This year, the award was presented to Bret Slaton of Slaton Custom Homes Inc. Two awards for recruiting new members for the Association are awarded to a builder member and an associate member. Kenneth Maze, 2015 HMCBA President, (right) presented Lynn Corder, HBAA President, a gift of appreciation for installing the 2015 Senior Officers and Board of Directors members

HBAA President Lynn Corder installed the 2014 Senior Officers which included Kenneth Maze, Maze Home Builders LLC, as President; T J Meers, Meers Construction, as 1st Vice President; Sherry Childs, Huntsville Lumber Company, as 2nd Vice President; Byrne Turner, Vintage Construction Inc as Treasurer; Scott Lang, Park Supply, as Secretary; and Gig Robinson, Harrison, Gammons & Rawlinson, PC, as Barrister.

Kenneth Maze, President

Sunshine has returned and another winter is behind us, it’s a cycle Mother Nature provides. It seems our building industry also follows a cycle and it’s like we’re slowly coming out of a long winter that’s had its challenges. But just as temperatures rise and the days get longer, the housing market too is looking bright. With home prices nationwide trending upward once again, the consumer confidence this year is at its highest level since 2007; home owners’ equity up in the past 3 years; mortgage rates hovering near historic lows; employment gains are more solid and consistent; and economic growth continues to improve. As new businesses continue to relocate to our communities, our infrastructure continues to improve and our school systems consistently rank among the nation’s best. 2015 certainly looks promising for our building industry.

President’s Message

While expectations are high for this year, let’s congratulate some individual accomplishments from the January Installation of Officers and Awards Banquet. Congratulation to Builder of the Year recipient Bret Slaton; Associate of the Year recipient Pat West; and New Member of the Year recipient Webco Inc. And for recruiting new members, Builder Big Spike was Bret Slaton and Associate Big Spike was Teletha Ledfors. This was a seated dinner event with guest Lynn Corridor, HBAA President, who installed the 2015 Officers. As a member you are encouraged to attend this and all the membership meetings.

The IBS (International Builders Show) certainly continues to be a destination to get inspired, gain some knowledge, and perhaps a competitive edge. During opening ceremonies speaker John Gruden encouraged us to invest in ourselves. His 6 points were: 1 - Accumulate knowledge every day; 2 - Stay on top of self-motivation; 3 - Don’t lose your enthusiasm; 4 - Execution daily; 5 - Be prepared for adversity; and 6 - Keep raising your bar. The theme this year was “All Homes Start Here” and that’s the message over 55,000 attendees heard throughout the three day event. From opening ceremonies, show floor conversation to education sessions, building industry professionals were reminded that it all starts

with them, and that Home is the Foundation of Family Life, Communities and Economic Growth. The state board meeting held in Montgomery during the ABLE conference was eventful when Governor Bentley made an appearance, addressing us on his proposed tax bill, and answered questions from our members.

Despite some uncooperative weather as our 27th Annual Building, Home and Remodeling ShowSM was setting up; the ShowSM was a huge success. Sorry about the Sneak Preview Party; it was just not possible under such conditions. Given the circumstances, the loss of valuable set-up time, road closures, etc., Executive Director Lynn Kilgore, Events Coordinator Theresa Kennedy and the rest of the staff stepped up and kept the ShowSM on schedule. This show is a big part of our association and it’s made possible by your help, whether you’re an exhibitor, sponsor, speaker, volunteer or an attendee, a big thanks to all for participating. In mid May, the West Family Member/Guest Bass Tournament takes place at Goose Pond Colony-Lake Guntersville. I fished my first tournament there last year and this will become an annual event for me. I hope to see you on the water as this fun filled event continues to grow. The Spring Tour of HomesSM this year will be April 18-19 & 25-26. With new home sales predictions, this year should be very rewarding to participating builders. No President’s message would be complete without touching on the importance of membership. If you’re reading this you probable already realize the benefits, but chances are you know many in the building industry who are not members. Perhaps you could encourage others to join. It’s a local, state and national membership with unlimited benefits from making lifetime connections, gaining invaluable education, to accessing the latest industry information. Membership keeps you up to date on economic, business, regulatory, legislative and other issues. This year’s theme is “The Amazing Race to Membership!” and Chairperson Russ Wilson is doing an outstanding job keeping us all focused on each mission of the race. So let’s all join the Race to Membership! Believe in yourself with courage to be successful.

Kenneth Maze 2015 HMCBA President 8

New Remodelers Council Mission Statement Adopted on January 28th 2015, it states:

“The Remodelers Council is dedicated to supporting the professionalism and integrity of the remodeling industry through member educational programs, public awareness, promoting ethical business practices, and the exchange of information and ideas, creating value for our industry and homeowners.”

New Remodelers Council Logo Look for our new logo, designed courtesy of Lansing Building Products; it is a great logo updated and fresh for 2015. The Remodelers Council membership is growing and new members are always welcome. If you are a remodeler or you sell products or services to remodelers, you need to join the Remodelers Council today!

February Lunch & Learn

Our first Lunch and Learn was held on February 11th with Chip Carden, Director of the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board

Chip Carden discussed the current requirements for Remodelers license in Alabama and discussed several possible changes in the law to create a “level playing field” for remodelers who abide by the rules and have the required license, insurance etc. and are constantly undercut on bids by unlicensed and unqualified remodelers. This issue was brought to light by TV WHNT-19 when a local woman was left without electricity, water and sewer due to the work of an unscrupulous remodeler who took all her money and did very little work. What made it even worse was the work that had been done failed inspection, thus causing the loss of electricity, water and sewer.

