If you haven’t already experienced it yourself, then you’ve probably heard some of the horror stories about trying to find or work with a graphic designer. It can be difficult, time consuming and frustrating to say the least, but in all fairness it’s no different than any other profession. Think about how some people must feel when they have to work with some of your competitors.

You’ll want to evaluate some basic things first – things that are vital in any industry. Is your potential designer on time to meet with you? Do they treat your staff with respect or do they treat them they like they don’t matter? Did they do their homework before coming? Once you’ve nailed down the basics, your list of potential designers will probably be a lot smaller. Now you can start to look at some of the things that are more specific to our industry.

Presentation – Everything from how a designer dresses to how they package their sample work will tell you something about them. Take a look at their clothing but avoid basing your opinion on your personal fashion preferences. Instead, look at details that will tell you how much effort they put into their own appearance. Clean shoes are a great indication of someone that pays attention to details. Trimmed fingernails are another. You’ll also want to pay attention to whether the work presented in their portfolio is straight. Though these may seem like little details they will mean a lot in determining the attention to detail that your designer will take in your project.

Point of view – Everyone has a different view of the world and it’s a given that those with a similar point of view will work better together. With that in mind, it’s important to find a designer that shares your beliefs. The advertising for your multi-million dollar SUV dealership will never achieve spectacular results as long as you are using a designer that believes that all corporations are big evil things bent on destroying society for a buck. If your designer doesn’t understand where you’re coming from they will never be able to tell your prospects. Portfolio – This is really a classic case of “size

doesn’t matter – it’s how you use it!” When considering designers you may be loosing out if you dismiss a designer because of a small portfolio. The designer that came by in a 3-piece suit with a three inch thick portfolio isn’t necessarily the one for the job. Maybe the girl that has no college degree and a portfolio with nine pages of work that she did at home is a better fit for you. The most important thing really is quality. The designer that brings everything may not be able to decide what to present and what not to present which could mean that they will have the same problem in delivering a clear message to your audience.

Preparation – Did your designer run up to your

office door chasing his wind blown papers across the parking lot or did he stride confidently to your door, materials in hand? Did he show up with a pen and notebook? This is important unless you want to spend a lot of time later reminding them many of the things that you’ve already told them. A designer that isn’t prepared for the initial meeting is not going to conduct day-to-day business any differently.

WHAT

GRAPHIC DESIGNERS

?

DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW

Ever wondered how some graphic designers always manage to produce beautiful looking designs for their brochures, website designs, logo designs? Talent…yes, it helps but there are a handful of more important things you can do that will have even complete beginners producing award winning design.

Forget everything you’ve ever been told about Graphic Design There are some hard and fast things that graphic designers will insist are to be obeyed. Only use limited fonts on a design for example or never use green on a magazine or book cover as people will not buy it. Stuff and nonsense. You can pretty much do whatever you like but you must apply these STRICT GRAPHIC DESIGN RULES and you will soon be walking away with graphic design silverware.

Somewhere on the page you MUST put in a subliminal message This can be done in a multitude of ways for example if you are producing a brochure selling wellington boots then start every paragraph spelling out ‘buy our wellington boots’ or better still ‘you have no choice but to buy our wellington boots now get out your cheque book and buy them – NOW!’ Another crafty method is to doctor images in photoshop so that on an innocent picture of a tree for example carved into the bark is a message along the lines of ‘U Luv Wellington boots’ You get the idea. just make sure it’s hidden away on a subliminal level and watch your sales go through the roof, quite literally

SHIVE MAGAZINE | 2014

You MUST include a picture of a pretty girl smiling on your document or webpage This works for 95% of products. Put simply would you rather read and look at pictures of industrial machinery or would you rather look at a pretty girl? It’s a no brainer right? Research has proven that mens brains are wired up to focus on girls smiles and of course their breasts and backsides. If you can somehow convince your client to put a naked girl on there somewhere you can pretty much laugh yourself down to the bank. However, never ever put a muscle bound hunk on any design thinking it will work conversely for womens products. Research has shown that womens brains are only wired to think of shopping for clothes and chocolate, so putting a bare chested chippendale on the cover is going to see your business go down the dumper. Unless your product is for homosexual merchandise in which case go ahead .

Shock and Awe – the guaranteed way to get your design work noticed and talked about

P

erhaps the best example of this trick can be found widely used in the modern art world. Sharks in formaldahyde, unmade beds and plastic dolls melted together to sodomise each other. All these pieces of art have been much talked about and whether you find them to your taste or not are widely percieved as being breath takingly original. The same principal can and should be applied to your graphic design work or website design. Add a blood splattered severed willy in the centre of the page for example or how about using an excrement smear as a backdrop. Remember the important thing is to get people talking about your design work. Bad taste soon becomes acceptable once commonplace so be the first to do something outrageous and reap the rewards.

