In Memory Denis Bion, who devoted his career to the stationery field and was a well-known figure in the Zimbabwean trade, sadly passed away on 9 January 2012. Bion had been ill for some time following a number of strokes and his ongoing battle with diabetes. shop-sa magazine was one of Denis’s favourite publications and he always read it from cover-to-cover as a source of inspiration, and to keep him abreast of stationery developments in southern Africa. Denis was awarded the shop-sa Lifetime Achievement award in 2009. What a wonderful way to remember him by! It is hard to replace such a man in any industry.

Company and Banking Fraud Centurion Office National has been approached by a company calling themselves Exilite 230 cc (a misspelling of the name Excilite). According to the CK2 forms, the member of Exilite 230 is a Mr Kamegelo Phogole, however the contact person was a Mr Karabo Mkhabela, email address mkhabelo.karabo@gmail.com, with an email signature giving the address of 309 B Rose Bank Mews, 173 Oxford Road, Rosebank, JHB. On acceptance of the Centurion Office National quote valued at R24 938.32 the fraudsters said they would transfer the amount into the company’s bank account. Sales staff informed the ‘client’ that the order would only be released once payment reflected in the account. Three days later, still no payment had reflected. When Mr Mkhabela was phoned, he promptly sent an EFT from a Nedbank account and was once again informed that the order would only be released once the payment reflected in the account. Mr Mkhabela became infuriated and threatened to reverse the payment, which is impossible with a genuine EFT. A short time later he called to say he was cancelling the order as he had obtained the items at Waltons.

On visiting the physical address provided for delivery of goods, 416 Luderitz Street (also misspelt as “ludritz), Clarement, Pretoria, Centurion Office National staff discovered it to be a residential house up for auction and vacant for some time.

Fraudulent Change of Banking Details Windhoek Stationers received a faxed letter fraudulently claiming to be Freedom Stationers, sent with the announcement of a change of banking details. New banking details were

provided as Nedbank, Account: 1028601285, Branch code: 198765 and signed by Felot Yakop, Financial Director of Freedom Stationers. Please note that Freedom Stationers have not changed their banking details and all announcements thereof are to be considered fraudulent.

Number Disparity Pops Print Stationers recently received an enquiry supposedly from the Pretoria Department of Health with reference no. AA 040481 for a total of 1 500 HP Ink Cartridges. The order dated the 19th was requested as urgent with the tender to close the next day. Pops Print Stationers believe the order to be fraudulent as the telephone number 012 753 7457 did not match the numbers in the building.

Scammers get Away With It Paddington Stationers have unfortunately been the victim of a scam. An order for R11 000 worth of stationery (mainly boxes of copy paper and counter books) was placed with a written agreement to pay a 20% cash deposit and the full balance after two weeks. Acknowledging the risk, owner Mike Potgieter decided to go ahead with the order as they needed the business.

A second order was placed before the two weeks were up, but luckily Paddingtons had decided to delay the second delivery until they had received full payment for the first order. Needless to say, the second payment was never made, and the fraudsters are ignoring all efforts to contact them (including physically visiting the delivery address).

Paddingtons have taken the matter up with the SA Police force. to This month’s theme for the new My Office magazine is around paper, and it reminded me about the declarations made when I first started my career about the supposed moving into the age of the paperless office.

T

he information age came with the promise of not destroying trees for paper, and of virtual offices with no filing cabinets. Even better, going paperless would save companies money, increase efficiency, boost productivity, reduce risk from fire, and make information sharing easier.

I liked the “save the environment” part, but I wasn’t sure about all the rest of the promises. It struck me then, thirty years ago, that the main flaw of the argument was quite simple: all of those advocating the idea forgot that we are ultimately dealing with an illogical and irrational entity – the human being. I knew that I certainly wouldn’t be able to let go of the physical evidence needed to “prove” things. Having something on paper, even something as simple as a diary or address book, somehow made things a bit more real, a bit more tangible. Of course, the first time I lost all my data in a hard-drive crash, it confirmed for me that paper was not going to disappear quickly.

In fact, it struck me as rather ironic that large IT companies (I think IBM was the first) boasted of a paperless society, yet were the first to print letters, brochures and manuals, and they were insistent in asking you to sign – yes, you guessed

it – a paper contract. Some continue to do this today through the ‘cloud’ and yes, Amazon sells more ebooks than real books, but only because they are cheaper and more quickly available.

You try passing through any national border without a paper passport, and I’ll show you my paperless office.

