editor’s letter
Rocking & Rolling into The thing about rock ‘n roll music and the type of dancing one accompanies it to, is often the rhythm is so heart-pumpingly up-tempo, so animated and unruly that one is hardly able to control one’s limbs because they’re pumping so ecstatically to the music.
2
012 has certainly been a year of twists, heart-leaping swings, rollicking splits and swooping floor-slides for an association that might run the risk of being thought a little old-fashioned. But, with a maestro of an executive committee composing and writing the new score, the team here at shop-sa are just loving playing the music. And we intend to carry on making you – our lively members - be seen centre floor and in the spotlight as we turn up the volume for 2013.
Much of the lessons of this past year have seen us returning ‘back to basics’ and getting our steps down pat. There might not have been as many of the frills experience as of the past, but as anyone knows showmanship doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve got rhythm. Under the guidance of the board of directors and more specifically the working committee, shop-sa head office has regrouped and revised and set out once again from a more solid foundation. The year 2013 promises to be as exhilarating as this one. And like I mentioned previously, we are turning up the volume… the difference being our professional “sound system” with the ability to handle future power surges, where you can rest assured the speakers aren’t about to blow. So get your brill cream out, unless you want your hair to blow back, and practise some moves in front of your (business) mirror this festive season please, because we are going to ROCK with you into 2013 like never before!
The shop-sa offices will officially be closed from 24.12.12 – 04.01.13.
Happy holidays from the Team!

chairman’s
report
Acknowledgment Hans Servas is Chairman of shop-sa. He was appointed in February 2012 and together with the Working Committee of the Board of Directors, he continues to strategise, guide and mentor the shop-sa team.
Progress update Since my appointment in February, the Board and I have had to take specific actions to maintain the status quo of shop-sa and manoeuvre against impending financial crises. Set out below are some of those actions and our strategy going into 2013.
A
t a strategy meeting called by Eugene Kleynhans, in February this year, it became clear that shop-sa was heading for a financial crisis, which had to be averted.
To achieve this, the following immediate and medium term actions were taken: 1. A Working Committee was formed to facilitate quick decision-making and drive the process, meeting on a monthly basis and/or as required. The members who make up this Working Committee are myself, Allan Thompson, Ryan Bidgood, Gary Pickford, Bill Bayley, Herman Botha (resigned) and of late Dion Botma. 2. Eugene Kleynhans and Trish Swanepoel suggested and agreed to take voluntary retrenchment packages. This obviously impacted Cash Flow negatively. 3. The responsibilities at the Office were reviewed and re-organised, with the remaining staff assigned with the daily operation of the office. Subsequently the following priorities were set and actioned: 1. Stabilise and motivate the internal organisation/staff. 2. Scrutinise and reduce expenses 3. Focus on the Magazine and Database but continue Events and maintain Membership income. My more specific objectives were to clarify the Tax status including the VDP process of shop-sa; review and change job descriptions www.shop-sa.co.za
and KPA’s for the staff, create an employee’s handbook and review the overall corporate governance at shop-sa. I am happy to report that all the above are actioned and in progress. 1. All staff have been incentivised in order to achieve monthly magazine income targets by canvassing new and existing advertisers. 2. Bill André and his team started the cleaning-up of the database (there are three), which was largely achieved. Now one database will be created on Civi CRM, a fast and flexible new system. 3. Mercédes Westbrook and the team focussed on and completed the “new look” My Office magazine, for which the response has been excellent. Other matters dealt with and to be noted were: • Clare Matthes has replaced Lisa Dewberry as the new sub-editor and I believe that Clare will be an asset to shop-sa. • The positive interaction between shopsa and PIFSA (now Printing SA), lead to shop-sa joining PIFSA as associated members, giving our members access to great facilities and excellent rates for specific services. • Board Members who have resigned are Dave Jameson, Herman Botha and Baron Combrink. To all, our heartfelt thanks for their time and contribution. It is evident that the actions taken during the last few months of the financial year now tabled, didn’t affect the final result but certainly arrested the downward trend. However, I am pleased to report that the 1st Quarter of 2012/13 shows a small profit and
that we are on the right track. Going forward, the committee has taken a conservative view and set the budget for 2012/13 accordingly. The main objective is to make shop-sa an association which adds value for its members and advertisers and to increase the circulation of My Office to make the magazine even more attractive to existing and new advertisers. We are in volatile times, both politically and economically and it is now even more critical and important to be part of an industry body, like shop-sa. On behalf of the board and members I extend our gratitude to our staff and working committee for a “job well done”, not to mention the regions who kept the flag flying so successfully. May the imminent 2013 be a prosperous one for all.
Hans

