President’s Message

I would like to offer a huge thanks to the staff of the HMCBA. As I am now working more closely with all of you, I realize what a wellorganized and well-run organization we have. Hats off to all of you for being such a top notch team of professionals!

Thanks to our outgoing President, Bret Slaton, for serving a two-year term. Our Association received some incredible recognition at the State Board meetings under your leadership. Great job! Thanks also to the Nominating Committee and the Board for providing me this awesome opportunity to serve in 2014 as the President of the HMCBA. I appreciate the confidence you have placed in me and realize I have some huge shoes to fill! I recently attended a Christmas Party at the new home of one of our pre-sale customers. As I was taking with our customer, I mentioned I am the incoming president of the HMCBA. He responded that he didn’t know the home builders did anything. His comment made me realize how little the general public knows about the great things the HMCBA does for its

members and our community. It gave me an opportunity to give my “elevator talk” about the benefits of being a member of the HMCBA. I encourage each of you to develop your own “elevator talk” as you never know when you will have the opportunity to share with someone during simple conversation. The building industry is our livelihood and most all of us are affected with what goes on with it.

The Governmental Affairs committee plays a huge role in the building industry. They stay informed and up-to-date at both a local and state level and know what issues are being discussed and considered, what potential changes to building codes and energy codes are upcoming, what issues are being discussed in the legislature that would affect the housing industry and our bottom-line. The money raised by some of the fundraisers during the year by our Association also goes to ABPAC for their lobbying efforts that help each of us and our individual businesses. Howell Lee also does an amazing job with our Association’s Governmental Affairs committee. Talk with Howell for more information on what this committee does for you and your business on an on-going basis and for information to attend and get involved at the monthly Governmental Affairs Committee meetings. Don’t forget the upcoming Building, Home, and Remodeling ShowSM scheduled for March 7-9. It is a great way for our members to showcase their businesses and what they have to offer. There are still some booths available – just contact Theresa at the HMCBA for information (Theresa@buildersassn.org). Keep in mind that the HMCBA is YOUR organization and its existence is based on its members and their commitment to keeping it active. Let’s get the word out about our great organization. Look for opportunities to recruit and make sure you know the benefits of joining so you can tell them. When they see how passionate you are about the HMCBA, they will want to join and be a part of it also. If you don’t know what the Association is doing, get more involved! Contact Lori (lori@ buildersassn.org) and she will help you find your place in the Association. We are always looking for volunteers! I am excited about continuing to move our Association forward in 2014. I look forward to working with each of you and hearing your ideas on how we can make our Association even better than it already is. Please feel free to call me at any time. Get prepared for an awesome year!

VALENTINES GET-A-WAY RAFFLE - Al Juarez, New Life Homes

National Remodelers Council Dues Increase

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) voted at the Fall Board of Directors meeting to increase the national dues for participation in the National Remodelers Council. After a full and complete review of the services and publications the NAHB Remodelers Council offers, the Remodelers Committee determined that our local Remodelers Committee should recommend to our Executive Committee and Board of Directors to withdraw from the National Program in 2014. With the national dues increase, the local committee dues income would decrease to $15.00 per year from each member that would have prompted a dues increase for our Remodelers Committee. The local Remodelers Committee felt that a dues increase would actually lose committee members for HMCBA. Our goal is to increase the membership and services provided by the Remodelers Committee to our members in 2014.

2014 Educational Programs

In an effort to have the funds available to provide the best educational and informative programs, the Remodelers Committee is holding a VALENTINES GET-A-WAY RAFFLE. The drawing will be held on January 24th for Valentine’s night at our local Embassy Suites Hotel, Club Level, with dinner for two (2) at Ruth’s Chris Steak House located in the lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel. Tickets are only $5.00 each or a real deal, 5 for $20.00. Tickets are available from Remodelers Committee members and at the HMCBA office. Please participate and help your love life and the Remodelers Committee.

