T
he highly successful shop-sa/Pantum/Kenton sports day held recently in Johannesburg – featured on page 6 – saw the coming together of industry greats and successful company heads and their invited guests. Although a social event made up of bowling teams and practised golf swings, it was also a day of networking and of ratifying established business relationships.
The responsibility of leading a brand towards success in the marketplace lies with MDs, CEOs and marketing managers – and they will take the blame for its failure. It was remarkable to see so many personalities stay the course as pillars of the office products industry here in South Africa. As the saying goes, a company is only as good as its people. Author Pete Blackshaw says that in today’s digital world, satisfied customers tell three friends – and angry customers tell 3 000. On page 10, Aki Kalliatakis discusses how the aging customer should not be discounted: while we must meet the needs of the younger generation, we should not do so at risk of alienating a loyal base of long-term followers. Our lead feature on data storage solutions reminds resellers of the need for a multi-focused approach to assisting customers

While the digital wave has allowed for streamlined processes and massive amounts of data generation, it also means a secure and responsible approach is required when it comes to sharing and storing that information. Read more on page 18. The tablets and notebooks feature on page 22 addresses the need for mobility tools in a fast-paced and dynamic business world. The use of companion tools is increasing, and we are seeing how tablets and notebooks are reshaping and increasing our ability to work, connect and share information. Finally, resellers would do well to consider improving their ability to sell office paper beyond mere price, see page 25. With sustainability a key word in today’s environments, corporate brands are seeking to improve their business values and principles by moving towards sustainability and finding means by which to take part in a responsible future custodianship. Instead of competing on price - a hard competitive advantage to sustain in itself - suppliers would be better served by offering knowledge on the product’s sustainable sourcing and manufacturing practises. financial bytes Bidvest shows growth in annual results
We won’t go that way - Capitec
Bidvest’s annual results, released on 7 September, have shown healthy growth - thanks largely to its recent acquisitions, especially food-service companies. CEO Brian Joffe appears to be icing a cake to sell in London. He has been quoted as saying that Bidvest was considering listing its food-service business in London, partly as it was “quite complicated to continue to fund significant acquisitions abroad out of the South African balance sheet”. This seems a curious rationale for a group with R5,6billion in cash on its balance sheet - more than R8,8-billion including overdraft facility. While organic growth within the group may have delivered less impressive returns in a tough global trading environment, the recent acquisitions of Mvelaserve and Home of Living Brands helped push Bidvest’s turnover up 19,7% to R183,6-billion and trading profit up 16,6% to R8,9-billion. Joffe described the results as “satisfactory”; however, this belies an impressive statistic: Bidvest now boasts a market cap of R93,2-billion. Source: Sunday Times: Business Times
With the demise of African Bank as South Africa’s largest unsecured lender, the heir to that title says it doesn’t think it faces a similar fate. This is despite the fact that ratings agency Moody’s downgraded Capitec by two notches in August. The downgrade reflected its “heightened concerns [of] the risk inherent in Capitec’s consumer lending focus”, as consumers battle to repay loans. But Gerrie Fourie, Capitec’s new CEO, says his bank is more stable than its failed rival. “A lot of African Bank’s problems are not because of what happened in the last five to eight months, but it goes back to three to six years,” says Fourie. Stellenbosch-based Capitec Bank, South Africa’s youngest bank, accounts for about 20% of the unsecured lending market - half of African Bank’s 40%. Ironically, Capitec is now part of the consortium of six banks seeking to bail out African Bank by underwriting a R10-billion capital-raising exercise.

Companies urged to claim dotCity domains South African Internet users will soon be able to sign up for and use new city-orientated domain names, including .capetown, .durban and .johannesburg. Business owners or trademark holders looking to secure their company names or trademarks with the new domain suffixes have until 4 November to do so, after which the new domains will be available to the public and anyone with the inclination (and the R275 registration fee) will be able to register any available name. Wayne Diamond, MD of Domains.co.za (South Africa’s only operational ICANN-accredited registrar – the other is Internet Solutions), says the imminent availability of these three domain names presents businesses across the spectrum with a “golden opportunity to capitalise on the local and international renown of these cities”. The application fee for regular domain names (like “xcompany.joburg”) is R1 500, while the application fee for premium domain names is R6 500. Diamond says he thinks it is “short-sighted of any big company not to lock down these domains now”.

