After many years in the making, Gehmans Mennonite School held a ground breaking ceremony for its new facility, which will house a new gym complete with a full size

basketball court, a kitchen, bathrooms, art room and music room. The new facility will be 85 feet by 125 feet and the project is slated to be finished in October of 2023. The community has

shown strong support for this much­needed upgrade which will offer greater opportunities for learning and healthy activity.

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Lucy J. Shimp, 93, of Ephrata (formerly of Denver). Lucy went to Heaven on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at The Gardens at Stevens.

She was born in Reinholds to the late Charles, Sr. and Katherine B. (Snyder) Weidman. She was the wife of the late John L. Shimp Jr., who passed away in 1995.

Audrey R. (Titlow) Priga

Audrey R. (Titlow) Priga, 89, formerly of Reading, resident of Providence Place, Lancaster, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023. Born in West Reading, she was a daughter of the late Howard B. and Edna (Endy) Titlow. Audrey was the wife of Edward J. Priga, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage until his passing in 2010.

Audrey graduated from Reading High School, class of 1952. After graduating high school, Audrey attended Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, graduating in 1955 as a Registered Nurse. During her time in Philadelphia getting her degree, she met Edward Priga and the two were married April 7, 1956. Audrey worked as the Assistant Director of Nursing for the former Community General Hospital in Reading until she retired in 1996. Audrey was an avid reader, enjoying all kinds of books such as novels, history books, and books on various current events. She also frequently put puzzles together on her iPad as a relaxing pastime. Audrey enjoyed traveling, particularly to the beach at Stone Harbor, and visiting her son Dan, in Pittsburgh. Her love and dedication to others will be forever remembered.

Audrey is survived by three children: Daniel (Sandra) Priga of Cranberry Township, Steven (Rebecca) Priga of Denver, & Amy (Jason) Blavatt of Reisterstown, MD; five grandchildren, Kate Priga of Pittsburgh, Benjamin (Katie) Priga, stationed in HI,

Sarah (Tad) Shirley of Lacona, NY, & Jared & Rachel Blavatt of Reisterstown, MD; four great-grandchildren, Judah Shirley, Charlotte Shirley, Hayden Priga, & Madelyn Priga; one brother, Charles R. (Patricia) Titlow of Shillington; six nieces, and one brother-in-law, James (Sue) Priga of Bethlehem.

A viewing was held on Thursday, May 18th with a funeral service at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, 34 N. Reamstown Rd., Reamstown (Stevens). Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Shillington, PA.

Annual Memorial Day Event

The Schoeneck Veterans Memorial Association (SVMA) will host its annual Memorial Day event on Monday, May 29. The day begins at 8:15 a.m. when parade participants begin lining up at the Schoeneck Fire Hall parking lot. Parade step off is at 9:00 a.m. sharp with parade participants following a route throughout Schoeneck streets, and ending at the Veterans Memorial (Schoeneck Park entrance on West Queen Street).

This year their program highlights two long­standing members of the SVMARobert Eberly and Clair Bard. Both men served in Vietnam, returned to the Schoeneck area, and continue to serve their community and SVMA as active members. Told in their own words, you will find their stories compelling and thought provoking. At the conclusion of the program, a free/free will luncheon will be served at the Schoeneck Fire Company pavilion (hot dogs, baked beans, water, etc.).

• Monetary prizes will be awarded to lvl parade participants in a variety of categories

Summer PA Dutch Classes Begin

Berks History Center (BHC) is excited to bring back its popular new PA Dutch Classes teaching participants the language and culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch. The Summer 2023 semester begins Tuesday, May 30, and will run for eight weeks.

BHC is offering two PA Dutch course levels with an in­person or online option. Online classes are held via Zoom and in­person classes take place at the BHC Historical Society Museum, 940 Centre Avenue, Reading.

Pennsylvania Dutch is an American language that

developed from the immigration of German speakers to colonial Pennsylvania. While speaking PA Dutch is not as widespread as it once was, the tradition is still upheld by both native and non­native speakers.

Enrolling in a PA Dutch class at the BHC offers a fun opportunity to celebrate and preserve this rich cultural heritage.

BHC began offering inperson beginner PA Dutch Classes in the fall of 2022.

During their Winter 2023 semester, BHC broadened its offerings to include online classes. Due to increasing demand, the organization has expanded its program yet again for the Summer 2023 semester to include both beginner and intermediate courses and introduce participants to two new class instructors.

Hygiene Kits To Support Community

Wreath Laying And Ceremony

The Vietnam Veterans of America and Associates Chapter 1008 of Lancaster, PA will hold a Memorial Day weekend wreath laying ceremony on Saturday, May 27 at 1:00 p.m., rain or shine, at Greenwood Cemetery (South Queen Street, Lancaster) at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial.

Recently, 1,000 hygiene kits filled with toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, hair combs, hand sanitizer, washcloths, and other hygiene products were distributed to support underserved individuals throughout the community.

The kits were distributed to three local nonprofit organizations ­ CrossNet Ministries, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Water Street Rescue Mission.

