only 1 percent to 3 percent. It’s clear that the LGBT buying power is still a strong decision-maker in any industry. The relative stability in the LGBT travel market is perhaps the reason that the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) is still as active as ever. This month, the IGLTA will host their 28th Annual Convention, Unleashed, on May 10-15 in Fort Lauderdale, bringing close to 500 TANYA CHURCHMUCH MANAGER OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND THE LGBT MARKET, TOURISME MONTREAL PUBLISHER, GIRLPORTS.COM IGLTA CHAIR OF THE BOARD HOW MUCH HAS THE GAY/LESBIAN TRAVEL MARKET SUFFERED BECAUSE OF THE FALLING ECONOMY IN YOUR AREA? We’ve now come to the point where all travel markets are picking up once again as the economy slowly turns around. In late 2009 to mid-2010, there was a slight drop in the gay/ lesbian travel market, but it was much less severe than the overall travel market.

WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE RECENTLY BECOME THE NEXT “GAY DESTINATION” AND WHAT MAKES THEM A GAY-FRIENDLY ONE? Some of the new “go-to” destinations for gays and lesbians include Argentina (especially Buenos Aires), Mexico City, Florianopolis (Brazil), Manchester (U.K.), Stockholm and Tel Aviv (Israel). Oftentimes, it is thanks to a strong outreach by the local tourism board towards the LGBT market, coupled with very progressive local laws in regards to LGBT rights, that attracts visitors. Each and every one of these destinations offers both of these things. THERE ARE MORE GAY-OWNED BUSINESSES IN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY THAN THERE ARE LESSHE -

members to this fabulous city. “We hope this convention really showcases how much IGLTA has grown as an organization. It’s also important to us that they get a great impression of our host city. When we travel to global shows, we find that most people outside of North America aren’t familiar with Fort Lauderdale — our event is bringing in travel professionals from more than 20 countries, from as far away as Japan, India, Australia, and South Africa. The IGLTA convention will definitely raise the profile of the city globally,” said LoAnn Halden, IGLTA Media Relations Manager. So, what about 2011 when we are still coping with the economy? How has the industry changed and better yet, as more and more countries and cities have become gay-friendly spots, what can we expect in 2012 ? We spoke to three women who have been in the travel industry for many years, from Canada to Brazil, about these and other topics. Come along!

BIAN-OWNED BUSINESSES. WHAT WOULD YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT TO? I don’t know why this is. At the same time, as one of the rare lesbians involved in the LGBT tourism world, I can tell you that I know many lesbians who own travel-related businesses, but choose not to become part of the overall “LGBT travel industry.” It seems to me that lesbians often prefer to do things on their own, or they feel like the “gay and lesbian” travel industry doesn’t represent them. I’m trying to bridge that gap so more women will become involved with organizations like IGLTA, because it will only serve to help us all in the end. WHAT SHOULD TRAVELERS BASE THEIR

5/11

4/28/2011, 6:38 PM

CHOICES AND RESEARCH ON FOR THEIR NEXT DESTINATION? I think most travelers should base their choices on a number of different things - personal interest in a destination, word of mouth, and especially articles on websites and in magazines like yours. WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVEL INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS FOR 2012? I think the travel industry will continue to rebound through 2012. I also think that we will continue to see more and more tourism boards courting the LGBT market because they know that generally we travel more, spend more, stay longer and visit during off-peak season (which is extremely important for destinations). What I’m also expecting we’ll continue to see is more direct marketing towards lesbians specifically.

Not services, but we had to be very careful with pricing. We also looked at less expensive programs (self-drives, for example) to offer. WHAT DO YOU THINK TODAY’S WOMEN TRAVELERS ARE MOST INTERESTED IN DOING FOR THEIR VACATIONS? There is as much variety of interests in women and lesbian travel as in any other segment. We had lesbian clients for adventure, for beach relaxation, for whale watching, for city stays. Unfortunately, I think most companies tend to stereotype what they offer to gay and lesbian travelers.

