Members looked with much anticipation to the night of the event. WOW, a chance to win $10,000 with the pull of a ticket. With a buffet dinner to enjoy, members and ticket holders settled in for a night of fun and to see who would be drawn as the last ticket. When there were only four ticket left, the ticket holders were called to the stage and the decision-making really became more difficult. “Do I hold out to the end or do I split it? Man Oh Man!” Look below for the Winners! Thanks Members, over $10,000 was raised for the Scholarship Fund.
Hank Campbell of Huntsville Hardscapes, Jeff Bennett of Bennett Nurseries, Morgan Stephens standing for Carl Keenum of Boral Building Products and Byrne Turner standing for Doug Tate of Tate Services decided to split the $10,000 four ways. 8

Byrne Turner, President
As we move into a new year filled with change and the anticipation of a brighter future we all must take a moment to pause and take inventory of what is important in life. The extremely vicious political season we have just endured shows us all the importance of the values we teach our children. We must give them a good foundation at home to be able to withstand the onslaught of filth they hear and see daily. That foundation starts at home, homes we build! We don’t just build houses; we build homes. We all need to remember that as we do business on a daily basis. The future of the family unit is what will dictate the future of this country. We play a vital role in that.
It’s an Honor
I am honored to be trusted with the office of President for 2017 and I look forward
President’s Message
to serving each of you. This year will be one of the most important years in our association’s future. We are entrusted with the task of finding a successor to Lynn Kilgore our Executive Director. Lynn will be retiring in September. She has been a cohesive driving force behind our association for over 31 years. She makes sure everything runs the way it’s supposed to for every event and every meeting. We will hear more about that as her retirement draws near but everyone will need to pitch in a little more to ensure a smooth transition. Our association is one of the best Builders Associations in the country. We have an outstanding staff that consistently wins awards at the National Level and our association is always awarded numerous awards at the state level. This past year we won Best Communications to Members on the state level.
party and the home itself were a big hit. We implemented a new ParadeSmart App and data collection system to further aid our members participating in the Parade™. The App breaks down the demographics of the attendees and it also gave the attendees the map and many other options on their smartphone. We held a Reverse Raffle in support of the Scholarship Program and raised over $10,000.00. The dinner and raffle were very well attended and for those of you that did not attend you missed an exciting evening. The $10,000 grand prize was awarded along with several other prizes. Most recently we held our Christmas Open House highlighting the association’s give back program called the Hammer Down Hunger Food Drive. The proceeds went to benefit The Care Center in New Hope. As you can see I have some BIG SHOES to fill. Those of you who know TJ know I mean that literally!
Thank to TJ Meers
A Bright and Encouraging Future
I would like to thank TJ Meers for the outstanding job he did and the leadership he provided over the past year. He has set an excellent example to follow. Under his leadership we held the Gig Robinson Nail Drivers Open Golf Tournament at Gunter’s Landing which was a huge success. We built a Showcase Home in the Village of Providence. The premier
Our future is bright with the stock market at an all-time high, consumer confidence returning and the changes taking place in Washington. I truly feel we will see our industry continue to improve. Make sure to keep the HMCBA a part of your business. Reap the benefits our association has to offer from reduced workers comp and cell phone rates to rebates on new vehicles. Do business with members and pitch the association to non-members. Tell them what they are missing out on by not being a member of this great association.
Upcoming Events
We have a busy first quarter ahead of us with the NAHB International Builders Show taking place in Orlando Jan 10th – 12th. Our installation of officers will be on Jan 19th. The HBAA Winter Board meeting in Montgomery will be Feb 21st-22nd and the much anticipated Building Home and Remodeling Show will be March 3rd-5th at the VBC. We still have booths available. If you have never participated in this event you are missing out on an excellent opportunity to grow your business. Again, I am looking forward to serving as your President and I am always available to answer any questions or listen to suggestions you may have to improve our association.

- Steve Steele, Steve Steele Custom Homes Active 2016 Agenda
The Remodelers Council had a very busy and productive 2016. They hosted many informative seminars that I hope you took advantage of. These seminars aim to educate and provide a networking opportunity that presents Council members with info that is useful to them both personally and professionally. We welcome all HMCBA members to attend our functions and encourage them to join the Council as well!
Upcoming Lunch & Learns
The Council is already hard at work to continue the momentum generated in 2016. The Remodelers Council plans to host several Lunch & Learns throughout 2017. The first Lunch & Learn will continue the topic of home automation and technical home upgrades that the Sales & Marketing Council discussed at their November Lunch & Learn. With the ever-changing technology present in our society and the constant new capabilities that can be added to a home, we thought it would be appropriate to host a Lunch & Learn to share with members interested in remodeling the new opportunities available to upgrade a home with the most advanced technologically on the market. We will host a Lunch & learn titled, “Wiring for the Future” at the HMCBA in the first quarter of the year. Be on the lookout for more information regarding this meeting!
New Contracts & Warranties The HBAA is currently developing new contracts and warranties that will affect members throughout the state. These initiatives will roll out in the spring of 2017. To update you and to answer questions you may have about the new contracts and warranties we will host a Lunch & Learn once these are released. More information will be 8

