WELCOME CROESO

Hello and welcome to our new season. Inside you’ll find a wealth of eye-opening, thought-provoking performances from across the UK.

Helo a chroeso i’n tymor newydd. Yn y rhaglen hon cewch gyfoeth o berfformiadau sy’n ysgogi’r meddwl ac sy’n agoriad llygad o bob cwr o’r DU.

Of particular note this season is our coproduction with the renowned Paines Plough and Clwyd Theatr Cymru of the world premiere of Not the Worst Place, a hard-eyed look at what happens when life gets in the way of your dreams. We are also extremely proud to present Broken, a dance piece that will leave you short of breath, brought to you by Motionhouse, the highly-regarded company who choreographed the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Maudie’s Rooms, our co-production with Roar Ensemble will see a grand old building in Cardiff Bay magically transformed into an exciting, mysterious promenade experience for the whole family to enjoy and in May, Banksy: The Room in the Elephant is not to be missed, a gripping story detailing the surprising pitfalls of fame.

Sioe hynod nodedig y tymor hwn yw ein cydgynhyrchiad Not the Worst Place gyda’r dihafal Paines Plough a Clwyd Theatr Cymru, sy’n edrych yn feirniadol ac yn ddiemosiwn ar yr hyn sy’n digwydd pan fydd bywyd yn ein rhwystro rhag gwireddu ein breuddwydion. Rydym hefyd yn falch iawn o gyflwyno Broken, perfformiad dawns gan Motionhouse, y cwmni uchel ei barch a fu’n gyfrifol am y coreograffi yn seremoni agoriadol Gemau Paralympaidd Llundain 2012, a fydd yn gwneud i chi golli eich anadl. Yn Maudie’s Rooms, ein cydgynhyrchiad gyda Roar Ensemble, bydd hen adeilad ym Mae Caerdydd yn cael ei drawsnewid yn hudolus yn brofiad promenâd cyffrous a dirgel i’r teulu cyfan ei fwynhau ac ym mis Mai mae Banksy: The Room in the Elephant, yn berfformiad na allwch ei fethu - stori afaelgar sy’n manylu ar anfanteision annisgwyl enwogrwydd.

Whatever your tastes, we are sure you will find something within to entertain, challenge and make you want to return to the Sherman time and again. The Sherman Team.

Beth bynnag eich chwaeth, rydym yn sicr y byddwch yn canfod rhywbeth i’ch difyrru, i’ch herio ac i wneud i chi fod eisiau dychwelyd i’r Sherman dro ar ôl tro. Tîm y Sherman.

Twelfth Night

Filter Theatre in association with Royal Shakespeare Company

14+ Two worlds collide in Filter’s explosive new take on Shakespeare’s lyrical Twelfth Night. Olivia’s melancholic, puritanical household clashes head on with Sir Toby’s insatiable appetite for drunken debauchery. Orsino’s relentless pursuit of Olivia and Malvolio’s extraordinary transformation typify the madness of love in Illyria: land of make-believe and illusion. This story of romance, satire and mistaken identity is crafted into one of the most exciting and accessible Shakespeare productions of recent years. Experience the madness of love in this heady world where riotous gig meets Shakespeare. Nominated for Best Shakespearean Production – What’s Onstage Awards 2008 Dau fyd yn gwrthdaro yn nehongliad trawiadol newydd Filter o Twelfth Night gan Shakespeare.

“Filter’s lo-fi, 90 minute remix of Shakespeare’s comedy infects the audience with the play’s celebratory spirit of madness from the start” The Metro

Mae teulu melancolig, piwritanaidd Olivia yn gwrthdaro’n ffyrnig ag awch anniwall Syr Toby am gyfeddach feddwol. Mae ymgyrch ddidostur Orsino i ennill calon Olivia a thrawsnewidiad anhygoel Malvolio yn nodweddu gwallgofrwydd cariad yn Illyria: y wlad hud a lledrith.

“Fresh, fast and very funny… Chaotic, creative and zinging with vibrant irreverence” The Times

Y stori ramant, ddychanol hon am gamadnabod yw un o gynyrchiadau mwyaf cyffrous a hygyrch dramâu Shakespeare yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf. Dewch i brofi gwallgofrwydd cariad yn y byd byrbwyll hwn lle mae cythrwfl a Shakespeare yn dod ynghyd. Enwebwyd am y Cynhyrchiad Shakespeare Gorau – Gwobrau What’s Onstage 2008

Dance Touring Partnership presents

The Rite of Spring & Petrushka Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre

16+ The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s thrilling dance theatre double bill are a contrast in light and dark that mirrors the Stravinsky music of the same name. The imagery in The Rite of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual. The rhythmic elements of the music are played out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, as age is sacrificed and mother earth is worshipped. By contrast Petrushka is bright and light. Elements of folk dances and warmer days are conjured as the company dances for approval from their ancestors. Performed by an international cast of 14, both works are theatrical interpretations of the original music that created such outrage and excitement in the early 20th century. Mae dau hanner perfformiad theatr ddawns gyffrous Michael Keegan-Dolan yn wrthgyferbyniad o oleuni a thywyllwch sy’n adlewyrchu cerddoriaeth Stravinsky o’r un enw. Mae’r delweddau yn The Rite of Spring yn dywyll, yn syfrdanol, yn dreisgar ac yn rhywiol. Caiff elfennau rhythmig y gerddoriaeth eu chwarae yn y golygfeydd o ddefod ffrwythlondeb baganaidd, pan gaiff oed ei aberthu a phan gaiff mam y ddaear ei haddoli. Mewn gwrthgyferbyniad mae Petrushka yn olau ac yn ysgafn. Ceir ynddi elfennau o ddawnsio gwerin a dyddiau cynhesach wrth i gyplau ddawnsio i ennyn cymeradwyaeth eu hynafiaid. Wedi’u perfformio gan gast rhyngwladol o 14 o ddawnswyr, mae’r ddau ddarn o waith yn ddehongliadau theatraidd o gerddoriaeth wreiddiol a greodd gymaint o ddicter a chyffro ar ddechrau’r ugeinfed ganrif. 4

Under Milk Wood: an Opera Taliesin Arts Centre

In 1954 Dylan Thomas caused a literary storm with his play for voices, Under Milk Wood. Sixty years on, Wales’ leading opera composer, John Metcalf creates a groundbreaking new opera and recreates Thomas’ world of Llareggub - the town that went mad. Under Milk Wood: An Opera weaves together extraordinary poetic and comic language, contemporary and ancient instrumental music, recorded and live sound, as this 13-strong company of singers and multiinstrumentalists creates a feast for the ears. Come join blind, old Captain Cat and his fellow villagers cradling their hopes and dreams in Llareggub. Ym 1954 creodd Dylan Thomas storm lenyddol gyda’i ddrama leisiol, Under Milk Wood. Drigain mlynedd yn ddiweddarach, mae cyfansoddwr opera mwyaf blaenllaw Cymru, John Metcalf yn creu opera sy’n torri tir newydd ac sy’n ail-greu byd Thomas o Llareggub - y pentref a aeth yn wallgof.

Not Now, Bernard Unicorn Theatre

2+ “There’s a monster in the garden and it’s going to eat me,” said Bernard. Bernard’s got a problem. He’s found a monster in the back garden and his mum and dad are just too busy to notice. So Bernard tries to befriend the monster... and that doesn’t go quite to plan. Loved by children, adults and monsters for over thirty years, David McKee’s iconic picture-book will be vividly brought to life on the Sherman Theatre stage. “Mae yna fwystfil yn yr ardd ac mae’n mynd i fy mwyta i,” meddai Bernard. Mae gan Bernard broblem. Mae wedi darganfod bwystfil yn yr ardd gefn ac mae ei fam a’i dad yn rhy brysur i sylwi. Felly ceisiodd Bernard fod yn ffrind i’r bwystfil… ac nid yw pethau’n mynd fel y dylent.

“I ain’t got a city named for me… The swans have though, haven’t they. They got a city named for them.” Paines Plough, Sherman Cymru and Clwyd Theatr Cymru present the world premiere of a new play by Sam Burns.

Paines Plough, Sherman Cymru a Clwyd Theatr Cymru yn cyflwyno perfformiad cyntaf erioed o ddrama newydd gan Sam Burns.

17 year old Emma dreams of travelling adventures beyond her Swansea home. Rhys, her idle boyfriend, has other plans for them.

Mae Emma, sy’n 17 oed, yn breuddwydio am anturiaethau y tu hwnt i’w chartref yn Abertawe. Mae gan Rhys, ei chariad diog, gynlluniau eraill ar eu cyfer.

Facing the consequences of their actions under the disapproving eye of Emma’s mother, they struggle to find a happy medium. Now, camped out on Swansea seafront, they must confront the difficult question of what it takes to leave the place that shaped everything they are. A story about what happens when life gets in the way of your dreams. Sam Burns weaves together a touching, sensitive play that tackles our conflicting emotions about the place we call home.