MARTA DALLA CHIESA MANAGING DIRECTOR, BRAZIL ECOJOURNEYS BRAZILECOJOURNEYS.COM

MORE AND MORE WELL-KNOWN COMPANIES ARE MARKETING TO OUR COMMUNITY. DO YOU THINK THEY ARE DOING IT TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT TOWARDS US OR IS IT BECAUSE OF THE GAY BUYING POWER? I think the world is changing because more people are coming out. The more people know us, the more we share our hearts with the world, the more the world will embrace us. I don’t believe discrimination exists when we look each other in the eye. That’s why Sweet goes into the communities we visit and work side by side with the locals. We’re breaking down walls, one funfilled vacation at a time. WHO IS YOUR AVERAGE TRAVELER NOW AND HAVE YOUR DEMOGRAPHICS CHANGED? Our Sweet spot is 40-45. That’s been really consistent since we started in 2008. We have people in their 20s and 80s. We hear a lot that our guests look young. They’re not, but everyone who travels with Sweet is young at heart.

WHO IS YOUR AVERAGE TRAVELER NOW AND HAVE YOUR DEMOGRAPHICS CHANGED? We are not an exclusive gay & lesbian business (although ours is a lesbian-owned company) but we have increased our gay and lesbian clientele share along the years. Amongst these, the demographics are quite similar to our straight clientsmainly couples, from 35 - 65, maybe 50/50 between North Americans and Europeans. HAS THE GAY/LESBIAN TRAVEL MARKET SUFFERED BECAUSE OF THE FALLING ECONOMY? Yes, but I think less so then the straight market. We had a modest increase in numbers of G&L clients at the same time that we had a decrease in straight clients since the crisis of two years ago. HAVE YOU HAD TO ADAPT THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE TO THE CURRENT ECONOMY?

SHANNON WENTWORTH CEO & FOUNDING PARTNER, SWEET DISCOVERSWEET.COM

HAS THE GAY/LESBIAN TRAVEL MARKET SUFFERED BECAUSE OF THE FALLING ECONOMY? It’s hit the whole world hard. We’ve adjusted the number, length and size of the trips we’re offering. We’ve tightened our belts, so we can continue offering amazing vacation experiences for lesbians for decades to come. ARE WOMEN TRAVELING MORE NOW WITHIN THE US THAN OVERSEAS? People want to stay closer to home. Mostly, it’s about cutting costs. WHAT DO YOU THINK TODAY’S WOMEN TRAVELERS ARE MOST INTERESTED IN DOING FOR THEIR VACATIONS? The Sweet traveler wants to have fun and do some good while she’s at it. With all the stress of this recession, people need relaxation more than ever. THERE ARE MORE GAY-OWNED BUSINESSES IN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY THAN THERE ARE LESBIAN-OWNED BUSINESSES. WHAT WOULD YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT TO? Here’s a huge blanket statement. Speaking for every lesbian on the planet, I think lesbians are more practical. They don’t like to leave home, you know, the dogs are there. Gay men have more disposable income and less pets (or less aversion to boarding them). In any case, gay men are more comfortable traveling than gay women. C’mon, ladies, let’s get out and have some fun together! WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVEL INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS FOR 2012? I expect the travel industry to start to expand again. I think a lot more people will be checking things off their bucket lists, traveling with family and looking for meaningful fun. [IGLTA.ORG]

BY ANNA LEPELEY, M.S. PHD (CAND.), CSCS, CISSN

WORKING OUT YOUR VAGINA Do you pee on yourself when you exercise? If you answered “yes,” I’m sorry to hear that. It’s probably hard to find a workout partner (and a girlfriend) that way. All kidding aside, this is actually a natural occurrence among many women who regularly workout. It appears Scandinavian researchers are quite concerned with “young women leaking urine during exercise” and this concern has driven them to conduct a study finding a direct correlation between strenuous exercise and pelvic floor muscle fatigue [1]. I’m also going to assume this is a bigger problem among Scandinavian women and that their gyms are fully equipped and ready with mops at each corner of the facility and next to squat racks. The study consisted of nulliparous (have never had babies) women who were kind enough (and comfortable enough) to allow researchers to stick balloon catheters in their vaginas for obtaining data. The findings found that strenuous exercise weakened maximal voluntary vaginal contraction pressure, therefore causing less control of the pelvic floor muscles that hold your pee in (you know, the ones that tighten up when you’re on a road trip with an urge and the next rest stop is 50 miles away). I’d certainly hope you’re not going to give up exercise. Therefore, you have two solutions: wear Depends or train your vagina like you do all your other muscles (just not in the gym with a spotter counting reps; do it inconspicuously at home or elsewhere [and count in your head please]). This means kegeling, ladies. Kegeling

