Melvin Jones Fellow Recognized

Recently, at a club meeting, Lion Brent Porter was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the East Cocalico Lions Club and District Governor Carl Spellman, for his commitment to serving the world community.

Named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones, this fellowship is the highest form of recognition given by the foundation and honors commitment to humanitarian service. Lion Brent has been “Serving” since 2004 and has “Served” as President of the club twice.

Each year the president of the East Cocalico Lions Club is given $1,500.00 toward a “President Project” of his choice. Last year, during his second term as President, Lion Brent gave his President Project to LCIF. He received a finely crafted plaque, a letter from Past Lions International President Douglas X. Alexander and a lapel pin acknowledging his dedication to the foundation’s humanitarian goals. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, he became a part

of the growing network of individuals who are committed to improving the quality of life for people locally and in communities around the world.

Shown in the photo is District 14-D District Governor Carl, presenting Lion Brent with his Melvin Jones Fellowship plaque.

The members of the East Cocalico Lions, who have been “Lighting the Way” in their community for more than 75 years, congratulate Lion Brent for becoming the club’s newest Melvin Jones Fellow and thank him for giving unselfishly of his time and efforts to “Serve” not only his local community, but also the world.

Martin

Ephrata High School

Desiree Martin

Senior

Getting into college may seem like an ordinary task, but to Desiree Martin, it is a major accomplishment.

Now accepted into seven colleges, Martin says, “Before applying, I was worried I wasn’t going to get accepted into some schools.” After this achievement, Martin admits she feels “very accomplished” because her “hard work has finally paid off.”

Daughter of Brian Martin Sr. and Cleante Zimmerman, Desiree Martin participates in many different school activities such as German National Honors Society, where she is president, Student Council, National Honors Society, Science National Honors, Society Link Crew, and the Mounts Buddy Program. With all of these activities, it is not surprising that Martin’s favorite part of school is the social aspect. She says, “I enjoy interacting with my peers and working on group projects.”

As standing president of German National Honors Society, Martin is an avid member of Ephrata’s German language programs. She says that AP German is her favorite class for many different reasons. She mentions that she feels like she is always learning: “Every day, I learn something new in that class. I enjoy the cultural comparison between the U.S. and Germany.” Another reason Martin likes her German class is because she is always laughing and having fun.

Outside of her German studies, Martin enjoys weightlifting, collecting vinyl, traveling and occasionally drawing.

After high school, Martin plans on attending university to major in biochemistry. She is considering many colleges such as University of Pittsburgh, Drexel University, George Washington University, and University of Connecticut.

Even with all the successful role models in her career path, Martin admires her mom the most. Martin says, “She’s a hardworking and generous woman that has taught me a lot. She’s one of the most positive role models I have in my life, and I appreciate the sacrifices she’s made for me and my brothers.”

Madison Bills

7th Grade

Madison Bills is a fun, talkative, bubbly, responsible, and quirky 7th grader at Lititz Area Mennonite School. Madison likes LAMS because it feels like a safe environment because the people and teachers are kind and caring. Her favorite subject in school is social studies because the teacher is fun and because when you start learning a topic, you work with it until you know it well, and then you move on.

At school, Madison participates in basketball, the worship team, and track. She won the MVP award in basketball and got 2nd place in the 400-meter dash at a track meet. She plays soccer for the PMG soccer league.

Madison’s hobbies are basketball, singing, and soccer. The best accomplishment in her life so far is getting 1st place in the Hershey Cup with her soccer team. She is planning to go to Warwick for high school.

After high school, Madison wants to get a job doing something with hair styling. Her role models are her parents and her Aunt Roxanne. Madison attends Grace Church, Lititz where she helps with childcare for the little kids.

Her favorite verse is Psalm 46:5: “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”

for a section where large quantities of potatoes were formerly grown.

Es Katze Miehl - the location of an early grist mill on the Allegheny Creek. It is no longer in operation, however, the name survives.

Es Drucke Wattshaus - an old hostelry in Fivepointville, Brecknock Township, Lancaster County. In the dialect, Am Druckene is still used to designate what is termed “Fivepointville” in English. (In the winter of 1985, this ancient building was converted into a restaurant.)

How Are Mom & Dad Doing?

Die Rot Kuh - An old name for a section in Brecknock Township in Lancaster County, where in the past there was a thriving hotel and a hamlet named “Red Run.” I had a sweetheart there in the long ago. (Bischli-Gnippli was born in that former hotel building on February 15, 1925.)

***

On May 27, 1982, our dear nonagenarian friend, Paul B. Horning of Bradenton, Florida, compiled and mailed to us this list of 26 dialect place names with which he is well acquainted. He wrote at that time: “All of these places are dear to my heart, and I can well remember that I met many people years ago, who were justly proud to say that they lived at or near these various places.”

This week our Deitscher Schtrohhut is lifted in salute to “Papa” Horning for recalling these ancient dialect place names and to all those who call these places home!

We have the impression that Dutch place names are more numerous in the eastern settlements than in the Midwest, possibly due to the fact that in the East the Dutch were among the earliest settlers. Be that as it may, every effort should be made to record and preserve ALL Dutch place names, whether eastern or western. Please share with us any Dutch place name you recall - even if it’s only one.

Watch and Pray

Author: Wenger

Scripture: Mark 14:38

“Keep watching and praying so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”

Our Lord is now in Gethsemane and certainly His most distressing and challenging time, preparing Himself for the cross. This is His hour of agony as the crucifixion is at hand. We see the Lord watching and praying, He commanded the disciples to do the same. His temptation would be

to turn from the cross as He prayed “take this cup from me; nevertheless not what I will, but what You will.” (Mark 14:36) Truly this is one great purpose of prayer; enablement and resolve to do the will of God no matter the cost

The emanate temptation the disciples were about to face was to deny their Lord. At this point, fear of the Jews would prove to be an overwhelming influence.

Peter just proclaimed that he would never deny the Lord but would die first.

This night would be the proving ground for Peter’s commitment; and he would deny the Lord three times. Here our Lord gives two commands that enable

victory for every kind of temptation; watch and pray. First we should watch. There are several associated concepts and commands in the Bible that are all very similar…be sober, be vigilant, be alert. These admonitions are prevalent in scripture, (1st Peter 5:8) explains why; “Be sober, be on the alert, your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” We have a dreadful enemy who will stop at nothing to destroy us and any good work God wants to do in and through our life. We need to realize that we are in a battle, even hand to hand combat at times, with the forces of evil.

The Bible says, “be not

conformed to the world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

(Romans 12:12) We need to be alert, and watch or slowly we will conform to the world and its views on life instead of God’s worldview. Slowly, little by little, we slip comfortably into the world and its philosophies if we are not vigilant and on the alert. This temptation may well be the most deadly of all because it can influence all of our life and we become as the church of Laodicea; lukewarm and good for nothing.

In Hebrews 2:1, we are instructed to, “Pay careful

attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” It is especially important that we watch, be aware of false doctrine so as to not be led astray. Ephesians 4:14 spells it out nicely, “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” What you believe should make a difference in how you live.

Not only are we to watch out for the many temptations that can overtake us, and the false doctrine that deceives, but we are also to watch for, and look unto Christ, and

His soon return. Matthew 24:42, 44 reads, “Watch therefore; for ye know not what hour your Lord does come. Therefore be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man comes.”

We are to watch that we do not fall into temptation and the sin that so easily entangles us. We are to watch so that we do not embrace false doctrine and thereby be deceived.

We are to watch and look unto Christ the author and finisher of our faith, and His soon return.

Next week, we will look into prayer and its relationship to the willing spirit and weak flesh.