Nawr, yn gwersylla ar lan y môr yn Abertawe, rhaid iddyn nhw wynebu’r cwestiwn anodd - beth mae’n ei gymryd i adael y lle sydd wedi dylanwadu ar bob elfen ohonynt? Dyma stori am yr hyn sy’n digwydd pan fydd bywyd yn eich rhwystro rhag gwireddu eich breuddwydion. 12+ In 2011, Banksy sprayed “THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT” on a disused water tank in L.A. The tank was residence for a local legend, Tachowa Covington, who over seven years had furnished it with carpets, a stove – even CCTV.

Starring Gary Beadle (EastEnders’ Paul Trueman) this is a story about creating something from nothing and then having it taken away, in the name of art.

Theatre / Theatr 2

English / Saesneg

The play will be followed by a screening of Something from Nothing, documentary maker Hal Samples’ short film about Tachowa and the tank, edited from material gathered over 7 years. Yn 2011, chwistrellodd Banksy y geiriau “THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT” ar danc dŵr segur yn LA. Roedd y tanc yn gartref i arwr lleol, Tachowa Covington, a oedd, dros gyfnod o saith mlynedd, wedi ei ddodrefnu gyda charpedi, popty - hyd yn oed deledu cylch cyfyng.

“One minute he has the audience belly-laughing, with a deft twist seconds later we’re silenced as tears stream down his face”

Daeth y tanc yn ddarn o waith celf ar unwaith ac aethpwyd ag ef ymaith i’w werthu. Roedd Tachowa, yn sydyn iawn, yn ddigartref unwaith eto. Gyda Gary Beadle (Paul Trueman o EastEnders) dyma stori am greu rhywbeth allan o ddim ac yna golli’r peth hwnnw yn enw celf. Bydd Something from Nothing, ffilm fer ynglŷn â Tachowa a’r tanc gan y gwneuthurwr rhaglenni dogfen Hal Sample, a olygwyd o ddeunydd a gasglwyd dros 7 mlynedd, yn cael ei dangos ar ôl y ddrama.

Datblygwyd yn wreiddiol fel rhan o Brosiect Hyfforddi Cyfarwyddwyr Rhwng Dau Fyd mewn partneriaeth â Living Pictures a Sherman Cymru. Whispers are a common feature of countryside life. But a very different kind of whispering is worrying one small community. Elsi’s conversations with the dead are unsettling the village, revealing long buried secrets and telling hidden truths. Is Elsi’s extraordinary talent a gift or a curse?

Broken Motionhouse

Motionhouse’s brand new production Broken erupts onto the stage examining our precarious relationship with the earth. This powerful company submerges highly athletic dance within intricate digital imagery and original music in a visual and adrenaline fuelled spectacle. Hanging in suspense, diving for support and scrambling to safety, the dancers negotiate the cracks and craters of this world of illusions where nothing is quite as it seems. Created by choreographer and founding Artistic Director Kevin Finnan MBE, who also choreographed the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Broken will take audiences on a journey into the earth, as they have never seen it before… Mae Broken, sef cynhyrchiad newydd Motionhouse, yn ffrwydro ar y llwyfan gan ymchwilio i’n perthynas ansicr â’r ddaear. Mae’r cwmni pwerus hwn yn cyfuno dawns athletig, delweddau digidol cymhleth a cherddoriaeth wreiddiol mewn sioe weledol sy’n llawn adrenalin. Wrth hongian, plymio am gymorth a sgrialu i ddiogelwch, mae’r dawnswyr yn trafod craciau a chawgiau’r byd hwn o ledrith lle nad yw popeth fel y mae’n ymddangos.

9bach

To coincide with the worldwide release of 9Bach’s second album Tincian on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, the band will be touring throughout the UK in May. 9Bach made their name by taking traditional Welsh Folk songs on a dark and twisted journey, creating a new stark sound. Led by Lisa Jên’s (Sherman Cymru’s The Sleeping Beauties) exquisite vocals, Tincian sees 9Bach develop their distinctive sound with original material. Inspired by their lives, and the history and landscape of their home village of Bethesda, Tincian delivers an atmospheric, fresh, and beautiful dose of new Folk Roots for the future. I gyd-fynd â rhyddhau ail albwm 9Bach, Tincian, ar Real World Records, mae’r band yn teithio drwy’r Deyrnas Unedig ym mis Mai.

“This brilliant young Welsh indie-folk band led by Lisa Jên’s gorgeous vocals take traditional songs and recast them on a spectral, haunting electro sound canvas” The Independent

Daeth 9Bach i amlygrwydd trwy fynd a rhai o’n caneuon gwerin ar daith wyrdroedig a thywyll, a thrwy hynny’n creu sain noethlwm a newydd.

