September is ASSOCIATE APPRECIATION MONTH!

Wilson Lumber Company Full Page

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT The next time you come to an HMCBA event, look around at your fellow members. I guarantee that more than half of the people you see will be associate members. These are people who are essential to the home building process and help enable our industry to provide Americans with an unrivaled selection of quality homes. Among the ranks of associate members are subcontractors, Realtors, sales and marketing specialists, title and settlement experts, lawyers, people in the financial services industry, product suppliers and manufacturers, and many more who are essential to the challenging task of providing housing for a growing population. Associate members are also essential to the HMCBA by offering sponsorships, devoting countless hours at committee meetings and volunteering at special events, and strengthening our industry in the process. Most importantly, our associate members help broaden our perspective so that we can assess issues more objectively in the context of our entire industry. In recognition of the thousands of associates who volunteer their time and services to NAHB and its state and local affiliates, NAHB has designated September as Associate Member Appreciation Month. NAHB and the HMCBA has always appreciated the dedication and enthusiasm of its associate members, but in today’s unsettled – and unsettling – housing market environment, we appreciate that dedication and commitment more than ever. During September – and every other month, for that matter – I urge all HMCBA members to get to know one another better, learn about each others’ businesses and whenever possible, to do business with other members. Our HMCBA is strong when individual members are strong, and doing business with other members is a great way to strengthen the association while ensuring that the people you work with understand the issues and concerns that affect your day-to-day operations. Associate members are invaluable to our businesses and an essential part of our proud history, tradition and spirit. Let’s all thank them this month by doing business with a member! There are a lot of activities going on for the remainder of this year beginning with the Building Home & Garden Show and Bikes & BBQ both in September. In October we have the Parade of Homes and the Rick Wilson Nail Drivers Open Golf Tournament, November the Chili Cook-Off, and the December Christmas Open House. Additionally, we have several educational seminars this last quarter specifically related to our industry. I encourage all of you to participate in these events either through attending, participating, or sponsoring. They are also great opportunities to network with your fellow members. Remember, the better you know other members the better they know you and will be a great reference when someone is looking for a subcontractor, supplier, remodeler, builder, etc. Planning is already underway for 2013 activities. If you are interested in hosting a general membership meeting at your facility, please get in touch with HMCBA staff. This is a great way to get a captive audience to promote your products. Also be watching for a new look with the Cornerstone magazine. We will be going to a quarterly publication and a brand new look. I think you will be pleased with the changes and find it a useful resource. Again, please remember to do business with a member whenever possible. Our members are the lifeblood of the association and our most important asset!

September is Associate Appreciation Month! Member to member business is our Association’s driving force. Behind that force are more than eight hundred Associate member companies, comprising more than half of the HMCBA’s total membership. Associates are your committee and council members, event sponsors, board leaders, political advocates and community volunteers. Many take time away from their professional responsibilities to contribute to the Association, focusing their energy on making this organization what it is today. The Associate members are truly the backbone of the HMCBA. Thank you, ASSOCIATE MEMBERS, for giving your time, talent and treasure to this association!

Regulatory Affairs The GAC had a very busy summer interviewing candidates for elections in the City of Huntsville and the City of Madison. I want to thank the committee members who took time from their busy schedules to attend the many screening sessions held over the last month. The candidates endorsed by the Association are sensitive to the issues facing the building industry and will afford us a “seat at the table” to express our views regarding activities that affect the well being of our industry. We are here to advocate for you and represent your views before city councils, county commission and city government regulatory bodies. Now we need your help by making plans to attend the Bikes and BBQ ABPAC fundraiser on September 20th at the Botanical Gardens pavilion. This is shaping up to be a great event at a beautiful venue. We are planning a Legislative reception for September 27th. A contribution of $50 per person is requested and the place and time will be announced later. This event will provide an excellent opportunity to thank our state, county and city elected officials for their support of the housing industry and discuss the issues affecting our industry with those who serve our area. It will also give the candidates we endorsed an opportunity to meet our great members. We are also having a shotgun raffle just in time for hunting season with a goal of surpassing the number of tickets sold for the reel and rod raffle this summer, all in support of ABPAC. We need to replenish our ABPAC balance to assist candidates we endorsed with campaign debt retirement and to prepare for the next election cycle. Also please remember to exercise your dues check off option on your membership renewal. This allows HBAA to help fund ABPAC which is our life blood to help elect pro business and pro builder city, county and state officials. I also strongly encourage you to help get out the vote on November 6th. Many say that this election is a “water shed” election for our country so please exercise your right to vote! In the category of “what have you done for me lately,” your Governmental Affairs Chairman and HMCBA staff have hosted an Energy Code Training seminar that some 80 plus members and inspection officials from this area attended on the new energy code that takes affect October 1, 2012. The HMCBA was invited to the table at an important