Plenty of others got it wrong when they espoused their theories but forgot that we are human beings. Karl Marx and his disciples described the utopia of communism where everyone would share everything and we’d all be nice to each other. The reality? Eighty years of misery wrought on billions of people who didn’t think that it was such a great idea. They forgot that human beings are not equal, and that there would be unintended consequences to this ideal world that they described. Of course, the same is true of many politicians today.

Another myth which came out at about the same time as the paperless office was that employees just loved working in open-plan offices. Okay, Mr. MD, I wanted to say to them, why don’t you let me spend my working days in your private office while you occupy my cubicle? I eventually had to resign and start

my own business to make that wish come true.

Then what about the myth that if you make shareholders happy, both employees and customers will be happy too? Absolute bollocks! The very opposite is true today: if you look after people on your team, they will take care of your customers, and your customers will in turn reward the shareholders.

These rebellious reflections got me thinking about other businesses, and asking an important question: Are there companies and industries that forgot that first it was about people, and all their crazy idiosyncrasies that make us, after all, human beings? The answer is a resounding “YES!”, and it goes for people both as employees and people as customers.

For example, airlines think that we will all be perfectly happy being squashed for hours into tiny spaces for the benefit of conveniently getting from point A to point B at speed. No, we are not. CEOs think that we prefer to deal with demotivated, demoralised and poorly trained employees in a call centre in order to save

some money. Funny thing is that bank fees, medical aid fees, mobile ‘phone rates, and other products in a mass economy context are more expensive proportionately than they have ever been. Big global chains in the food industry, fashion industry, and even in the toy industry, think that everyone around the world wants to have the same bland, boring, and indistinguishable stuff.

My final example is “the brand promise.” Companies think that if they come up with a catchy slogan co-designed with their ad agency, that customers will believe it all.

That has been true in the past, even up to a few years ago, but the world has changed dramatically since then.

Now customers say “Yeah, whatever.”

We have learned that smoking kills you, fast foods make you fat, your underpants don’t make you cool – even when the label shows above your normal pants line - and whatever promise your bank makes is just a big exaggerated lie.

How does the average person make decisions about their technology purchases? The options, variety and depth of choice is so vast that it leaves even me confused, and I have been around the IT world for some time.

I

n today’s world, our choices seem endless. Each product comes in sometimes more than a dozen variations covering size, colour, speed, weight, resolution, warranty, guarantee, support, cost per minute, with USB 2, USB 3, SATA, or gigabit Ethernet - and the list goes on.

Do we really need all of these options? My feeling is that a buyer often goes into buying mode before they are fully on top of what it is that they need, as opposed to what they want. There is a distinction. What you need is something that has a couple of criteria. It covers form, function, price and a little bit of future proofing. What you want is generally more aligned with an ego purchase and skirts on the edge of wasting money.

So how do you decide on what you need? By asking a whole bunch of questions. For example, do I really need an iPad for my staff or can I make do with a couple of Samsung Galaxy Tabs? Do we need the built-in 3G connectivity option on all of our laptops or can we get a WiFi unit for a better price? Do you really need a multifunction office printer that can make you coffee, or tea if you prefer, or can you do with an inkjet instead? Does a Blackberry really make that much difference in terms of productivity? Should I spend the extra cash on being an early adopter on cloud or add a couple of additional hard disk drives to a local area machine?

The questions that work every single time are grouped in my world as the 5 W’s and an H: Who, What, Where, Why, When and How. Ask yourself these questions regarding each and every purchase you are going to make. You can even ask these questions of the things that confuse you about IT like “Do I need someone to create a Facebook page for me or can I learn to do it on my own?”

Most of the decisions that you need to make are not tough decisions. They probably feel or seem like it but once you do a little Googling on the subject at hand you will find that the internet is a tremendous resource for getting a grip on the fear of choice.

Granted that doing a little research could also leave you with a slight twitch indicating that you are suffering from Google-InducedOverload, but you will need to find the balance.

Being informed about what your “need” is means that you will waste less time during both your search for, and final decision on, the correct product or solution.

The other aspect is that fear of making an incorrect decision often drives the decision making to a greater extent than just using common sense.

The old axiom of “nobody ever got fired for buying IBM” comes from a trick used by IBM in the 1970s that involved sowing fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) about competitors’ products. In this way, the decision to buy IBM always seemed like a good one. So don’t assume that your service provider always knows best, sometimes they do and sometimes they are just trying to make their quotas. m Vol 96 - Issue 08

oing a marketing plan helps you to get to know your customers, their future needs and expectations. By identifying marketing opportunities you outline how to penetrate, capture and maintain your position in your identified market. If structured correctly it will increase your products and company’s competitiveness. The marketing plan seeks to formalise and increase your awareness of the market, competitors and business goals.

