W.C. Fields once said that, when it came to showbiz, you should never work with kids or animals. In my house, we have two Airedales and a Cockapoo. The oldest of the trio, the 14 yearold Airedale is, well 14 years-old. It’s pretty much like having a 91 year-old around the house. He does his business where and whenever he wants, no matter how many times you take him outside, because in his mind, he is outside. He perches himself in a comfortable spot, watches everything and has a habit of talking to himself. The youngest, the five year-old Airedale, at 65 pounds, is convinced he is still a puppy, and a small one, at that. His little Aquarian brain is sure that everything in the house is his; he gets very jealous of the other dogs and would continuously run from end-to-end of the house, if we let him. Oh and he eats underwear and jeans. The middle one, the seven year-old Cockapoo, exists in her own little world. She too is sure that all attention in the house should belong to her, as well as every sock. In addition to this trio of torment, as of three months ago, we now have a baby in our lives—a beautiful, 15 month-old baby girl, who is probably the happiest, most animated baby I have ever seen. The problem with happy and animated is that, even 3 months later, every smile, giggle or goofy, “Oh no,” face still stops me in my tracks, making me forget whatever was in my head right beforehand. I used to just forget things because I had old lady brain (at 46). Now, I forget more things and misplace my keys, phone or glasses at least once a day, because I have old lady with a baby brain (at 46). That’s right, you guessed it: My brain cells completely survived all that weed from the 80’s, but are now being eaten by the dog bowl and baby bottle-full. Not only that, but it’s almost impossible for the woman I adore and me to just have 15 minutes of one-on-one time, without a dog barking, peeing on the rug or running into the room with a sock or pair of underwear in their mouth, or without the baby doing something adorable like barking, pointing at the pee on the rug or running into the room with a pair of socks or underwear in her mouth. But I gotta tell you: I love every crazy minute of it. I may not have a clue where the hell I left my car keys, but I laugh out loud more now than I ever have in my life and so does the woman I love. We laugh at a dog who talks to himself. We laugh at the baby. We laugh at each other and we laugh at ourselves. The kids and the animals may be constantly stealing my scenes, but at the end of the day, it’s still the feel good movie of the year! See you next month.

in the news Kicking Off HRC’s Celebration of National Adoption Month 2012 It’s been 17 years since President Bill Clinton declared November “National Adoption Month,” a time to focus on finding permanent families for children and youth in foster care. As HRC kicks off their 2012 National Adoption Month celebration there are 104,000 children and youth in need of a “forever” family and, shockingly, qualified LGBT individuals and couples continue to face discrimination and bias in their pursuit of becoming one of those loving, forever families. HRC’s All Children—All Families initiative has helped to chisel away at those barriers and to build bridges between the thousands of prospective LGBT adoptive parents and the thousands of children who are waiting in foster care. Since launching in 2007, they have engaged over 100 agencies in implementing our LGBT-inclusive policies and practices, and thousands of adoption professionals have attended our workshops, webinars and downloaded our Promising Practices guide. In recognition of National Adoption Month HRC has just published the 4th edition of this guide with new and expanded content on all aspects of welcoming, supporting and affirming LGBT adoptive families. For those of you who have thought about adopting, you can take a first step today by reading HRC’s resource on key questions to ask before you start the process. And check out our map of agencies officially participating in All Children – All Families. Visit hrc.org
JC Penney honored in Texas for its support of LGBT community JC Penney took some heat from anti-gay group OneMillionMoms, a subgroup of American Family Association, when it hired Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson earlier this year. Then they were in the group’s crosshairs again for first featuring lesbians in its catalog then later two gay dads. Despite being threatened with boycott, the chain held firm and did not change any of its advertising materials. Now, instead of being boycotted by its foes, the company was celebrated by its friends. The US retailer was honored on Saturday, November 3rd in Dallas, Texas, for its support of the LGBT community by Black Tie Dinner Inc., a nonprofit organization that raises funds for LGBT-supportive organizations. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as well as organizations that collectively provide services to more than 135,000 individuals annually in the North Texas area. main website