shared as we get closer to the publication of the contracts and warranties.
A Familiar Face
We are pleased to announce that 2016 Chairman, Steve Steele, will continue in the same role for 2017. Under Steve’s leadership the Remodeler’s Council was able to accomplish many of their goals they set out to accomplish for 2016. We look forward to working with Steve another year in the same capacity! All these educational seminars, items, and events to assist the Remodelers Council members increase their volume
of business and grow their businesses are supplied at NO COST to Remodelers Council members with their $55.00 annual dues. This is a bargain by any measure. If you are a Remodeler or Associate member who works with Remodelers, you should take advantage of these great benefits of membership. Join us! It is good for your business!!
Christmas Open Home
The Association hopes you were able to attend the Christmas Open House at the Association’s Office on December 8th.
Many of our members brought canned and boxed food goods to donate to the “Hammer Down Hunger” Food Drive (see page 12) that ended that week of December. The office was decorated festively and Christmas songs could be heard in all the rooms. Christmas treats ladened the tables for members to snack on. Everyone had a great time wishing each other Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Feliz Navidad, and Happy Holidays. We would like to thank Home Choice Windows & Doors for sponsoring the Open House and enjoying the holidays with us.

This year, prior to the holiday season, the Association made plans to do another food drive and Hammer Down Hunger was conceived.
Starting in October, the Hammer Down Hunger Food Drive was announced on the website, Facebook, in eCalendars, eNewsletters, billing statements - everywhere we could inform our members to participate. And our members “stepped up to the plate” (no punn intended).
After the Christmas Open House, our members had donated $600 in cash, a truckload (bed and king cab) of cans and boxes of food and two pair of children’s pajamas. This was donated to The Care Center in New Hope to assist local families in need. Doug Tate, who volunteers at The Center, and John Roberts loaded Doug’s truck full to take to The Center. Regulatory Affairs Update YOUR MEMBERSHIP AT WORK FOR YOU! 2016 Elections
2016 was an important election year for the HMCBA and the country as a whole. There were elections held in the City of Huntsville, City of Madison, and Madison County. The HMCBA wants to extend special congratulations to Roger Jones on his re-election as District 1 County Commissioner on the Madison County Commission. We look forward to working with the newly shaped City Councils and Commission in the upcoming year.
Trump Administration and the Building Industry
President-elect Donald J. Trump will make his oath of office and be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on January 20th. As the country transitions from an Obama Administration to a Trump Administration, many people of the public and industry sectors are concerned with the impact this change in power and ideology will cause. As President-elect Trump begins to assemble a leadership team and a game plan for governance, NAHB is hard at work to ensure that our members’ priorities are addressed by the administration. NAHB leaders have had extensive discussions and sent background information to the Trump team about a number of significant issues, including President Obama’s Executive Order that drastically changes development rules in and around floodplains.
President-elect Trump has many issues and policies he plans to tackle within his first 100 days. It is uncertain which items he and his team will take action on first, but the Trump Administration will be presented a tremendous opportunity to impact the building industry for better or worse. No one can predict when the changes will come or to what magnitude they will be, but we can ensure that your NAHB government affairs, legal and regulatory staff is already preparing and will be working to support each of our members! The Association is also pleased that Hall of Fame Member, Senator Jeff Sessions, has been selected as United States Attorney General, upon Senate Confirmation. Having an Alabamian and friend of the Builder’s Association play such a prominent role in the Trump Administration will certainly work in favor of our state.
From NAHB
The National Association of Home Builders has released data based off 800 studies performed nationwide on the local impact of home building activity. It shows the jobs, income, and taxes generated by building 100 single-family homes and 100 rental apartments, as well as $1 million of residential remodeling in a typical local area.

The new estimated one-year impacts of building 100 single-family homes in a typical local area are: $28.7 million in local income, $3.6 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and 394 local jobs. The estimated one-year impacts of building 100 rental apartments are: $11.7 million in local income, $2.2 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and 161 local jobs. The one-year impacts of spending $1 million on residential remodeling in the typical local area are estimated at: $841,000 in local income, $71,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and 11 and half local jobs. The above estimates are generated from a proprietary NAHB model that captures the income earned by local industries during construction, the ensuing “ripple” effects that occur as some of this income is spent locally, and ongoing effects of increased property taxes and the new homes becoming occupied. These numbers display how vital homebuilding is to supporting local governments, job creation, and generating economic growth within the community.

In addition, John held internships and graduate assistantships working in economic development, energy policy, and education policy. John is an avid sports fan, politics consumer, and reader. A new year with new beginnings is upon us! We don’t know about you, but for us, 2016 certainly flew by. On behalf of HMCBA and the Membership Committee, we’d like to specifically thank Russ Wilson for chairing the Membership Committee in 2015 and 2016. Russ did an outstanding job leading the efforts of the Committee, and we thank him for his continued support as we transition into the position.
