E
very year, the Circus Ring of Fame Foundation recognizes those persons who have made a significant contribution to the circus. This year will mark the 28th anniversary of this tradition, with new members to be inducted in a ceremony Jan. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ring site at St. Armands Circle. Last year’s inductees included trapeze artist Pinito del Oro; Big Apple Circus co-founder Paul Binder; former circus owner and animal trainer Ian Garden Sr.; and the Theron family, known for their high-energy bicycling feats. Candidates for this honor may be nominated by anyone. They may be an individual or a group of two or more, who are either active or retired, living or dead. The candidate’s involvement
with the circus must have been for a substantial number of years and the candidate must have played a major role in the circus. Former inductees vote for the candidates.

Mote sells farm-raised caviar operation Mote Marine Laboratory and Southeast Venture Holdings announce sale of Mote’s sustainable caviar business
M
ote Marine Laboratory recently announced the sale of its Siberian sturgeon and caviar production operation to Southeast Venture Holdings, LLC (Seven Holdings). “This sale marks the first major private business spin-off from Mote research and achieves a major goal for the Laboratory’s 2020 Vision & Strategic Plan,” said Dr. Michael Crosby, Mote president & CEO. The sale brings to fruition the initial research investment Mote made in sturgeon aquaculture back in 2001, said Dr. Kevan Main, manager of Mote’s Marine and Freshwater Aquaculture Research Program. “Mote made an investment in stur-
geon aquaculture operations because we wanted to demonstrate that growing fish for food could be done using environmentally sound systems and practices that would also be financially feasible on a commercial scale,” Main said. “Over the years, Mote has led the development of recirculating aquaculture technologies and has demonstrated that these systems are both environmentally sound and financially feasible to operate. Now, the Siberian sturgeon farm is ready for the next step in growth that this agreement with Seven Holdings will bring.” The sale includes an agreement for research commercialization and investment into Mote’s ongoing sustainable, land-based recirculating marine and

freshwater aquaculture research at the 200-acre Mote Aquaculture Park in eastern Sarasota County. The investment will significantly increase Mote’s ability to continue and expand the scientific studies needed to discover and improve sustainable technologies for growing seafood for human consumption and restocking declining and depleted fish species in the wild. Steve Queior, president & CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, said the sale will continue to help diversify the region’s economy. “Innovations like this one, which brings Mote’s world-class research out of the lab and into the marketplace, are just the types of partnerships we envision to help strengthen Sarasota’s economy. We see great potential for future partnerships between Mote and the business community,” said Queior.

B
illionaire fashion designer Michael Kors recently filed plans with the town of Longboat Key for the home he and his husband, Lance LaPere, intend to build on land that was purchased over a year ago. The two lots, located at 6271 and 6281 Gulf of Mexico Dr., at the north end of Longboat Key, were purchased for $6 million in November, 2013. According to documents filed with the town, the construction of the home itself is projected to cost $2.2 million. The blueprints call for a contemporary two-story design, complete with several outdoor decks, an elevator and a huge 70’ by 20’ pool. The ground floor will feature a nearly 1,300 square foot screened room and tons of garage space. The second floor plans include space
for staff, with a living room, three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a laundry room. The home includes four other bedrooms, in addition to the 700 square foot master bedroom. The home will also feature a media room, a large gourmet kitchen and an open living room and dining room plan with plenty of windows to take in the views. The 6,306 square foot home was designed by New York architects Stelle Lomont Rouhani, a firm that specializes in high-quality, sustainable beach dwellings. They are known for their sleek, ultra-contemporary designs, but try to build on a smaller scale whenever possible. Kors is probably best known for his universally popular brand of handbags, with their ubiquitous MK logos, which
usually sell for hundreds of dollars. He became well-known after serving as a judge on Lifetime’s Project Runway show for 10 seasons, and his brand is taking advantage of its popularity, with unprecented growth and expansion of its stores in 2014. Michael Kors stores worldwide now number well over 500, including locations in Sarasota’s Mall at University Town Center and an outlet store at Ellenton Premium Outlets.

The Island Spice: Simply Superb
I
f there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that looks are deceiving. On my latest jaunt to the beach, I spotted an eatery called The Island Spice. From the exterior, the place looked like almost every other beach joint. Truthfully, nothing about the place stuck out. No offense. But what I found interesting was that it said Indian cuisine on the sign. Hmmm, really? I love Indian food. It's probably one of my favorite types of cuisine. OK, food. But will the typical beachgoer, local or tourist, want Indian cuisine? I mean, let's face facts. The majority of tourists want seafood. Three words: fried grouper sandwich. You get my point. So, I had to scratch my head as to why someone would open an Indian restaurant on the beach. Well, read on, my dear friends, and I'll tell you why, because I stopped in to try it out and oh my God, what? The food was AMAZING. Let me tell you something. My wife and I dined at Euphemia Haye because everyone talked about how great it is. Truthfully, I wasn't impressed. I had to send my steak back, if that tells you anything. But perhaps they deserve another shot. But moving on‌. At The Island Spice, I tried a couple of items. First up was the Masala Dosa, an enormous foot-and-a-half sized crepe filled with potato and spices and served with Sambar coconut and tomato chutney for dipping. It was delicious and very clever, perfect for two or more people to start out
with. Way too much for one person, unless you make it a meal with the vegetable option. I also sampled the Lamb Curry, which was tender, boneless lamb cubes cooked in aromatic Indian spices, and the

Butter Chicken, roasted marinated boneless chicken breast cooked in mild spices. The lamb was delicious, but the Butter Chicken was seriously the best chicken I have ever had in my life. I honestly didn't believe it was chicken. It was so moist, it was crazy. I asked how they get the chicken so moist and I was interested to learn that they cook it very slowly in a clay oven. What? IKR? It's like a very large clay pot for slow roasting. And, yes, I just kept eating. The food was so damn good, it was amazing. To close out my meal, I had the Tandoori Chicken, half a chicken served with rice, prepared again in the clay oven with Makhani sauce. Seriously, this was the best food I have had in a long time. In addition to my meal, I had a mint cooler to drink, which was made with fresh lemon juice and mint. I wrapped up everything with a Mango Lassi. I'm not going to say anything about this drink. Just go to The Island Spice and order one and you will see what I mean. I don't care where you live. You have to

The exterior isn't much to look at but the interior is well designed and comfortable. I was there during the day and they had the local news station on the television. I can only hope the owners turn it off at night and dim the lights to give their diners one of the best dining experiences they will ever have. I freakin' loved the joint. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was its name. The Clay Oven would be better suited. On a side note, The Island Spice has a large glutenfree and vegetarian/vegan offering and an array of Indian beers to choose from. Overall, grade A. No question!