Remodelers Committee Chairman for 2014

I appreciate the Remodelers Committee’s trust and faith in my leadership and I will be the Remodelers Committee Chairman again in 2014. I take your confidence in my leadership seriously and pledge to make the 2014 Remodelers Committee stronger and better. If you are involved in remodeling, either as a builder, supplier or other services for our Remodeler Committee members, please give us a chance to help your business prosper.

Educational programs will again be presented for our member’s benefit. We ask that your ideas and concepts for educational Lunch

Speaking of the monthly membership events, I hope you were all able to stop by for food, fun and fellowship at the HMCBA Open House on December 12.

- Sid Pugh, Re/Max Alliance

We wrapped up the year 2013 with 113 new members, thanks to the dedication of our loyal members who worked hard to recruit. On behalf of HMCBA and the Membership Committee, I’d like to specifically thank Jimmy Jones for chairing the Membership Committee in 2013. Jimmy did a superb job leading the efforts of the Committee and I thank him for his continued support as I transition into the position. As a HMCBA member, you’re aware of the many benefits you receive. Are you taking advantage of your complimentary ticket to most of the monthly membership events? The networking venue the HMCBA provides gives you the opportunity to make the connections you need to thrive in this industry.

I’d like to take a moment to recognize HMCBA member, Sheila Marr of Southern Valley Services. As part of the third quarter membership promotion and because Sheila joined HMCBA during the third quarter, she was entered into a drawing for a $400 gift card to Costco plus a (1) year membership to Costco. This membership prize was given away at the November Chili Cook Off and Sheila walked away the lucky recipient! Lastly, I strongly encourage you to offer a warm welcome to all of our new faces you’ll be seeing around - thank them for investing in HMCBA and share with them your journey as a member! With that being said - remember, DO BUSINESS WITH A MEMBER! Our members take their pledge to “do business with a member” seriously and membership means more opportunity, more collaboration and more referrals. I’m looking forward to an oustanding 2014 and am honored to be your Membership Committee Chair.

Please welcome our new members that joined the Association in September, October & November, 2013.

CNN Money suggests some outdoor kitchens can fetch a 100 to 200% ROI. Homeowners continue to embrace the trend of maximizing outdoor living space, whether it’s an outdoor kitchen or patio living room with a fire pit. New construction and remodels should include plans for exterior hardscapes, especially when you consider the return on investment, not to mention the added customer appeal. Nicely designed landscapes and outdoor spaces add a great deal to curb appeal. There are so many solutions to fit any budget and need. Products like permeable pavers or gravel walkways control runoff and help areas where drainage is a problem. As a natural extension of the home’s ground floor, a patio significantly expands a family’s living and entertaining space. It provides a perfect gathering spot for guests and family who will be drawn from indoor dining areas to this enticing space. The party is always in the kitchen, so design outdoor areas wisely. Consult with experienced designers and installers. Too often we see outdoor living spaces that are not lifestyle functional. To remain competitive you have to stay ahead of the building trends. Now is the time to be thinking and planning your outdoor living spaces if you want to be ready for spring. Without erecting the traditional four walls and roof, outdoor living spaces can be easily created for large or small homes, and everything in between. Enhancing an outdoor space with hardscapes adds value and can be adapted for multiple uses.

Regulatory Affairs Update

Governor Bentley visits HMCBA to Discuss Housing Issues

The HMCBA was honored to have Governor Robert Bentley come by its office and meet with their Senior Leadership in October. The Governor sat down at the table with the HMCBA leadership and discussed issues that touch the residential construction

industry in Alabama. Governor Bentley discussed at length his efforts toward work force development and informed the group that he has appointed HBAA Executive Director Russell Davis to his Work Force Development Advisory Board. This was welcome news to the Association Leadership as this will give the residential building industry a “seat at the table”. The Governor was well versed on the issues of work force development in the construction trades, both residential and commercial. The meeting lasted well over an hour and Governor Bentley answered questions on roads, the state economy, health insurance issues, and many other issues facing the building industry.

