16 Old Stonebank Lane - The Village of Providence

The 2016 Showcase Home is a John Tee designed Southern Living plan that blends traditional architecture with modern-day interior amenities. Located in The Village of Providence, BALA’S 2014 Community of the Year, this 3,963 square foot home overlooks Indian Creek and the Greenway on one of the neighborhoods coveted Creekside lots. “The Showcase Home is an annual project of the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association and its members. Built by Sam Bryan, Jimmy Bryan Construction, the home will showcase many of the industry’s most popular trends and latest building materials,” commented TJ Meers, President of the Association. The open floor plan invites creativity without sacrificing function and blends formal spaces with social concepts. Guests will be greeted by the Mahogany front door and inviting covered front porch reminiscent of a time where the front porch was a gathering place for friends and family – a concept embraced by the residents of Providence. The two-story entry and staircase is wrapped in shiplap and flooded with natural sunlight from the windows above. The stunning two-story Great Room features a two-story shiplap fireplace, custom built-ins, and site-finished oak floors also found throughout the home. “The members of the Association (suppliers and subcontractors) have worked really hard to make this a beautiful Showcase Home,“ stated Sam Bryan, Construction Manager. “It is the highlight of the Parade route and I hope everyone will stop and see it. This home will be someone’s “Dream Home”.”

New Changes to Treated Wood Standards This summer saw some major changes to the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) book of standards regarding the way decks and other outdoor projects are built moving forward. The new standards require that Ground Contact (UC4A) treated wood be used in the following applications. Ground Level Decks and Walkways • Treated wood when installed less than 6” above the ground. • When treated wood is used in an application that does not permit air circulation or water drainage underneath the structure. • When treated wood is used in an application where vegetation, leaf litter, or other debris will build up and remain in contact with the treated wood product.

For More Information Contact Alan Hill at Wilson Lumber Company 256.852.7411

Decks and Fresh Water Docks • When treated wood is used in an above ground application where the treated wood component would be considered difficult to maintain, repair or replace and that component is critical to the performance and safety of the structure. This standard change will affect joists and beams used in above ground decks and fresh water docks, including floating docks. • When treated wood is wetted on a frequent or recurring basis such as wind and wave action (such as fresh water docks and walkways) or water systems, swimming pools and hot tubs. Export Products- Exterior Use • When treated wood is used in tropical climates AWPA U1 Standard and 2015 International Residential Code (IRC) • The American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) has changed the U1 standards for treated wood used in residential, agricultural and commercial applications. The AWPA Book of Standards states, “Standard U1 is the primary standard for specifiers, such as architects and engineers, but also for end users and building code officials. This Standard contains the information needed by specifiers in order to select a product that best suits their needs. • The residential code (IRC) states that wood that is preservativetreated must be in accordance with the AWPA U1 Standard. • One of the new revisions to the AWPA U1 Standard will change deck and fresh water dock joists and beams to Ground Contact, because those components are typically considered difficult to maintain, repair or replace and are critical to the performance and safety of the structure. Reason for the Standard Change • There is common misuse by homeowners and contractors using Above Ground treated material in Ground Contact applications. The majority of all treated wood used in fresh water docks (including floating docks), piers and walkways should be treated to Ground Contact. This would include decking, joists and beams, cross bracing and other applications where the treated wood would be wetted on a frequent or recurring basis. It is important to point out that the retention levels for the respective applications (use categories) aren’t changing. What is changing is that what products are appropriate in certain applications has been more clearly defined. In the long-term it is expected that this change will simplify the selection process for the contractors and homeowners. 8

Regulatory Affairs Update YOUR MEMBERSHIP AT WORK FOR YOU! 2016 Election Year

2016 is an important election year for the HMCBA! City of Huntsville, City of Madison, Madison County Commission and Madison County Commission Chairperson are all local elections of great importance to this Association. In addition, there is a Federal election for the President, U.S. Senate and U.S House of Representatives, all of which make for a very busy year. Congratulations to the winners of the recent City of Huntsville and City of Madison Municipal elections. As of press time, the municipal run-off elections haven’t been held (October 4). We look forward to working with ALL of those elected to continue to see the City of Madison, City of Huntsville and Madison County grow and prosper. Congratulations to Mac McCutcheon on being elected to the Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives. We are extremely proud to have one of Huntsville’s finest in this prestigious position and know he will be an excellent Speaker! The Federal elections are right around the corner. All of these elections are extremely important to the building industry. Be sure you exercise YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE! From NAHB (National Association of Home Builders): U.S. BUILDERS SEEK NEW LUMBER SOURCES IN CHILE U.S. home builders completed four days of talks with Chilean government, trade and industry officials that are geared toward increasing exports of softwood lumber and other wood products to America.

“The meetings with more than 100 Chilean lumber-producing companies, trade organizations and government officials were extremely productive,” said Jerry Howard, executive vice president of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). “We support opening up competition in the U.S. lumber market because we know that it will benefit American families who want to buy homes and U.S. builders who are seeking a steady supply of affordably priced lumber.” The talks covered several areas, including establishing contacts among Chilean producers and American buyers and identifying and dealing with any policy barriers to increasing the volume of Chilean exports from their current level.

established a system of fees and quotas on Canadian imports to the United States that were triggered in response to changes in the market price of softwood lumber expired last October. The two nations are now engaged in a one-year “cooling off” period – meaning no trade disputes can be filed by either country regarding softwood lumber imports – until October 12. Since the 1980s, numerous disputes have disrupted trade patterns, leading to unnecessary cost increases for industries such as home building that rely on softwood lumber, and straining U.S. relations with its neighbor to the north. This shortsighted political stalemate has left the American housing sector in the lurch.

