communitynews Use of sabiki rigs a hot topic in effort to protect birds By Scott Lancaster HOLMES BEACH - Local fishermen and Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore, a Holmes Beach resident, are looking for ways to protect seabirds, mainly pelicans, and other wildlife from getting caught and injured when going after fish attached to sabiki rigs. Sabiki rigs are fishing lines with several, usually small, shiny hooks that lure and catch bait fish. Although many commercial fishermen use much larger sabiki lines to catch larger fish, for the most part, local pier, coastal and beach fishermen use the smaller sabiki lines that are the main concern in injuring, and sometimes even killing, local seabirds, like seagulls, pelicans, cormorants and more. Whitmore is reaching out to the local beach community for suggestions on how to resolve the problem, whether through education or regulating the use of the

sabiki lines, although she acknowledges it is going to be a difficult issue to address. "It's a very tough issue to address because so many local fishermen use the lines. I know for myself, I have had numerous birds go after my bait lines when I'm pulling the bait up off the pier or when I'm out in my boat," said Scott Bothman, an Anna Maria fisherman. "I really don't have a problem when I go out to one of the mile markers and pull up the bait fish from there, because it's only me and my buddies on my boat and not a ton of people fishing like off the piers, where the fish and bait attracts the birds." Bothman agrees it's going to be hard to implement a plan to protect wildlife from fishermen using the lines because so many people use them and the birds can be very aggressive when they see fish splashing in the water.

The community is being asked for suggestions how to prevent wildlife injuries sustained from the use of fishermen’s sabiki lines.

LONGBOAT KEY - After what seemed like an eternity, the eyesore at the north end of Longboat Key has finally been resolved. Keller Williams Realty has made an offer to purchase the abandoned Chevron station that has sat vacant for over seven years. According to Steve Schield of the Planning, Zoning and Building Department, the building is going to require a major renovation. "It's going to need air conditioning since the majority of the building is a garage, and also the roof is going to need some work," said Schield.

Keller Williams plans to use the building, located at 6990 Gulf of Mexico Dr., as a real estate office servicing the beach communities of Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island, to name a couple. “We’re excited to have an office on the north end of Longboat Key, where it’s really booming,” said John Thompson, the regional manager of Keller Williams. According to Thompson, the development of this property has been a number one priority for the town of Longboat Key. The new real estate office will house between 15 and 20 realtors.

communitynews Seasonal manatee protection zones now in effect The annual migration of Florida manatees to warmer waters began in November, which is Manatee Awareness Month.

T

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is asking boaters to help protect migrating manatees by looking out and slowing down for these aquatic mammals that often rest or congregate underwater and can be difficult to see. “During Manatee Awareness Month, the FWC encourages the public to celebrate manatees by learning more about these gentle giants, including the importance of people’s actions in conserving this iconic Florida species,” said Carol Knox, the FWC’s Imperiled Species Management section leader. “Boaters slowing down and watching out for manatees can help protect this species from injury. Anyone who spots a

manatee that is injured, entangled in fishing line or otherwise in distress can help initiate a rescue by calling the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-4043922,” Knox said. On their annual trek, manatees, including mothers and their calves, swim along Florida’s many rivers, bays and coastal areas in search of the warmer, more stable temperatures found in freshwater springs, man-made canals and power plant outflows. Unlike dolphins and other marine mammals, manatees do not have true blubber to insulate them from waters below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, so they must find warmer waters during their migration to survive the winter cold. Despite their size, with adults weighing 1,000 pounds on average, manatees

can be difficult to spot. That is why it is important for boaters in Florida, including those using personal watercraft, to slow down to prevent collisions with manatees, particularly in shallow areas or posted manatee protection zones. On Nov. 15, many seasonal manatee protection zones around the state went into effect. For manatee protection zones by county, including the seasonal changes, go to MyFWC.com/Manatee, and click on “Data and Maps.”

Tips on how to spot manatees: • Wear polarized sunglasses when boating. • Look for circular patterns on the water’s surface – the so-called “manatee footprints” that indicate a manatee’s presence below. • Be careful when boating near shallow seagrass beds, where manatees like to graze. • Watch for posted signs indicating manatee protection zones and appropriate boating speeds.

LBK’s newest restaurant opens its doors LONGBOAT KEY - Amore by Andrea, the brainchild of Italian-born restaurateur Chef Andrea Bozzolo and local businessman and real estate investor Howard Rooks, opened for business Nov. 13 in the space that was once the Mattison’s Steakhouse at the Plaza, at 555 Bay Isles Pkwy., just off Gulf of Mexico Drive. The restaurant has been completely renovated and offers both indoor and outdoor fine dining, a casual lounge for Happy Hour and light bites, live entertainment and event space. Amore features contemporary Italian cuisine, with breads and pastas made fresh daily, and organic local produce, seafood and meats offered whenever possible. Chef Andrea, who is also the chef-owner of Andrea’s The Art of Food & Wine on Siesta Drive and the founding chef of Divino in downtown Sarasota, offers menus that follow the seasons and generally change every three months. Amore opens at 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. 941-383-1111

Two birds, one stone for Chiles Restaurant Group ANNA MARIA ISLAND - For restaurateur Ed Chiles and his three restaurants, the Sandbar in Anna Maria, Longboat Key’s Mar Vista, and the BeacHhouse in Bradenton Beach, the emphasis is on good quality, locally sourced foods.

