President’s Message

Thank you, fellow members, for this amazing opportunity to serve. I can only hope each of you has had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Outgoing President Mark Rovere has done an outstanding job! From me, staff, and all of our members (1040+ strong): Thanks Mark. In my tenure as president for 2015, I hope to continue the professionalism of our past presidents with a purpose to protect the American Dream of home ownership through advocacy, education, and professional development. The mission of our Association is to “Support its members by promoting the building industry and improve the quality of life in the communities it serves”. Out of 800+ Home Builders Associations across the nation

with over 144,000+ members, we are the 11th largest Association within the National Association of Home Builders. HMCBA is not just members strong; we participate and are often rewarded for our involvement. At the 2014 Home Builders Association of Alabama Convention our Association brought home six awards including Best Governmental Affairs Program, Best General Membership Meeting, Best Education Series, Best Communication to Members, Best Service to Members, and Best Public Relations program. Our very own Building, Home, and Remodeling ShowSM has become a trademark in our community and is just around the corner on March 6-8, followed by the Fall Home and Garden Show in August. Both shows are a great place and opportunity to brand your company or product. The 2014 Spring Tour of HomesSM included a Remodelers Idea Home on Homewood Avenue, and the 2014 Parade of HomesTM highlighted the Showcase Home at The Meadows of Hampton Cove. Congratulations to the builders and associates that made these events a success! I would like to encourage YOU! to get involved - it’s the best way to get the most of your membership, while expanding your opportunities in the housing industry. As we

know this is a changing market from the way consumers shop for homes, to the way they are built and purchased. Things trending yesterday are gone today; a lot of business models have had to adjust and change to find their place in today’s market.

We too are changing. You can find events and what’s coming up by visiting www.buildersassn.org, or like us on Facebook to stay in touch. There were numerous “Lunch and Learns” last year and many more scheduled for 2015. This is a great way to gain some knowledge and do a little networking, while having lunch with friends and colleagues. Often these events are sponsored by member businesses. Other exciting events already on the calendar are a Houzz seminar on January 27, a special guest performing at the Building Home & Remodeling ShowSM on March 6-8, and other events being implemented and scheduled for the year ahead. I can assure you our staff is working hard to keep a busy agenda for our members while staying on top of local, state and national issues to protect the way we make our living. Our Governmental Affairs Committee is a strong arm of the HMCBA and ultimately has benefited all in the housing industry, members and non-members alike. There seems to always be a proposal or legislative bill being considered on the local, state, or national level; or issues on how a code is being interpreted; or a new fee, tax, or permit placed upon our backs ultimately increasing the price of housing. This committee and staff monitors and works with officials and legislators to ensure a level playing field for our members. So as the year begins, I encourage you to challenge yourself: recruit a new member, volunteer, participate in an event. It’s a very rewarding experience to be part of such a great organization. 2015 is here and, again, I am honored to serve as your president. I wish you many good memories, prosperity and a successful new year.

Kenneth Maze 2015 HMCBA President

Association Partners with Manna House During Holiday Season This Christmas, the HMCBA partnered with the Manna House to provide canned goods for our community. The Manna House is a 501(c)3 Public Charity that provides food assistance to those in need. They are supported by contributions from individuals, churches, civic groups, and businesses. While some food is donated and locally grown, most is purchased for their distribution programs for feeding the homeless, senior citizens, and moms and kids-in-need.

Mark Rovere, 2014 HMCBA President, presents Fran Fluhler (left), Executive Director for Manna House, with a $500 check. 8

Our members collectively donated an abundance of canned goods PLUS over $500! With HMCBA’s donation of $500, the Association was able to give this wonderful organization over $1,000 during a much needed time of the year!

Upcoming Events

The Remodelers Council has planned an active schedule of events for 2015, including 3 to 4 Lunch & Learn seminars for both Council members and the general membership. If you have any topics of interest you would like to submit for the Lunch & Learn schedule, please let us know as your input is important in the subject matter covered by these seminars. The Remodelers Council will play an active part in the annual Building, Home and Remodeling ShowSM in March. The Council will construct a dog house to be raffled at the ShowSM. Proceeds will benefit area animal shelters. Huntsville Lumber is working in concert with the Remodelers Council on this charity project by helping with the material for the dog house. The annual Red White and Bar B Q ABPAC fundraiser will be held in the Spring this year with some new wrinkles for the competition, along with new prize awards.

Welcome New Members

Welcome to our new members of the Remodelers Council! A number of members have joined the Remodelers Council during the last 6 weeks. We are glad to have new members with new insight and ideas to share. New members and existing members are the life blood of the Council and keep our Council relevant to the ever changing Remodeling industry.

