Cataract: A Major cause of Blindness
Cataracts remain the number one cause of blindness in the world today. This treatable eye disease is the growth of protein clouding on the eye's lens which distorts or blocks light entering the eye. If left untreated, cataracts can cause visual impairment and total blindness. Common Symptoms. Cloudy, blurry or double vision is the most common symptom. It feels like looking through a cloudy glass. Poor night vision and frequent changes in optical prescriptions. Whether day or night, cataracts can cause dark fixed spots before the eye. Infants and small children with cataracts may squint or display abnormal eye movements. Children with cataracts may also not respond to visual cues or could have difficulty seeing in bright light. A cataract may make sun light or a lamp seem too bright or glaring. Colours may not appear as bright as they once did. Possible causes The American National Eye Institute says that risk of cataract increases every decade after the age of 40. Cataracts can also result from other health conditions, such as diabetes, or occur after eye injury. Cataract can also be developed from using certain prescription drugs such as steroids, statins, or hormone replacement therapy. Other causes include smoking. “Smokers significantly increase their risk of developing a cataract compared with non-smokers. Studies show that people who smoke double their chance of forming cataracts, and the risk continues to increase the more you smoke.” Types Cataracts Cataracts can be classified by location, tissue, maturity or origin. A subcapsular cataract develops in the back of the lens. People with diabetes or those taking high doses of steroid medications have a greater
Page 3
risk of developing a subcapsular cataract. A nuclear cataract is one that develops in the nucleus or central part of the lens. This is usually associated with aging. A cortical cataract starts at the edges of the lens and then forms wedges or triangles that point inwards to the center. Prevention There are many risk factors that go into the onset of cataracts. For example, overexposure to Ultra Violet radiation can lead to cataracts, and excessive alcohol use can increase the likelihood of developing cataracts. Studies have shown that taking steps to protect your eyesight, such as wearing sunglasses, quitting smoking and good management of diabetes can help reduce risk of cataracts.
Treatment– Cataract Surgery. When symptoms begin to appear, eye glasses, strong bifocals, magnification, appropriate lighting or other visual aids may improve vision. However as the cataracts progresses, Cataract surgery is the most recommended option, wherein the surgeon removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear, plastic intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is a simple, relatively painless procedure to regain vision. Nine out of 10 people who have cataract surgery regain very good vision, between 20/20 and 20/40. Me Myself and I Weight loss tips for quick results Holidays are over and its time to get back in shape. There are so many ways to lose weight. However, most of them will make you hungry and increase your cravings. The plan below will help reduce your appetite significantly; make you lose weight quickly, without hunger; and Improve your metabolic health at the same time
1. Cut Back on Sugars and Starches: Cutting back on sugars and starches (carbs) are key to any form of weight loss. They stimulate secretion of insulin which is the main fat storage hormone in the body. When insulin goes down, fat has an easier time getting out of the fat stores and the body starts burning fats instead of carbs.
Page 7
2. Eat Protein, Fat and Vegetables: The thought of adding fat to your diet may be strange for a weight loss plan but all meals should include a protein source, a fat source and low-carb vegetables. This is because a meal with all these sources will reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60%, reduce desire for late-night snacking by half, and make you so full that you automatically eat fewer calories per day. Adding Meat (Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, etc) Fish, Eggs, and low carb vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carbbage,, will bring about significant results Eat Plenty of Soluble Fiber: Soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a gel that helps slow down food as it passes through your digestive system. They promotes weight loss by helping you feel full so you naturally eat less. It may also decrease the amount of calories your body absorbs from food Excellent sources of soluble fiber include avocados, beans, oat meal and fruits to mention a few. NOTE:- Breakfast- fruits and vegetables. Lunch- Carbs (starch in minimal quantity) protein and vegetables Dinner-Protein and vegetables

Man in D Mirror Train your mind to attract your desires. Some people call it mind power, others call it faith, others say its energy and the list goes on. Whatever you call it, as you think it, so will you attract it. Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the bright side of life and expects positive results. It is about continuously acknowledging and rejecting negative thoughts and feelings as they arise in the mind and replacing them with the opposite. Your thoughts shape your life and behavior. They generate positive feelings and bring forth positive experiences. Some people are faced with certain situations, they wish they could change but consciously or unconsciously remain in it. How do you wish for something and at the same time tell yourself you are not capable of having it? You need to make your desires connect with your thoughts and your emotions. Have you ever wondered why some people are always successful while others give in their best and still barely make it? The answer is simple! The success originates from their thoughts. When you think of something continuously, you attract that “thing into your path and it eventually moves from thought to reality. If your thoughts are always positive, your entire body reflects it and your self esteem and body language portrays it. A common question is how to go about the whole positive thinking exercise. The tips below will guide you on how to do it.
Tips on positive thinking: 1. Once a negative thought enters your mind, you have to acknowledge it and endeavor to replace it with a constructive one.
Page 9
If the negative thought returns, replace it again with a positive one. Imagine there are two pictures in front of you, and you have to choose to look at one of them, and disregard the other. Persistence will eventually teach your mind to think in the direction you choose. 2. Use positive words in your inner dialogues. Inner dialogues are those conversations you have with yourself. Endeavour to make them positive by complementing your self. Self appreciation is key to great inner dialogues. 3. In case you experience inner resistance and difficulties when replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, do not give up. Rather keep focusing on the positive and start saying them aloud to yourself. This is called affirmations—that which is said repeatedly is registered by your mind and that which your mind registers sinks deep into your subconscious. The connection of all these transforms your experiences. 4. Smile a little more. Challenge yourself to a smile every day even when there’s nothing to smile about. It will gradually be a habit. Smiles generate positive feelings. 5. Use your imagination to visualize your success. Tapping into your ability to imagine or visualize, can be used as a powerful tool to become more positive. In other words, imagine your life after your desires. For example if you long for prosperity, let your imagination build an image of a very successful you, the life you will be leaving , the car, the house you will have etc. It doesn't matter what circumstances you face. Train your mind by starting with these tips and you will be happy with the outcome. By K.N Njah (PhD Student)