Supreme Court to decide on Prop 8, DOMA cases in late November The U.S. Supreme Court has indicated that it will consider whether to grant review in Hollingsworth v. Perry (formerly Perry v. Brown), the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8. The Perry case, along with several cases challenging the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), will be considered at the justices’ private conference scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20. Enacted in November 2008, Proposition 8 eliminated the fundamental freedom of gay and lesbian Californians to marry. DOMA, which was enacted by Congress in 1996, nullifies the marriages of gay and lesbian couples for all purposes of federal law. The Perry case was filed on May 22, 2009 in federal District Court on behalf of two California couples, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo. On Feb. 7, 2012, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a landmark ruling upholding the historic August 2010 decision of the federal District Court that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional. On July 30, 2012, the proponents of Proposition 8 asked the Supreme Court to review the Ninth Circuit’s judgment. A request for Supreme Court review, known as a petition for a writ of certiorari, is only granted upon an affirmative vote of four justices. Should the Court grant review, the Justices will go on to consider whether Proposition 8 violates the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. If the Court denies review, the February 2012 decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that struck down Proposition 8 is made permanent, ending four years of marriage inequality in California. The Supreme Court is expected to release an Order List with its decisions on cases it has granted or denied review from its Nov. 20 conference by Monday, Nov. 26.

to Host this Year’s Women’s White Party in miami beach
If you saw the latest season of The Real L Word, you know some about Lauren Bedford Russell, 26 and native of La Jolla, CA—including her relationship with Hunter Valentine’s lead singer and She Magazine’s August cover girl, Kiyomi McCloskey. If you missed it, we would like to introduce you to Lauren, who is not just someone who was cast from the streets, but a lesbian business entrepreneur whose professional success was not capitalized on the momentum of the reality show, but rather was self-made off screen through hard work, dedication and the clear understanding that accessories are just as important as the clothes you put on and can make a statement beyond fashion. With degrees in Business and Gemological studies, as well as a year sketching for Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry, Lauren has since been more than romancing the stones. She has successfully delved into highend jewelry designing under the marquee of her own company “Lyon Fine Jewelry,” launched just last year and already known for its hugely popular celebrity endorsed commemorative bracelets called the “Equality” and “Rock The Vote.” Celebrities rocking their equality bracelets include: Adam Lambert, Jason Mraz, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Perez Hilton, Cyndi Lauper, Wilmer Valderrama and Lance Bass among others. Lauren’s goal is not only to stress the importance of accessorizing, but also to evoke a deep sense of identity and intrinsic desire via the striking design in each of her pieces, which is what gives clients a signature look. Centering on black diamonds, black jade and black rhodium-plated silver and gold, her inventive designs are meant for all genders. Lauren prides herself on using only conflict-free gemstones and produces all her jewelry in New York City and Los Angeles. We recently spoke with Lauren as she gets ready to come to South Florida to host the Women’s White Party Week events. You are definitely my new favorite cast member. When I first saw your photo before the last TRLW season started, you seemed a bit intimidating. But it makes a bigger statement to see how opposite of that you are. Have you gotten that a lot from other people?
Thank you so much! That means a lot since we have a great group of people in the cast. I do hear that at times from viewers of the show, that they are surprised by my personality and expect something else, maybe not as nice. But hey, I think the point of doing this show for me was to knock down various stereotypes and show people something that might make them think a little outside the box. I strive to be a very well-rounded person but grounded, so I am glad that came through. On a similar subject, a lot of people saw me in the promo picture with cleavage showing a bit and pink hair and imagined someone else maybe more feminine or girly. But in reality I wear combat boots and leather jackets, and mainly all black. My pale pink hair was a more of a ‘90’s messy rocker look than a pinup girl look in all reality, but maybe that didn’t come through until people watched the show. Were you a fan of the series before? How was the casting process for you?
Yes! I had watched the first season and part of the second at that point. I was sitting at dinner with my friend (musician Amber Tisue) and she told me she was going to submit an application to be on the show and urged me to do it with her. I love her; she has an amazing personality, very cool woman. So, when she said she was doing it I told her I would, too. I startSHE - 16 - 11/12