meeting held by County Commissioner Dale Strong with Dr. Williamson, the Director of the State of Alabama Public Health Service regarding inconsistencies in the inspection criteria and approvals of sanitary septic systems in Madison county. We were the only trade association that was invited to attend. There was a great deal of input from installers and builders seeking the consistent and timely inspections and requirements from health department inspectors. Dr. Williamson committed to report back to Commissioner Strong with a satisfactory solution. Three issues were addressed in the City of Madison: 1) The pr0posed sign ordinance revision that would prohibit builders and realtors from placing directional signs inside the city limits of Madison. This new ordinance would preclude the current agreement whereby we can place directional signs out from Friday afternoon until Sunday night/Monday morning. Since 80% of the potential home buyers surveyed said they use directional signs to lead them to the homes they wish to see; this is obviously a huge issue for many of our members. The vast majority of our members utilize directional signs as their primary method of advertising. A task force of HMCBA members and HAAR members is combining forces to continue the fight against changing the current agreement. 2) A new noise ordinance is being pr0posed for the City of Madison. Your Association has vetted the new proposal and there are no changes to the existing noise ordinance with regard to residential construction. 3) A revised fee schedule for subdivision development is being pr0posed by the City of Madison. Your Association was invited to meet with the Planning Commission staff and review the proposal on August 13th. On August 16th a public hearing was held on the proposed fee schedule revisions. The revision is a revenue neutral revision simply combining several categories, eliminating the fee based on number of acres developed and having a one time charge instead. The “bottom line” is that your Association is on the front line working for the best interest of our membership day in and day out so that you can manage your business and rest assured that we “have your back!”

Meet Our Newest Staff Member Our newest Membership Services Coordinator, Lori Jones comes to us from The Westin Huntsville with four and a half years of experience planning events. From weddings to corporate meetings to large government conferences and everything in between, she’s planned it all. A graduate of The University of Alabama’s College of Commerce and Business Administration, Lori holds a Marketing degree and is a Crimson Tide football FANATIC! In the midst of a 1940’s farmhouse renovation and planning her September 2012 beach wedding, Lori enjoys spending her spare time with her growing family and shih tzu, Leo! “I am truly looking forward to meeting and working with each member of the association. In my short five weeks here, the ongoing commitment to grow this association is very evident. What a great group of hard working folks!”

Remodelors Council The Remodelers Council has been busy working on many different projects for its members to better equip them to compete in this competitive market. The Council had been busy updating its By-Laws to bring them current. We are very excited about the line up of educations programs this fall. On September 26th we have Sal Gray from the Alabama Department of Public Health speaking on Lead Paint issues. Several of our members heard Mr. Gray in - Al Juarez, CAMS Construction Inc Montgomery earlier this year and were very impressed with his knowledge and Remodelors Council approach. This will be a “Lead Paint Chair Refresher” session. On October 4th we will have a Remodelors Roundtable with the Inspection Departments from the City of Huntsville, the City of Madison and Madison County. Their staffs will join our members for a roundtable discussion of issues pertinent to Remodelers. On October 10th there will be a joint Lunch and Learn with the Sales and Marketing Council who will conduct a seminar on how to market your remodeling firm, including websites and other methods of reaching your target market. On October 31st another Lunch and Learn, sponsored by the Remodelers Council, entitled “How to bid and win jobs with Insurance companies,” will be held at the HMCBA Office. On September 20th we will have our annual Bikes and Bar-B-Q, www.buildersassn.org

ABPAC fundraiser at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens Grisham Pavilion. This is a great venue for our annual event and it the first time we have held the event at the Gardens. Look for more information in the near future on sponsorships and how to enter your team. This year’s Bikes and Bar-B-Q should be a great event. The HMCBA and the Remodelers Council will host a CGR PREP test for the CGR designation course. The PREP test acts as an indicator of your current knowledge and indicates what courses you need to take in order to be certified. Five members are required to administer the test. We currently have 3 members signed up for the PREP test and need only 2 more to make it happen. The cost is a reasonable $195.00 for members. Sign up today for this great certification from NAHB.
