Enjoy an educational day of bush food and cultural knowledge with Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish of Nura Gunyu in the south of our region near Mollymook, or join Aunty Deidre from Bugiya Naway Buradja (yesterday, today and tomorrow) on the sands of Jervis Bay or Seven Mile Beach for basket weaving workshops and bush tucker tours. For a deep cultural and spiritual experience including a cleansing smoking ceremony, book a tour with Raymond Timbery of Gadhungal Murring (saltwater people) in Huskisson and walk through local bushland, hear stories of the old people, finished off with dance and song. Meet Dwayne from Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness and Mirritya Mundya who can tailor a one-to-fiveday Yuin retreat for your small group including food with an indigenous twist, on country walks and yarns, and healing experiences right up and down the beautiful south coast. Near Nowra, Matt Simms of Djiriba Waagura explores the ancient landscapes and sandstone caves of the Shoalhaven River around Warigala Badha (Bens Walk) where the mullet runs. One of our newest operators, Gadu, offer full or half day tours on the water with a guide providing cultural narrative whilst you enjoy your tailored combination of fishing, freediving or whale watching. The Ulladulla Local Land Council has been running guided walks for many years on the Coomee Nulunga headland and has a wide range of locally crafted art for sale at their

gallery Giriwa Garuwanga. During the summer holidays, Murrawadeen Bush Tours offer tours in bush tucker, heritage and culture in Huskisson. Booderee National Park on the Bhewerre Peninsula of Jervis Bay is a unique and beautiful gem. Just like Uluru and Kakadu, the Aboriginal people of Wreck Bay co-manage the area with Parks Australia. Here you can discover the only Aboriginal run Botanic Gardens in Australia, a school holiday program with free cultural activities such as campfire yarns, and a Visitor Centre with Aboriginal rangers. At this ‘Bay of Plenty’, you can also book a cultural experience with Aunty Julie Freeman from Galamban, a captivating storyteller with a wealth of knowledge about her Galamban (home). National Parks and Wildlife Service can connect you with an Aboriginal Discovery Ranger for a custom tour of either Fitzroy Falls or Bomaderry Creek, or you can make your own way with interpretive signage at Burrill Lake on the Giriwa Walking Track or the Murramarang Aboriginal Area in Bawley Point. For a magical laid-back experience, take a walk around the Crookhaven Headland in Culburra Beach to see the carved poles and magnificent Jerrinja Country where traditional custodians still live and care for the land.

SHOALHAVEN VISITOR GUIDE | 11

The spectacular Jervis Bay Marine Park spans over 100 km of coastline with protected coves, inlets and spectacular cliffs. Its pristine underwater paradise is teeming with superb marine life, and its shores are lined with white, sandy beaches, and charming coastal villages just waiting to be discovered. Jervis Bay’s clean waters and unique composition of rock which erodes to produce fine, frosted quartz grains, are responsible for its famous white sand. Hyams Beach is just one of the 16 beautiful beaches on the White Sands Coast so be sure to explore them all and avoid the crowds! Take the Round the Bay Shared Pathway along Vincentia’s picturesque Collingwood Beach, all the way to pet friendly Nelson Beach or Plantation Point Reserve. Start your trip on the northern side of the bay with gorgeous seven-kilometre Callala Beach. Take our 100 Beach Challenge to find your new favourite, and make your walk on all our beaches a little more meaningful by taking ‘3 for the sea’, keeping our sparkling oceans litter free. Diverse marine life thrives in Jervis Bay, where warm waters of the East Australian Current meet the cooler waters from Bass Strait, along with the intermittent surge of cold, nutrient-rich waters from the nearby continental shelf. Their combined currents flow clockwise around the bay, completely flushing it out

every 24 days or so, creating a unique, unspoilt habitat. Scientists recently discovered an amazing octopus city in Jervis Bay, dubbed “Octlantis,” where octopuses, previously thought to be loners, live communally. Dive or snorkel with Crest Diving, Woebegone Freedive, or Dive Jervis Bay for a chance to see seals, penguins, turtles, sharks, and over 210 fish species. Seal and dolphin watching cruises depart year-round from Huskisson, the heart of Jervis Bay, and whales can be seen migrating from May through to November. Glide across the surface of the bay on a sea kayaking tour, SUP adventure, luxury sailboat, or take a scenic trip on the Husky Ferry for a chance to see giant stingrays. Maybe even throw in a fishing line where it’s allowed, but remember to follow marine park rules. For the perfect end to your Jervis Bay nature adventure, pop into the coastal towns of Huskisson, Vincentia, St Georges Basin and Sanctuary Point for some quality shopping and a delicious bite to eat.