SA economy grows at 0,6% in second quarter South Africa’s economy grew at 0,6% in the second quarter, following a -0.6% contraction in gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first quarter, according to Statistics South Africa. The modest growth means the country has avoided entering a technical recession. The Reserve Bank, in its June Monetary Policy Review, says that while the domestic economy had suffered several adverse supply shocks, particularly from strike action and electricity shortages, leading to negative first quarter growth, it was unlikely that the country would fall into a recession.

Teams either played a four-ball game of golf or entered a bowls team on the greens at the Killarney Country Club. The fair Johannesburg weather favoured the players who laughed, networked, bowled and swung their way to victory under blue and sunny skies. Kenton sponsorship was visible on the bowls green, while Kolok, Pentel, My Office, Channelwise and IT-Online made a brand presence on the fairways. Welcome refreshments and fine entertainment from Vanessa Palm were enjoyed at the clubhouse after a long day, while the scores were tallied. A rousing prize-giving evening then proceeded in the elegantly decorated Crystal Room. Esteemed MCs Allan Thompson and the inimitable Graeme Joffe kept guests entertained. Businesses should never tell their customers that they are “too old”
Carving Out Growth in Mature Markets
I
n theory, at the age of 57, I am a Baby Boomer - that generation of people born between 1946 and 1960. Baby Boomers lived safe from war and serious hardship, grew up mostly in families, and enjoyed economic prosperity. I am supposed to be someone who loves equality and freedom, is environmentally concerned, peace-loving and optimistic, but also find it easy to challenge authority and protest what is wrong (think Vietnam).
But when I look at who I am now, I think I match the next group, the so-called Generation X, those whose formative years were between 1973 and 2000. Think Curt Cobain; apathy bordering on anarchy, bold reactionism and antiestablishmentarianism. I sometimes May/June 2014 find myself cynical and mistrusting. Instead of freedom and autonomy, I feel forced to feel guilt, shame, doubt and inferiority for being who I am. My achievements, accomplishments and competencies are dismissed as too particular of an age, a race or a religion. Yet media and advertising tell me to earn and buy more,

more, more. Quite frankly, I am often exhausted; I feel isolated and disengaged, and I fantasise about taking my family to a deserted island or hidden monastery. In my life I also have people and organisations that make me feel good and who give me a sense of hope. Sadly, there are extremely few businesses in this list. What brought this particular pessimism on? I recently called a famous company that makes and sells biscuits, and gently told them that I had noticed over the years that the chocolate and lemon filling that goes in the middle was not only far “thinner” than it was a few years ago, but it also seemed quite tasteless. After going into deep denial, the young woman on the other end of the customer care line implied my taste buds had changed because I am old. I was outraged and demanded she then put me through to an older manager. At which point she became aggressive with me, and I decided to walk away – albeit fuming. I repeated my experience at a seminar a few days later. When I finished, another “old” delegate shared her story. She was at the perfume counter enquiring about the fading essence of a perfume that
costs R1 200 for a small bottle. The cheerless young girl behind the counter told her it was “all in her imagination” because she was getting old and her nose wasn’t as sensitive as before. This made me question how often things like this happen, and I realised it is distressingly common. When it comes to business, isn’t it possible - nay, necessary - that your staff reflect the demographics of your customers? Isn’t customer care and helpfulness centred on empathy? Isn’t it about walking in the customer’s shoes? We are aware of the controversy regarding having call centres in other countries – most notably in India. While this strategy may save the company some money, the reality is that those people know absolutely nothing about their customers, except for a few lines summarising recent transactions on a screen. There is an answer to this dilemma, but it involves training – lots and lots of expensive and intensive training in empathy, listening, building relationships and, most of all, in having true insight into who your customers are, what they believe in and what a day in their lives looks like. Are you willing to pay the price?

External experts can chair disciplinary hearings There is a serious misconception that employers may not get external experts to chair disciplinary hearings
N
ot only is it perfectly fair and legal for an external expert to be asked to chair a hearing, it is desirable too.
This is because: • An external person will be less susceptible to influence from the parties than would an internal chairperson; • An expert in labour law will have the experience and skill to run the hearing according to the very complex requirements of the laws of evidence; and • Such an expert would be able to arrive at a fair decision without breaching the myriad of complex principles that the CCMA expects to be applied. However, a great many employers have had their dismissal decisions overturned at the CCMA - not because the dismissal was considered inappropriate, but because the chairperson, an internal employee or manager, was unskilled in the chairing of hearings. Schedule 8 of the Labour Relations Act (LRA) requires that the employee be allowed the opportunity to state a case in response to the allegations. The courts have consistently interpreted the latter requirement to mean that the accused employee must be given the right to an