State Energy Code to be Implemented in January 2014 After 15 months of negotiating, developing and tweaking, we are in the final planning stage for implementation of the State Energy Code. For the first time in recent memory, all three inspection departments will utilize the

same format on this energy code program. Your Association has conducted three classes over the last couple of months to educate builders about the process and logistics of the code. Builders will be able to utilize Huntsville Utilities or any HERS or BPI certified inspectors/verifiers to issue the certification of approval on new construction jobs. This will accomplish our major goal of creating a consistent method of certification in all three jurisdictions of Madison County. On September 27th your Association held a press conference (pictured below) attended by Mayor Tommy Battle of Huntsville, Mayor Troy Trulock of Madison and Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong. The press conference was covered by the local CBS and NBC television affiliates, the Huntsville Times, Madison County Record and al.com. A national construction news group, Construction Dive, also carried the story. The press conference was held to announce the culmination of a year’s worth of work with the three jurisdictions to develop this inspection plan. This historic day would not have happened without the great leadership we enjoy in Madison County. A huge THANK YOU goes to all our elected leaders, inspection departments and Huntsville Utilities for making this happen and providing the leadership to help our builder members. A special thanks goes to John Allen, Chairman of our Green Building Council, for his leadership and tireless efforts on behalf of our Association. Also our thanks go to Larry Denman, Bill Pippin, Jay Stowe and the entire Board of Directors at Huntsville Utilities. This is truly a historic first for our Association. As with all roll-outs, there will be a few glitches along the way, but please be patient during the first few critical months and know that everyone involved is trying their best to do the right thing as exhibited by our local leadership. It is truly refreshing to see our

local leaders work so very well together for “the greater good” of Madison County. Our New Homes Program will save tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars that would have otherwise been spent on equipment, vehicles, manpower, etc. to carry out this unfunded mandate by the State. It is truly a win-win for everyone involved.

2014 Statewide Elections 2014 is a statewide election year with all our local legislative delegation up for election, along with several local races for county positions. We will begin the interview and endorsement process in the spring. YOUR HELP IS AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to have a successful election of probusiness candidates that we will endorse. Please support our slate of candidates which will be interviewed, vetted and endorsed by your Board of Directors. WE NEED BOTH VOTES AND DOLLARS TO REACH OUR GOAL IN 2014. For those who question whether their membership is worth the cost and time, just realize the huge savings you have enjoyed because of staff and volunteer efforts on your behalf. We understand your time is the most valuable commodity you have, so your HMCBA staff, volunteer committee members and Board of Directors fight the good fight on a daily basis so you can operate your business with less burdensome regulations. 99% of the governmental affairs work we do is behind the scenes and the issues that would jeopardize your business never see the light of day, are never seen in the newspaper nor on the broadcast media because we have stopped these issues.

FEMA National Flood Insurance Update NAHB is fighting to delay or curtail the FEMA national flood insurance premium increase and extension of flood fringe areas state wide. We are hit particularly hard in the Madison and Limestone county areas due to the many rivers, creeks and streams that abound in our region. This will be a major issue for homeowners.

ADEM Spot Inspections Our Builder/Developer members are seeing a sharp increase in ADEM spot inspections on subdivisions and individual lots within a subdivision. We are working with our state HBAA to curb the number of fines imposed Press Conference Attendees: (L to R) Dale Strong, Madison County Commission Chair; Troy Trulock, on our members through education about City of Madison Mayor; Tommy Battle, City of Huntsville Mayor; Randy Cunningham, Director, City of the process and the Huntsville Inspection Department; Jimmy Morgan, Director, City of Madison Inspection Department; logistics of carrying Jay Stowe, COO, Huntsville Utilities, Bret Slaton, HMCBA President; Larry Denman, Huntsville out the required Utilities Community Relations Superintendent; Larry Durham, HMCBA Governmental Affairs Chair; and John Allen, Green Building Council Chair actions from ADEM. 8

The lunch took place at 11:00 a.m. at the Association office. Taking over the office kitchen, members of the Associate Council worked vigorously to prepare quite the spread – several of the Associate Council members even showed up bright and early at 8:00 a.m. to begin grilling. From grilled chicken to gouda grits to homemade banana pudding, everything prepared was exceptionally delicious. A wonderful time of fellowship was had by all in attendance.