ed out with an email, and three months later after going through the casting process, I was selected. It was interesting because I found myself very nervous as I went further and further. I am not a “fame seeker” in the least, as my friends will tell you. They talked me through it for weeks because I was conflicted with what may happen should I get selected. But at the end of the day my reasons for doing the show won out over my prior reluctance about the “fame” factor. what did you enjoy the most about it?
I really think this past season was many steps above the previous seasons. We had a cool factor of bringing in the city of New York, and a touring rock band in Hunter Valentine. We also had, I think, some more interesting drama and relationship dynamics that we hadn’t seen before on the show. I think as a whole the show keeps getting better and better. What did you learn about yourself while doing the show that perhaps you were not so aware of?
Oh wow, I learned so much about myself not only during filming, but after watching the show, and since it aired. What started as a blind leap of faith turned into an unforgettable experience that I will really always feel grateful for. I didn’t realize the show would actually change me for the better, and I have to thank my incredible fans for that. I was so focused on being single and working on myself, I had no idea I had it in me to actually open my heart to love. What would you say to those who feel TRLW doesn’t reflect the lesbian community as a whole because they don’t see themselves represented?
I would say it is extremely tough to show all aspects of our multi-faceted community but we do a pretty good job. It’s hard to compare this show to other shows and what they do, and it’s hard to compare the lesbian community with any other community. Producers do their best. Is there a question you are just sick of answering about the series?
Yes! Well during filming, from the producers and others it was “are you friends with benefits with Amanda?” and “What is the difference between LA and NYC?” It’s funny, the Amanda question stopped obviously, but the LA vs. NYC questions keep on rolling from everyone! We just celebrated Coming Out Day last month. You have said that your family has been very supportive of you. How was your coming out?
I told them all at once in the same room! My
“What started as a blind leap of faith turned into an unforgettable experience that I will really always feel grateful for. “ mother was very shocked because she had no idea. But as soon as she saw how happy I was and much I had been hiding (laughs) she got used to the idea and literally became P-Flag mother of the year. She and the rest of my family have been incredibly supportive and proud. If you could produce an all-star lesbian reality show, who would you cast and what would it be about?
I think I would make it about helping women come out. Featuring Ellen, Dr. Drew, Chelsea Handler, Britney Spears and Tim Gunn. Is that too much to ask? (Laughs) Moving along to your jewelry line… I have always wanted to go to jewelry school (which hasn’t happened yet) so I am excited for you! When did you become interested in it?
My father (Financial writer/author Richard Russell) has always had a passion for jewelry and he passed that long to me from a young age. After college, not knowing what I wanted to do, my sister (actress Betsy Russell) urged me to work at a jewelry store until I figured it out. Then it began…. What is the designing process like for you, where do you start?
I either do one of two things. I sit down with my sketch book and just go at it. Or I am inspired by an idea or an object. Once I have the sketch completed, I walk away from it and move onto the next sketch. If I still love the design after a while, I talk to my production people about costs and materials. How did you decide on the materials you will use for your jewelry?
When I was designing the collection, the price of gold was headed way up but it was not where it is now. I wanted to use only gold, but it became clear that the finest metal I should use was silver to keep prices down. But I still keep gold as an option for each piece on my website. Obviously for custom pieces I use gold most of the time (wedding rings, etc).
Which is your favorite piece so far?
Definitely La Nouvelle-Orléans Ring (Black Jade Cross Over Curb Chain Ring with Black Rhodium Plating) because it took me so long to design and I love the design so much. Why did you want to go so high end with your jewelry?
I really wanted to produce a serious professional line of jewelry. Something that you could wear now and also pass on to your grandchildren. I believe in investing in something that will last forever instead of buying a bunch of trendy pieces that you throw away after a year. What has been the hardest part as a business woman and most gratifying moment so far?
Everything you have to do to build a business and a website is difficult, but you take it step by step and get it done. If I had to do it all over again I would have partnered with someone and shared the work! But no, I’m glad I have my business and it’s all my own. The most gratifying moment has been my work with my charity bracelets. I absolutely love that aspect of my business. We are just hours away from electing our new President. What concerns you the most when choosing who to vote for?
What concerns me first and foremost is basic human rights. I am flabbergasted that we still live in a country where not every single person gets the same rights as the next. We all pay the same taxes. You should be able to visit and make decisions for your partner in life of 30 years if he or she is in the hospital just the same as their own mother can. You should be receiving the same pay whether you are a man or a woman. It’s completely mind-blowing. Later in November you will be hosting the Women’s White Party events. Do you have any expectations?
I am so excited to host! I have never been to this party, and I think it looks amazing. I have been to Miami a few times, yes. Once for a “girls weekend” with some friends, and another time for Art Basel with Amanda. I love it so much and am so happy to be able to return and with Hunter Valentine no less! What’s ahead for you and your jewelry line?
I am still working on getting my new lowerpriced line put together. I have about 5 pieces so far, and I need 20! My next charity bracelet will either be for bullying or for animal rights. Follow Lauren @lyonjewelry, @1LaurenRussell & lyonfinejewelry.com