BY MARISSA COHEN

was invented by Dr. Arnold Kegel in 1948. A Kegel involves clenching the muscles on your pelvic floor. These are the muscles that you use when stopping and starting the flow of urine while peeing. Interestingly enough, there are many devices out there purported to tone, strengthen and stimulate vaginal wall and pelvic floor muscles, massage g-spot and enhance sexual pleasure. I get the impression girls might not use this device as an actual exercise implement and instead use it for the aforementioned purposes, but as long as your intentions are good that’s all that matters! Even if you prefer to do without the devices this is a great exercise you can perform without anyone knowing! You can do it while waiting in line at the grocery store, in class, at work, at church (don’t tell God), meeting your girlfriend’s parents and yes, you can actually do it discreetly in the gym between your traditional exercise reps. You can even hold a conversation during this mysterious exercise but practice ahead of time. Some women may find this exercise too intense or pseudo-anxiety-producing. Some say it is quite a peculiar sensation. The benefits are consistently evident. Kegel exercises will not only prevent you from peeing on yourself and will optimize your bladder control when you exercise, but will also enhance your orgasms and overall sexual arousal. I hope you’ve already started kegeling by the end of this article.

Edited by Candace Walsh and Laura Andre— Whether it’s called “sexual fluidity” or “bisexuality”, Walsh and Andre take on the reality of how women’s sexual identity can change over time. Dear John, I Love Jane explores a longoverdue addition to the coming out memoir. As contributor Michelle Rene writes, “Does love trump orientation? Some days I don’t know. But I believe in [discovering] where a little love and honesty can take you.” Honest, funny and heartbreaking, this is a welcome, refreshing and longoverdue collection which inspires both the gay and straight communities to open our minds. Nominated for a 2011 Lambda Literary Award. Seal Press, $16.95

By Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman—Fifteen years ago, Bornstein’s gender-challenging classic jumped onto the queer publishing scene. Now, Bornstein returns, with the help of Canadian writer and performer S. Bear Bergman, to take on a whole new generation of genderqueers and transfolk. In a world where medical forms still only have M or F checkboxes, Gender Outlaws uses personal essays, photographs, and even comics (“Transfag Robot Manifesto” by Sam Orchard is particularly fantastic) to challenge our ideas of identity. Nominated for a 2011 Lambda Literary Award. Seal Press, $ 16.95

SOY MUJER

PROGRAMACION PORNO

¿SI O NO?

CELEBRATE PRIDE

KEY WEST-STYLE Key West has a lot to be proud of – it recently tied with San Francisco for the title of “Best City for Unity Between Gays and Lesbians,” and it won hands down in “Best City for Unity Between Gays and Straights.” The city and county official mottos are “One Human Family,” and LGBTA leaders work and serve openly. It’s clear that Key West shows its Pride every day, and this is your chance to be a part of the celebration! Key West Pride 2011, June 8-12, offers a variety of events and opportunities for fun that ranges from community-minded to the very adult. This five day celebration includes a film festival, dance parties, drag shows, bike tours, pool parties, water excursions, a street fair, and even a parade down the infamous Duval Street. Key West Pride 2011 features plenty of opportunities for laughter with stand-up and improv performances scheduled throughout the week including comedian Christine O’Leary and the local comedy troupe The Improvables. Headlining Key West Pride 2011 are comedians Michele Balan and Jason Stuart who team-up to create one great show on Saturday, June 11th. (Advance tickets are available at keywestpride.org) The comedians will keep the laughs coming while the clothing-optional parties will keep Key West’s steamy reputation alive and well. A must see, of course, are the annual Pride pageants. These very adult competitions often leave little to the imagination as contestants heat-up the runway in an effort to earn the Pride titles. Miss Pride (men dressed as women) is held at 801, Mr Pride (men barely dressed) is held at Bourbon, Ms Pride (don’t tell the lesbians it’s a pageant) is held at Aqua, and Drag King Pride (women dressed as men) is held at Pearl’s. Whether you are looking for a romantic holiday or place to let it all hang out, Key West Pride is the place to be this year. Check out keywestpride.org for more information on where to stay and what to do during this year’s Pride celebration. Key West Pride is produced by the Key West Business Guild, one of the oldest gay and lesbian chambers of commerce in the country. [KEYWESTPRIDE.ORG] [GAYKEYWESTFL.COM]

SHE SCOPES

WITH THE VILLAGE SAGE

AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19

LEO JULY 23 - AUG 23

Your life finally slows down from warp speed to a more leisurely, and manageable pace. You’ll enjoy de-stressing with loved ones and recharging. Of course you’ll still be your social self. By mid-month, you’ll be ready to rock and roll again, but you’ll have to honor commitments that you’ve made to your significant others, or there will be consequences for perceived domestic neglect. Expect to successfully conclude long-term projects, and to have fresh options for future success.

