Ride & Run with the Stars at Fort DeSoto Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office holiday fundraiser going strong after 21 years

ince 1993, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has provided help to needy children and families through their “Ride and Run with the Stars” holiday fundraiser. The goal of the event is to provide food, clothing and toys to underprivileged and/or crime-stricken children and their families. For the past 20 years, Ride and Run with the Stars has been held on the first Saturday in December at beautiful Fort DeSoto Park, and this year is no different. Participants will enjoy cycling, running and walking events and a climbing wall, as well as a visit from Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their elves in the Pinellas County Sheriff’s helicopter.

The funds raised at the event support the Sheriff’s Christmas Sharing Project. Members of the Sheriff’s Office then use the proceeds to shop for deserving families and personally deliver the holiday packages. Ride and Run with the Stars is the largest law enforcement organized holiday charity fundraiser in the Tampa Bay area and has raised over $500,000 in donations and proceeds. Last year’s event raised over $62,000 and helped 744 children and 339 families. This year’s event will take place Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Fort picnic area. he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is asking boaters to help protect migrating manatees by looking out and slowing down for these aquatic mammals that often rest or congregate underwater and can be difficult to see. “During Manatee Awareness Month, the FWC encourages the public to celebrate manatees by learning more about these gentle giants, including the importance of people’s actions in conserving this iconic Florida species,” said Carol Knox, the FWC’s Imperiled Species Management section leader. “Boaters slowing down and watching out for manatees can help protect this species from injury. Anyone who spots a manatee that is injured, entangled in fishing line or otherwise in distress can help initiate a rescue by calling the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-4043922,” Knox said. On their annual trek, manatees, including mothers and their calves, swim along Florida’s many rivers, bays and coastal areas in search of the warmer, more stable temperatures found in freshwater springs, man-made canals and power plant outflows. Unlike dolphins and other marine mammals, manatees do not have true blubber to insulate them from waters below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, so they must find warmer waters during their migration to survive the winter cold.

Despite their size, with adults weighing 1,000 pounds on average, manatees can be difficult to spot. That is why it is important for boaters in Florida, including those using personal watercraft, to slow down to prevent collisions with

manatees, particularly in shallow areas or posted manatee protection zones. On Nov. 15, many seasonal manatee protection zones around the state went into effect. For manatee protection zones by county, including the seasonal changes, go to MyFWC.com/Manatee, and click on “Data and Maps.”

Annual bowl bashes hit the beach Clearwater Beach and Madeira Beach will host beach days prior to college bowl games this month.

he Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl has announced that this year’s Beach Bash will be hosted by the City of Madeira Beach on Wednesday, Dec. 24. The annual event, which is open to the public, was previously held in St. Pete Beach. Both teams will enjoy an afternoon at the beach and then compete head-to-head in a number of events in front of their fans, including the much-anticipated belly flop contest and numerous talent contests. The Beach Bash will also offer live music, a photo booth, and official bowl game merchandise for sale. “The City of Madeira made a great presentation to host this year’s Beach Bash,” said Brett Dulaney, executive director of the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl. “We look forward to being able to showcase the city’s beautiful beach area and John’s Pass to the teams and their fans that will be at this

Madeira Beach 13th annual Holiday Halfathon

CLEARWATER BEACH - Brightly decorated boats of all sizes will soon hit the water in the annual celebration that we know as the Boat Parade. Each beach town has their own version, but one of the biggest is the 2014 Memorial Boat Parade. The decorated boats will assemble in Mandalay Channel, located between Island Estates and Clearwater Beach, at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 13. At 6:30 p.m., the lead boat will proceed northward through Mandalay Channel. The parade will weave in and out of many of the Island Estate canals before heading to Coachman Park around 8:00 p.m. From there, the boats will go under the Memorial Causeway Bridge, turning into the Clearwater Marina Channel before navigating to the Clearwater Yacht Club. Cash and gift certificate prizes, donated by many area businesses, will be awarded to the best decorated boats. There is no parade entry fee. John’s Pass Jingle Bell Kids’ Fishing Tournament MADEIRA BEACH - There will be fun for the whole family at this year’s John’s Pass Jingle Bell Kids’ Fishing Tournament on Dec. 6. Registration begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Bell Tower and then fishing for kids 14 and under takes place from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with awards to immediately follow. Participants will be fishing off the docks at Don’s Dock and at Hubbard’s Marina in John’s Pass and must be accompanied by an adult. "My idea was to burn the staircase to match the dark wood floors. In order to achieve the look of the floor, I couldn't just stain it, because of the darkness of the floor. I had to burn the staircase with a propane torch to match the floor," White explained, referring to a project he completed in St. Petersburg. "I like to go after the more complex and challenging jobs that either no one else does or that were not done well the first time." And although he specializes in high-end homes, White gives every one of his projects the same care and delicate approach. "We do traditional homes, but in many cases, we are called to do the difficult and