In several recent studies, roughly 1 in 3 women reported low or no sexual desire. Other studies have found even higher percentages, particularly women over 50. If you’re in libido limbo, take heart. There are many ways to regain the sexual excitement and desire of youth--no matter how old you are. Here are nine strategies to get you started.
1
Add super-libido foods to your diet
The following foods and supplements are unusually rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals that have unique potential to promote your sexual well-being: flaxseeds; hemp seeds; chia or pumpkin seeds; coconut oil; pomegranates; blueberry, acai, or mangosteen juice; cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli sprouts; green tea; and shiitake mushrooms.
get sex-enhancing exercise
2
Exercise has many beneficial effects on hormones that promote high libido. But balance is the key. You want to get the benefits of both aerobic exercise (exercises that make you sweat and raise your heart rate) and re-
sistance exercise like weight lifting--at least 20 minutes of each, 3-4 times/week. You can also use the Chinese principle of yin and yang to achieve balance. Examples of yin, or mellow, exercises are walking, canoeing, swimming, slow ballroom dancing, or gentle hatha yoga. Yang, or rigorous, exercises might include mountain biking, running, high-impact aerobics, tennis, or heavy weight lifting.
3
detox your home for better sex drive
Toxins in our environment wreak havoc on our libido. When your body is not bombarded with chemicals it can’t easily process, it doesn’t have to expend so much energy flushing out toxins--and you’ll feel your energy and sex drive increase. Go through every cabinet, drawer, and shelf in your house and swap chemical cleaning products and personal care products for all-natural versions. Throw out nonstick Teflon pans, and dump all plastic containers in the recycle bin.
cleanse your body from inside out
4
Do a 21-day dietary cleanse and you’ll feel the difference in your libido. For 21 days, eliminate all gluten and sugar from your diet. For grains, consume only rice, quinoa, amaranth, tapioca, and buckwheat. Eat a multicolored raw salad every day. Up your vegetable intake -- particularly cruciferous vegetables. Avoid
dairy and egg products. Limit your protein to organic poultry, wild salmon, and beans and legumes. Minimize your fruit intake. Every day
drink at least 12 ounces of water with lemon juice added. Dry brush your body once a day before you shower or bathe, and try to visit a sauna at least twice a week to sweat out toxins.
5
supplement to support your midlife libido
For midlife women, low libido may be tied to how efficiently your body metabolizes, or breaks down, estrogen. The following foods and nutritional supplements will noticeably improve your body’s ability to make friendly estrogen and eliminate “unfriendly” estrogen: seaweed; cruciferous vegetables; DIM (short for diindolylmethane), which is a cruciferous vegetable extract; calcium d-glucarate; and liver lipotropic formula, a blend of herbs and nutrients that helps your liver break down toxin more efficiently and supports your friendly estrogen metabolism. Visit www.shemag.com to read other ways to get out of libido limbo.

I vividly remember, years ago, the first time I tuned in to PBS’s programming late at night and started watching a show focusing on LGBT issues. It was a pleasant surprise to see myself reflected in the show, as I was coming to terms with my own sexuality. That show was In the Life, which, over the years, has been a beacon of light and hope to thousands of lives. Brainchild of John Scagliotti, the producer of Before Stonewall, the initial concept of In the Life (ITL) was developed as a variety show, a vehicle to represent the diversity of the gay community. First titled Out on TV, the program was finally renamed In the Life, from the Harlem Renaissance euphemism “in the life,” meaning a prostitute or a homosexual. It was on June 9, 1992 that ITL premiered on six public television stations with comedian Kate Clinton as the first host. After 200 episodes, thousands of hours, 12 staff members and many LGBT issues addressed, ITL gets ready to go off the air due to funding problems this December 2012,
showing a retrospective of our 20 years on the air. After that, In the Life will take a new, webbased direction. According to their 2011 financial report available on their website, the Total Public Support & Revenue was $1,445,605 vs. Total Expenses $1,807,741. We recently spoke to Ellen Carton who, after the departure of Michelle Kristel, joined In The Life Media as the interim executive director in July 2012 and JacGares who has been part of the staff since 2007 and serves as the series producer. Over the years, what were the turning points for the show?
Ellen: In the Life evolved and transformed several times throughout our 20 years on public television. We began airing at a time when LGBT people were virtually invisible in the media. The few real LGBT people that appeared on television were relegated to the spectacle of daytime talk-shows. So, in our early days as a variety show, visibility was our primary objective. This was especially important for
LGBT Americans who felt alone, who were not connected to the larger LGBT community and had never seen people like themselves on television. We evolved into a newsmagazine with the belief that real stories about LGBT people are our greatest asset in the fight for equality. In those years, In the Life featured everyday LGBT people making a difference in their communities, coming out stories, stories about LGBT people living in rural areas. We highlighted movement leaders, artists and LGBT intellectuals. Our coverage of the AIDS crisis was especially important. Our switch to a guest-host format allowed us to celebrate the many LGBT public figures, especially entertainers who were finally coming out, or coming out as allies, in the early 2000s. Guest hosts included Rosie O’Donnell, Martina Navratilova, Ani Difranco, Janeane Garofalo and John Amaechi, to name a few.. Are there any stories that stand out or touched you in a big way?
Jac: I am especially proud of the interview I
SHE - 20 - 11/12