In 2013, Sebastian Mikael hit us with his smash hit "Last Night" featuring Wale and has been rising to the top ever since. Born in Sweden to a Swedish father and Ethiopian mother, Sebastian moved to the United States in 2008 to get a better opportunity for a music career. He attended school at California’s Musicians Institute then later moved to Boston. In 2010 he continued his studies at Berklee College of Music. While still a student in late 2011, Sebastian released his first mixtape, J’Adore. While in Boston, Sebastian credits YouTube and various Internet outlets to his success being that he became signed from one of his YouTube video for "Beautiful Life." In 2012, Universal Motown Records Sylvia Rhone saw the YouTube video for "Beautiful Life" and signed Sebastian to her venture label with Epic Records and the rest is history. Shive had to the chance to talk with this new artist as he shared

some interesting and informative information.

www.SebastianMikael.com www.Twitter.com/sebastianmikael www.Instagram.com/sebastianmikael https://www.facebook.com/SebastianMikael

Q &A Shive: To begin, share with us where are you from? What’s your background? Sebastian: Well I was born and raised in Sweden I came over here in the beginning of 2008 and basically I came for music. I went to school at California’s Musicians Institute and after that I moved to Boston. After the move to Boston I really started putting my music out on YouTube and the Internet. You know just started trying to become an artist and from there I actually got signed from a YouTube video.

Shive: How did your background influence your music and who you are today? Sebastian: It’s everything. I think coming from Sweden I listened to R&B music earlier on because of my parents. Just listening to different stuff they were playing in the house like Sade, Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley definitely shaped my taste in music. Also, growing up in Sweden I was introduced to drums and bass, house music, pop and Rock music. They were very heavy in Europe and Sweden. I feel like I put a lot of different elements in my music but the core is R&B. Being in the states I was introduced to Hip-hop. Shive: I’ve read that you were formerly known as De-Lor. Why the switch from that to Sebastian Mikael? Sebastian: I felt like I wanted the people to really get to know me and the people wasn’t really connecting with De-Lor so I decided to go back with my real name.

Shive: Who are some of your musical influences? Sebastian: Sade, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Cold Play, and a lot of different artist in the line of music I admire. Their creativity and experimenting with different sounds and styles makes me feel like they were innovators . Shive: Tell me a little about the "Last Night" single. How did the collaboration with Wale come about? Sebastian: We were just recording a bunch of songs basically started working on the album and we cut this song. I remember I got into the studio and these two producers that worked with me had this sample for me by Al B. Sure called "Night and Day." It was a little bit of a sample I remember listening to and not knowing what it was and being like this is dope. I’m in love with that throw back sound. We cut the song in one day and after it was sent it over to Wale. He said it was dope too and that he wanted to be a part of it. 7 hours later he sent back the verses. Shive: I knew the song you sampled when I heard the track and I loved it. When was your big break? Sebastian: Yeah, after we made the record we played it for a lot of younger people and they fell in love with it. Like myself, they didn’t know the sample but the older people did. Shive: Your newest single "Forever" has been catching on really quick. Will this be on an upcoming album? Sebastian: Yes. As a matter of fact, it’s one of my favorite tracks on my upcoming album called Speechless. It’s crazy that it came out now. I didn’t think it would come out this early but it actually got placed on Love-N-Hip Hop and the people’s response was great. The album is a process and a lot stuff I recorded awhile back. I’ve been working on it for almost two years. It’s been a long process but I feel like it’s ready now and it’s what I envision my album to be like. I’m real excited to put it out.

Shive: Besides your album, what can your fans expect from you in 2014? Sebastian: There’s a new promo tour so we may be down in New Orleans a little earlier pushing out the song, "Forever". I will also be there at the Essence Festival in July. I know Shive is down there and I really love New Orleans, so it should be fun.

Shive: Hopefully, Shive will get to see you backstage for Essence. Sebastian: Yeah, we definitely need to link up. Shive: I can’t wait, I’m actually looking forward to meeting you. Is there anything you would like to leave us with? Sebastian: I want to give a shout out to my fans. I just want them know I appreciate all their support. I want to come back to New Orleans quick, you guys showed me a lot of love so I definitely want to come back.

Q

What would you consider to be your recognizable track?

A

Right now, my most "recognizable" record is probably Ride Or Die featuring Lil Mama. That was the lead track for my album 1879(One Eight Seven Nine) that went out in blast, features, ect.

Q

At this point, what’s going on with you? any deals?