GameChanger:
Work will never be the same again
What do you get when you synergise decades of experience in office furnishing with award-winning design of international standard, an exceptionally talented production team obsessed with quality, and a state-of-the-art local production facility dedicated to environmental responsibility and local job creation?

T
he answer? GameChanger – a product that will revolutionise office spaces and ensure work will never be the same again.
Angel Shack created this extraordinary new range of cool and simple workstations, positioned at the cutting edge of the latest trends in work spaces. GameChanger is therefore crafted to global design standards, manufactured to the highest quality, produced locally to contain costs and create jobs, and created to be exceptionally kind to the environment. “Businesses need to optimise office space priced at a premium, take advantage of the smaller desk footprint required by the use of flat screens, laptops and iPads, and create multi-functional spaces for increasingly mobile workers,” comments Grant Andrews who, based on more than 40 years of experience in the office furniture industry, recently formed a joint venture with Angel Shack. At the forefront of this global workspace evolution is European designer, Stefan Brodbeck of brodbeck design. Brodbeck is an internationally acclaimed German industrial designer with over 30 design awards to his name, including the acclaimed Red Dot award. Brodbeck is responsible for the design mastery behind GameChanger, which takes ergonomics to a new level: “bespoke ergonomics”. “Whether you sit and work, stand and work, use a filing cabinet or an iPad docking station, meet for creative brainstorm sessions or simply socialise, the GameChanger range of cool and simple workstations, crafted for all generations, work the way you do,” explains Brodbeck. “Each workstation can be customised, personalised and accessorised
entirely, resulting in engaging spaces that encourage creativity and productivity.” Angel Shack has reinvented itself into a world-class proudly South African manufacturing facility, with significantly increased design and manufacturing capacity and state-of-the-art equipment. Considerable time, effort and money has been invested to establish an environmentally-responsible manufacturing process, using only timber sourced from companies certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and ensuring all desks and accessories are produced with no volatile organic compounds (VOC) to reduce indoor air pollution. Furthermore, Angel Shack cares about the air you breathe and that is why the laminates and coatings used in Angel Shack desks and accessories are certified Volatile Organic Compound – free (VOC-free). Generally furniture is made of melamine which emits VOC’s over a long period of time into the indoor environment. Exposure occurs through the air we breathe from the evaporation of these VOC’s into the air from products. Many vocs are irritants and cause headaches, eye, nose and throat irritation and dizziness. Long term exposure to certain vocs can lead to chronic diseases due to
their toxicity. Angel Shack has embarked on a comprehensive sustainability audit, which will underscore its commitment to transforming the company into an ecoresponsible one. But perhaps the most exciting aspect of GameChanger is the fact that this world-class range of office furniture will be produced right here in South Africa, not only for the local market, but also for export into Africa and selected parts of Europe. This ensures impressive cost benefits by eliminating high import duties, freight and handling costs, and exchange rate vagaries. Simultaneously, it will create local jobs, eliminate long lead times and stimulate economic growth. In line with its gamechanging nature, the GameChanger range will also be accessible in a novel way: buy online or buy from friends, who can earn a commission, which will spread the economic benefits even more widely through the community. GameChanger will not only place South African companies at the forefront of the evolution of work spaces in our modern society, it will position South Africa at the head of global office furniture design and manufacture. m

