New Bayway Bridge open for business After years of planning and construction, the new Pinellas Bayway Bridge opened last month to great fanfare.

C

onstruction of the new $41 million Pinellas Bayway Bridge, a four-lane, fixed span bridge that replaces the previous 50-year-old two-lane drawbridge, was completed right on schedule last month.

The Pinellas Bayway Bridge connects Isla del Sol and Tierra Verde with St. Pete Beach. The new 65-foot high bridge is high enough to allow boats to pass underneath without impeding vehicular traffic.

Ashley Quaid was the project manager working with the contractor of the bridge, Orion Marine Construction, Inc., “The existing bascule bridge was deteriorating rapidly and was in need of major rehabilitation. The high level fixed

span bridge alternative was chosen as a means to provide steady flow and reduce long term maintenance costs.

The speed limit was not increased for the new bridge,” said Quaid.

The old Pinellas Bayway Bridge, completed in 1962, now resides as part of the South County Reef, one of Pinellas County’s 43 reef sites sprinkled offshore.

The new bridge construction began in February, 2012, with planning by the Florida Department of Transportation going back to 2010. The official opening of the bridge was commemorated on Oct. 17, with the Bayway Bridge Bash.

The Bash featured a pool party, the lighting of the bridge and a 5K run.

here are painters, and then, there are painters who turn their works into pieces of art. Dennis White is one of those painters, or should we say, artists.

"My idea was to burn the staircase to match the dark wood floors. In order to achieve the look of the floor, I couldn't just stain it, because of the darkness of the floor. I had to burn the staircase with a propane torch to match the floor," White explained, referring to a project he completed in St. Petersburg. "I like to go after the more complex and challenging jobs that either no one else does or that were not done well the first time."

hen you walk through the front door, you look around and go, wow, this place has it.

Has what? Has it all: the design, the atmosphere, and what I quickly found out at Jackie's, the service and most definitely, the food.

The atmosphere is that of a casual yet upscale restaurant in the heart of St. Pete Beach. The addition of Jackie's Bistro on Corey Avenue has revitalized a once floundering downtown St. Pete Beach. The beach town needs to present Chef Jackie with an award for saving downtown.

I sat in a cozy booth so I could be comfortable and take it all in. I was immediately greeted by my server, who was quick to take my drink order.

On his return, he rattled off the specials, which rarely do I order, let alone pay attention to, and this day was no different.

Hey, I never said I was perfect.

I quickly noticed Jackie's version of the classic French Onion Soup. I had to try it.

And wanting to sample a couple different dishes, I also went with the Pulled Pork Nachos (slow roasted cinnamon rubbed pork, pulled with blueberry chipotle BBQ on home-made chips with Asian slaw). It says on their

menu that this dish will blow you away and you know what? It did. It was freakin' awesome, my dearly beloved diners. No, I mean it. It really was.

And because I was desperately craving pork on this day, I also ordered the pork sliders. I know, venture out and try something else, right? Next time I'm doing all seafood. But I couldn't resist the temptation of pork sliders. I mean, after all, I am a Southerner who loves his pork.

Looking back, I wish I would have ordered one of the main entrees, especially the seafood or beef entrees. So stupid of me, but I was in the mood for pork and both the nachos and the sliders were to-die-for.

So I was very content and pleased.

The atmosphere comes complete with a sax player and an inviting interior. The service was impeccable and the food was

out of this world. I could rattle off a few more of the items on their menu, but you are much better off viewing the entire menu yourself on Jackie’s website at: www.jackiesoncoreybistroandcatering.com.

Jackie’s on Corey also offers a Sunday Bottomless Mimosa Brunch from 9 a.m. til 2 p.m. that is not to be missed.

By the way, I did wash it all down with a frosty cold cerveza. Wait, Jackie's Bistro isn't Mexican, but you get my point.

the Undertow, decided to open a restaurant in Clearwater Beach, the concept was simple.

"The best way to describe it is, it's an industrial, Key West-style fish house," said Faust when describing her new Shucker's Seafood Grille, due to open Dec. 1 at the foot of the Sand Key Bridge.

"I come from a hospitality family. I've always had an interest in restaurants and I've worked in restaurants and bars. It's in my blood," said Faust. "I had the opportunity to make the acquaintance of Bill Loder, founder of Crabby Bill's, and he was a big influence on me. I love what he has done by putting out a great quality product at a reasonable price and I wanted take his concept and add my own twist to it."

However, Faust makes it very clear that the Loder family is not involved in her new restaurant endeavor.

"We are going to have an old-style oyster bar where the guys are actually shucking the oysters in front of customers, and a very large bar providing frozen drinks, and we are going to have a good wine list, so you can come in your bathing suit or cover-up and flip flops and still get a high quality

meal, whether you want a grouper sandwich or stone crabs or prime rib. We want to make it fun," said Faust.

As Faust puts it, she's created Shucker's for customers who simply want to live the dream in Key West style.

Former pilot is flying high with Redington Shores coffee house Matt Olafsen, the former jet pilot for the Government of Guinea Equatorial, the equivalent to piloting Air Force One, recently opened probably one of the nicest coffee houses I have seen.

What's so nice about Olafsen's new Gypsy Souls in Redington Shores? It's not just the fact you can have a cup of freshly roasted coffee in the back courtyard overlooking the beautiful Intracoastal, but it's also the design of the interior that has made it so warm and inviting.

"For years, I have been living like a gypsy, living out of my suitcase as a pilot. Now that I am permanently living in Tampa, the timing was perfect for opening the coffee house," said Olafsen, describing how he came up with the name of the coffee house.

In addition to the courtyard in the rear of Gypsy Souls, the coffee house, which actually is a former house, also has a charming seating area in the front and a nice size work area for those looking to plug in and get to work in a quiet, relaxing environment.

Olafsen said they plan to have live acoustic music soon but are looking for more of the real artists, not the typical beach-type music that is offered at most bars. Open mics and poetry readings are a couple of the events in the works.

Gypsy Soul is located at 17465 Gulf Blvd. in Redington Shores. It is open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

1st annual Run in the Sun sponsored by Cafe de Marco Cafe de Marco, the new Cuban restaurant located at 17001 Gulf Blvd. in North Redington Beach, along with the Malibu Resort Hotel, is sponsoring the 1st annual Run in the Sun Poker Run for motorcycles and custom cars on Nov. 22. Proceeds from the event will benefit St. Jude Hospital.

21st Annual Fall King of the Beach Fishing Tournament and Festival

TREASURE ISLAND - Now in its sixth year, Sanding Ovations is Treasure Island's Master Cup Sand Sculpting Competition and Music Festival, a four-day competition of 10 sand sculpting masters from throughout North America, Europe and Asia, who create astonishing works of art using nothing but sand, water and lots of their own imagination. Sanding Ovations is a free annual event held on the weekend before Thanksgiving at Treasure Island, the Sand Sculpture Capital of Florida.

This year’s festival will be held Nov. 1923 on the beach at 104th Avenue & Gulf Boulevard.

Kicking off the festivites is a “Party with the Sculptors,” Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bilmar Beach Resort, 10650 Gulf Blvd. You can hang out with the sculptors, taste beers, and enjoy munchies from Sloppy Joe’s, while Scott Jogwick strums his guitar, and $10 covers it all.

Madeira Beach - The Old Salt Fishing Foundation presents the 21st Annual Fall King of the Beach (KOTB) Fishing Tournament, to be held Nov. 6, 7 and 8.