If you’re taking advantage of your holiday home and eating in during your stay, why not shop for farm-fresh local ingredients? For a seafood feast, scoop up fresh prawns and oysters at Jim Wild’s Oyster Service or neighbouring leases at Greenwell Point, or visit the Pelican Rocks Café, voted best fish and chips in New South Wales three years running. For something special, head to Clyde River Berry Farm in summer to pick blueberries, or Sassafras Nut Farm in autumn to pick and roast chestnuts.

at Flavours Shoalhaven in Berry for tasty local gourmet ingredients to top off your holiday recipes. Why not try a cooking class to learn how to make delicious paddock to plate meals? If food is your passion, time your stay perfectly by checking out our events page for foodie workshops and bountiful Farmers Markets. With eateries like these, it’s no wonder the Shoalhaven is a food lovers paradise!

Explore the magic of wine and whales in the Shoalhaven during winter and spring. Book your stay in the cooler months and grab a front seat to the ‘humpback highway‘ from land, boat or in the water, yes you can even swim with the whales! Pair that with unique south coast wines at one of our nine cellar doors where you can meet the maker and engage with great food, tours, live music, art and much more. Whale watching in the Shoalhaven is unique. Our coastline is a half way resting place for whales, and unlike many other destinations you can see them from May through November. Jervis Bay’s coastline connects close to the humpback highway so there is little need to venture way out to sea to find them. Mums and calves often rest, play and learn in Jervis Bay on their return journey to Antarctica. There are spectacular land based viewing points along our coastline, particularly from the lighthouses at Point Perpendicular on Beecroft Peninsula, Warden Head in Ulladulla, and Crookhaven Heads at Culburra Beach. For a first class view, take a whale watching eco cruise with Jervis Bay Wild or Dolphin Watch Cruises, who reportedly saw 102 whales during one cruise in October 2020! Imagine being submerged in the ocean while a giant whale majestically glides past. Dive Jervis Bay and Woebegone Freedive take whale watching to that next level, being two of only a few Australian operators approved to offer the opportunity to swim with these breathtaking mammals. Just inland from our whale filled waters, nine cellar doors sit in picturesque locations, below mountain escarpments, on luscious green rolling hills, or in

beautiful valleys. Delicious boutique vintages are made with love in small batches, and you can often speak to friendly winemakers at their cellar door. Try the region’s specialty red, Chambourcin, or sample Coolangatta Estate’s highly acclaimed Wollstonecraft Semillon. Shoalhaven estates have won countless awards, not only for their wine but also for the experiences they offer. Cupitt’s Estate was inducted into the New South Wales Tourism Awards hall of fame for producing award-winning wine, French cheese and boutique beer, while also providing delicious dining and tasting experiences. There are fun things to do scattered across all our vineyards including live music, art galleries, restaurants, accommodation, and high tea amongst the vines sitting in a giant teacup at Cambewarra Estate. Lyrebird Ridge Organic Winery hosts horse riding through the vines with Eqwine Escapes, and Silos Estate has electric vehicle charging stations. Mountain Ridge Wines has electric limo transfers, is pet friendly, and hosts live music regularly. You can have a whale-y good time or a tantalising tipple in the Shoalhaven. Or maybe combine both for a unique off peak holiday experience you won’t find anywhere else.

If you love the sea breeze there are several beaches and reserves that have accessible entry points. These include Mollymook Beach, Seven Mile Beach, and Greenpatch Beach which have wheelchair friendly pathways, disabled parking and accessible toilets. Free beach wheelchairs can be hired at multiple locations across the region, see the Shoalhaven City Council website for details. For a fun Jervis Bay cruise experience, Jervis Bay Wild is a must! Their eco tours on their custom vessel, Port Venture, position wheelchairs for prime viewing on the bow. In the warmer months, try a summer boom netting experience, where people with less mobility can be hoisted safely in and out of the water. While you are in Jervis Bay why not take a stroll along the Mangrove Boardwalk in the gardens of the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum. The timber walkway features informative signage, right above the crabs and mudflats. High tide is the perfect time for stingray spotting too. Several Shoalhaven Swim Sport Fitness Centres have state of the art accessibility features including disability hoists or ramps for pool access, lifting change facilities, and some centres provide a bariatric pool wheelchair for use.

