communitynews Treasure Island kite festival takes flight this month

he 18th annual Treasure Island Sport Kite Championship (TISKC) returns to Florida this month as part of the annual Treasure Island Kite Festival. Following the successful revival of the competition in 2010, TISKC has reclaimed its prominence as one of the premier sport kite events of the year. Sport kite flyers from up and down the East Coast of the United States will gather in Treasure Island Jan. 17 and 18 for two days of competition on one of the best kite flying beaches in the country. Recreational kite flying is also encouraged. On Saturday, Jan. 17, there will be kite flying demonstrations, pair and team flying exhibitions and kite flying lessons provided by champion Eastern League Kite Flyers. The following day, the festival kicks into high gear with the sport kite com-

petition, featuring a full day of aerobatic kite flying set to music and scored by judges. TISKC will also offer a novice class competition for multi-line precision and ballet. When the sun goes down, the event keeps on going with giant bubbles and night kite flying, along with live entertainment and more. Individual precision events for Experienced and Masters classes will be run according to program precision (formerly called league-style) rules. This format has proven to be more audience friendly and allows for a speedier running of the competition. The 2015 Treasure Island Sport Kite Championships will take place directly on the beach behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort, located at 10700 Gulf Blvd, Treasure Island. "This event has become a county tradition and it is an honor to provide this beautiful service in such a timeless and scenic garden," said the organizer of the event, Pinellas County Clerk Ken Burke. Crab Daddy’s brings their “A” game Breathtaking views and food

or years now, I have been jealous of the owner of the property that Crab Daddy's in St. Pete Beach now occupies. Why? Because it probably has one of the best views of the Gulf of Mexico in the area. For dining, that is. The only other restaurant that shares equal bragging rights is Jimmy's Fish House in Clearwater Beach. But back to Crab Daddy's. I recently ventured out to see if a dining experience at Crab Daddy's would stand up to the view. My thoughts were, if the food was not up to par, I would still have a beautiful view while enjoying a cold cervesa and a meal. People. Listen, and listen good. Crab Daddy's blew me away. I am so serious. The food was amazing and I am not just saying that. But before I get to the food, let me back up and tell you about the restaurant itself and the property. Tucked away off Corey Avenue, the bottom level is the dining area and upstairs is an open air bar, both overlooking the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Just look at the picture on this page. Breathtaking. I chose to sit in the dining room on this visit. As I sat down at a table right by the open sliding glass doors, I was

in freaking heaven. Dang, yes, I said dang, I love that view. Jason, my server, was quick to approach my table and take my drink order. If you are wise, my dear readers, when you go to Crab Daddy's the minute you finish reading this review, make sure you ask for Jason. He was seriously the perfect server. He was extremely polite and accommodating, but not over the top. He was quick with the drinks and the food and made sure everything was exceptional. Class act and a damn good server. My timing was impeccable for dining

at Crab Daddy's, as my appetite was extremely demanding. So on that note, I started off with the Boom Boom Shrimp, tender buttermilk battered

shrimp fried and tossed in their special boom boom sauce. Those of you who like the Bang Bang Shrimp at Bonefish are going to have your socks knocked off you. The appetizer was both plentiful and delicious. I could have eaten them all night. Now, prepare yourselves for this, my friends. For my entrée, I decided to try two different dishes. After all, I was

there to review the joint. My first choice was a no-brainer. The fish tacos. I chose Mahi-Mahi over the grouper. Same price, at the $12 mark. The soft tortillas were filled with Mahi-Mahi, red cabbage jalapeno slaw, cilantro and topped with creole sauce. They were simply outstanding. Probably the best fish tacos I have ever had.

My second choice wasn't so traditional. Jason recommended the house favorite because I told him I love burgers. He suggested the Who's Your Daddy burger, which was as strange as it sounded: a juicy 1/2 pound burger topped with a lightly fried helping of Crab Daddy's Mac n' Cheese and stacked high with smoked bacon. OMG. Oh my God, for you non-texters. It was amazing. What a funky combination but DAMN, it was good. The name Crab Daddy's might give you the impression that it is just another seafood restaurant that's catering to the tourists, but hell no. Crab Daddy's could seriously be one of the best restaurants on our beaches. I was also informed that the Crab WonTons, the Crab Daddy Chowder, the Ultimate Steam Pot and the Seafood Pasta are among their many crowd favorites. Seriously, folks, you have to go to Crab Daddy's. To think that the food actually surpasses the view still blows my mind away. Be sure to check out their new outdoor entertainment complex featuring College Night, live music and more.