What’s the difference between marketing and selling? Selling brings in ‘today’s orders’ and is only one aspect of the marketing process. Marketing involves finding out what your customer wants and matching your business and its products to supplying those requirements – it lands ‘tomorrow’s orders’.

Your marketing plan is made up of two main areas: 1) the External and Internal Review followed by 2) assumptions drawn from this review, called the Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunity and Threat Analysis.

The External Review: This, as the term implies, looks at the things that are separate from your business (or you have no control over) but have a bearing on it. If one was doing a marketing plan for a farm, the weather would feature very strongly in this marketing plan.

For almost any plan the bulk of the following questions would have to be answered to the best of your knowledge.

• A clear and unambiguous description of the market you want to enter/develop.

• The total market size in units/volume and value. If you were looking at opening an outlet in a shopping mall, in addition to your own research, you would utilise the knowledge of the mall management to get a grip on the surrounding information that would influence your chances of success.

• Market leaders and their estimated share of the market. What makes this leader different?

Any significant market segments – age, race, usage and application, and estimate the sizes of these differentiated segments.

In today’s competitive marketplace, it pays to plan your business objectives and implement a strategy towards achieving those goals.

• Who are the main suppliers to you and your competitors?

• What are the changing lifestyles and market trends (who sets them?) What new technology or alternative cost saving products could affect your business? A point in case here is the internet café. Fifteen years ago it was a great market to get into. But now with the proliferation of “connectivity” it is no longer a growing market segment.

The Internal Review: This section concentrates on the things and actions that you have direct control over. The questions asked here almost always relate to the 4 P’s, which are: The Product: quality, features, technology, design, brand strength, packaging and range.

The Place: How is it distributed? To whom? Where does it go to? How does it get there and is the distribution area well covered?

How it is Promoted: Advertising, materials, trade shows, networking, personal selling, PR, service etc.

And Price: Is it price competitive? Do you price promote it? Do you offer credit facilities etc.?

Having completed the assumptions on the internal and external audits of your business, certain strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats in relation to your opposition will have become apparent. Develop strategies that will protect your company from danger but allow you to take advantage of the opposition’s weaknesses. These assumptions must now be analysed, prioritised and converted into strategy, using the pointers below.

Frames: display, enhance, protect The Mona Lisa might not have been quite so iconic if the artist had chosen to frame her in a polka dot PVC frame. frame, along with its mount, protects and complements any artwork.

While traditionally made from wood, todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s choices include plastic, gilding, mount blocking, laminating, glass, Perspex, silver, bronze or aluminium to provide either a modern office look or a more ornate style suited to the paintingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s period.

A protective covering glass, treated in an anti-reflective coating or UV finish, will safeguard the art from direct sunlight or harsh indoor lighting. Protective glass is used for watercolours and paper artworks but is rarely found over oil paintings. What is important, however, is that the glass is raised off the surface of the art via cardboard matting or shadowboxing (where two or more mouldings are stacked). If this is not done, any condensation inside the glass, having no room to evaporate, will absorb directly into the art, later producing discolouring, mildew or mould. The only exception is when paper artwork is fitted between two pieces of glass that are clamped together, allowing no moisture in, and creating a clear frame that that adds a spacious and modern feel. A cheaper alternative to glass protection is to laminate the piece.

The back of the frame will usually feature backing paper or dust covers to prevent dust and insects entering the lining, and firm cord and hanging hooks to allow the picture to either hang vertically or horizontally.

Most frames are usually square or rectangular, although circular and oval frames can create an artistic effect and work well for mirrors, photographs or sepia style images. Another creative choice is a box frame that allows for a light fitting either behind the piece for back illumination or in the front of a deep frame just below the lip.

The size and design of a frame can offer certain effects, for example framing a small art piece in an oversized frame, or the use of complementary yet different coloured mouldings layered upon each other. Creating a personalised frame of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own can add additional character to an art piece, using carved wood, trimmings, free-hand designs, stencils or decoupage. Even children can get involved in the art of framing, creating a frame from card and decorating it with different coloured pasta, seeds, dried flowers, leaves or shells.

Photo cubes, where there is room for more than one image within the frame, can include themes of family, a holiday or hobby. In addition, one can purchase a digital frame where images scroll and change at intervals. m

Legislation governs the regulation of food packaging in the industry; however, often the consumer is not aware of the variety of food packaging benefits to be found in the office and our homes. Today there are many types of food packaging choices an individual can make, be it glass versus plastic, plastic trays over polystyrene, paper bags, netting, cans, boxes, cartons or flexible packaging.