Building Home & Remodeling ShowSM

The Remodelers Council participated in the Building Home & Remodeling ShowSM, distributing palm cards with Remodelers Council member names, company names and contact information to attendees. I want to thank our members who manned the booth during the ShowSM: Ginny Terry, Nancy Hinger, Sophia Moore, Justin Click and Jeff Moore who worked all three days of the ShowSM. Thank you for your service to the Remodelers Council! A charity drawing was help at the Building Home & Remodeling ShowSM for a custom made dog house. The dog house was built by former Remodelers Council Chairman Al Juarez and the materials were donated by Sherry Childs of Huntsville Lumber Company. The Remodelers Council sold tickets for $1.00/each and raised $262.00 for “A New Leash on Life.”

Recruiting & Retention

With a total of 52 new members already, our year of recruiting and retention is off to an oustanding start! To achieve our new member goal for the year, we need the help of every member working together. I know we can do it. We especially need each of you to encourage your employees to join HMCBA as an Affiliate member. This is a wonderful opportunity to get them involved in the Association.

R E C R U I T

HBAA Membership Benefits

As a HMCBA member, are you aware of the many benefits you receive through Home Builders Association of Alabama (HBAA)? Remember - when you joined your local Association, you were automatically enrolled as a member of HBAA and NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) - that’s three memberships in one. Are you taking advantage of the Builders Health Exchange, the Alabama Homebuilders Self Insurers Fund, Builders Risk Insurance, or the Member Rebate Program? For more information on these outstanding beneifits and how they can put money back in your pocket, please visit www.hbaa.org.

Retention Calling

Have you joined us for Retention Calling yet? I’d like to take a moment to recognize HMCBA member, Leigh Jones of Wayne’s Environmental. As part of the 2014 Retention Calling Promotion, Leigh was entered into a drawing for $500 cash - she received an entry into the drawing each time she attended a retention calling event. The cash was given away at the January Installation of Officers Dinner. This year, we will be giving away $500 cash again. To be eligible to win, you simply need to attend a retention calling event, and you’ll automatically be entered to win. For each time you attend, you’ll receive one entry. We also give away $50 cash, on the spot, each month during Retention Calling. Come join us, make a few calls, have a free lunch, and maybe win some cash!

Leigh Jones, Wayne’s Environmental

Regulatory Affairs Update ABPAC

Your HMCBA has been very successful in the last couple of election cycles. A large part of our success is due to the ABPAC funding available to contribute to pro-business, progrowth candidates. HMCBA’s goal for 2015, set by HBAA, is $42,700 and the BuildPac goal is $5,662. This is an off-year for elections and the window of opportunity your Association has available to reload and get ready for 2016. HMCBA has an 80% member participation rate in the voluntary dues check off program but our goal is to increase the participation rate. Please participate in the voluntary $30.00 dues check off and to those who already contribute through the voluntary dues check off, THANK YOU!

Current Issues before the Governmental Affairs Committee

1) State Legislative House Bill number 241, HOA (Home Owners Association) legislation 2) City of Madison ordinances (2) on Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) to obtain their ADEM permit for the City of Madison. 3) Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) new flood maps and the phasing out of the National Flood Insurance Program. 4) Development of a master plan for a

Madison County sewer system, be it public, private or a combination of the two. 5) Federal issue with NAHB, the HMCBA, at the request of the National Association of Home Builders, (NAHB) submitted comments on the Environmental Protection Agency’s new Ozone Air Quality proposals which would impact Madison County and make it more expensive and cumbersome regulatory wise to develop a subdivision or to build a house. 6) Federal issue in conjunction with NAHB, excessive levels of formaldehyde in manufactured laminated wood flooring. The only flooring manufactured tested thus far is Lumber Liquidators and the problem is isolated to only their products manufactured in China and only for the past four (4) years. Formaldehyde levels exceed CARP 2 levels. For additional information go to the NAHB website, log in and go to the “search bar” at the upper right hand side of the home page and type in: Lumber Liquidators. For additional information from NAHB Staff, contact David Jaffe at 1-800-368-5242 extension 8317. 7) The HMCBA was approached by another pro-business group and asked to endorse the position of appointing a Madison County School Superintendent vs. electing the County School Superintendent. The Board of Directors voted to remain neutral on this issue.

100K Club

By popular demand, the HBAA is conducting another 100K Club drawing for $1,000 per week and the grand prize of $10,000 which was won by our own Russ Wilson last year. HMCBA’s goal is to sell 117 tickets to meet our goal by HBAA and receive half the proceeds to help fund our local campaign contributions in 2016. Ticket cost is $200 per ticket. If you would like to help meet our ABPAC goal please contact Howell Lee at the HMCBA office for details. The Governmental Affairs Committee is here to serve you, our members. We understand that most of our members don’t have the time to engage in issues that affect their business on a daily basis. We all have business, civil and family obligations that consume all our time every day of the week and that is why the Governmental Affairs Committee and HMCBA Staff focus on these issues on a daily basis. If we failed to do so, your cost of doing business and your ability to conduct business would be negatively impacted and would cost your business much more in fees, paperwork and regulatory hoops to jump through. If you took on the task of fighting these barriers to doing business or were forced to pay someone to represent you, it would cost 10, 20, or 30 times the cost of your yearly dues to HMCBA which also includes your yearly dues to the Home Builders Association of Alabama (HBAA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Your yearly dues are the best deal in town! Remember we always have your back!
