Can a former LBK resident go head-to-head with Groupon, Craigslist and Angieslist? He says he can. By Deborah Altman

It's not arrogance, it's confidence," says former Longboat Key resident, Adam McLean, about his plan to take on three Internet giants: Groupon, Craigslist and Angieslist. To that end, McLean has launched three new websites: Codyslist.com, a classified website; McPons.com, a coupon website; and AdamJofi.com, a referral website. "The first step is believing it can be done. I've always said failure is never an option. Even if you have to shut down a business, as long as you have learned from the experience, it'll help you with the long term goal of achieving success," said McLean.

His classified website, Codyslist.com, is named after his 13-year-old son, Cody. It was actually created a few years ago, when McLean's newspapers, along with thousands of others, began losing classified revenue to Craigslist.org. McLean, who owns two community newspapers, knew he had to make a change. "Daily newspapers were folding, partly due to the economy, but they were equally impacted by Craigslist," said McLean. "It was free, why wouldn't someone place their ad on Craigslist instead of having to pay to have it in the local paper? I understood that but it didn't mean I had to like it." longboatkeynews To underground or not... By Scott Lancaster

A

debate that has been waged in the town of Longboat Key for over two decades has some new numbers associated with its cost, and it isn’t pretty. A report that was presented to the Longboat Key Town Commission last month puts the estimated cost of burying power and utility poles and lines throughout the island at just over $42 million. This includes a 15 percent “contingency fee” in case construction costs end up higher than expected. There is also an option to only underground the poles along Gulf of Mexico Drive, but that project still comes with an estimated price tag of $23.4 million, contingency fee included. While most Longboat Key residents agree that the undergrounding of power lines and poles and other utilities is aesthetically pleasing, the question remains as to how the project should be funded, and if it should be limited to the less expensive option of only undergrounding along Gulf of Mexico Drive. Some feel the project should be all or nothing; if the town neglects the neighbor-

hoods on the island and focuses only on Gulf of Mexico Drive, they feel the neighborhood undergrounding will never get done. The options for funding the project include either a uniform ad valorem property tax assessment for all Longboat homeowners,

or a non-ad valorem assessment based on the benefit each homeowner receives from the undergrounding on a case-by-case basis. Property owners whose utilities are already underground would foot less of the bill than someone who is receiving the benefits of having their utilities buried. Once Longboat Key commissioners hammer out the details, the issue will likely be put to the voters in the November general election.

Cannons Marina honored by Grady-White Boats

Longboat Key real estate continues to hum along

Longboat Key’s Cannons Marina, located at 6040 Gulf of Mexico Dr., has earned Grady-White Boats' Bronze Anchor Award for outstanding customer satisfaction. The marina was also awarded membership in Grady-White's Admiral's Circle for the 16th year in a row. The Bronze Anchor Award goes to the top three dealers in customer satisfaction among all Grady-White dealers worldwide. Admiral's Circle members must have at least $2 million in retail sales for the model year and have customer satisfaction index scores of at least a 9.5 on a 10point scale, as rated in actual customer surveys. “Cannons Marina is dedicated to participating alongside Grady-White in an effort to offer the most enjoyable boat-buying experience possible for every person walking through the door,” said Joey Weller, Grady-White’s vice president of sales.

The INFINITY Longboat Key condominum project is finally set to join Aria as Longboat Key’s newest luxury condo units after years of planning. INFINITY, at 4765 Gulf of Mexico Dr., will have residences that range in size from 3,380 square feet up to the 5,500 square foot penthouse. Of the 11 units that will comprise INFINITY, five are already under contract. Community amenities will include a clubhouse, fitness center, a beachside heated infinity pool, a private hot tub overlooking the beach and a lighted tennis court. The developer of INFINITY, Crossgate Partners LLC, anticipates the construction of the new residences will take about a year. The price of the condos ranges from around $2-$5 million. Construction of the five-story Aria building is well underway at 2251 Gulf of Mexico Dr. The 16 planned units are completely sold out, with construction set to be finished in the fall.

siestakeynews Interim beach renourishment project underway By Tamara Leonard

espite concerns by Siesta Key residents, the Lido Key dredging project that has been debated for months finally began and is expected to be completed by mid-March. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards of sand from the New Pass shoal will be dredged to renourish Lido Beach from the effects of 2012’s Tropical Storm Debby. The Army Corps of Engineers originally proposed taking over a million cubic yards of sand from a shoal in Big Pass, the waterway that separates Lido and Siesta keys. Many Siesta Key property owners opposed this plan, out of fear that the dredging would interrupt the natural flow of sand to the island’s best asset, Siesta Beach. At the urging of Sarasota County Commissioner and Siesta Key resident Nora Patterson, the commission agreed to pay up to $50,000 for an independent engineering firm to review the Big Pass dredging project. In the meantime, the Army Corps of

Siesta Key

Engineers has moved forward with an “interim” plan of dredging from New Pass. The expected cost of this project is around $3.6 million, with most of it paid by the federal government. It will replenish an almost twomile stretch of shore. "This is a significant restoration project that the residents, business owners and visitors to Lido Key have needed for years," said Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin.