New Meeting Date & Time

The meeting day and time for the Remodelers Council monthly meetings will be at 2:00pm on the last Wednesday of each month, except in December when the Remodelers Council does not meet.

Public Relations

The Remodelers Council Steering Committee continues to work on ways to educate the public about doing business with a Remodelers Council member. Discussion had focused on NAHB certifications for Remodeler members and other continuing education programs on lead paint mitigation, energy efficient measures to help clients reduce their energy usage, practical passive energy saving practices and more maintenance reducing remodeling materials. If you are involved in the Remodeling sector of the industry, please join us and help grow the Council and grow your business together!

A New Year...

with new beginnings is upon is! I don’t know about you, but for me, 2014 certainly flew by. Thanks to the dedication of our loyal members who worked hard to recruit, we wrapped up the year with 245 new members. On behalf of HMCBA and the Membership Committee, I’d like to specifically thank Sid Pugh for chairing the Membership Committee in 2014. Sid did an outstanding job leading the efforts of the Committee, and I thank him for his continued support as I transition into the position.

3rd Quarter Membership Promotion

I’d like to take a moment to recognize HMCBA member, Wendy Lee of Jeff Benton Homes. As part of the 2014 third quarter membership promotion and because Wendy worked hard to recruit new members, she was entered into a drawing to win a 50” Vizio flat screen television. This membership prize was given away at the October Board of Directors Meeting and Wendy walked away the lucky recipient!

Do You Know What Your Benefits Are?

As a member of HMCBA, are you aware of the many benefits and discounts available to you. Did you know that HMCBA has three conference rooms available for you to use? Did you know that you receive discounts through Geico, Verizon, UPS, Lowes, and many more? Are you taking advantage of your complimentary ticket to most of the monthly membership events? The networking venue that HMCBA provides at these events gives you the opportunity to make those important connections you need to thrive in this industry. Speaking of the monthly membership events, I hope you were all able to stop by for food, fun and a little Dirty Santa at the HMCBA Open House on December 11.

Welcome Our New Members

Lastly, I strongly encourage you to offer a warm welcome to all of our new faces that you’ll be seeing around - thank them for investing in HMCBA and share with them your journey as a member! With that being said - remember, DO BUSINESS WITH A MEMBER! Our members take their pledge to “do business with a member” seriously and membership means more opportunity, more collaboration and more referrals. I’m looking forward to an outstanding 2015, and I am honored to have been chosen to serve as your Membership Committee Chair.

The Sales and Marketing Council had a jolly good time at their last event of 2014 on December 8. There was great food, tacky sweaters galore, fabulous giveaways, networking and fun contests!

Trevor Cole with The Design Center at Across the Pond made an appearance as Santa Claus! Did we mention all the creative tacky sweaters?

Happy New Year!

Another year has come and gone and passed us by. Thanks to the many who volunteered their time and efforts, 2014 was an extremely successful year for the Associate Council. Between our bass tournament and golf tournament and the two shows, we kept ourselves busy. As you embrace a new year, I would first like to wish all of you a prosperous 2015. We may not know exactly what this year holds, but one thing is for sure, your Associate Council plans to make it a GREAT YEAR! I am honored to serve as the 2015 Chair of the Associate Council and I look forward to working with each of you to continue moving this great Association forward.

Upcoming Events

The Associate Council is gearing up for the many upcoming events that will take place throughout the year. The first event will be the annual Building Home and Remodeling ShowSM on March 6, 7 & 8 at the Von Braun Center. With this being the largest event the Association puts on, we’ll need “all hands on deck” to make this a successful show. Remember, as a volunteer, this is a wonderful networking opportunity for you and your business. Next, we’ll head out on the water for the West Family Bass Tournament at Goose Pond Colony on April 3. Make plans now to join us for a day of fishing and fun! The Chandler Family Golf Tournament will take place later in the year, followed by the Fall Home and Garden Show. Stay tuned for more details and ways to get involved with these special events.

Get to Know Your Fellow Members

Finally, I would like to encourage each of our members to aquaint yourself with the members of this Association. There are A LOT of us, which means the networking benefits you and your company receive are like no other.

- Rhonda Pugh, Pugh Group-New Homes Division - Julie Davis, Reliance Bank

Thanks for Your Service!

We would like to thank Wendy Lee for serving as our 2014 Council Co-Chair! In 2014, our council grew by 41 members, and we had record turnouts to our events! We are excited to welcome Rhonda Pugh of RE/MAX Alliance and Julie Davis of Reliance Bank as our 2015 Council Co-Chairs. They both bring experience and knowledge to the council’s leadership committee. It’s sure to be an exciting year!

