The HMCBA is a great resource to take your business to the next level where you can be a step above the competition. There are many ways that you can get involved at the HMCBA. You can literally be as involved

as you choose to be. The more you put into your membership the more you will get out of it. Coming to the general membership events is a great start. You can also participate in one of the many committees that are always looking for new members. We start out the new year with the Building, Home, and Remodeling ShowSM in March followed shortly after with the Spring Tour of HomesSM. These are two great events to promote your business or to volunteer. The Summer Board meeting for the Home Builders Association of Alabama was held in Sandestin, Florida in July. There were a lot of new events such as two of the biggest names in the building industry, Houzz and HGTV, who held educational sessions. The Houzz expert gave a great slideshow on how Houzz can be used to enhance a business. HGTV provided a panel discussion on cutting edge designs and ideas and also showed a preview of their fall lineup. The HBAA also had their own version of “Chopped” where some of the local and state members squared off in a cooking contest. Our own Steve Steele, represented our association well as one of the team contestants! This was funny and exciting for everyone to watch them cook and to see which team would be the big winner. The whole event was a big boost in our confidence going forward after the down turn we all experienced in the past several years. It was one of the best summer board meetings I have attended. As a member of
our local home builders association, you are automatically a member of the State and National associations as well. All of these Associations combined provide strength in numbers and provide great resources in many areas for our professional growth.
The 2014 Fall Home and Garden Show took place in August. Many thanks go to both the exhibitors and volunteers who made this event the success that it was. This was our first year to offer a military discount at the event and we had several come through to take advantage of the discount. The Parade of Homes™ is right around the corner! We have 69 homes entered and the builders and subcontractors are working hard to get their homes ready. Of course, none of this could be done without the hard work of our subcontractors and suppliers. We are very fortunate to have such great Associate members and be able to have such a great relationship with them. Thanks to all of you for your commitment and help to the builders and remodelers. This year we mourned the loss of two of our past presidents, Sandra Steele Livingston, who passed away April 28, and Tony Antonios, who passed away May 27. They were both very involved in our association and were looked up to as industry leaders. I, personally, felt very fortunate to have known them both and to have had the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors with them over the years. They will both be greatly missed by us all and our hearts and prayers go out to their families. I want to thank our Leadership at the HMCBA starting with our Executive Director, Lynn Kilgore, and all the staff members. I have enjoyed working with each of you throughout the year. Your professionalism, dedication, and willingness to always help comes through in everything you do for the Association. Great job! I also want to thank all the members who served as a chairperson, board member, and/ or committee member in 2014. The time away from your business and personal life for the Association is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to all the members who attended the general membership activities this past year to help make them fun networking events. 2014 has been a great year and I thoroughly enjoyed serving as your President. ACRE Names First Ever Trustee Emeritus FIRST EVER TRUSTEE EMERITUS Bill Poole has been named as the first Trustee Emeritus members of the Alabama Center for Real Estate Advisory Board of Trustees. A Trustee Emeritus may be appointed when a former Trustee has distinguished himself/ herself by extraordinary and long-standing service, dedication and commitment to the Center. The Trustee Emeritus must have served at least two three (3) year terms on the Board and shall serve as an Ex Officio, non-voting member of the Board. The appointment is lifetime and shall be made jointly by the Chairperson

ACRE, established in 1996, is housed within the UA’s Culverhouse College of Commerce. Bill Poole founded Huntsville’s oldest commercial real estate brokerage company Bill Poole Realty in 1973. Mr. Poole served as the President of the Huntsville board of REALTORS in 1980 and served on or chaired most of the Alabama Association of REALTORS committees for over 35 years, including serving as President for the state association in 1990. Mr. Poole has served on the National Association of REALTORS Legislative Committee and as a member of the Federal Taxation Committee. Mr. Poole was appointed by Governor Fob James to serve on the Alabama Real Estate Commission in 1995 where he served as the longest chair in history from 2000-2007.
Bill Poole was one of the instrumental members in the creation of the Alabama Center for Real Estate in partnership with the Alabama Association of Realtors, Alabama Real Estate Commission & Culverhouse College of Commerce at the University of Alabama. This recognition demonstrates our appreciation for their commitment to the core purpose of ACRE which is to advance the real estate industry in Alabama by providing relevant resources in the areas of research, education and outreach.

REMODELORS COUNCIL - $55.00/year: The Remodelors Council represents those persons whose primary business is in the Remodeling Industry. Programs include a speakers bureau, educational seminars, networking opportunities and professional designation programs. SALES & MARKETING COUNCIL- $50.00/ year: The Sales and Marketing Council provides information to its members whose interests are increasing and sharing their knowledge of sales & marketing. Educational seminars, publications and networking opportunities are provided on a regular basis. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Responsible for planning membership contests, retention of members, programs for the Spike Club, and planning membership events. Serves as hospitality committee at general membership meetings and other association activities. Responsible for introducing new members to other members, calling new members and inviting them to meetings, etc. Lots of networking & business contacts - a great way to meet new members and gain recognition from your peers! Inline Lighting Donates to Foundation Scholarship Fund
The August General Membership Event was hosted by Inline Lighting & Electrical in their newly designed and award winning showroom and warehouse. Door prizes were given away; a silent auction filled with electrical products used in today’s homes was held; and a live auction featuring many beautiful chandeliers were auctioned off. At the end of the event, the proceeds from the auctions, plus that same amount matched by Inline Lighting, totaling $5,658.00, was donated to the Huntsville Madison County Builders Foundation Scholarship Fund.