A

NAME: JOE RYAN AGE: 28 HOMETOWN: FLINT, MI

Currently, I just released my album 1879(One Eight Seven Nine) independently on iTunes and am blessed to say that it is featured on iTunes' R&B/Soul main page as "New & Noteworthy". I produced, wrote & mixed the project. 1879 represents the number of miles that I traveled to get to LA to pursue my purpose. The album is a collection of life & love situations I went through during the journey and ofcourse some fun/general records. I want 1879 to be used as sort of an adjective, so that people can use it in the form of being "on their 1879". We all have miles to travel to get to where we wanna be whether it be physically, mentally, spiritually, ect so we can all relate if we are dedicated to the pursuit of our purpose. For me it's about 100% Faith and 0% Doubt! 99.9% is like 0% for me. Also, Ledisi has a new album releasing this month on the 11th titled "The Truth" and I have 3 records on that album on the producproduction side of things, 2 productions and 1 co-production with Rex Rideout. R&B/Soul singer Shaliek has a single out right now "Aint Supposed To Cry" that I produced and co-wrote with Rex & Anita McCloud. Soul Singer Leela James is going to hit the world with an amazing album as well in May and I have 2 productions(including a duet) and an addition co-write on that project. It's amazing that she would allow me to have my first Artist feature on a major project as an independent artist, I definitely appreciate her for doing that, as well as allowing me to appear on episodes of the soon to come new season of R&B Divas with her. MC Lyte has a reality show "HipHop Sisters" coming out on BET that I've musically scored as well.

Q

What steps did you take in getting to the point your at now?

A

Q

When did you start rapping?

A

I started rapping in 5th grade. There was a rap contest at the main football stadium in my city for who could write the best positive rap and I won, thats when I really fell in love with the artform. The singing came about a year ago though...I was always being really melodic on my hooks on all my rap records but would never go into anything melodic in verses past adlibs behind my rapping, then one day my good friend Rex Rideout(VP of A&R Motown Records) echoed what my wife had been trying to tell me for years, which was to be melodic throughout the entire record but keep my clever lyrics the same as if I was rapping...A few weeks went by and I actually stumbled into it while making the instrumental for the first record on my debut album 1879 "Just Like A Song". I just stopped denying what was inside me and gave it a shot and there began my sound. I knew it was my destined sound once I realized I didn't have to write records anymore. As a rapper I always sat and wrote out my verses but once I started with my sound it would just come out on the spot in the booth which is still for me awesome to witness.

Q

Can you compare your style to anyone in the game right now?

A

I don't really like to compare my music so that I continue to be as original as I'm able to be, but lately I've heard many comparisons to Drake and its really humbling to hear others compare me to the greatest in the game. Drake is incredible and I have alot of respect for not just the music he makes but for the person that he is. He stays true to himself no matter what others say, especially with him creating with the subject matter he does. I can relate because I create only off of my life and at the core its pretty much always about love and/or emotions.

The first step was 100% Faith in God. The next step was having a plan and a backup plan, my backup plan is to never backdown. Building solid relationships and putting myself in a position to be seen and heard was important, especially on the networking side of things. At some point someone is going to pass you the ball but it's up to you to hit the shot. Doing whatever it may take to get where you want to be is key as well...I slept and lived in my Mustang for the first couple months in LA because I knew I had a goal that nothing could get in the way of me getting to it. Ofcourse people thought I was out of my mind but I always say if someone around you isn't saying "That sounds crazy", "No ones ever done it that way" or "I wouldn't do that if I were you" then you are blending in and not standing out on your own. Whatever you know to be true in your heart and soul is the way that it should be done no matter what. Ofcourse you should be a sponge to knowledge and guidance of others that have your best interest at heart, dont be foolish, but don't settle for anything less than what you truly feel your spirit moving you toward. All the faith in the world will not work without work...HARDwork, so I'd definitely say working harder than even you thought possible because in this business, hardwork will always lead to great things.

Q A

Who would be your ideal artist to work with?

Q A

What is your ultimate career goal?

I would really love to work with The Fray, Musiq Soulchild, Taylor Swift and Usher on the personal goal side of things, but my ideal Artists to work with are the ones that are original and passionate about the music and nothing else, its all about the passion for the music from your soul for me.

My Ultimate career goal is to inspire. Being from a place like Flint, MI that is in really bad shape right now, I just want to spark the drive, passion and belief in people from Flint and around the world that no matter what anyone says to you, no matter what they have in mind for who or what you are, it doesn't matter it's about who you KNOW you are because anything is possible. Everything in this world that was invented started with someone's idea that someone else thought was crazy. We are no different with our ideas...especially when they aren't ideas...it's your purpose! Be WHO YOU ARE, GO GET IT!