unbiased chairperson; to testify; to bring documents; to call witnesses; and to cross examine evidence brought against them. The question then is how can an employer: • Provide for these legal rights without setting up a proper enquiry with a fully skilled chairperson? • Prove that all of these rights have been afforded to the employee without taking proper minutes? Thus, in order to be able to ensure that the employer complies with the employee’s rights, and in order to be able to prove such compliance, the employer has no choice but to use a properly skilled chairperson and to set up a formal hearing - the record of which becomes part of the evidence at the CCMA. It is at the CCMA where the employer will be required to prove that it complied with legal procedure when dismissing the employee. In the case of Schoon Mahumani versus MEC, Department of Finance (2003 Contemporary Labour Law Vol 13 No.4 2003) the High Court of Appeal decided that the chairperson of a disciplinary enquiry cannot rely on the disciplinary code alone, but must also take into account the provisions of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act 3 of 2003. Also, the court decided that the employer’s refusal to allow the accused the right to legal representation at an internal disciplinary hearing was unconstitutional. This startling decision
strongly indicates that the courts see internal disciplinary hearings as very formal processes. Furthermore, where an employee is suspected of poor performance it is not enough to have an informal discussion with the employee about the problem and then to fire them the next week. The LRA sets down specific steps to be followed before a dismissal for poor performance can even be considered. For example, the employee must have received sufficient evaluation, guidance, counselling and training. Even then, the employee’s poor performance must have continued after they received the said evaluation and guidance. Moreover, in order to justify dismissal there needs to be an investigation into the alleged poor performance and proof that there is no other way of remedying the performance problem. Thus, whether the employee is a probationer, an experienced worker or a senior executive, it is far safer to formalise all procedures related to misconduct and poor performance. The officials who carry out the corrective procedure need to be highly skilled in legal procedure in order to make sure that each and every legal right of the employee is strictly adhered to. Therefore managers must either be thoroughly trained in disciplinary process or the employer must hire a reputable labour law expert to chair its hearings.

H
ow often do you find that people are vague with their comments, requests and instructions? I encounter it often enough for it to have a real impact on my life. Clarity goes a long way to ensuring that life has less clutter and that there are fewer things to be concerned about.
If people are clear about what they want from you, and you are clear about what you want from them, then the outcome will more often than not be within your expectations - and theirs. This clarity can come in the form of the 5Ws and an H: who, what, where, why,

when and how. If you cover this then you should both be on more or less the same page. I say more or less because we are after all human, and misunderstanding can creep into even the clearest instruction through misinterpretations of language or understanding of terms - or just simply not listening. One of the aspects that I enjoy about clarity is that it significantly reduces the potential for conflict. Communication should be close to crystal clear, leaving little room for argument over expectations. It also has the added benefit of reducing clutter. Clutter in this context comes in the form of attachment, fears and worries. Attachment because we are expecting a particular outcome or result - and if there is little clarity then we are likely to be disappointed because there is no shared expectation of outcome. Fear because clarity allows us to get on with doing what needs to be done in the
knowledge that we are doing the thing as briefed. Worry because we’ve given or received a task, and other than the other human involved we should get an excellent outcome, all things being equal. Isn’t it great to have one less thing to worry about? I have become better at being clear in my daily life, but it is still a chore. Sometimes it involves asking a “stupid” question to get clarity. It can involve being repetitive if someone is not being clear. It can also be taxing for others if they are not in the habit of being precise about their requests. Just imagine if you deal with someone who never tells you when they want it, but whenever you deliver, it’s too late anyway. Clarity is just a small part of making our communication remembered, understood, clear and actionable. So, let me be clear about this: just ask.

herever people are working, they need a clean, safe and healthy working environment - and janitorial and sanitation (jan/san) products sit right at the core of this requirement. With traditional supply and distribution channels changing, many wholesalers and resellers are adapting to maximise the opportunities it presents, aware of the fact that virtually every business or office has a need for these types of products - and are increasingly looking to single-source all their office requirements from one supplier.
Workplace health and safety are key drivers for this sector, and the desire to comply with regulations and keep a workforce fit and well by combating the spread of bacteria and viruses means investment in jan/san is seen as money well spent. According to United Stationers, “unscheduled absenteeism and lost productivity bring considerable cost and workers’ compensation claims are a growing concern for owners and managers. We see lots of potential in