Windows 8 –
should you care?
T
he launch in October this year of Windows 8 was heralded as a great thing - something to change the industry and return Microsoft to its former position of leader of the IT pack. It’s interesting that most of the focus around the launch was not actually on the operating system (OS) itself but more of an analysis about what the OS means for Microsoft.
The inevitable and tiresome comparison between Google (Android), Apple (iOS and OS X) and Microsoft were hauled out of the closet (where they had been placed only a week or two before), dusted and rehashed. I even heard the question “Will this be the Apple killer” several times. A volume of bits and bytes were expended on this discussion as pundits pretended they knew what they were talking about and spewed forth their visionary views of how this would change the industry. I was sucked into the hype and debate but soon realised that the more immediate question around Windows 8 is whether or not it will be adopted quickly and what the OS really means to users, both consumer and corporate. Corporate first: The word on the budget-tightened street is that there is no compelling reason to upgrade. It offers little in the way of major improvements that are a deal maker when choosing between Windows 7 and Windows 8. In fact it does the opposite of offer a smooth transition, from a user interface perspective. People hate change and the transition to Windows 8 will require a great deal of change management for everyone to get used to the new “tiles interface” and the fact that,
6
my office magazine
horror of horrors, there is no Start button, a fixture since Windows 95. This aspect cannot be underestimated as productivity can decline significantly while someone figures out how to use the new interface. Consumers will of course be getting Windows 8 as part of the package on most new PCs, laptops and Ultrabooks that they purchase. There is a choice to take Windows 7 instead and an upgrade path is available. If you enjoy having conversations with your friends or peers about cool stuff then you will no doubt want to put Windows 8 on your current devices. Is there any other convincing excuse? Not really, although there is a caveat. Windows 8 does push Microsoft’s ecosystem a little further into the modern world where they seem to be playing catch up with Google. SME’s are in pretty much the same boat as consumers and there is little reason to move to another OS if your current one is providing you with hassle-free computing, which Windows 7 really does seem to do. However, Microsoft is showing convincing signs that it has awoken from its slumber and put into play a long-term strategy that even if it does appear to be largely reactive, should pay dividends. The ecosystem that they have built with SkyDrive, Windows Store, Office 365, Windows 8, Windows Phone and hardware products like the Windows Slate, are a convincing play for returning them to domination. So will you upgrade to Windows 8 because there is little else that currently makes any sense in the context of a consumer operating system? It’s just a matter of when for you and for Microsoft - it’s just a matter of time. m Vol 96 - Issue

Hand-print Christmas ‘wish’ tree: You will need lots of green construction paper, a piece of brown construction paper (for the tree trunk), a piece of yellow construction paper (for the star), pencil, scissors, glue, glitter, glitter glue, and paper ornaments to glue on the tree. Trace the child’s hand on a piece of green construction paper. Cut out the hand print. Fold the wrist over. Make a lot of paper hands (the number you’ll need depends on the size of your tree). Draw a tree shape on a large piece of paper. Cut out a small rectangle of dark brown paper (this will be the tree trunk) and glue below the tree. Glue the hand prints together in a tree shape, gluing the folded part of the wrist to the background. Start at the bottom of the tree. Starting with the second row, make the fingers overlap the next hand a little bit. Cut out a yellow star for the top of the tree. Glue it on the tree. Decorate your tree with glitter, glitter glue, or paper ornaments. Write a Christmas wish for yourself, family, friends, world peace or the environment on each ornament and hang it in your home. m

how to
Perfect presents Beautiful gift wrapping does more than conceal its contents: it’s another way of showing the recipient that they are special. There are lots of little tricks to papering the perfect present. What You’ll Need The right materials make a huge difference in painless present-wrapping. While the tradition lends itself to endless variations, the basic materials are: • Paper. Select a medium-weight gift wrap in a sheet large enough to cover the item, plus a few extra inches to spare. Thin, dime-store paper, while inexpensive, can crumple and tear during wrapping, and premium papers, though seductively beautiful, can be difficult to work with due to their heavy weight, and resistance to the adhesive of general-purpose tape. • Scissors. Sharp blades allow you slice the paper in one sweeping movement. If possible, use long paper shears for the most precise cut. • Tape. Transparent tape with a matte finish disappears when you apply it. • Ribbon. You’ll need enough ribbon to wrap around your gift length- and width-wise, plus additional inches to make a bow. Stock up on a selection of colours and styles to add variety to your packages and make your task more fun. • A gift box. If your gift isn’t already in a box, consider putting it inside one to make it easier to wrap. If you are wrapping multiple gifts, they will also be easier to stack and store until you’re ready to give them. Assemble your materials on a large table top and clear plenty of work space where you can unroll your wrapping paper. If the gift has a price tag, now is