The in ground trampoline, wheelchair carousel and variety of swing facilities are sure to bring out a smile, especially from the little ones. There’s a liberty swing on site here, and another in Nowra at Harry Sawkins Park. A new inclusive playground in Berry, Boongaree Park, has opportunities for nature play, including sand and water play, bridges, and immersive running wheels. Our region’s wineries provide a relaxing lunch stop, dine casually on the grounds or dine in luxury restaurants at Cupitt’s Estate, Mountain Ridge Winery and Coolangatta Estate, where the cellar doors and restaurants are wheelchair friendly with accessible amenities. Coolangatta Estate also offers accessible accommodation. The Shoalhaven Heads Native Botanic Garden is a lovely space for enjoying nature or head up the winding mountain road between Kangaroo Valley and Nowra to Cambewarra Lookout Café, where you can savour devonshire tea with a view. On a clear day, you can see stunning views of the coastal landscape that surrounds the Shoalhaven River as it meanders its way from the mountains to the sea. Both these areas have good disability amenities and easy spaces to navigate.

Enjoy a picnic or day outdoors with a relaxed coastal atmosphere at Livvi’s Place in Mollymook. Here you’ll find a great playground that caters for a range of needs.

build your trip Allana Ferguson Sports Presenter @allanaferg_ Lake Conjola has been my home away from home growing up, heading down the coast is one of my family’s favourite weekend pastimes. If you’re heading south from Sydney, it’s worth taking the slow way and travelling via the scenic Grand Pacific Drive. Check out the villages north of Wollongong and enjoy a coffee at Bald Hill Lookout for panoramic views across the Illawarra escarpment. Before getting to Lake Conjola, stop by Vincentia Butchery and Providores to pick up the best family meal packs for Aussie BBQ and fresh salad heaven. Once you’ve arrived a quick dip at the lake and a walk on the boardwalk is the best way to start your holiday. A drive to George Boyd Lookout is worth it with spectacular views of Lake Conjola and the beaches to the south. Basing ourselves in Lake Conjola makes it an easy 40 minute drive to Huskisson where my daughter enjoys

the family friendly dolphin boat cruises. On a recent trip, we discovered SUP brunching with SUP with George where we were served a delicious local picnic on the beach after gliding the crystal clear waters of Barfleur Beach at sunrise, a must do experience. On the southern side, a short 20 minute drive, and you’re in harbourside Ulladulla. Mollymook Beach is a great surfing spot for our family of surfers, and the seasonally patrolled beach is ideal for swimming. You simply can’t leave Ulladulla without stopping by Hayden’s Pies with their interesting and delicious pie combinations which can be enjoyed beside Ulladulla Harbour watching the boats come in and out from a day’s fishing. For little ones, it’s worth stopping at Shoalhaven Zoo located in Nowra by the Shoalhaven River to see their faces light up as they greet the monkeys, koalas and lions. What I love about the Shoalhaven is you can visit over and over and will never run out of new things to see, do and explore. Scan for my trip, customise it for yourself!

After spending the past four years living as a photographer in Los Angeles, I came home to visit my family in New South Wales. After looking up where to photograph kangaroos by the beach to share an “Aussie” portfolio with my American friends, I stumbled across Murramarang National Park. Pebbly Beach was my first destination in the Shoalhaven for the roos. Since then, I have travelled to the Shoalhaven half a dozen times in 2021, to adventure and photograph the stunning landscapes. If you’re coming from north of Sydney head via Tourist Drive 8 through Bowral. The three waterfalls Carrington Falls, Belmore Falls and Fitzroy Falls can be viewed from great vantage points on short detours from this main route. Head back this same way and enjoy a guided paddle with Valley Outdoors in Kangaroo Valley

before you leave Shoalhaven. The friendly local Valley Outdoors guides educate and steer you on a secluded paddle on Tallowa Dam where you can find small hidden waterfalls and enjoy a rainforest paradise. You simply can’t come to the Shoalhaven without getting in the water and there is no place better to do that than Jervis Bay. Woebegone Freedive is a must if you want to swim with marine life like dolphins, seals and whales or just explore the underwater some say “magic” caves. Take a trip to Pilgrims Huskisson for a mouth watering vegetarian burger whilst watching the sunset at Greenfield Beach or if you’re an early riser head to Blenheim Beach for sunrise. As you travel home, squeeze in Bens Walk Nowra, a pet friendly loop track where you can enjoy views of the Shoalhaven River with an Instagram worthy suspension bridge amongst the trees with your pup trailing on-leash. An adventure lover’s paradise, a photographer’s natural backdrop, a must visit place for the bucket list. Scan for my trip, customise it for yourself! scan here