those products that support this workplace wellness,” the wholesalers adds. “Spring cleaning and the arrival of the cold and ‘flu season, or news stories around health issues, can drive demand for new products and solutions.” VOW’s Nice sees merit in using social media to raise awareness of hygiene issues while Kimberly-Clark has launched the delightfully-named www.achoo. com to back its seasonal Prepare to Care campaign, to lessen the effects of cold and ‘flu in the workplace. Kleinmann in Germany has taken things even further. It’s developed a device that assesses the hygiene status of any surface by measuring the bacteria count and delivering a verdict on its contamination level in seconds. It uses the device in a number of demonstrations to show the effectiveness of its Dataflash cleaning products by measuring bacteria levels both before and after use on keyboards, mice, telephones and desks. Technology has also had an impact on the products themselves. Vectair Systems regards itself as being on the cutting-edge with its sub-micron fragrance technology, Piezo devices and antimicrobial chemistry in its product range. A lack of product expertise is hampering some as they break new ground. As ADVEO’s Abrahams explains: “Without doubt the biggest challenge
is around knowledge, experience and confidence about the products. For companies where jan/san has not previously been a core focus, it takes time to adapt and understand what they need to do to deliver to their full potential. Education and training are critical to developing this category and we all have an important role to play here.” Novexco’s de Montigny adds: “Firstly, we had to get our sales force and the dealers on board and convince them of the need to add jan/san to our offering. Secondly, we had to raise awareness among our end customers regarding this new category to change their purchasing habits. The sales force was then trained to assess customers’ needs in jan/san products and educate them as to how Novexco could meet those needs.” Fellow US wholesaler United Stationers also has a heavy focus on training. As the jan/san group explains: “It takes time for resellers to develop confidence in their ability to sell jan/san products and some shy away from this category altogether. We’ve helped our resellers take on the low-hanging fruit in cleaning products and have a dedicated jan/san helpdesk to provide support when they face challenges. We’ve also established three-day intensive training ‘boot camps’ which complement our monthly Webinars and local ‘lunch & learns’.”

s our lives become increasingly mobile and our digital highways increase in speed, spread and complexity, there is a corresponding urgency for protection against the risk of theft and data loss.
Merely backing up data is no longer enough. Embracing a solution that meets today’s business risk means engaging with a managed process, where both businesses and their trusted providers are involved in guaranteeing the security, transfer, archiving and availability of the data and its total restoration should a crisis hit. It will also provide for reporting, controls and auditing for operational efficiency via both physical and virtual server environments. “Data protection is not just about backup today; it’s about a holistic

approach that tightly incorporates snapshot management, archive, reporting, deduplication, replication, search and access,” says Nick Wonfor, country manager of CommVault, the world’s fastest growing data management software company. “With data growing 44 times per annum, as well as the space and staff requirements to manage it, businesses are being forced to find more intelligent ways to manage this data growth. There is evidence of a trend towards a one solution data protection approach.” Resellers need to be integral in assisting clients to customise a solution appropriate for each level of the business environment, in order to ensure that the data is truly secure. While there are many data storage solutions available with simple storage and access, a true backup solution includes built-in backup times, version control, encryption and data management features. Data storage encompasses anything from an external hard drive to tape, solid state drives (SSD), disk to SD memory cards. The type of data and how it needs to be accessed will determine the type of
data storage needed. Hard drives can be used for operational data, while tape is used for archival and backup data. According to Jonathan Long, in his Seagate-based blog: “The need for an external drive shouldn’t be a hard sell, but its importance can be overlooked. It’s a bit like a microwave or refrigerator where you don’t think about them until something goes wrong and you’re in need of a new one.” Hard disk drives (HDDs) Similar to those installed inside a desktop or laptop computer, an external hard drive can be plugged into the computer or removed and stored away from the main computer. Both capacity and physical size need to be considered: 2,5-inch hard drives are portable, while 3,5-inch hard drives need a power source and are used at a desk. An external hard drive provides a good option for local backups of large amounts of data, and is the cheapest and most reliable storage option in terms of value for money per Gigabyte. These are, however, vulnerable to damage by dropping or electrical surges. Vol 98 - October 2014
data protection Solid state drives (SSD) Solid state drives look and function similar to traditional hard drives but internally they are different in that they have no moving parts or rotating platters. Relying on semiconductors and electronics for data storage, they offer a more reliable and robust portable option that uses less power with greater speeds. External SSDs are also a viable option for data backups, with capacities of up to 256Gb - albeit at a higher price than traditional hard drives.
Alternatively, two hard drives can be set up to double the read/write speed of a single hard drive. The drive is always connected and available to the network, making the NAS a good option for implementing automated scheduled backups. NAS is not a moveable option, and will need protection from vulnerabilities such as theft, flood or fire.
Optical drives CD and DVD drives are ideal tools for storing media such as music, movies or software for distribution. CDs and DVDs are a low cost option, and as such do not offer good storage options for backups due to their shorter lifespan, small storage space and slower read/write speeds.
LTO drives Tape backups are still the most common method for long-term archiving because it is cheaper than hard drives. Linear tapeopen (LTO) magnetic tape drives are both reliable and manageable as an off-site data storage option for SMEs. Data-dense, robust and cheap, LTO tape is also an ideal addition to small, rack-mounted servers. Automation provides compatible desktop backup for smaller workstations.
Network attached storage (NAS) NAS are simply one or more regular hard drives plugged into an array storage enclosure and connected to a network router or hub through an Ethernet port, along with ventilating fans to protect the hard drives from overheating. A good option for local network backups and small businesses, a NAS can hold very large amounts of data and can be set up with redundancy arrays (RAID), increasing its reliability and read/write performance. Depending on the type of RAID level used, the NAS will still function even if one hard drive in the RAID set fails.
USB flash drives Flash drives are similar to SSDs except they are much smaller in size and capacity. Robust, portable and with capacities of up to 64Gb, they are easily fitted to accessories to aid mobility, and are ideal for backing up a small amount of data for business on-the-go. They are often used by marketing departments for product branding and information distribution.
What is RAID? The acronym originally stood for “redundant array of inexpensive disks”, but this has recently changed to “redundant array of independent disks”. When hard drives were less spacious and more expensive, RAID was created to combine multiple, less-expensive drives into a single, higher-capacity and/or faster volume. On top of that, it was designed to facilitate redundancy, also