Upcoming Events

The Sales and Marketing Council is putting together exciting things for 2015! The council is planning six educational events throughout the year that will benefit all members of the association. Our “Lunch and Learns” are not only an abundant source of helpful information, but also a great way to network with fellow association members. We always offer a tasty lunch and door prizes too! Our first event is February 9 where we will be celebrating the start of a new year, and providing tips on how you can make 2015 the best year ever! If you are interested in joining the council, please contact our staff liaison Theresa Kennedy at theresa@buildersassn.org or 256-536-2602.

Regulatory Affairs Update Dollars and Sense…

If you participate in the business arena, be it building, subcontracting, supplier, insurance, accounting or attorney it makes dollars and sense to support the HMCBA governmental affairs efforts. Over the course of 2014 your Association has saved you many times the cost of membership. Contributions to ABPAC helps us in derailing un-necessary regulations, fees, and other indirect savings of time and the cost associated with employees spending hours on completing forms, applications and registrations. If every unintended consequence attempted had come to fruition, your cost of doing business in direct dollar cost and in time consuming red tape, would be increased by thousands of dollars more and in some cases by 10’s of thousands of dollars. It makes sense to participate and it saves dollars big time. This is why your fellow members volunteer their time and efforts to participate in the Governmental Affairs process, contribute to ABPAC and realize saving to their bottom line. When you receive governmental affairs ALERTS, it is because we have an issue that could jeopardize your business interest. Please take the time to read the ALERTS and respond to let the HMCBA what you think; member input and contributions are the lifeline of successful regulatory and governmental affairs affords. There is strength in numbers; elected officials do pay attention to their constituent’s views. An unscientific survey verifies that our 1,000 members employ approximately 16,000 people. If we can continue to improve our membership election turn-out and vote as a united block, the HMCBA could win any race or issue to be put to a vote in Madison County.

ABPAC

Our next election cycle is 2016 and we must keep the momentum growing both in numbers and dollars. Make sure to utilize the dues check-off for ABPAC contributions. Currently we have approximately 80% participation and we need 100% participation. We have had a great run, election victory wise with our endorsed candidates winning about 90% of the time but we can do better. We are becoming a force and a clear voice on behalf of the building industry and the business community. We can’t rest on our laurels. We have to increase our numbers and available contribution dollars to maintain and extent our current position of prominence in the legislative arena.

AL Senate District 7 Paul Samford (won) AL Senate District 8 Steve Livingston (won) AL House District 6 Phil Williams (won) AL House District 10 Mike Ball (won) AL House District 20 Howard Sanderford (won) AL House District 21 Jim Patterson (won) AL House District 22 Richie Whorton (won) AL House District 25 Mac McCutcheon (won)

Both the local and state Associations have a seat at the table on any business related issues that may arise in Madison County or across the state of Alabama. 2016 will be here before you know it and we have to “reload” in 2015 for the next election cycle. We plan to have two major ABPAC fundraisers in 2015, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. I urge you to participate in these events and encourage your fellow HMCBA members to participate as well. More specifics on these events will follow.

Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning (won) Madison County Tax Assessor Cliff Mann (won) Madison County License Director Mark Craig (won) Madison County School Superintendent Matt Massey (won)

Elections

Huntsville School Board Beth Wilder (won) Elisa Ferrell (won)

HMCBA and HBAA enjoyed a great election year in 2014. HMCBA won all but 2 local races and HBAA won in 138 of the 140 legislative races in which ABPAC participated. Below is a list of the local races and the candidates the Association endorsed: AL Senate District 2 Bill Holtzclaw (won) AL Senate District 3 Arthur Orr (won)

Huntsville City Council Bill Kling (won) Jennie Robinson (won)

Remember if you never hear about antibusiness issues or never have to pay additional fees, HMCBA has done its job! The Staff’s job is to never let these threats see the light of day and never become a burden to you in time or money. You have enough to worry about just trying to operate a profitable business 24/7/365. Remember we always have your back!

If your company’s name starts with an A through L, your company representative needs to attend the 10:00 AM exhibitor’s meeting. Let’s “Gear-Up” for the ShowSM!!!

In October 2014, the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association’s Associate Council took over the office kitchen to host an Appreciation Lunch for the entire HMCBA staff; several of the Associate Council members even showed up bright and early at 8:00 a.m. to begin grilling. The Associate Council worked vigorously to prepare quite the spread. From grilled chicken and pork tenderloin to macaroni and cheese and broccoli salad to Key Lime pie and apple crumb cake, everything prepared was exceptionally delicious. A wonderful time of fellowship was had by all in attendance. What a fun and relaxing way to end a busy work week!