We love the sunny outdoors here in the Shoalhaven, but we’re also partial to those rainy days that allow us to see the region in a completely different way. Outdoor adventures are great fun in the rain, but if you’ve left your raincoat at home, there are plenty of cosy indoor activities available for people of all ages. Quaint country villages and coastal towns provide hours of rainy day shopping fun. Berry, Milton, Kangaroo Valley and Huskisson have a multitude of homeware stores, boutiques and gift shops to wander through, accompanied by mouth watering cafés and restaurants to replenish yourself. Thrifty travellers can find vintage bargains in the region’s many quirky and treasure filled antique and op shops. Nowra is a thrift shopper’s paradise, with five stores, a second hand book shop, and a massive Salvos outlet in South Nowra selling everything from preloved clothing to retro furniture. Most towns and villages have full to the brim op shops, including Sussex Inlet, Culburra Beach, Callala Bay and Ulladulla. Lovers of old timey ways will enjoy a guided tour of Meroogal, an 1800s Gothic style house in Nowra, previously owned by four generations of ‘Roogal’ women. The house is open on Saturdays and displays photographs, household items, clothing, diaries and

other historical relics. Discover artefacts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries at Pioneer Village Museum in Kangaroo Valley and experience Funland Ulladulla where modern arcade games, pinball machines and dodgem cars sit under one big, dry roof. Adventurers from five years upwards can scale walls at Indoor Climb South Coast in Huskisson. There is gear hire, climbing and bouldering courses to suit all skill levels. Make a splash at one of our indoor Swim and Fitness Centres in Vincentia, Sussex Inlet and Ulladulla. Each has different attractions, including heated pools for all ages, spas, a waterslide, an inflatable obstacle course, gyms and cafés. Movie goers can watch the latest flicks at historic and retro movie theatres like The Roxy Theatre in Nowra, Huskisson Pictures, the Inlet Cinema in Sussex Inlet and Arcadia Twin in Ulladulla. We’ve only just touched the surface. There are so many more awesome rainy day experiences to enjoy here in the Shoalhaven!

The Shoalhaven’s stunning environment has captured and inspired the hearts and souls of artists and creatives for years. Iconic Australian artist Arthur Boyd even moved here to paint the landscape and has since gifted his beloved Shoalhaven properties as a legacy to artists and the general public. The region’s vibrant and diverse art scene has inspired seven unique art trails through the region and includes everything from street murals, to museums, galleries, and hands on workshops.

Art lovers will enjoy visiting Arthur Boyd’s historic Homestead and studio at Bundanon, located on 1000 hectares of gardens and bushland next to the Shoalhaven River. You can book a weekend tour of the Homestead which houses a collection of works from the Boyd family and their peers such as Sidney Nolan, Charles Blackman and Brett Whitely. In late 2021, an art museum with an exhibition program of modern and contemporary art will be open to the public from Wednesday through to Sunday. The new on site dramatic bridge, spanning a natural wet gully will also host creative learning programs and provide accommodation for on site stays. We’re very excited to see Bundanon open the new expanded facilities, making the Shoalhaven home to the only national art museum in regional Australia. The Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra’s artistic heart, hosts work by local artists as well as touring exhibitions. Take to the alleyways of the CBD for street murals by world famous artists like Adnate and Smug. Regional villages can offer a surprising scope for the art lover, in Milton for example, the Van Rensburg Galleries showcases works by award-winning international and national artists while the Millhouse Gallery supports the local art community. The Jervis Bay Maritime Museum in Huskisson houses the last surviving wooden

Sydney Harbour Ferry, alongside relics from Jervis Bay’s Indigenous and non Indigenous heritage. Explore Australia’s naval aviation history at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross, featuring a fun flight simulator. Take a trip to the iconic Milton Theatre and enjoy the intimate vibe and excellent live acts. Craftspeople and artists often sell their locally made creations including paintings, leadlight features, and pieces of pottery and woodwork. Meet the maker at both Kangaroo Valley Woodcrafts and Kangaroo Valley Leadlight and catch a glimpse of them at work. How awesome would it be to take home a handmade souvenir? Get your creative holiday juices flowing by attending a ring making workshop at Appleye Jewellery Designs Workshops or an alcohol ink painting with Le Workshop in Jervis Bay. Check out the schedule of gigs, theatre showings and performances at the 900 person capacity Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre in Nowra, wherein the Box Office, you’ll find our friendly Visitor Services staff who have all the hot tips on what to do in the region including what shows to see!