Some would rather marry a man they don’t love just to avoid being single. Others would fall into self pity and depression in fear of being single. Well ladies, its okay to be single ! Ms. P’s Diary What’s up with the new year! The old has gone and the new has come. I am truly grateful to God for all I had and experienced last year. The good memories make me smile and the sad memories make me strong. So in all I am grateful! The deal now is my new year’s resolution and it makes me wonder how to commit to them. As the clock stroke midnight, I popped my Champaign with those I love and we all exchanged new years’ wishes but as we did, it dawn on me that I didn’t follow through with my previous resolutions. So though I feel guilty for having abandoned them, I want to challenge myself to commitment this time around. I have already begun by writing them down and sticking them on my dressing mirror so that I will see them everyday and be reminded of them. How about that? I have also set a date to review my progress every quarter. So by March I would check on how much progress I have made. Commitment “no easy oh but I go try!” Haaa! Do you know I had so many resolutions last year and couldn’t even keep one of them? So funny! This time around I have limited them to just 2! Guess what! One of them is to live every day like it was my last. “Hmm life no get duplicate” … to be continued. Ms. P

History d’s Month The World’s Largest Diamond was Found On January 25th in 1905, the world’s largest diamond was found at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa. The Great Star of Africa was named Cullinan after owner of the mine-Sir Thomas Cullinan. The 3,106 -carat diamond weighing 1.33pounds was discovered during a routine inspection by the mine’s superintendent, Frederick Wells. Cullinan then sold the diamond to the Transvaal provincial government, which presented the stone to Britain’s King Edward VII as a birthday gift . Joseph Asscher, head of the Asscher Diamond Company of Amsterdam studied this jewel for 6 months before making the first attempt to cut it. This first attempt made broke the steel blade with no effect on the diamond. On the second attempt, the diamond shattered exactly as planned. Asscher is said have fainted from nervous exhaustion..

DIY How to Make Your Own Scented Candles Things you Need: -Wax (could be paraffin, Soy or beeswax),— A pot -A Wick, - A container of your choice for the candle - A wooden spoon, 1. Prepare the Work Area Wax can be very messy especially as droplets an get anywhere as it melts. Set up newspaper or paper towels around your work area. 2. Melt the Wax Using your double boiler, melt the wax. Put a good amount of water in the bottom pan, put about half a pound of wax in the double boiler. Stir it to facilitate melting for about 10-15 minutes. Keep the temperature between 160 and 170 degrees. If it gets higher than that, take it off the heat. 3. Adhere Wick to Container Adhere the wick to the container. Dip the metal tab of the wick into that melted wax, then quickly adhere it to the bottom- center of the container. After just a couple minutes when the wax hardens, it’ll be stuck solid to the bottom. 4. Add Fragrance Oils and Stir After all the wax is completely melted, add your desired fragrance oils. Pour the fragrance into your double boiler, and stir for 30 seconds or so to ensure it’s evenly distributed.
Page 27
5. Cool, and Pour Into Container Monthly Forecast Now let it cool for a about 5minutes. The optimal temp to pour your wax into the container is around 130-140 degrees. Pay attention to your thermometer. Once the wax is properly cooled, go ahead and pour it into the container. Don’t pour all the wax just yet, though. Save some in your boiler for finishing touches. 7. Secure Wick Ensure your wick stays nice and centered while the wax sets and hardens. Having an off-center wick means it won’t burn properly. Simply place a writing utensil or two on top of the container with the wick in between. . 8. Let Cool, Then Top Off As the wax sets, it’ll likely form a sinkhole in the middle. You have to let it cool for at least a few hours to be fully set and for you to see how much it needs to be filled in. Re-heat the wax that you left in the boiler and top off the candle. 9. Trim Wick If wick s too long, trim wick down to just about 1/4″. A wick that’s too long will burn too big and hot. 10. Clean Up The best way to clean it is to wipe the wax away with a paper towel while it’s still in liquid form. You don’t want to rinse it down the drain, it can harden again and clog up your pipes. 11. Enjoy Your Candle! By Angela N Ngam