So, last spring, when Chiles heard of Charlotte County rancher Keith Mann’s endeavor to cut down on the feral pig population in the area, the wheels started spinning. Mann’s idea was to dispatch trappers into areas with a high population of nuisance pigs and sell the “free range” pork meat to local restaurants. He considered the plan an ideal solution to the rampant problems caused by wild pigs - a benefit to property owners, restaurant owners, trappers and

especially the diners who get to enjoy the fresh, unprocessed meat. Chiles contacted Mann, and now his three restaurants serve over 150 pounds of the pork every week. Those who have tried it say it is excellent, and not gamey at all. And for those who may be a little squimish about sampling wild pork, rest assured, the meat is stringently inspected by the USDA and must be sold to restaurants by a distributor.

Lobstahs: AMI’s local fave

I

thought residing in Indian Rocks Beach, just south of Clearwater Beach, was the ultimate living destination, until I hiked over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge one Sunday afternoon with the wife and kids and into paradise. Yes, the beaches of Manatee and Sarasota counties. I'm actually kind of jealous. Don't get me wrong, Indian Rocks Beach rocks. I know, stupid, but hey, it was just a quick thought. Regardless, we wondered over to Anna Maria Island to check it out, have some lunch and perhaps watch a little football. Viola! We found the perfect place. But it actually wasn't a sports bar, or was it? Stand by, my dear and soon-to-be very loyal readers. Lobstahs Restaurant and Lounge reminds me of an extremely popular restaurant up in our neck of the woods called Crabby Bills, only Lobstahs is nicer. No offense to Crabby Bill's, but Lobstahs appeared to us to be more formal. Good thing or bad thing? Who's to say? Both restaurants are known for their seafood, and that's all that really matters. Although the dining area at Lobstahs was quite nice, with white cloth napkins and all, we felt comfortable in our casual beach attire. No, I would not wear my bathing suit in the place, but casual beach wear, sure. The atmosphere was pleasant. There are televisions around the bar if one wanted to down a couple cold ones and watch some football. The only thing I didn't like on this Sunday afternoon was the restaurant's music selection. It didn't fit the atmosphere, but that's an easy fix. I know the place is called Lobstahs but I chose to stray away from the obvious choice and try something different. I went with the

Lobstahs Restaurant & Lounge 5337 Gulf Dr. • Holmes Beach (941) 779-1000

fish and chips. It was the perfect choice. It was prepared perfectly and tasted great. My wife ordered her signature choice - is that such a thing - the Greek salad. She loved it,

no really, she did. It was just the way she likes it, and she even brought home the leftovers. I failed to mention that I had a cup of the Lobster Bisque prior to our meal. As one would expect from a place called Lobstahs, it was delicious. I should have ordered a bowl or two. My son kept it simple, ordering the Bacon Burger. Keep in mind, folks, it was midafternoon, so our appetites hadn't peaked. That's why we chose to keep it somewhat light. My son really liked the Bacon Burger, with its crisp bacon and cheddar cheese. And, yes, I stole a bite to see for myself how good it was. It was. My daughter kept even it lighter than the rest of us and simply had a bowl of the Broccoli Cheese soup. She loved it, but not to discount the chef, she loves anything with cheese. Other items on the menu are, of course, seafood items such as filet of grouper, maple grilled salmon, linguini with clams, seafood

Anna Maria. There's also a variety of salads and a great choice of appetizers, from calamari and oysters to wings and, yes, lobster nachos. Damn, why didn't I order those? Next time, for sure. Be sure to ask about Lobstahs' specials. Red snapper and lobster tempura with sesame sautéed spinach and sweet and sour Aubergine relish were a couple of the specials the day we were there. Our server, Christina, was very attentive and pleasant and had our food to our table more quickly than expected. It really was a great experience, from the food and the atmosphere to the cold beers and the NFL that I was able to sneak a peek at, in between my daughter and son's riveting stories. You know what I'm talking about. Seeing my interest in the football games going on, Christina told us about the Tiki Hut Sportsah Bar, the outdoor enclosed sports bar in the rear of the restaurant. Now we're talking. With $1 drafts and pool and shuffle board, it's a very cool addition to Lobstahs. A couple of other highlights worth mentioning are Lobstahs happy hour, Monday through Friday, from 3-6 p.m., their Tuesday and Thursday lobster tail dinner, all day and all night for only $15.99, and their football package and Sunday drink specials. Lobstahs really is a cool joint. Go check it out.