Whatever the choice, we can all agree that foods with proper storage and packaging keep longer, warmer, cooler and taste better, whether on a shelf, in a cupboard or inside a refrigerator.

Most food containers are made of plastic as they are airtight, waterproof, leak proof and grease-resistant, and come in every imaginable shape and size; and then there is foil, plastic wrap, wax paper and resealable plastic bags.

For school and home the convenience of insulated lunch boxes keep foods either warm or cool. If you pop out for fast food you are likely to be served your takeaway in a box, carton, paper wrapping or polystyrene. According to the Polystyrene Packaging Council of South Africa, polystyrene is found to be more sanitary than reusable service ware that needs washing and drying.

o longer do we eat as hunters and gatherers did, where our food is consumed mere minutes after picking or catching it.

Instead, the food in our lunchboxes, dinner tables and canteens goes through a meticulous process of preparation, packaging, labelling, transportation and storage until it is finally ready to be ‘picked’ and prepared for our consumption.

In the process, considerations of protection from shock, vibration, temperature, oxygen and time need to be taken as well as means of transportation, be it fresh produce, powders, granular material or liquids. Packaging that adheres to regulation, as well as innovative packaging materials that aid freshness, ease of use for the consumer as well as added marketing value, all come into play. Then there is the need for safety, be it tamper-proof, convenient for distribution and handling, stacking, display, portion control, opening and reclosing, as well as the downstream use of bar codes and price labels.

No CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) are used in the manufacturing of expanded polystyrene and it can be recycled into several applications. However, consumers can rest assured that there is a keen interest in enviro-friendly packaging and biodegradable products in South Africa, such as those produced

by Sappi’s Enviropak. There is also a demand for businesses such as EcoPack and GreenHome, which provide environmentally friendly packaging solutions made from renewable plant based materials such as sugar cane waste fibre, wood cellulose, corn starch and recycled unbleached paper.

Another innovation to market is Mpact’s manufacture of PET plastic wine bottles, where the benefits of plastic packaging are highlighted. PET wine bottled are virtually unbreakable, light weight to transport, can be used in outdoor venues and the wine tastes exactly the same when poured into a wine glass. make light work Our hands are the hardest working limbs on our body, look after them and you will maintain a life of health and independence.

O

ur hands tell so much about us – they show our age, our attention to detail, our level of self-esteem. They play an essential role in communication, whether shaking a client’s hand, using sign language with the deaf, creating an everyday miracle of activity at our desks, or with a single stroke to express our love for another.

Take good care of your hands as they tend to age faster than your face since there is very little fat, collagen and elastin fibers in the skin of your hand, producing wrinkles faster. With long-term exposure to the sun melanin production is triggered, causing liver spots.

The most unique type of skin is found on the palm side of your hand and fingers, as it produces no hair, and has its own inimitable set of fingerprints. The skin is tough and durable, yet sensitive, and is anchored to the bones through an intermediate layer of fascia. This keeps the skin of the palm from sliding around like a rubber glove when we use our hands to grip and twist. In some people, this layer of fascia can shrink and thicken, leading to Dupuytren’s disease.

Recent years has seen an increase in Tunnel Carpal Syndrome which has been linked, although not confirmed, to computer use, and almost 90 per cent of women and 80 per cent of men in the age group 75-79 years have x-ray evidence of osteoarthritis in their hands. Daily stretches and exercises will keep your hands supple.

Take care Dry, cracked, flaky hands and Eczema can develop from contact with water, chemicals, detergents and cold weather, and it is best to apply hand lotion every time you wash them. Use mild pH soap (pH of 7) when washing your hands.

Apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 every morning. If you have eczema, wear cotton gloves underneath rubber gloves when doing heavy work. The cotton will soak up sweat from your hands.

Take a minute each day to focus on your nails and cuticles and you will become less reliant on costly manicures. Apply a gentle nail-specific oil to condition dry, jagged cuticles and nourish and strengthen your nails. Gently push back cuticles with a washcloth while you are in the shower or after you have applied oil to avoid the need to trim the skin.

Get into the habit of treating your hands like jewels NOT tools.

Letter openers, scissors, staple removers and bottle openers all help us avoid hand damage.

Urdu home remedy: Soak your hands for five minutes in a bowl of either sunflower or olive oil to soften your hands. These oils contain vitamin E which promotes the elasticity and resilience of the skin. Olive oil is also a good source of valuable omega fatty acids.