obility is no longer just a trend: it is the new reality for productivity. Today’s mobile computing environment is meeting the demand for work on-the-go, and it is shifting business away from four static walls and into the global spotlight.
The key to today’s mobility is immediate access to information, ensuring workers are always connected and in touch. Helping your customers choose a portable device to best suit their needs is not as daunting as it may seem.
Tablets Tablets are small, unibody devices. Lightweight and flexible, they can be held in one hand while being manipulated with the other. Operating system When it comes to tablets, the three main operating systems on offer are Android, Windows and iOS. The choice of operating

system depends largely on the user’s personal preference, as it will determine not only interoperability between devices but also the design of the user interface. Devices running iOS are generally considered to be more stable as they have a tightly integrated user experience, while Android offers greater flexibility and
customisation. Windows tablets offer a seamless transition from desktop computing environments to mobile ones because they run the same Windows-based programs many people use on their PCs. The number of apps available for each platform may also sway your customers’ decision. The Apple App Store has more Vol 98 - October 2014
how to sell exclusive apps, while the Google Play Store has a greater variety of each app. The Windows Phone Store has very few apps in comparison. Screen size Another key selling point of tablets is screen size. Typically, tablets range in size from seven to 12 inches, although some manufacturers may offer in-between sizes. As the software and apps on a tablet are independent of screen size, the choice hinges solely on the way in which the device will be used, and where. Resolution is an important aspect to consider when lining up options for customers. Generally, larger tablets will have higher resolutions: 720p is common in entry level devices while 1 536p is available on high-end devices. Tablet screens are made of a type of glass called Gorilla glass. This glass is scratch-resistant, and often comes with an oleophobic coating. This coating repels oily marks left by fingerprints. Battery life Battery life is key when it comes to the usefulness and portability of a tablet. The degree and intensity of use will determine how long a single charge will last. Tablet batteries are typically between 4 000mAh and 10 000mAh. These batteries will generally give users between seven and 11 hours of Web browsing time, and between eight and 13 hours of media playback time. Screen brightness, as well as the number of connectivity options activated, will also play a role in battery drain. Storage and connections Tablets come with predetermined internal storage. Different makes offer a range of
sizes, from 16Gb to 128Gb. Some tablets have a microSD slot, offering expandable storage for consumers who need additional space. Tablets generally do not come with USB ports, and therefore plugging in an external hard drive is not an option. It is important to ensure your customer chooses a tablet with sufficient storage to suit their needs.