al fresco Style and comfort are two of the key factors usually considered when purchasing outdoor furniture but the type of space requiring furniture will ultimately dictate what material components need to be used.
Outdoor furniture today is produced to take the hard knocks of the harsh sun and rain. Additional care of your furniture will make sure you’re conserving this investment.
When cleaning wicker furniture, it’s best to start with vacuuming the cushions and chair, to suck up excess dust. Then you can use a bristle brush with medium stiff bristles and warm water to wash down the chair.
Aluminium and steel furniture can be hosed down with water every now and then depending on when the furniture is used.
Available from Cane Time Wooden furniture can be wiped down with a damp cloth and polished at least every three days to ensure it keeps its shine. Most outdoor furniture can simply be sprayed down every couple of weeks but some of it will need special attention to ensure it lasts as long as possible.

tart off with a wholegrain carbohydrate base eg wholewheat bread, a seeded roll, wholewheat pita, pasta/noodles, wholewheat wrap, etc, while for longlasting brain and body power add a source of protein. Some good choices here would be lean cold meats, chicken, peanut butter, lean mince meat balls, beans, lentils, tuna, sardines, pilchards, cheese, egg, etc. Garnish with some salads and sauce, spread or topping like low fat mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, hummus or guacamole. Remember though that if you choose to use a topping, do not use margarine as well, as this increases the overall fat content. Always remember to add a fruit, either fresh or dried but most importantly do not forget the liquids - some good bets include: water, diluted pure fruit juice, low fat milk.

Remember to keep your lunch cool • Use a cool bag and pop in an icepack or freeze a carton of juice and place in with food to keep cool. • Keep in the fridge until you need to leave home if you make it in advance. • Don’t store your lunch next to a heater or in the sun.
Some ideas for mid-day munchies you can try • Small wholewheat wraps filled with grilled chicken pieces, fat-free cottage cheese, shredded lettuce and grated carrot. • Salad: Peach, chicken, greens and snow pea sprouts, cucumber, pistachio nuts, avocado and dressing (soy sauce + red wine + brown sugar + garlic). • Mini seeded rolls filled with tuna salad, tomato slices, roasted red pepper slices, red onion and olives. • Tapas & Mezze: Wholewheat pita bread cut into triangles with reduced fat feta cheese cubes, rolled up lean shaved cold meat slices/lean mince meat balls/boiled eggs and finger salads e.g. celery, snap peas, baby carrots, baby corn, cucumber, baby tomato and dips e.g. hummus, salsa, guacamole, baba ghanoush, fat-free cottage cheese, sweet chili sauce, tzatzizki. • Salad: Watermelon (diced), sliced lamb, rosemary, chili, mint, rocket, feta, olives and dressing (olive oil + lemon juice + Greek yoghurt). m

Review Tap Dancing to Work Carl Loomis Warren Buffett, the world’s greatest investor, has long had a unique relationship with Fortune magazine, thanks to his deep personal friendship with the acclaimed writer Carol Loomis. She first mentioned Buffett in print in 1966. By the mid 1970s he trusted Loomis enough that he asked her to edit his famous annual letter to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. She has been filling that role ever since, without spilling his secrets in Fortune or anywhere else. Tap Dancing to Work is the definitive history of Buffett’s business and investing career. It collects and updates the best articles Fortune has ever published about Buffett, based on extensive interviews with him from the 1960s through the 2010s. Loomis adds fresh commentary and insights that will help Buffett’s fans see his triumphs (and occasional missteps) in a new light. On a crowded shelf of books about Buffett, this one offers unprecedented access, unique information, and deep understanding. m
Music From Another Dimension - Aerosmith There has been a witch’s brew boiling for 10 years, and America’s greatest rock band is about to blow the cover off. Music From Another Dimension’s first two singles have been released simultaneously to radio. The album features 15 new tracks, including two songs that audiences in North America were treated to on the first leg of the band’s triumphant, sold-out Global Warming Tour, Oh Yeah and Legendary Child. m