If your hands are very dry and rough, take a teaspoon full of sugar, wet the hands and rub the sugar in. You could also soak them in lemon juice, then rinse, dry and apply a good cream overnight. A rich cream such as marigold ointment or grape seed oil works well. m Vol 96 - Issue 08

here a defendant has entered an appearance to defend a claim, one has approximately 20 working days after the service of the intention to defend to enter the plea. In essence, the plea sets out the details of the defendant’s claim and why it is disputing the plaintiff’s claim.

LAUREN ORRITT, Owner of LEGAL & DEBT OUTSOURCE SOLUTIONS has been involved in the debt recovery business for 20 years. She consults for suppliers, manufacturers and wholesalers within the industry assisting in reducing their bad debts while attempting to avoid litigation and court involvement.

Further to my last article, this month looks at defended claims and the trial procedure.

Once the plea has been served on the plaintiff and filed in court, the parties to the action have to wait 10 working days before pleadings are closed. They can then apply for a trial date for their matter to be heard in court. (One must always bear in mind that this article is a brief synopsis of civil procedure. It can become very involved with various additional motions and notices that can possibly be filed at this juncture, but these are more the exception than the rule.)

The 10 working day period enables the plaintiff to reply to any issues raised in the plea which need, by law, to be replied to. Alternatively, the issues that do not have to be replied to in a replication/reply by the plaintiff can await the presenting of evidence at trial.

It is important at this stage of defended claims that trial experts and attorneys who are experienced with these matters be intricately involved; experts will be able to ascertain whether it will be possible to settle any disputes prior to trial, or whether such issues in contention will only be able to be resolved in front of a magistrate or a judge (depending on which court proceedings have been instituted).

Whilst the courts play a vital role in protecting parties’ interests the parties instituting and defending any actions, that is – the plaintiff and the defendant – must be aware of the cost implications of proceeding to trial.

Your attorney will attend to the necessary procedural aspects for trial and the leading of necessary evidence in support of his client’s claim. Once the matter gets to trial the judge/magistrate will weigh up the arguments of both parties and will make a decision based on all the evidence presented. Once judgement is passed at the conclusion of a trial (and should it be in favour of the plaintiff’s claim) the next step is that of execution of the judgement. m Our next article will discuss execution procedures.

It is time for the South African stationery, home and office products sector to take a stand against myths and misinformation, and to broaden our knowledge of the truth and scientifically proven facts.

“W

hile we cannot dispute the convenience and immediacy of having annual reports on our company websites and our latest bank statement emailed to us, we have to ensure that the power of electronic communication is not ‘green-washed’,” says Jane Molony, executive director of the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA).

In the case of your bank statement being sent straight to your inbox, it is simply about reducing cost (to the service provider) and improving convenience to you as the user. It is certainly not about ‘going green’.

The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change published

by Sir Nicholas Stern, head of the Government Economic Service in the United Kingdom, in 2006 explains it simply. His 700 page document tackled the effects of climate change and global warming on the world economy. He used the same document to demonstrate how paper and print have a better environmental footprint than electronic communication.

Stern notes that sending 50kb via e-mail causes the same emission as posting a 10g item, with all its fossil fuel consumption in mail delivery etc. (Makes you think before you press send for the 5MB sales presentation!)

The big difference is that reading an item on a computer emits greenhouse gases at the rate of 3.8g of CO2 per minute. Reading a piece of paper results in no additional emissions.

E-waste is the fastest growing component in the municipal stream In an article in Sappi’s eQ Journal (Issue 0004), Hans Wegner, Chief Sustainability Officer of the National Geographic Society says, “I get frustrated with people who say ‘magazines are the problem,’ when an annual subscription to National Geographic is equal to using a gallon of gas [equivalent to 3.5 litres of petrol] in your car.”

Wegner does take some comfort in knowing that the carbon footprint of the [National Geographic] magazine is something he can quantify, unlike the impact of the online version. Wegner isn’t so sure that electronic is the better medium for the environment, despite the majority of the general public believing as such.

“We don’t know the environmental impact of saving a document on a server for ten years or more,” Wegner says.

“And we have no idea of the impact of extracting finite resources to make electronic devices that cannot easily be recycled safely and practically.”

As part of the recent global industry response to Toshiba’s now-abandoned National No-Print Day, the National Association for Printing Leadership in the United States stated: “The real waste problem is the rapidly escalating number of discarded computers and other electronic components, which are not biodegradable and will sit in landfills for generations, taking up increasing amounts of space and ultimately leaching lead, mercury, and other toxic metals, hazardous chemicals and plastic residue into the soil.

Greenpeace has identified electronic waste as the fastest growing component of the municipal waste steam”. www.shop-sa.co.za

Trees and paper are a renewable resource Compare the manufacture of electronic devices to support communication, which rely on energy from non-renewable fossil fuels and components made from nonrenewable precious metals, with the natural and scientific wonder of the tree: It is 100% renewable and it requisitions carbon during its growth cycle through photosynthesis.

