President’s Message

Introducing our newest HBAA member benefit:

BUILDERS HEALTH EXCHANGE Our new Builders Health Exchange site is designed exclusively for HBAA members to provide you with the information you need to help select the health coverage options that are best for you, your family and your company. Visit www. HBAA.org and select Builders Health Exchange from the “About HBAA” drop-down menu. If you need assistance logging into the site, contact Candi Stroh, HBAA Web Specialist, at 1-800-745-4222 or candistroh@hbaa.org.

It is hard to believe we are already in the second quarter of the year. February was a very busy month with the International Builders Show and the HBAA ABLE Conference. There seemed to be more exhibitors and attendees at the IBS® this year. General Stanley McCrystal was the speaker for the opening ceremonies. He gave an outstanding talk on leadership and how to adapt to various situations using leadership skills. We also attended a great concert by Pat Benatar at the Spike Party the last night. When you recruit members into our local Association, you receive spike points where you can attend the concert at IBS® at no charge! The ABLE Conference was also great. During the conference Governmental Affairs Liaison Howell Lee arranged a meeting with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and several of our local members where we discussed various issues that affect us. This is another example of how our Governmental Affairs Committee is working for our members. Many of you were involved in the 26th Annual

Building, Home, and Remodeling ShowSM. A huge thanks to Lynn and her staff for the time and effort they spent in coordinating the event. This is one of the bigger shows in North Alabama promoting the building industry and the staff and all the exhibitors make it the huge success it is each year. Thanks also to everyone who volunteered their time to work at the ShowSM. We had great attendance again this year with people waiting in line to go through before the doors even opened. Hopefully the large attendance means buyers are ready to make a move on our product and will translate into more business for us all!

An exciting event that is just around the corner is the Spring Tour of HomesSM. Our community looks forward to this each year where they can go through the homes and see what our builders have to offer. It offers great exposure to our builders. The homes will be opened April 26-27 and May 3-4 and will feature the Remodelors Idea Home being built by Bret Slaton, Slaton Custom Homes. An upcoming event sponsored by the HBAA is the Foundation Golf Classic on May 8 in Greenville at the Robert Trent Jones-Cambrian Ridge course. It is a great way to mingle with builders and associates from all over the state while giving you a day off your normal work day. The good news is you don’t have to be a golf expert to come out and have a great time! Shine up your clubs and get your swing on. Being a member of the HMCBA has so many benefits including participating in the above events. Our General Membership Meetings and other events provide members an avenue to talk with other professionals in our industry that understand the ups and downs of the business and what we are all going through. Think of the possibilities if each member just recruited one member during 2014. I don’t think that is asking too much! Not only would we double in size but we would be a strong force where our local elected officials and state representatives would listen to us and take notice. Imagine what all we could get done on both a state and local level that would better the building industry for all of us. The Governmental Affairs Committee could really see the issues they present being implemented. A definition of recruit is someone who supplies members. So let’s get out there and talk about all the benefits the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association has to offer and recruit!

Left to right: Bill Pippin, President & CEO of Huntsville Utilities; Ronnie Boles, HU Board member; John Allen, HMCBA 2013 Green Building Council Chairman; Larry Denman, Supervisor, Huntsville Utilities; and George Moore, HU Board member.

A State Legislative Resolution was presented to Huntsville Utilities at their March Board meeting. For the first time all three inspection departments in Madison County have come together to implement the State Energy Code in an effort to create a consistent energy inspection process. In addition to city and county leaders, the HMCBA would like to extend our sincere thanks to the three inspection department directors whose cooperation and dedication to this effort made this day possible, Matthew Danner, Madison County, Randy Cunningham, City of Huntsville and Jimmy Morgan, City of Madison. Great job gentlemen!!

This year’s Building Home and Remodeling ShowSM was expected to be a huge success and it was! I hope you were able to stop by over the weekend to check out the 200+ companies that showcased their latest products and services! I’d like to say thank you to all who participated in the ShowSM by either exhibiting, sponsoring, attending, and/or volunteering! So many of you stepped forward to help out and the Association really appreciates each of your contributions towards making this the quality event we have all come to anticipate over the last 26 years. I know we say it all the time, but these events would not be possible without supporters like you! With the weather changing and the sunshine staying out a little longer each day, it’s time to start heading outdoors. Our first outdoor event will be the West Family Member/Guest Bass Tournament - it will be held on April 18, 2014 at Goose Pond Colony. Launch positions will be determined by the order your registration is received, so sign up now! Also, Bob Wallace Appliance will be giving away a Traeger Grill to one lucky participant! This is always a great event and we hope to see you there. After we wrap up the West Family Bass Tournament, it will soon be time to start planning the Chandler Family Golf Tournament. Be on the lookout in your mailbox and inbox for more information on this. On behalf of the Associate Council, we appreciate your support and look forward to a great spring and summer. See you at the Bass Tournament!

Lighting for Life

Legrand Adome Under-Cabinet System

Lighting trends are forever changing. Like jewelry- there are seasons for trends, and the ones that are timeless pieces that we will always love. Lighting is a way to show your sense of style. In the past several years the focus has been on being more efficient. We have seen those changes evolve in the bulbs we now can choose from; LED, CFLs, and Halogen as opposed to the standard incandescent light bulb we were all accustomed to. Manufacturers have also put an emphasis on lighting that is more task oriented. Are you in the market for some simple and efficient under cabinet task lighting? Maxcor is a perfect solution. This LED under cabinet light is not only economical, but is environmentally friendly and long lasting- up to 50,000 hours. That’s 10 times longer than halogen lighting. Their cool operating temperature eliminates extraneous heat on the counter tops and cabinets. Plus they provide a nice, beauty enhanced light, in a warm and natural (2700 K) color. These lights come in four different finishes: Black, Nickel, Oil-Rubbed Bronze and White. They are also easy to install, with lengths ranging from 8 to 40 inches.

Hinkley: Gatsby Collection (top left), Hinkley: Fulton Collection (right), Capital: Ellis Collection (bottom left)

If that pile of devices and chargers on your kitchen cabinet makes you want to scream, take a look at Legrand Adorne’s under cabinet lighting system. This multi-purpose system allows you to have every outlet out of site, so that backsplash you wanted as a focal point can be just that. The Legrand Adorne Under-Cabinet Lighting System brings an array of modular components that swap out so easily, you’ll want to reconfigure whenever the mood strikes. From speakers and smart phone docks to lighting and outlets, there’s a world of possibilities to choose from with these high-tech, highly convenient building blocks. Fixtures this year are as unique as ever. The nostalgic lamp and fixtures in the retro industrial style are very in. Clear or mercury glass fixtures that expose the light bulb are very trendy with more choices in light bulb shape and filament. Lighting fixture finishes glimmer brightly in polished nickel and chrome and become more refined and understated in a softened brushed elegant return to brass. Industrial steel and galvanized metal add a different interest. Sparkling brilliance in crystal stands out in new more modern styling. Many of the new fixtures are incorporating geometric designs and patterns, such as spheres, cubes, and quatrefoils. Questions about this article or the products mentioned? Please come see us at Inline Lighting!
