28

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

Mr. Krishen Khanna

29

Krishen Khanna belongs to a magnificent generation of painters, some of them from the Progressive Artists’ Group, of which he was a close associate. He has been recognised for his immense contribution as an art practitioner and his significant involvement with art institutions including the Lalit Kala Akademi, National Gallery of Modem Art, New Delhi, and Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal. Along with his contemporaries, MF Husain, FN Souza, SH Raza, HA Gade, KH Ara and Tyeb Mehta, he paved the path for a novel modernist expression in post-independent India, evolving a distinct language blending realism and expressionism in the figural narrative genre.

Mr. Khanna was born on July 5, 1925, in Lyallpur in pre-Partition Punjab, under the British Raj. He studied at the Imperial Service College, England, from 1938 to 1942 as a Rudyard Kipling Scholar. His artistic career started when he participated in the annual exhibition of the Punjab Art Society, where his painting, Dead Tree, was highly appreciated. In 1961, he gave up his position with the Grindlays Bank to devote himself to art full-time, a rarity in those days with very few patrons and galleries.

One of the first works of Mr. Khanna, News of Gandhi’s Death, was displayed in the Golden Jubilee exhibition of the Bombay Art Society (1949), for which he received critical acclaim. Mr. Khanna’s first solo show was at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Madras (Chennai) in 1955. This was followed by several solo shows in India and abroad. His works were exhibited at the Tokyo Biennial in 1957, the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1960, and the Venice Biennial in 1962, marking a brilliant flight to his artistic journey.

His solo exhibitions were presented at the Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2016; Grosvenor Gallery, London, in 2015; Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, in 2013; Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2010; Cymroza Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; Saffronart and Berkeley Square Gallery, London, in 2005; and Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2004.

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art holds in its collection a substantial body of the artist’s works, which have been presented in exhibitions at KNMA such as, ‘Around the Table: conversations about milestones, memories, mappings’ in 2022, ‘Narrating from the Museum Archives and Collection: TEN YEARS OF KNMA’ in 2020 and Time Unfolded II in 2012.

From late 1960s onwards, Krishen Khanna acutely observed the city of Delhi and its ongoing transformation as it faced an influx of migrants, mapping its shift from Central Delhi to its outskirts where villages morphed into urban pockets. This dynamic shift is vividly portrayed on his canvas, the mundane existence of ordinary life.

30

The working class, dhabawallahs running roadside eating joints, for instance Ramu Ka Dhaba painted in 1979, truck drivers, and the marginalised, became his subject matter. One of his recurrent themes has been the ‘bandwallahs’. Dressed in vibrant red uniforms, their presence at wedding celebrations in Delhi fascinated him, and the spectacle of these processions were evoked with varying emotions on his canvases. His paintings often oscillated between states of celebration and mourning. The universal symbol of suffering and sacrifice, as well as resurrection and hope, Jesus Christ was another source of inspiration for the artist. Pieta (1988), The Last Supper (1979), Supper at Emmaus (1975) and other works capture thematic similitude within contemporary contexts, while works like Che Dead- The Photograph (1970) and the Game Series (1970s), elucidate his inclination towards circumstantial occurring across the globe.

The massive mural painted in the dome of the ITC Maurya lobby in Delhi is one of the remarkable visual spectacles that Khanna has created amongst others.

For his invaluable contribution in the field of Visual Arts, especially within the subcontinent, Mr. Khanna has received several awards and honours. He was the first Indian artist to be awarded the Council on Economic and Cultural Affairs (later renamed the John D. Rockefeller III Fund) fellowship in 1962, and was an artist in residence at the American University in Washington from 1963-64. In 1965, he received the Lalit Kala Akademi’s National Award. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1990, the Lalit Kala Ratna in 2004, and Padma Bhushan in 2011 by the Government of India.

In conferring Mr. Krishen Khanna with an Honorary Doctorate, the Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi-NCR recognises his immense contribution to Indian art and culture. He exemplifies the University’s values, mission, and vision. Charting his unique path through his commitment and conviction, he stands as a role model of integrity and inspiration for the community of teachers and students at the university.

Ms Mistry has constantly inspired the team to implement various energy efficiency improvement and digitalisation initiatives across all refineries.

Overcoming barriers since her childhood, Ms. Mistry was the first girl to pursue higher education outside her village in West Bengal’s Sundarbans. Her educational journey has been replete with multiple successes. After specialising in metallurgy during her B.Tech at Bengal Engineering College, she earned an Advanced Diploma in Business Management from ICFAI and certifications in Industrial Radiography and Ultrasonic Non-destructive Testing, among others. During her 37 years in the Indian Oil & Gas sector, Ms Mistry contributed towards the introduction of Aviation Gasoline 100 Low Lead (AVGas 100LL) from Gujarat Refinery, producing premium Grade Low Sulphur Heavy Stock. Her efforts in developing High-Flash High-Speed Diesel (HFHSD-IN512) from Paradip & Haldia Refineries, exceeding NATO-grade specifications, facilitates the Indian Navy.

Under her leadership, IndianOil has seen adoption of innovative business processes leveraging digital technologies. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning (AIML) technologies adopted for Predictive Analysis of critical equipment.

In conferring Ms Sukla Mistry with an Honorary Doctorate, the Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence - Delhi NCR recognises her outstanding contribution to Science & Technology, and service for Women’s Empowerment. She exemplifies the University’s values, mission, and vision, and provides a role model of integrity and inspirational leadership for the university community.