Furthermore, sustainably managed plantations mitigate climate change, provide a reliable and FSC-certified timber supply into the value chain and ensure that our land, water resources, fauna and flora remain protected.

South Africa has the highest level of international certification of its plantations in the world. Over 80% of South African plantations are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The use of renewable biomass-based energy has also enabled the South African paper manufacturing industry to avoid the use of 1.3 million tonnes of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas annually and therefore, the associated carbon emissions.

Once the paper reaches the consumer, it is vital that it is recycled, thereby extending the period of carbon lock-up in paper and keeping carbon out of the atmosphere for longer.

Become a paper pusher Arm yourself with the facts and enlighten colleagues, family and friends (download the official paper fact sheet from www. thepaperstory.co.za) and ask them to remove footers from their emails such as ‘Consider the environment before you print this’.

While PAMSA certainly does not advocate wasteful printing, we ask that paper and printing, and the environment, be treated with respect: • Buy locally manufactured paper that is FSC-certified. This way you can be assured that the paper is produced from sustainably managed plantations.

• Reuse your paper – print draft documents on the reverse side.

• Recycle your paper, keeping it dry and away from other waste.

Lastly, be responsible with your electronic waste. Do your research and find reputable electronic waste recycling companies that you know will handle your old computers and printers with the environment in mind. m my office magazine

The global, not-for-profit organisation FSC works tirelessly to ensure the responsible management of forests throughout the world. FSC members include some of the world’s leading environmental NGOs including WWF (World Wildlife Fund), Friends of the Earth, Green Peace and the Woodland Trust, and the FSC enables companies to demonstrate by way of independent certification that the wood and paper products they are purchasing derive from well managed sources, and are not produced from illegally logged timber. Every piece of wood is tracked from the forest to the store and every link between the forest and the consumer is certified in order to make it clearly identifiable what wood is FSC certified and what is not. The FSC label guarantees that any trees that have been harvested are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally. Rare forest animals and plants are protected and their habitats preserved. Land that is deemed sacred by indigenous people is exempt from felling.

Owners of forests employ local labour in running the forests and are required to maintain specific conditions pertaining to working environments. FSC certification

adorns not just paper and wood for furniture, but also floors, decking, kitchen utensils, printed matter and charcoal. Over 80% of South Africa’s forests are FSC certified. All of Mondi’s forests are FSC certified.

Growing responsibly managed forests contributes significantly to the reduction of CO2 levels in the atmosphere, moderating – and even counteracting – climate change.

In South Africa, Mondi’s forests currently absorb more CO2 than its operations put out, but it is nevertheless passionately focused on increasing its ratio of renewable energy use over traditionally relied upon fossil fuels. It calculates and lists the carbon footprints of its products according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which is published by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute. Mondi’s utilisation of renewable energy sources increased from 47% in 2004 to 57% in 2011, globally.

At present, 62% of the energy consumed

by Mondi South Africa is generated from renewable energy sources.

In a characteristically dry country that is prone to water shortages, Mondi has conducted a water impact assessment of all of its forest operations, concluding that water risks need to be taken into account in all operations. Direct action includes the delineation of the wetlands, as part of the Mondi Wetlands Programme. Furthermore, its Merebank paper mill does not utilise potable (drinking) water during paper production.

As a further external verification, Mondi is included on the FTSE4Good and JSE’s Socially Responsible Investment indices.

Responsible corporates demonstrate effectively that the pulp and paper industry is inherently sustainable, and that this has as much to do with the company’s long term growth as it does the environment.

Consumers should do their part for the planet and choose products manufactured by companies that display superior sustainability profiles.

Deon Joubert: The Merpak Man Merpak managing director Deon Joubert joined the company in 1987 and has seen – and effected - many changes in the industry over his 25 year journey.

“Due dates are far shorter now and a 24 hour turnaround is often entirely doable.” Merpak is currently working on rapid and super rapid responses for nonstocked product to change the perception that a company of this size cannot meet tight deadlines. “Running a business in South Africa is a complex and timeconsuming challenge,” Joubert asserts, “especially with SMEs that must comply with the same levels of reporting, code and legislative requirements that large enterprises do, but without the same resources.”

The company’s membership of shopsa has opened doors to the retail sector: “Historically, Merpak was not a serious player in the retail stationery sector, Vol 96 - Issue 08

industry icon concentrating instead on bespoke or customised products supplied directly to the end user,” says Joubert. “With a growing demand for some of our products in retail, we began supplying this segment with some success. Our route to this market is through our distributor network.