Accessories Many users find it challenging to type for any length of time on a touchscreen, and so one of the most popular accessories for tablets are keyboard stands. Tablets can be used with a stylus for more precise input. These reduce errors as they have a pointed tip for pin-point accuracy.
Protecting a tablet from nicks and scratches is made easy with the wide variety of cases on offer. These fit snugly around the sides of the tablet and have a flap that opens and closes to reveal the screen. Many cases also double as stands, so that users can watch videos or read without having to hold the tablet themselves. This is ideal for long periods in one position, such as when on an aeroplane. Another way for your customers to protect their screens is to use a screen protector. This is a thin, sticky film of transparent plastic which provides a
Productivity Arguably the most important selling point of a tablet is the productivity it allows users. Aside from operating system, battery life, screen size, storage and connections, connectivity is key for the modern mobile worker. Most tablets come standard with WiFi and Bluetooth. Some are GSM-enabled as well, which means that they have a slot for a SIM card. Weight is an important factor when considering productivity, as users have to be able to hold the device comfortably. Tablets range in weight from 300g (7inch) to 700g (12-inch). Tablets have a wide variety of uses, ranging from drawing and sketching to taking notes, playing games, watching movies and reading.

Notebooks So-called because they are approximately the size of a notebook and fit into a briefcase, these devices are a lightweight alternative to a PC and are designed specifically for the mobile environment. Operating system The two main operating systems available on notebooks are Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s OS X. Your customer’s choice of operating system will depend entirely on what they are used to, and what they intend to do with the device. If the notebook is a mobile continuation of the office PC, the easy compatibility of Microsoft Office documents will be a draw card. OS X devices are generally preferred by people who already own other Apple devices, and are often used by those in the creative field due to the software available from the Apple App Store. Screen size Notebook screens come in a variety of sizes ranging from 13,3 inches to 17,3 inches. The larger size offers an advantage for professionals like graphic designers and software developers, who often prefer to work on bigger screens. There is also a link between screen size and screen resolution. Typical notebook resolutions range from 768p to 2 160p, with larger screens generally having a greater resolution. Battery life The choice of notebook battery depends on your customer’s intended use for the device. Manufacturers offer 3-cell or 6-cell battery options; the more cells a battery has, the longer battery life will be. A 3-cell battery will last from three to seven hours for general use, while a 6-cell battery will last between seven and 14 hours. There is a trade-off, however, as 6-cell batteries often add extra weight and can even increase the physical size of the device.

Portability The weight of a notebook greatly influences its portability. Weight is influenced by both screen size and battery size. Larger batteries can the increase size and weight of the device; however, as systems are better optimised and battery technology improves, manufacturers can ensure a good battery life while keeping its size to a minimum. Notebooks generally range in weight from 1,5kg to 3,5kg.
and it does not have a handle. Many users prefer not to use a track pad when sitting at a desk, and a wireless mouse is a convenient tool to have. Another range of accessories that can be offered to customers are those improving ergonomics. A notebook stand lifts the device off a flat surface at an angle, which relieves both neck and back strain. Additional wrist supports can minimise pain and mitigate carpal tunnel syndrome.
Storage and connections Notebook capacity is an important selling point. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are smaller, lighter and quicker than traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). They use less power and therefore promote battery life. The disadvantage of SSDs is that they are more expensive and have limited capacity (usually 128Gb). Notebooks with traditional hard drives offer more capacity – up to 1Tb – and are less expensive. They are, however, slower and use more power, which has a negative impact on battery life. Storage can be expanded on some notebooks by making use of the second hard drive bay. If this is not a feasible option, the next best thing is external storage. Notebooks come with multiple USB 3.0 ports which can be used to attached portable hard drives, flash drives or external optical drives (DVD/CD writers). Many notebooks still come with integrated optical drives, and higher end devices may include Blu-ray players.
Productivity and power Designed with a screen and a keyboard, there is no disputing the fact that a notebook is useful for high input text-based tasks and design or development work. The portability of a notebook no longer means sacrificing on processing power. A wide range of Intel and AMD processors are offered in Windows-based notebooks. It’s not uncommon to find notebooks with 8Gb or more of RAM. RAM can be expanded by replacing the module with a higher capacity one, or by adding additional units. As with tablets, the connectivity offered by a notebook is key. Notebooks come standard with WiFi and Bluetooth, and some even have a slot for a SIM card under the battery. Other productivity tools include an HDMI port – either a full-sized or a mini one – which makes output to a TV simple. An SD card slot is a feature on many notebooks, allowing users to easily access data stored on devices that use SD cards, such a cameras and video cameras.
Accessories The most popular accessory for a notebook is a bag in which to carry it. These bags generally have a centrally located, padded section, often with Velcro straps to secure the notebook in place. The bags can be made of leather or nylon, and include other pockets for the charger, pens, files or business cards. Sleeves are another way to protect notebooks. They resemble a pocket and are usually made of neoprene. There is only space for the notebook and charger,