NAHB made contacts with two of the three largest Chilean lumber producers and a number of other smaller producers who all indicated that they will work together with their government to help increase exports. In addition, NAHB was able to meet with Swedish lumber producers in Chile, who expressed an interest in continuing conversations about increasing lumber exports to the U.S. and building a stronger relationship.

As U.S. and Canadian negotiators discuss the parameters of a new agreement, NAHB believes that it must be mindful of the U.S. housing market to ensure American consumers have access to a stable, dependable and affordable lumber supply.

The meetings in Chile come at a time when the U.S. and Canada are in discussions over a new softwood lumber trade agreement between the two nations. Though U.S. home builders would ideally prefer to purchase all of their softwood lumber and wood products from domestic producers, America today does not have the domestic capacity to meet its demand for lumber. Canada is by far the largest exporter of softwood lumber into the U.S. The latest three-year average share of Canadian imported lumber in the U.S. market is 28 percent.

“As the U.S. housing recovery continues to pick up steam, the demand for softwood lumber will grow,” said Howard. “This is why expanding lumber trade with Chile can benefit both nations. Chile would have the opportunity to increase its exports and market share to the United States, while U.S. industries such as housing that depend on a reliable supply of softwood lumber would be able to meet the housing needs of American consumers and to keep lumber and housing affordable.”

Though Chile currently holds just 1.22 percent of the U.S. lumber market, NAHB sees great potential for growth because the two nations have a free trade agreement.

A nine-year softwood lumber agreement between the U.S. and Canada that

With 25 teams competing for the first place title, the 2016 Gig Robinson Nail Drivers Open was quite an enjoyable day! On behalf of the Associate Council and Gig Robinson, I’d like to extend a warm thank you to everyone that supported this exciting, annual event – whether you played, volunteered and/or sponsored, you are certainly appreciated!

Associate Council Election

With the end of the year quickly sneaking up on us, this is a great time to start thinking towards 2017. There are several openings on the Associate Council for a two year term – 2017 and 2018. As an Associate Council member, you’ll be involved in the planning and execution of the bass and golf tournaments. This is an outstanding opportunity to be a part of one of the most active groups within HMCBA. Not only will you meet new business acquaintances, you’ll make lifelong friends with your industry colleagues. I’d like to encourage you to nominate yourself or someone you know – nomination forms are due to the HMCBA Office by Monday, October 31. For more information or to request a nomination form, please contact Rachel at (256) 5362602.

Fond Farewell

As Chairman of the Associate Council, this will be my final article for the Cornerstone – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time of service, but it’s time I hand the reigns over to the very capable Scott Lang, who, with the assistance of Vice Chairman, Tim Ryberg, will no doubt have an outstanding 2017. As always, your Associate Council is here to support you by adding value to your membership - we value your ideas and suggestions. Feel free to contact me or the Associate Council Staff Liaison, Rachel Weidley at (256) 536-2602. Thank you for allowing me to serve you as your 2016 Associate Council Chairman...working TOGETHER we have certainly made 2016 an outstanding year!

Membership Recruitment

With a total of 80 new members to date, our year of recruiting and retention remains strong. To continue striving towards our membership goal, we are asking for YOUR HELP! We especially need each of you to reach out to the companies you are doing business with that are not currently members and recruit them.

- Julie Davis, Reliance Bank - Darnee Samples, Synovus Mortgage Co

Going for the Olympic GOAL’D

I’d like to take a moment to recognize several of our members. As part of the second quarter of our “2016 Going for the Olympic GOALd” promotion, these members were entered into a drawing for cold, hard cash! Sam Givhan won $500 for recruiting a new Builder, Teletha Ledfors won $250 for recruiting a new Associate, and Kim Wright won $50 for recruiting a new Affiliate. Thanks to the recruiting efforts of these members during April, May and June! Congratulations to each of you! Every quarter, we are giving away these three levels of cash $500, $250, and $50. For your chance to win, you simply need to recruit - this could be a new Builder ($500 cash prize), Associate ($250 cash prize), or Affiliate member ($50 cash prize)! For each new member you recruit, you’ll receive (1) entry into that specific drawing.

Retention Calling

The Final Stretch

The year is winding down, but the Sales & Marketing Council still has 2 exciting events that you will want to be certain to attend!

Trends in Home Automation

On November 14th, we will have another Lunch and Learn and the topic will be “Trends in Home Automation.” A panel of experts will speak about the technology used, how you can use automation in the home, and basic costs. Go ahead and mark your calendar now!

Speaking of Retention Calling. I’d like to thank each of you would dedicate your time each month to help us make phone calls to our fellow members. At the end of the year, we will be giving away $500 cash to one lucky participant. To be eligible to win, you need to attend a retention calling event, and you’ll automatically be entered into the drawing. For each time you attend, you’ll receive one entry. We also give away $50 cash, on the spot, each month during Retention Calling. Come join us on September 27, make a few calls, have a free lunch, and maybe win some cash!