conducted with Sirdeaner Walker for our “Bullycides” segment, which was used as an educational media tool by the Anti-Defamation League and the Department of Education. Also, interviewing and spending time with subjects like Ja’briel from “Injustice at Every Turn,” a report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, which was later used by the Department of Labor, and also our continuing coverage in Uganda against the infamous “Kill The Gays” bill were real highlights for me. From Kate Clinton as your original host to Katherine Linton in front of camera, what role did female staff members play in the show as a whole and its evolution?
Jac: One of the best parts about working at In The Life Media was that women have held powerful positions within the structure of producing the show as well as the organization. I will always consider it a privilege to have been the series producer for In the Life. Young, urban, white men have always been disproportionately represented in what little media coverage the LGBT community gets. More than any other news source, In The Life Media has told stories that reflect the experience of our community’s most underrepresented people and marginalized populations. In order to tell authentic, important stories about the rest of us - women, those on the economic margins and people of color - we know that those voices have to be represented on our staff. Women have played an important role in our organization since its founding and have held leadership positions throughout our 20 years on public television.
ly in television news and media. A majority of Americans, including our president, support marriage equality. Studies show that visibility is the driving force behind this rapid shift in cultural attitudes toward the LGBT community. As the media organization that pioneered LGBT visibility on television, we believe ITLM played a significant role in this historic progress.
What impact do you feel In the Life has made in mainstream media and how they portray our community to their viewers?
Ellen: In the Life pioneered LGBT visibility on television. We led the way. I’m not sure that network television would have come as far as it has in terms of featuring LGBT people and characters if it weren’t for ITL taking that first, revolutionary leap. Much has changed since our programming first premiered. LGBT people now figure prominent-
Having the episodes online has made you available worldwide. What have you learned from other LGBT communities outside the U.S.?
Ellen: That we have a lot more work to do and that international stories about the LGBT experience throughout the world remain largely untold. ITLM’s upcoming online hub will provide an opportunity for LGBT people from around the world to share their stories. This is especially exciting because, historically, international stories have been prohibitively expensive for ITLM to cover. We look forward to hearing from LGBT individuals from every corner of the world. I understand funding is the biggest reason as to why the show is coming to an end. How much can you tell us of what’s ahead for In the Life and its new direction? Will any funding remain?
Ellen: We are still in discussions with a successor organization and will shortly announce ITLM’s future. Stay tuned! As I reflect on my time with ITL, I am reminded of that famous quote by Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” For air dates, to watch previous episodes or for more information, visit www.itlmedia.org. SHE - 21 - 11/12

macy gray With a new movie, a new album and a big European Tour about to kick off, you would think Macy Gray would be in a spin. But, quite the opposite, she’s as cool as ever! As you can imagine, I was pretty excited to have the chance to talk to super-sexy Macy Gray about the big things ahead.... You’re getting ready to go on tour now. Is it hard being on the road, away from everyone, or do you take the whole family with you? I leave in about a month, mid-November and it’s a European tour I’m kicking off with. Yeah, I used to bring the whole caravan full of people, family, the kids, but they’re a lot older now, and can’t miss school, so I have to leave them home this time. so it’s like a vacation for you? (Laughs) No, no, I love being home, I’m a home body. Tell us a little about Talking Book... It’s the first remake of Stevie Wonder’s famous album, Talking Book from 1972. How does that work? Did Stevie have to give you the okay to do that? I’ve talked to him a few times before, but no, I didn’t ask about this. How it works is, when you do a cover, you have to be sure to use the whole song. You can’t just take samSHE - 24 - 11/12