ostling for a piece of the market pie can get messy. Sustaining market position is tough. Companies looking to bring in sustained profits often have to resort to either cost cutting or raising prices.
Office paper has multiple impacts on the environment throughout its lifecycle, from its raw material state through production, transport, distribution, use and recycling. Resellers must ensure that companies are on board with sustainable practices. Internal crime checks Fingerprinting is an essential tool in today’s HR vetting. Don’t wait until it is too late
W
ith commercial crime up by over 45% in the last nine years, and HR fraud at 42% in South Africa compared to the global average of 15%, it is more important than ever to use a reliable criminal vetting process for recruiting and human resources management.
“South Africa has seen a radical change in the way criminal checks have been conducted over the last three years,” says Greg Brown, director: Risk Management & Compliance Solutions at LexisNexis South Africa, a leading background screening and due diligence solutions business. “This began in 2011 with the introduction of the Afiswitch Criminal Illicit Activity Check, which requires the physical capture of fingerprints on an electronic scanner for verification. “The criminal check business has since evolved to include additional status and criminal detail provided by 69 reports of SAPS, helping recruitment agencies and HR managers to make sound decisions when hiring candidates,” says Brown. The Afiswitch Check replaced the Criminal Name Clearance Check, which was a simple online search using name, surname and ID number to provide a negative or positive criminal status. The change in systems created a logistical nightmare for
recruitment agents and departments as the candidate needed to be physically present for the capture of the criminal checks. The device and training were additional costs, and many recruitment agencies stopped offering criminal checks as a service. However, today professionals recognise the accuracy and intelligence behind the Afiswitch system, which is now firmly established as an essential tool in the vetting process. Purchasing a scanner is not the only method available to business owners interested in protecting their companies. Many background screeners have established networks of agencies providing once-off criminal checks at a reasonable charge. These networks even extend to outlying areas which were previously inaccessible to smaller recruitment firms. The change in criminal check systems has also brought with it business opportunities for entrepreneurs. A number of smaller companies offer a mobile criminal check service where the biometric officer travels to the candidate or business to capture criminal checks for a fee. There is still the old faithful 91A form, although it now has some enhancements. An original 91A form can be submitted to a background screener and the fingerprints uploaded to the AFIS database for vetting, with a result in less than two weeks – a major improvement over the six to eight weeks of the past. hether a sketch by Da Vinci; a painting by Picasso; an architectural drawing of a new high-rise; or the digital manipulation of an image for the pages of Vogue magazine, the creative environment knows no bounds.
From prehistoric rock art to the first pieces of parchment paper, the way we learn and create centres around putting ideas into practice. While the first step is inspiration, creativity then becomes concrete in the form of sketching, modelling or designing. What remains key in the process are the basic tools for creative expression. Like every other aspect of our fast-paced world, the traditional and digital are merging. Rather than threatening to override one another, a symbiotic relationship has formed between the two.
The first crayon gripped in a child’s chubby hands may later become a mechanical pencil or a tablet stylus. Technology offers new tools for expression, giving users the ability to continue to develop and push the boundaries of art while creating a hybrid of traditional and digital media. Access to the variety of tools available today provides a wide range of choice for creative expression.
Digital tools Modern tools for expression include: • Hardware – this includes devices such as smartphones, tablets, notebooks and PCs. The advantage of using an electronic device as a tool is that artworks can now be planned before committing them to canvas. Artists who have moved to the digital form find more ways to experiment without the cost of materials or the space required for traditional art. • Software - there are a number of highly regarded pieces of software that can be used in different creative environments. Programs such as Adobe Photoshop and CorelDRAW are used by artists and graphic designers to sketch, paint, draw and design. Software like Blender and Maya is used by artists to design 3D models and animations. Draftsmen and architects can create detailed plans and designs without a large drawing board using programs such as AutoCAD. Required changes are much easier to make in digital form.

arts&craft Traditional tools Traditional art supplies encompass a large range of familiar items, including: • Pens and pencils – these are arguably the most familiar artists’ tools. Pencils are usually made from graphite, which have an alphanumerical grading. The H stands for hardness, while the B stands for blackness. The number refers to hardness. For example, an artist might prefer a 2B pencil, while an architect will use a 2H pencil. Charcoal pencils are often used by artists for shading. Coloured pencils are made from a blend of clay and colour pigment. Pens can have oil or gel-based inks, and come in almost every colour imaginable. • Pastels – these can be chalk-based, made from compressed powder; or oil-based, consisting of pigment mixed with a nondrying oil and wax. They come in a variety of colours. • Paints – the standard types of paints used by artists are watercolours, which consist of finely ground pigments that are water soluble; acrylics, which are made from pigment suspended in a polymer binder; and oil paints, which are made from ground pigments mixed with oil. • Brushes – made of stiff synthetic bristles or finer, more pliable hog hair, brushes come in a dizzying array of sizes, thickness and shapes, including round brushes, flat brushes, mop brushes, sword brushes and fan brushes. • Papers and canvases – the type of paper or canvas used is usually determined by the medium in which the artist works. Watercolour paper is roughly textured and thick, while paper used for calligraphy is smooth and light-weight. Canvas can be made from cotton, linen or other synthetic materials, and can be primed to take any type of paint or ink.