Use your charm to lead, rather than your brute strength to force others to embrace your ideas. Taking care of business should be your top priority. You can accomplish a lot with this energy and still have plenty leftover to enjoy some of life’s pleasures as well. You have renewed determination to achieve your goals. It’s important that you don’t try to do more than you can actually do or burn the candle too brightly.

PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20

VIRGO AUG 24 - SEPT 23

You’ll be exploring in nearby neighborhoods, making new friends as you wander. You’ll also be re-connecting with family and friends to revisit the past and rewrite a future. Open communication is key. Being willing to listen to other positions with an open mind will ensure more successful outcomes. The anxiety you’ve felt around your finances will ease up considerably as you embrace new ideas to assure your future success. Be careful when projecting future cash flow.

You’ve had so many ideas, and half-started projects that you feel like you’ve been put on hold. Now, the winds of change are blowing the cobwebs out of your head. You would be wise to go with the flow. Be open to developing new business strategies but hold onto your vision. You’ll need to use all of your people skills when communicating your expectations with everyone in every area of your life, but especially with your significant others.

ARIES MAR 21 - APR 19

LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23

You’re determined to increase your marketability and income. While it’s true you have to spend money to make money, you’ll have to use a lot of self-control to stay within your budget. Focus on developing strategies to help you achieve your goals. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted. You’ll have a lot of opportunities to go out and play. Make the most of them by networking yourself. Enjoy the social interaction.

You’ll be taking inventory of your all of your relationships. It’s important to have clear and candid communication about all the important relationship issues. Clearing out the debris of the past should be a priority. Be creative in using what you already have and refurbish whenever possible. You’ll enjoy sharing your brilliant ideas, and listening to the other people’s ideas of what’s possible. Remove your rose-colored glasses before committing to a plan that has no basis in reality.

TAURUS APR 20 - MAY 20

SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22

You’ll need to channel all your ‘bull-headed’ stubbornness into positive expressions of discipline in order to achieve your goals. Compulsive attention to detail will win the day. Focus on following up. You’ll have to exercise a lot of self-control over your temper, impulsive behavior and rash spending. Use this energy for home and self improvement projects and you’ll fuel it into creating something you can enjoy for years.

You’re more concerned with playing well with others and are seeking a better understanding of what makes a good relationship, and a good partnership. Communication is, of course, the key, but you must examine truthfully if you enter into agreements with intentions of honoring your commitments, or not. You’ll find that cooperation works in everyone’s best interest. You’ll have a better time and more quality of life if you become part of the solution, instead of the problem.

GEMINI MAY 21 - JUN 21

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

You’ll become more mindful of how your words, actions, and reactions, impact all of the significant others in your life. It’s important for you to clear up misunderstandings and finish projects before you throw yourself into the new opportunities. You’ll have to mindful of previous agreements. Only then can you determine if your actions were worth the reactions they caused. It’s important to enjoy good times with friends and family and it’s equally important to get enough sleep.

It’s time to get your life in order. You’ve been feeling stuck and stagnant and now you want to hit the floor running. Your basic everyday life is up for re-evaluation. Getting healthier means making an exercise schedule, and sticking to it. It also means exploring some of the clutter in your emotional closet. Examine it before deciding its importance and relevance in your life now. Get rid of unwanted weight and you’ll transform your life.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22

CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 19

You get to do your favorite things while you network yourself. You’ll enjoy throwing the party as much as you’ll enjoy attending all the get-togethers with all of your different groups. Your personal charm will draw new and influential people into your fan club. Remember, it’s often not what you know, but who you know, that winds up making a difference. Don’t allow yourself to get discouraged if things don’t happen as quickly as you’d like. Patience.

You’ll be enjoying home-improvement projects and playdates with like minded-others. You have mastered the art of multi-tasking, so you can enjoy guilty pleasures, without the guilt. Be aware of see-sawing energies causing see-sawing emotions. The only thing you can actually control is your own reaction. You’re determined to get to where you want to be in the future and you’re equally committed to improving and enjoying the here and the now. Balance.