FROM NAHB LABOR, SAFETY, & HEALTH POLICY STAFF There are strong signs that OSHA is increasing its enforcement actions on home building sites throughout the country—in both Federal and State plan jurisdictions. One of the main reasons is that new data shows the number of fatalities in residential construction increased by 37% compared to just a 3% increase in nonresidential construction in 2012, which is the most recent data available. OSHA has also instituted a number of local enforcement emphasis programs: https://www.osha.gov/dep/leps/leps.html aimed at reducing numerous construction hazards, including those in residential. There are a few simple things that builders and trade contractors should do to improve safety on the jobsite and be prepared for OSHA inspections: • • • •
Conduct an assessment to identify and correct safety hazards on the jobsite; Conduct appropriate safety training for employees; Update records and make sure they are readily available; Understand the OSHA inspection process (see link below to NAHB’s OSHA Inspection Toolkit).

In regards to No. 9 above, there have been some recent questions by builders about OSHA’s requirements for house foundations/basement excavations. For those parts of the country where basements are common, the area between the house foundation and basement excavations becomes a trench (by OSHA’s definition) when constructing formwork, foundations, or walls. In 1995, OSHA issued a memo “Suspension of 29 CFR 1926.652 to House Foundation/Basement Excavations,” whereby the agency altered the trenching/exaction requirements of the regulation as they apply to house construction,
which is still in effect at the present time. This memo essentially requires house foundations to be benched 2 feet horizontal for every 5 feet vertical (for a diagram of what this looks like, see page 2 of NAHB’s Trenching Safety Card) and the other conditions outlined in the memo exist. More information for OSHA’s trenching and excavation requirements can also be found in NAHB’s Trenching and Excavation Safety Handbook.

Regulatory Affairs Update Local Elections
Our Association was very successful in the Primary and Primary run-off elections. Our endorsed candidate for Madison County School Superintendent, Matt Massey, enjoyed an overwhelming victory in the Primary election run-off with a 75%-25% win. Congratulations Matt! With this mandate from the voters of Madison County we are confident that Matt will do great things for our Madison County School System. Great schools attract new households to their area. New households mean more work for our members!
FEMA Floor Insurance Update
Your Association continues to work with Huntsville, City of Madison and Madison County on flood map corrections for FEMA, awareness of this very important issue to public officials and planning a strategy to help homeowners code with the new flood fringe/ plane mapping and the future cost of flood insurance. A meeting was held with the City and County engineers to plan and assess the impact of the new flood maps.
City of Huntsville Elections
The HMCBA endorsed candidates for City Council and City School Board. The election was held on August 26th and our endorsed

candidates won all but one race and we have two run-offs remaining as of this article. Our City Council endorsed candidate, Jennie Robinson is in a run-off as well as our endorsed candidate for District 3 City School Board Elisa Ferrell. The Association also endorsed Bill Kling who won without a runoff. Beth Wilder endorsed for District 4 City School Board also won without a run-off.
Madison County Elections in November
The HMCBA endorsed the following candidates for the November 54th Madison County elections: Tax Assessor - Cliff Mann and License Director - Mark Craig. The HMCBA did not endorse in the Tax Collector’s race. A big thank you goes out to our interview committee who spend numerous afternoons interviewing and vetting candidates for all the above races.
Madison County Septic Tank and Sewer Issues
The Governmental Affairs Committee continues to monitor the issue of septic tank approvals and processing for Madison County. After meeting with the State Department of Public Health and local Health Department representatives, a dialog was established and
lines of communication have been developed with the ADPH. This issue remains a priority for the Association and will continue to be monitored. Two of our area State Senators engaged and helped the Association navigate these critical issues, thanks to State Senators Paul Sanford and Bill Holtzclaw for their leadership and engagement on our behalf! Your Association is working with the Madison County Commission on making sanitary sewer systems an attractive investment to private sector firms in an attempt to have sewer systems established in Madison County either public or private or a combination thereof. It seems that our members are subjected to a daily barrage of attempts to add additional regulations, laws and ordinances to further restrict their ability to make a profit. Your HMCBA works every day to keep these over burdensome regulations from being enacted. We have been very successful in stopping these efforts and preventing them from seeing the light of day. Our efforts are focused on stopping or compromising on these over reaches and presenting our side of the story to elected officials and regulators. Remember the dues you pay to be a member of this Association save your business many times the cost of membership; we always have your back!