Astute resellers are those who are able to identify with a client’s industry and mission and deliver on a wide basket of day-to-day offerings of supplies and services that will save the client time, administration and unnecessary costs. By building relationships and uncovering hidden needs, the reseller offering can be upgraded and spread to include the delivery of products and management services required by building manager facilitators. This would mean first understanding the expectations of the individual facilities manager, and could include: • New product introductions and aligned services management. • Installation of purchased equipment and upkeep of loan equipment,
along with the associated supplies in order to keep it operating (as long as the brand continues to be ordered via the supplier). • Technical training for staff if required. • Regularly assigned delivery schedules (free of charge) and inspection of on-site equipment. • A managed inventory of all products and purchases to define varieties and quantities, and as a means for alternative product offering and cost savings. If they do not adhere to Health & Safety legislation and the requirements specific to their client’s operations, they can introduce risk into the organisation, impacting its people, assets and reputation. industry news Pitney Bowes introduces digital signature technology Pitney Bowes South Africa, a leading provider of customer communication solutions, in partnership with ARX Cosign, the market leader in digital signature technology, has launched a powerful, integrated solution which streamlines and digitises document signing processes. Called “CoSign Click”, it facilitates how companies “on-board” new customers. Leon van der Merwe, business development manager at Pitney Bowes South Africa, say, “Co-Sign Click is a digital signature solution which enables a company’s customers to sign on-line documents and forms electronically without them requiring a digital signature or any hardware signing device. “Until now, signing electronically with a digital signature was only available to licensed subscribers of digital signature applications. This new technology is great news for companies requiring customers to provide a once-off signature on a document or form.” Already the technology is converting the customer on-boarding process from a time-consuming paper-based system taking five to seven days down to 40 minutes. Pitney Bowes is the first company to introduce CoSign Click to South Africa, and is excited to introduce the numerous benefits of digital signature technology to local businesses. “In South African law there are certain statutes that require a
signature before a document can be considered valid. If this signature is to be applied electronically, the Electronic Communications and Transaction (ECT) Act of 2002 refers to an ‘Advanced’ Electronic Signature (AeS) and is the only type of electronic signature that is recognised as legally acceptable. “The partnership with ARX offers our customers a legally compliant solution for digitally signing documents which can then be seamlessly integrated with their electronic document management system,” says Van der Merwe. “There are three areas in which the technology ensures compliance, which we refer to as the three ‘I’s’: intent (to sign), identity (of the signer) and integrity (of the document). After a person electronically signs a document the content of the document is protected. If changes are made to the signed document, the signature will no longer be valid.”

Curved TVs offer greater energy efficiency

he advanced features offered by curved televisions, such as innovative designs, ultra-high definition (UHD) resolution, 3D compatibility, high contrast and less reflection, auto depth enhancer and uniform viewing distance, is seen to be driving market growth.
This is according to Transparency Market Research’s Curved Televisions Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2013 – 2019 report.
In addition, the light-emitting diode (LED) and organic LED (OLED) technology used in curved televisions offers high energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and durability. It requires less operational cost and is seeing commercial organisations opting for curved televisions. Considered the future of consumer electronics displays, OLED technology uses an organic chemical compound as a key material to emit light in response to an electric current. Curved screens also offer highercontrast images than liquid crystal display, and are so thin that future mobile devices will be able to “fold like paper”. At present, the market for curved televisions is limited to upmarket
shopping malls, commercial trade centres and consumers with high disposable income. To encourage more market penetration, manufacturing costs are being reduced by decreasing the standard size of these displays. In South Africa, LG leads the transition from the flat screen to the gently curved screen - reportedly the most optimal form for any display, providing equal distance from all parts of the screen to the eyes, with the degree of curvature being based on careful calculations. The resulting screen allows no distortion of objects as it is shaped after the natural form of human sight and vision, taking the viewer right into the centre of the onscreen action.