car
buyers never had
it so good There is currently a school of thought in the motor industry that new cars are more affordable, and make better economic sense, than at any time over the past 30 years.
W
esbank’s executive head of sales and marketing, Chris de Kock, says that in real terms, you can replace a three-year-old car with an equivalent new car and get a more modern car with more equipment, at a monthly repayment level that is actually lower than it was three years ago.
“The reasons for this are numerous,” says De Kock. “Interest rates are at a 30-year low, and the outlook surrounding interest rates shows no concern of a significant rise, certainly over the next 24 months. Secondly, the vehicle consumer price index (CPI) is down by over 3%, whereas the overall CPI is up in virtually every other area. And as for the cars themselves, prices have not risen significantly over the past three years, but if you throw in the lower interest rate (around 3,5% lower) and the fact that the National Credit Act allows you to now finance a car over a maximum of 72 months, then your repayments are actually cheaper.” Obviously by financing a car over a longer period, the total amount of interest paid will be much greater, but De Kock says that consumers don’t seem to be bothered too much by this fact. In fact Wesbank is having a record financial year in 2012, partially due to internal cost savings, but also due to the fact that for the past 24 months there has been significant growth in the South African new car market. In August the new-car market was up by 10% over 2011, and that came after a very strong performance last year. According to De Kock, economically the ideal

time frame to keep a new vehicle works out at the three-year mark, if a vehicle is financed over a 54-month period. At this point, there is enough equity in the car’s market value to enable the consumer to settle the original financed amount, and have a sizeable deposit to enable buying a new car, usually with updates that include increased equipment levels, as most manufacturers do this to remain competitive in the market, and not see an increase in monthly repayments. But while this is true when viewing the new and used car market as a whole, buyers should still be discerning when it comes to choosing the specific model. Some cars hold their resale values much better than others, and for different reasons. When buying in the A and B categories, a general rule of thumb is that the most popular sellers will retain their re-sale values best of all. m

debt advice Acknowledgment Lauren Orritt has been involved extensively in the debt recovery business for the past 20 years from a litigation perspective as well as from the legal advisory perspective. She consults for many suppliers, manufacturers and wholesalers within the home office products industry with a view to assisting them in reducing their bad debts whilst at all times attempting to avoid litigation and court involvement.
Execution procedures in recovering a debt
T
his issue I cover issuing summons, Section 65 and garnishee orders.
In my previous article I discussed the execution of a judgement by way of Warrant of Execution and this month I discuss the alternative mode of execution being the procedure by way of section 65 against the defendant.
debt advice
When a defendant has no property or assets to attach in order to satisfy the judgement then a plaintiff can proceed to court in obtaining a section 65 order or garnishee order on the defendant’s salary. The procedure is slightly more complex than that of a warrant of execution given that the defendant is called to court on a specific date and has to account to the magistrate as to the details of his/her income and expenditure in order to enable the Magistrate to grant an appropriate garnishee order figure. Once a garnishee order has been granted by the court then the defendant’s employer is obliged to deduct the amount from the defendant’s salary every month and to pay it to the plaintiff prior to paying the defendant. The garnishee order remains in effect until such time as the debt, inclusive of the interest and

costs as awarded by the magistrate in granting judgement, have been paid. Whilst all the formal legal procedures have been discussed over the past few months, I must emphasise that it is always best for the defendant to attempt to resolve a dispute with the plaintiff or its legal representative to avoid incurring further legal costs. It is possible to settle a dispute at any stage of proceedings and an amicable settlement is always encouraged. However, the longer the defendant delays settlement of the dispute the more detrimental and costly it becomes for the defendant. m

home security
Secure your premises this holiday Whether it is a trip to the seaside or the bush, going on holiday can leave your home or business vulnerable to attack.
“S
tatistics clearly show that criminal activity increases during the holiday season and it is therefore imperative for home and business owners to take the right precautions and not let their guard down,” says Richard McGhee, sales and marketing director of ADT Security.
Before going away on holiday, Trellidor suggests: • Assess your home’s current security. Check that every door and window is secured with security gates or window barriers that aren’t damaged or corroded. In the long run it’s cheaper to replace security systems than stolen goods. • Invest in layers of security. High quality expandable security doors and burglar bars should be your first security layer. As finances allow, add further layers such as good perimeter security, burglar alarms, movement sensors, panic buttons and armed response. Remember to notify your neighbours if you are going away.
28