The Shoalhaven’s pristine coastline, estuaries and rivers are a fisherfolk’s paradise. If you’re keen to throw in a line, our shore based options include beaches, jetties and rock ledges. You can also hire a boat, fishing kayak or head out on a deep sea fishing charter. Don’t forget to be prepared, get your recreational fishing license before arriving and seek out local tackle shops for the best bait, safety gear and local knowledge. Ulladulla has a rich fishing history, both commercially and recreationally. Harbour and deep sea fishing are popular here, and the pier is a wonderful place to try and hook a tailor, salmon, or kingfish. Ulladulla Fishing Charters provide day long deep sea fishing experiences and a chance to catch morwong, snapper and leather jackets. For something different, hire a fishing kayak from Walking on Water. Burrill Lake Entrance Beach has bream, whiting and flathead aplenty if you’re in sync with the tidal estuary. Sussex Inlet is located on an estuary, which meanders towards the St Georges Basin waterway in one direction, and the open waters of the Pacific Ocean in the other. This entire waterway provides plenty of amazing land based and boat based fishing opportunities. Sussex Inlet Marine Centre has boat hire, and Sussex Inlet Tackle Shop has bait and friendly local advice on the best fishing spots. Throw in a line along Sussex Inlet’s canals or while away tranquil hours at Basin View or Sanctuary Point’s Boat Ramps. Crookhaven River and Culburra Beach are known for catching mulloway, flathead, blue-nose black bream,

tasty mud crabs and blue swimmer crabs. Land based fishing is great along the rock walls at Greenwell Point, Orient Point public wharves and the break wall on Comerong Island. For bait and advice, head to C-B Tackle in Culburra Beach. You can hire a boat from Shoalhaven Boat Hire or let Sussex Inlet Pontoons cruise you through the inlet at your own pace and throw in a line while exploring. Although Jervis Bay is a marine park, recreational fishing is allowed in designated areas and there are great spots along the shore or from the many beaches and boat wharves. If you want to venture out a bit further, then you can hire a fishing kayak from Jervis Bay Kayaks and Paddle Sports. Just be sure to refer to marine park rules on the DPI website so you are trying your luck in the correct places. If you’re keen for a day of reef, bay, or game fishing, contact Simos Afloat, who can take you on a quest to catch bluefin tuna or maybe a marlin!

The good vibes don’t stop once the sun goes down in the Shoalhaven. Afternoons and evenings come alive in the most unique places. Microbreweries are run in industrial estates and historic hotels. Meanwhile, distilleries, bars and cantinas sit in picturesque locations. These establishments are the perfect extension of our wineries and cellar doors and are a vibrant way to enjoy a delicious local drop or a bite to eat. Woollamia Industrial Estate is one of Huskisson’s hottest new hangouts, where you can enjoy a craft beer amidst a funky coastal vibe. Lounge on pallet furniture sipping a local brew at Jervis Bay Brewing Co’s outdoor courtyard. The brewery has an awesome atmosphere, food trucks, cool music, and fun activities like open mic, trivia, and paint and sip classes. Flamin Galah Brewing Co has set up their brand new brewpub in the same estate, promising, “Flamin good beer. Great location. Good times.” South Yeast Brewing Co located in North Nowra offers tasty food truck meals washed down with their local craft beer, whilst the Dangerous Ales Brewery resides in the newly renovated historic Milton Hotel, the perfect space to enjoy a gastropub vibe. Cupitt’s Estate in Ulladulla is one of our original brew teams, offering a personal, behind the scenes Tour and Taste Experience. The Shoalhaven’s craft beer scene is growing and thriving, but the region is also getting more ‘spirited’. Tara Distillery at Nowra Hill is Shoalhaven’s first craft distillery. Its quality gin, vodka and whisky are

hand crafted in small batches using sustainable and traditional methods with local ingredients and pure harvested Shoalhaven rainwater. Try its smooth Australian Poitín, an ancient Irish predecessor to whisky (it’s been likened to moonshine!). The distillery is open for pick up purchases, and tastings via appointment. We are lucky to have great pubs and clubs in the Shoalhaven, but if you feel like something different visit our bars and cantinas for a tipple at sundown. Try Loco Lane at Culburra Beach for tacos, tequila cocktails and a host of local beers available to try. The Gunyah Restaurant is a unique treetop restaurant at Paperbark Camp in Woollamia, which offers drinks and snacks on the deck to wind down your afternoon. Milton’s Harvest Bar has moved to a gorgeous property on Croobyar Road, so pop in for some live music and margaritas in the garden. Sip a cocktail and enjoy a tasty Central American inspired dish at The Ruse, overlooking Ulladulla Harbour. Or grab a bucket of prawns and a local drop at The Social Ulladulla on Wason Street, a brand new bar with a chilled, casual vibe.