They offer a far wider range of products to the market and are shop-sa members, sell to shop-sa members and market their products through shop-sa, so it was prudent for us to become a part of the organisation.”

Sustainability and ‘green’ As the world looks to initiatives that reduce carbon footprints and create sustainable methodologies and jobs, Joubert says that “green” and “sustainability are “both concepts that get us very excited”.

“There’s much research surfacing globally that suggests paper may be the only truly sustainable communication medium. For years we’ve heard that cutting down trees to make paper is bad for the environment. Current empirical evidence suggests just the opposite.”

With FSC grade papers, Joubert says we can now be sure of the origins of papers and that they come from managed and sustainable sources. “These managed plantations are far better at sequesting carbon dioxide and manufacturing oxygen than mature forests. Without tree farming

around the globe, our world would be in far worse shape that it is.”

Paper is recyclable by up to seven times and at the end of its life is completely compostable. “Manufacturing power is now partially generated from biomass, reducing reliance on electricity generated from fossil fuels. Merpak is working with the UK’s Two Sides, which dispels the myths around paper and educates on the practicality of using paper responsibly.

Together with Printing SA, we hope to set up a local branch of Two Sides here soon.”

Into the future So, how does the massive online communications move affect Merpak?

Joubert remains optimistic: “It would be naive to suggest that we will convert the tweeters, sms’ers, and e-mailers to letter writing. Our world is just too connected and we want instant responses to our communications. But if one wants personal and sincere, it’s hard to beat a message on paper.”

Recent European research reveals that over 70% of 20-30 year old survey respondents confirm paper-based communication is preferred, and less than 30% want only digital communication.

“Direct mail marketing is a segment showing huge growth potential. In a world of cluttered on-line information, marketers in Europe and the USA are finding

resurgence in the humble marketing letter. A staggering 97% of these are opened, more than the online messages that invade our personal space daily.”

As a significant player in the local market – with an investment in a business in the paper sector and a keenness to explore other opportunities – Joubert says the country has many challenges. “But the sun shines, we have wonderful people here and we should all try and make just a little difference each day.” m

PUSHING THE ENVELOPE: About Merpak’s go-to Man Born in Nelspruit 1958 and raised in Cape Town, Joubert still believes Wynberg Boys High is the best school in the world.

He furthered his education at UCT and Henley Management College (UK) and his interests include enjoying sports like rugby and golf; running (a bit) and a love of cooking – “which I do most of the time at home”. If he wasn’t MD of Merpak, Joubert would love to farm in the Karoo.

Married to Lynn “for a long time”, he is proud Dad to Robyn, a 23 year old BSc Conservation Ecology student at Stellenbosch; Jane, who is 22 and in her fourth year of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch; and laatlammetjie Andrew, a 13 year old scholar at St Andrews in Grahamstown.

His personal motto? “It should be ‘I have got to have more fun’ . . . I just haven’t found that recipe yet.”

The advice he’d give to youngsters entering the workplace? “We train many youngsters at Merpak, both in formal apprenticeships and also through twoyear office cadet programs. My advice to them is always the same: “Learn, explore, ask, question, have fun and do a bit of work but when you do, do it properly!”

The Containerboard and liner paper combinations converted into boxes have to withstand the pressure of being palletised and stacked for both road and sea transport. Various humidity and box compression strength tests ensure products are engineered for convenient storage units that can be stored flat, but bulk up while in use.

The more recent requirement to have “fit-for-purpose packaging” that is shelf ready has given Sappi the opportunity to further improve products printability and convertibility. What is your home-town?

Athlone, Cape Town Tell us about your childhood and some favourite memories of growing up?

Growing up in Margate, I loved going to the beach. At the time, my favourite person was my gran. She coached softball and I was the team mascot with my own mini uniform. I think I was outgoing even as a child, and remember insisting on getting up and dancing on stage at three years of age to a one man band at a local restaurant.

We also travelled overseas to a number of destinations and a highlight for me was Disney World at the age of nine.

At what stage of life do you find yourself at now?

In my mid 20s – I feel this is the best time of my life. I feel old enough to know what I want and young enough to have the energy to go for it.

What is your life’s motto or personal brand?

Live the life you love and love the life you live!

Use three words to describe yourself Enthusiastic, passionate and loyal.

Briefly describe the highlights of your working career.

I started working at the age of 15 as a waitress and my hospitality experience grew from that. I was fortunate enough to work in the UK for two years and on my return to South Africa I worked in the online industry and it was here that I discovered my interest in marketing. I joined the Henkel Consumer Division’s marketing team in 2009, and my recent appointment to Stationery/Pritt Product Manager has to top my list.