Siesta Beach renovation plan for Spring Breakers Sarasota County has announced the construction schedule for the Siesta Beach Park renovations for March 7 through April 9, to better address the issues associated with the increased number of visitors to the beach for Spring Break. During this time, all parking facilities will be open. In addition, the West Historic Pavilion, restrooms and concessions, and the new playgrounds and shelters will also be open. There will also be additional temporary concessions at Esplanade. The East Concessions will be closed.

F

ollowing a $1.4 million renovation, the historic Bradenton Beach Bridge Street Pier officially reopened to the public in February. The pier required extensive repairs following damage sustained in 2012 when boats broke free from a nearby anchorage during Tropical Storm Sandy. Renovations began in August 2014 by Duncan Seawall, Dock and Boatlift LLC. Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale served as Pier Team Chair/Facilitator and said, “We’ve been waiting a long time for this historic pier to be repaired, upgraded and reopened for our residents, visitors, boaters and fishermen to enjoy. Duncan Seawall exceeded our expectations and construction was done on schedule.” Improvements to the pier included new

composite decking and benches, LED lighting, wooden and aluminum railings, three cupolas and a large pavilion with a swing at the T-end of the pier. Also installed were underwater lights to attract bait fish, dolphin piles on the south side of the pier to protect it from future boat collisions, repaved parking lot leading to the pier and repainting of the clock tower, bait shop, showers, bathroom areas and CastN-Cage Restaurant. “Business at the Cast-NCage Restaurant is steadily picking up thanks to the reopening of the pier,” said owner Roland Pena. Originally constructed in 1921, the 94-year-old pier is a Bradenton Beach icon, a focal point of the city and a popular spot for local fishermen. No fishing license is needed to fish on the pier because the city holds a license.

Cover Story continued from page 3 thing, and then my wife said, "How about McPons?" Taking the Mc from their last name and merging it with coupons. "I know it's not the best name in the world but somehow it works," said McLean. McPons allows consumers to save money by using their smartphones to visit McPons.com, click on the city or county and category and pull up the coupon. They can then show the coupon on their phone to the business or restaurant to redeem the coupon, or print the coupons at home.

McPons charges advertisers $50 a month to feature their coupon ad on McPons.com. Unlike Groupon, where consumers have to pay to buy the coupon, consumers do not have to buy a coupon on McPons. They are able to save money just by showing the coupon on their phone. McLean says he understands why Groupon is in financial trouble. "It's a poor working model. I hate to say it that way, but it is. They ask businesses to offer a huge discount, which ultimately affects their bottom line, many times causing them to lose money and not gain new customers. There are a lot of complaints from business owners who say that the customer comes into their business one time to use the coupon they purchased on Groupon but they never come back to pay the normal price. So there is no repeat business and the cost to drive the customer into their business is too high. It's just not an effective model, in my opinion." According to McLean, it doesn't cost the consumer anything on McPons.com to use the coupons, and they don't have to buy the discount. It only costs the business or advertiser $50 a month to attract new customers.

McLean's most recent website, AdamJofi.com, is structured to go head-tohead with Angieslist.com, which was recently valued at a billion dollars. But McLean has dissected the weaknesses in Angieslist, also. "The major problem that I see with Angieslist is that they charge consumers to use their site to find home improvement

News I

entertainment help or services," said McLean. "That alone decreases the number of potential customers for the businesses that pay to be on the site to get new customers." McLean admits the site works for businesses that advertise but not at the full potential if Angieslist didn't charge consumers to be members. The majority of consumers are not going to be willing to pay to be a member just to find a painter, plumber or whatever they need help with. On AdamJofi.com, there is no charge for the consumer to go on the site to find home improvement help, legal, medical, dental and other professional services. The only charge is to the business, which pays $50 a month to be a member. In addition, McLean Media, McLean's company, limits the number of contractors or service companies to only one to three per category. "Consumers don't have all day to sift through numerous contractors. There is a reason why you should get three estimates, so you can get the best price and best service. We look for three of the best service companies to give the consumer great choices when looking for a particular service company. McLean, who took his first

name Adam and his middle name Jofi to create the name of the site, describes AdamJofi.com as a merger between Angieslist, 1-800-Ask Gary, and Home Advisor. "AdamJofi.com is a referral website that helps consumers find the best professional help in the area. We consider our members to be the 'dream team' of their industries," said McLean. McLean stated that AdamJofi.com is policed by his company and if a member receives too many complaints over a specific amount of time, they are removed from the site. McLean plans to create awareness of the three sites and prove the success of his working model in Tampa Bay before expanding into other markets, where he plans to sell franchises. Locally, McLean Media will be running television commercials to promote the sites in addition to other marketing efforts. McLean knows it's going to be a tough and long road to achieve success with his websites but he understands that achieving success is never easy. "I consider it a failure when you don't try. Success has to be earned. For me, I love the challenge. It's what I do and who I am."