ples of it, because then you do have to get the artist’s permission, if you hack up a song and use pieces or chords like they do in hip-hop music. But, I’m doing all the actual whole songs. Wow, how awesome for him, when he hears that, because it’s such a tribute to someone when you love their music so much you want to do it all again, you know? That’s what I’m hopin’! I hope that’s clear and that he likes it. Every time I listen to “Beauty in the World,” I get this super fun vibe, like it was so fun to make, what type of atmosphere do you like to create when you’re in the studio? I usually make records with people I know really, really well, so we always have a blast in the studio. When do you feel most inspired to tackle a new music project? I know it sounds stupid, but I don’t really have a process. If I go into the studio, I write. I write songs. I’ve never really been one to write at home. You know what it’s like in a studio? It’s like a cave; you can block everything out and really get focused. For me, I mean. Like going to the office. “Gettin’ up and going to work today...” (Laughs) Yeah! Like that, exactly! You’ve dabbled quite a bit in acting. Any plans to continue? Yep, yep, in fact Paper Boy comes out the first week of November- I’m in that with Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConnaughy and Zac Ephron. I love it, love acting. You’ve always had such a big, strong LGBT fan base. When did you first notice, and how does it make you feel that they connect so much with your music? I do, yes, and when I first started out, girls would throw their bras on stage! I didn’t even know what that was all about. (Laughs) But, yeah, I picked up on that a while ago! I think a lot of us connect to your music because of you, because of what you’re singing about, and because you’re you. Don’t get me wrong, though, the underwear be-

ing tossed on stage could mean something a little different, but I think the LGBT community loves and connects with your spirit. (Laughs) That’s alright! And thank you! I don’t know what it is exactly. Probably all different reasons because everyone is different to begin with. People just like what they like and I’m okay with that. How important is change when it comes to making new music? You know, I try and just do what I feel. When I try new things, or try to do things the way someone tells me to do it, it just doesn’t feel right, so I try and just do what I feel. I’m 43 now, and I went through a thing where I was kind of bored with myself. So we made some changes to my clothes, to my show, and I keep finding ways to excite myself again. That’s important to me. With this being election time, what are the important things that you look for when making you’re learning about the candidates, what they stand for and they’re platforms? Well, I think you try to look for the most sincere. I mean, they’re politicians and they’re going to lie. I don’t know. It’s like when you see someone on TV, or meet someone for the first time, you know right away whether you like them or not. So, it’s who you like, really. Everyone is different. For me, I guess, I look for the one I hope is the sincerest. www.macygray.com SHE - 25 - 11/12

SHE - 31 - 11/12

Women May Display Different Stroke Symptoms Than Men
Pandora Events’ La Descarga • October 2006
Imagine that you are out shopping with your mother, girlfriend or sister and she suddenly gets severe hiccups, shortness of breath, or palpitations. Maybe you even notice sudden face and limb pain, nausea, chest pain, or general weakness. Could it be a stroke? You think that some of these signs don’t fit common stroke symptoms, but you might not know that women can display different symptoms than men. According to the American Stroke Association, five warning signs for both men and women can include: • Numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg – especially on one side of the body • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Severe headache with no known cause However, some of the most common complaints among women without any of the five warning signs can be loss of consciousness or fainting, difficulty breathing, pain, nausea, and seizures. “Initial symptoms of a TIA usually last for a few minutes to one hour and can be similar to other stroke warning signs,” said Dr. Rzucidlo, According to Eva M. Rzucidlo, MD a vascular surgeon from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Females make up 60 percent of all people who have strokes, so don’t secondguess the situation. Call 911 immediately if you notice someone having any signs of stroke. Many patients can be treated and helped with a FDA clot-buster medication, if used during what is known as “the three-hour window” after their first symptoms. Your quick response may help one of the more than the 100,000 women under the age of 65 each year that have a stroke and reduce long-term disability. “Unfortunately, the first sign of carotid artery disease could be a stroke,” noted Dr. Rzucidlo, “so women also should be have their carotid artery (an artery in the neck which supplies blood to the brain) checked periodically by their physician who will listen to the blood flow through a stethoscope. Vascular screening methods are painless and noninvasive tests, and include ultrasound exams or Doppler pressure studies...” Individuals 55 years of age or older with cardiovascular risk factors such as a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, or known cardiovascular disease may also benefit from preventive screening for vascular disease. Appropriate screening examinations in high-risk individuals include ultrasound scan of the aorta to identify aortic aneurysms; ultrasound scan of the carotid arteries to assess stroke risk; and blood pressure measurements in the legs to identify PAD and risk of heart disease. Strokes can affect anyone at any age but there are risk factors for stroke that are even more important for women under 55. Also at risk are females with autoimmune diseases such as diabetes or lupus; those who have had more than one miscarriage who may be at higher risk for blood clots; and those having a thick waist and high triglyceride (blood fat) level. Post-menopausal women with a waist size larger than 35.2 inches and a triglyceride level higher than 128 milligrams per liter may have a five-fold increased risk for stroke. So, make sure your blood pressure and diabetes numbers are under control. Be active, have a healthy diet, and watch your weight, especially around your waist area. Limit alcohol consumption and don’t smoke. For more information visit vascularsociety.org SHE - 34 - 11/12