• Be disciplined about using your home security devices. Close and lock your garage door. Keep security gates locked at all times and set your alarm. Ensure you have burglar proofing on all windows, no matter how small or inaccessible. Don’t leave tools conveniently lying around for opportunistic criminals. Stop any regular deliveries to your home well in advance of your holiday. • Don’t buy into the myth of housing estates being completely secure. Trellidor consultants are seeing increasing reports of break-ins at ‘secure’ complexes. Take responsibility for your own security rather than leaving it to the body corporate or homeowners’ association.
least three weeks before going on holiday. Testing should be done outside of peak hours (between 8am and 4pm or after 8pm).” Barry Brown, director of Marshall Security, a security company in Durban North, says don’t ignore the intercom. If the gate buzzer or intercom rings at any hour of the day or night you should still respond to it. Brown says that some criminals use this as a method to check whether the occupants of the property are home. If it is ignored, an armed intruder may take that as an invitation to proceed to enter. If the intercom does not work, remove or repair it as soon as possible. m
“Ensure that your alarm is in working order,” says McGhee. “People tend to forget that an alarm system, like a car, has parts that age and wear out and therefore should be serviced at least once a year.” Thunderstorms can also wreak havoc on alarm systems; therefore they should be checked regularly. “December is traditionally a busy period for security companies,” adds McGhee. “so you should try and test your alarm at Vol 96 - Issue

crime alert
Cybercrime estimated at R3.7 Billion annually day on a global level. With losses totaling R1 550 per victim in South Africa in direct financial costs, cybercrime costs consumers more than a week’s worth of nutritious food necessities for a family of four. In the past 12 months, an estimated 556 million adults across the world, and 2,39 million in South Africa experienced cybercrime. This figure represents 46% of online adults, 64% in South Africa. Changing the face of cybercrime
Norton by Symantec has released the findings of its annual Norton Cybercrime Report, one of the world’s largest consumer cybercrime studies. The study is aimed at understanding how cybercrime affects consumers, and how the adoption and evolution of new technologies impacts people’s security. With findings based on self-reported experiences of more than 13 000 adults across 24 countries, the 2012 edition of the report calculates the direct costs associated with global consumer cybercrime at US $110 billion over the past 12 months. In South Africa, the costs for the same period amount to R3.7 billion. Every second, 18 adults become a victim of cybercrime, resulting in more than 1.5 million cybercrime victims each
This year’s survey shows an increase in “new” forms of cybercrime compared to last year, such as those found on social networks or mobile devices, a sign that cybercriminals are starting to focus their efforts on these increasingly popular platforms.
vulnerabilities in 2011 from the year before.” The 2012 report also reveals that most Internet users take the basic steps to protect themselves and their personal information - such as deleting suspicious emails and being careful with their personal details online. However, this year’s report also indicates that many online adults are unaware as to how some of the most common forms of cybercrime have evolved over the years and thus have a difficult time recognising how malware, such as viruses, act on their computer. And other core precautions are being ignored: 40% don’t use complex passwords or change their passwords frequently and more than a third do not check for the padlock symbol in the browser before entering sensitive personal information, such as banking details, online. m
“Cybercriminals are changing their tactics to target fast growing mobile platforms and social networks where consumers are less aware of security risks,” says Marian Merritt, Norton Internet Safety advocate. “This mirrors what we saw in this year’s Symantec Internet Security Threat Report which reported nearly twice the mobile

Dehyration is one of the major causes of a hangover. Start supplementing with essential electrolytes such as magnesium and potassium. For every drink you consume, accompany it with a glass of water and never drink on an empty stomach. Before the party, take a dose of Hangova or Liver Tonic to protect and lessen the stress to your organs.
Alcohol is one of the most toxic substances for your body. When consumed in excess over extended periods of time it can lead to liver disease, brain damage, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. But binge drinking can be as lethal, overloading your liver to a point that it is unable to process toxins adequately, leading to cell damage, premature ageing, weight gain, fluid retention, cellulite and a repressed immune system.