“9Bach are special both because of Lisa Jên’s exquisite, clear vocals, and the highly original arrangements”

Dan arweiniad llais angerddol Lisa Jên (The Sleeping Beauties, Sherman Cymru), mae Tincian yn esblygiad pellach o’r sain gan gyflwyno deunydd gwreiddiol sydd wedi ei ysbrydoli gan fywydau, hanes a thirwedd eu pentref genedigol ym Methesda, a thrwy hynny yn cynnig hedyn newydd o wreiddyn Gwerinol atmosfferig a thlws i’w blannu i’r dyfodol.

3+ A big storm leaves two very different creatures stranded in a rock pool far from the sea. As their little pool starts to drain away Prawn and Crab don’t have long to find a way of getting on and getting home. Funny, tender, exuberant, partially submerged theatre from award-winning company Inspector Sands. Featuring rock music and splashy dancing, this is guaranteed half-term fun! Mae storm fawr yn gadael dau greadur gwahanol iawn mewn pwll ymhell o’r môr. Set amongst the shifting light of projected digital environments, five other-worldly characters embark on personal journeys of self development, bringing them together in a beautifully crafted performance that explores our relationship with our environment, our beliefs, our bodies and each other. “Mae’r anniriaethol yn cynrychioli gwir bŵer y bydysawd” - Bruce Lee Byddwch yn barod i gael eich cludo i fyd cyfriniol crefydd a defod, chakras a shamaniaeth, talismanau a throsgynoldeb, wrth i TaikaBox ddychwelyd i Theatr y Sherman gyda chynhyrchiad 2012, Beyond the Body, ar ei newydd wedd. 16+ On 5 July 1974, the newly founded Cardiff Laboratory for Theatrical Research (later Cardiff Laboratory Theatre) presented The Lesson of Anatomy in the Sherman Arena during the theatre’s opening season, based on the texts that French theatre visionary Antonin Artaud wrote in the final two years of his life. On 5 July 2014, Mike Pearson recreates his solos from The Lesson of Anatomy - forty years to the day and on the same spot, now Theatre 2. A rare and fascinating glimpse of ‘experimental theatre’ from a time when anything seemed possible, and of styles of performance long disappeared. As well as a poignant reminder of the impacts of aging, as Mike attempts the original choreography.

Ar 5 Gorffennaf 2014, bydd Mike Pearson yn ail-greu ei unawdau o The Lesson of Anatomy - ddeugain mlynedd i’r diwrnod ac yn yr un fan yn union, sef Theatr 2 bellach. Cipolwg prin a hynod ddiddorol ar ‘theatr arbrofol’ o gyfnod lle roedd unrhyw beth yn ymddangos yn bosibl a phan welwyd arddulliau perfformio sydd wedi hen ddiflannu. A bydd ymgais Mike i efelychu’r coreograffi gwreiddiol yn ein hatgoffa’n boenus o effeithiau heneiddio.

CROWDS & POWER

Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre / Theatr Ieuenctid Sherman Cymru

Discipline! Direction! Purpose! Power! Crowds & Power takes as its starting point a real life social experiment that took place in 1967. Pinar, a rookie drama teacher, is charged with the task of teaching her class about autocracy: how does autocracy come to be? How does an autocratic ruler rise to power? In trying to find the answers she asks her group some basic questions: What do you want? What do you need? What do you fear? Pinar uncovers more than she bargained for about the unstoppable power of the crowd.

Performed by all members of the Sherman Youth Theatre and Company 5, this mass ensemble piece will be an electric fusion of text, sound, movement and light. Disgyblaeth! Cyfeiriad! Pwrpas! Pŵer! Mae Crowds & Power yn cymryd arbrawf cymdeithasol bywyd go iawn a gynhaliwyd ym 1967 fel ei fan cychwyn. Mae Pinar, athrawes drama ddibrofiad yn cael y dasg o addysgu ei dosbarth am awtocratiaeth: sut y daeth awtocratiaeth i fodolaeth? Sut mae llywodraethwr awtocratig yn dod i rym? Wrth geisio dod o hyd i’r atebion mae’n gofyn cwestiynau sylfaenol i’w grŵp: Beth rydych chi eisiau? Beth rydych chi ei angen? Beth rydych chi’n ei ofni? Mae Pinar yn canfod mwy na’r hyn y bargeiniodd amdano ynglŷn â phŵer diatal y dorf. Wedi ei berfformio gan holl aelodau Theatr Ieuenctid y Sherman a Company 5, bydd yr ensemble mawr hwn yn gyfuniad trydanol o destun, sain, symudiadau a goleuadau.
