President’s Message Another new year is here and how quickly they seem to come and go! Our Association leadership, volunteers, and staff worked very hard during 2012 and were justly rewarded at the HBAA Convention. The Association won Presidents Awards for Best Educational Series, Best General Membership Meeting for the Chili Cook Off, Best Service to Members for the Building Home & Remodeling Show and Building Home & Garden Show, Best Governmental Affairs Program, and Best Communication to Members. Additionally, we were awarded the overall Presidents Trophy for Large Associations. We should all be proud of these awards! A special congratulations is extended to Steve Steele, Steve Steele Custom Homes, for being awarded the Remodelor Of The Year Award by the Home Builders Association of Alabama. I truly believe that 2013 will be a good year. I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal, “Home Prices Hit a Milestone – Growing Demand, Shrinking Supply Buoy Housing Market – ‘Tide Has Changed’”. The article by Nick Timiraos basically stated that home prices are on track to notch their first yearly gain since 2008. While we have weathered the storm better than some parts of the country, this is good news for our industry across the nation and locally. We must keep our optimistic spirit as housing is the economic engine of this great country and continues to be the dream of Americans – home ownership. We are the lucky ones that help fulfill that dream by building homes which owners can be proud of. As builders, carpenters, suppliers, trades men and women we leave a wonderful legacy for our children and grandchildren – not many professions can show the fruits of their labor for years to come. This year will be very busy year for your Association as we continue to monitor regulatory issues that affect

our industry every day. Additionally, we will work hard to produce top notch consumer shows that promote YOU and the building industry – all you have to do is participate and take advantage of the opportunity. Our first consumer show for the year is the Building Home & Remodeling Show scheduled for March 1 – 3 at the Von Braun Center. We are celebrating our 25th anniversary of this Show which is known as North Alabama’s premier home and building show. Booths are currently on sale with only a few remaining so don’t hesitate reserve your spot any longer! Networking events are available throughout the year with our monthly socials, bass tournaments, golf tournaments, committees, councils, educational seminars, etc. I urge you to get involved to get the most of your membership investment. Not only will you meet new friends, you will find an avenue to learn and share business strategies. Membership is the lifeblood of the Association and I hope you will become involved in the recruitment and retention of members. Our strength lies

in numbers and together we can make things happen in the regulatory and legislative arena, whereas, individually we are a lone voice in the dark. If you do business with someone that isn’t a member, please ask them to join today. Our Membership Services Coordinator, Lori Worcester, can provide you with information on the advantages of being a member which you can share. Of course the best membership tool is you sharing what the Association means to YOU and YOUR business. Join us in our membership program – you may be the grand prize winner of a new mini iPad and/or other items throughout the year. I also encourage you to Do Business With A Member! I look forward to working with each of you and plan to make 2013 a great year for our organization. I wish you all a successful and prosperous new year! As always, be purposeful with your days,

Bret Slaton 2013 HMCBA President

HBAA President’s Trophy & Awards Remodeler of the Year 2012 HBAA President Todd Slyman congratulates 2012 HMCBA President Bret Slaton (pictured left) for the first of six times for the awards the Huntsville/ Madison County Builders Association received at the recent State Convention in San Destin, FL. Every year the Association competes with other builders association of similar size statewide on projects and events they produce. For 2012 the Association submitted for five separate awards and won all five awards. They were: 1) Best Educational Series, 2) Best General Membership Meeting for the Chili Cook Off, 3) Best Service to Members for the Building Home & Remodeling Show and Building Home & Garden Show, 4) Best Governmental Affairs Program, and 5) Best Communication to Members. Not only did the Association win these awards, it also won the overall President’s Trophy for large associations. Congratulations HMCBA!! Steve Steele of Huntsville was named the Home Builders Association of Alabama (HBAA)’s Remodeler of the Year for 2012 at its Convention at the Grand Sandestin in Sandestin, Florida. Steele (pictured to the left), the owner of Steve Steele Custom Homes, LLC, has been a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association for the past 26 years. He served as HBAA President in 2011 and has won multiple Alabama Remodeling Excellence Awards from the HBAA. The Remodeler of the Year award recognizes a remodeler member who has shown outstanding service to their local and state associations, their community and the remodeling industry as a whole. In November, the Association decided it was time for a landscape facelift. After being at this location for 14 years, it was felt that the landscaping was somewhat overgrown and needed to be replaced. Ledford’s Landscaping agreed to undertake this task. As you can see from the pictures of “Before”

* Before *

* After * and “After,” the work has been completed and the Association has a whole new look. Thanks Ledford’s Landscaping for a job well done!