SSC Alive Online Silveray Statmark Company (SSC) has launched its new website and its online strategy has got off to an excellent start.

Within the first two months, it had 2 845 visits to the website, which resulted in 65 subscribers to SSC’s external newsletter and 354 fans on its Facebook page, which also offers a maze game where consumers can win an Ipad 3. With an SEO campaign launched, the response from online customers has been very positive. Trends in the industry show that the fiercely competitive online market has forced stationery companies to add online channels to their marketing strategy and SSC is hoping its online marketing will continue to add value to the SSC customer, whilst continuing to expand other social media possibilities.

Comrades Comrades!

The Comrades Marathon is a cherished national sporting event and attracts thousands of runners, spectators and television viewers every year. Two well-known personalities took part this year. For Ursula Langenfeld of Makro, it was her first Comrades, running for Edenvale Road Warriors Running Club with a finishing time of 10h54m39s. The more experienced Mark Penhall of CTP Donau saw his 17th Comrades and is a proud owner of 11 Bronze medals. He runs for the Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club and finished with a time of 11h57m25s. His running log book, since its first entry in 1986, testifies to a total of 11 500 kilometers. The 2012 event saw 18 000 runners enter on the website, with runners supported by 4 850 volunteers, 800 marshals and almost 700 000 supporters en route. Perhaps most telling for the contestants was the usage of two tons of potatoes, 1.1 million water sachets and 750 tubes of deep heat.

3M Marketing Focus To emphasise the importance of international marketing, 3M launched its marketing initiative Marketing Excellence, headed by Jan Shimanski, in 2010. “The vision we immediately established was that 3M International would be recognised as a benchmark for cutting-edge marketing, propelling the organisation to unprecedented growth,” said Shimanski, vice president of Global Marketing Excellence and head of 3M’s Center of Marketing Expertise.

“It’s now time to take that vision global.”

Following a diagnostic to look at where 3M stood in marketing competency internationally, Shimanski found that only 35-40 percent of a marketer’s time wasn’t being spent on marketing activities. Shimanski and her team felt that diminishing non-marketing activities was critical to create an environment in which marketers were focused on more strategic and longer-term, goal-oriented challenges. “We conducted deep-dive pilots in Benelux, Turkey and in Germany,” she said. “We’re freeing up marketers’ time so they can focus on issues that will lead to that overall growth for 3M. “We are involved in one of the biggest cultural transformations that 3M has seen since Lean Six Sigma,” Shimanski said. “We are going to be progressing not just with a process, but in changing the culture and the way people think about marketing. JSM PLASTIC’s Celebrates 30th Birthday In 1982, Johannes Maree and Ernest Wilken sat talking about their futures. The company Ernest worked for in Johannesburg was in a process of closing down. Johannes, owner of a farm in Vredefort District, was concerned about the drought. While discussing several options, Ernest’s wife Ina, a teacher, suggested they think about manufacturing pre-made, slip-on book covers in plastic since book covering was every mother’s worst nightmare, requiring brown paper, plastic roll, scissors and sticky tape.

Under a pall of dust, Ernest found a small PVC machine in Alberton and Johannes bought it immediately for R5 000. Initially, no one knew how to operate it, but after much loss and heaps of waste, the first 8 000 book covers were ready. However, the market was sceptical as the covers cost more than brown paper. Samples were left at schools and the following year JSM Plastics sold 80 000 units. More machines were needed but it was the bank’s turn to be sceptical, with bankers in the rural areas more familiar with milk and mealies than plastic. However, nothing held this factory back and soon JSM became a major brand. Ernest, who managed the marketing aspects, passed away in 1997.

Johannes, still on his farm, took over the marketing. Despite their challenges, JSM has succeeded and the demand for quality PVC book covers sees a production of more than 40 000 covers per day, along with other industrial and corporate products. Distributing as far as Zambia, JSM manufactured all the 37 000 files for the Zambian census in just two weeks, and since 2000 JSM has been one of the top ten customers of Bloch and Levitan, the biggest PVC supplier in the country, and recently received applause from the Bantex Group. In the words of Robert Slavin: “I have been in the industry for 46 years and have the largest stationery manufacturing plant. I have visited factories worldwide over the years and was very intrigued by JSM Plastics. I find Mr Maree a man dedicated to the purpose of selling his products and he obviously has a customer base which big companies like us seldom meet, despite all our major capital investment, robotics and automation.”

Xerox Announces Business Boost in a Box Winner Live event technology company Stage Audio Works has won the Xerox Business Boost in a Box competition.