Instead, make plans with friends and family to just go out and have some fun. Don’t try to push for changes now as that might undermine your security. Explore new business tactics and opportunities.
Your focus is on your home and family. Seek to make necessary changes in order to build a stronger foundation, both on the material and emotional planes. Take this opportunity to rid yourself of unwanted clutter from the past. Clean your closets as well as your contacts in your address book. Trust your gut rather than your head or heart.
pisces feb 20 - mar 20 The planets are sending you mixed messages. Confusion surrounds your business plans as well as your personal life. Double check everything before the fact, rather than try to fix things after they have gone awry. Be careful to maintain a positive, optimistic attitude even in the face of frustration and obstacles. Try not to mix money matters with romantic matters. Don’t push your agenda just yet. Take no risks.

You’re more introspective than usual as you try to balance your natural inclination for independence and freedom, with the desire to break out of restrictive situations like committed relationships and/or jobs. Risk taking is not favored now, nor is severing ties with those whose control you challenge. Instead, find common goals and compromise your way to win-win solutions.
Take off your rose-colored glasses to successfully navigate the energies the planets are giving off. Reevaluate your life, especially your financial situation. You need to make a realistic budget and stick to it. Put more thought into how to improve cash flow and make the most of what you do have. Avoid power struggles. Do your own thing without making a fuss.

Relationships of all kinds cause you to rethink how you share with others. That includes resources and assets, worries and hardships, as well as power and control. It’s as important to control your emotions as it is to balance your budget. This lesson is about how you handle adversity and stress. Strive to find ways to compromise and avoid emotional reactions. That won’t solve anything.
It’s all about what you need and want and what you expect from others, as well as what you’re willing to do for them. Achieve more cooperation by using charm to cajole rather than harshness to bully. You get to re-invent yourself. Distance yourself from past mistakes—but only if you actually transform yourself. Network your skills and services, especially your new attitude, whenever possible.

You’re torn between focusing on what you need to do to improve your financial situation, what you have to do to improve your health emotionally and physically, and what you want to do to improve your love life. This can easily be accomplished by improving your communication with all concerned. That includes practicing the art of compromise by actually listening to the needs and wants of your significant others.
Your patience is being tested by the significant others in your life as you rebel against manipulation. You’re current situation is bringing up a lot from your past for final examination. Circumstances are forcing you to reflect on your need for independence and your need for codependence. Fight the urge to run away. Instead, identify your problems and address them with all involved.

The planets are once again bringing challenging situations to see how you’ll handle it. Keep your emotions under control. Don’t do anything that might undermine your current situation. Don’t say anything in the heat of the moment that might invite trouble. You’ve been unhappy with the status-quo and desperately want a change. Now is not the time to put freedom above security. Compromise to enjoy both.
Saturn has entered your house of friendships and business income. Take a close look at what and who no longer serve you, and how you interact and react to the significant others in your life. You’ve been having anxiety about how you can fulfill your commitments and financial responsibilities. Be realistic about your budget and projected cash flow. Be open to accepting a little help from your friends.
Conflicting energies could have you wasting yours by spinning around and around and not accomplishing very much. Miscommunication leads to major misunderstandings. Be sure you have your facts right before you try to defend your position or your reaction. Don’t resist forced changes in your life; embrace new ways and means of achieving goals and improving your quality of life.