Annual Mohnton Memorial Day Parade

The 63rd annual Mohnton Area Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 29, starting at 9:00 a.m. from the VFW Post 9045 Home on West Wyomissing Avenue, Mohnton. The parade will feature the Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle

Corps, P.O.S of A Mohnton Camp 211, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, local auto clubs and businesses, Mohnton Borough representatives, area police and fire departments, etc.

The parade will proceed from the VFW Post Home to Walnut Street to North Church Street and end at the Mohnsville Cemetery where the memorial service will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Larry Graeff will be Master of Ceremonies. The Speaker is Randy Plumber,

Administrative OfficerIndiantown Gap National Cemetery. The Rev. Robert W. Shuey of Zion E.C. Church, Mohnton, will give the Invocation and Benediction.

Annual Reamstown Memorial Day Service

The annual Reamstown Memorial Day service will be held on Sunday, May 28 at 4:30 p.m. This solemn tradition occurs at the war memorial in the Reamstown Park, 11 East Church Street, Reamstown. This outdoor service pays homage to Americans who have sacrificed their

lives in defense of the nation. There will be music, laying of the memorial wreaths, taps and rifle salute and a distinguished speaker.

Please bring your family (especially children) and lawn chairs to this very important event. The VFW poppy queen will be collecting donations for the 101­year­old Buddy Poppy Program.

Honor the fallen with your attendance.

Renee Martin is a bright, happy, friendly, 14-year-old girl. She loves being around people and getting to know them better. She says, “I love just doing life together with friends.” Renee is a part of Gehmans Mennonite School’s Bible Quizzing team. After Renee graduates from Gehmans, she hopes to attend Terre Hill Mennonite High School. And then after she graduates high school, she hopes to get a job at Sight and Sound Theaters or something else to do with acting and singing. Renee loves to read, play piano, or listen to music in her spare time. Renee attends Green Terrace Mennonite Church with her family. Her dad is also the pastor there. When she asked what her greatest accomplishment is so far, she answered, “Becoming a Christian.” Renee’s favorite class is Jr. High chorus because she loves singing and because she gets to sing with different people. Some hobbies Renee enjoys are playing piano, songwriting, cooking, being outside, camping, and canoeing. Two people Renee really admires are her mom and David. She says, “I want to be just like my mom when I grow up because she loves Jesus and loves people and is really wise.” She also admires David “because he was a man after God’s own heart.” Renee’s favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 41:10. Renee is a great person and someone I am proud to call my friend.

Bellini Garden Spot

Enzo Bellini

Junior

Enzo Bellini, 16, is a junior at Garden Spot High School who thrives in his day to day pursuit of his passions. Bellini is involved in many extracurricular activities such as Marching, Concert, and Jazz bands. He plays the trumpet and is one of the section leaders for the GS band. He also sings in the school’s chorus.

Bellini also attends the Career and Technical Training program where he is enrolled in the transportation course. He hopes to be a certified auto mechanic in the future; he hopes to take on the task of restoring a classic car, preferably a 1967 Mustang.

He currently works at Yoders Country Market. Outside of school, Bellini is involved in Eagle Scout troop 543. He received the highest ranking as Eagle Scout and is the senior patrol leader. The group meets once a week and camps once a month. Bellini loves the outdoors and says, “Find me anywhere on the trails!” He loves biking, hiking, and quality time with his friends.

GRAND FINALE FIREWORKS SHOW: A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE FIREWORKS SHOW: The scheduled time for the show is 10 PM. Due to the size of the show, setup begins at 1 PM. Once setup has begun, the show cannot be canceled. As in years past, if there is a chance of evening thunderstorms, it may be decided to shoot the show earlier or later than 10 PM depending on the weather forecast. If the show needs to be canceled due to rain, it will be posted on the Adamstown Community Daysʼ website by 8 PM on Sunday the 28th. The rain date will be Memorial Day, May 29 at 9 PM.

Friendly Circle Meeting

The Friendly Circle held its May meeting on Tuesday, May 9, at Akron Community Church. Vice President Tom Williams welcomed everyone and conducted the meeting.

Ginny and Ken Brown greeted 69 members and one guest to the meeting.

The theme song “The More We Get Together” was sung followed by “The Pledge of Allegiance” and “God Bless America.” They sang “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Let There Be Peace on

Earth” with Gladys Horvath accompanying on the piano.

The devotional leader for May was Pastor Brad Haws from St. John’s United Church of Christ. Pastor Brad told them he loves trivia. He informed them of some trivia facts: there are more private owners of tigers in the United States than tigers in the wild, there are 30 times more trees on earth then stars in the Milky Way, it took until 2015 for London to have the same number of people as in 1939, there are three vacant houses for every homeless person in the United States. People waste a lot of what they know and don’t use what they do know. There

are 158 million employees in sweatshops in the world.

John the Baptist said to his followers “there goes the Lamb of God,” he must increase, I must decrease.

John the Baptist found the Messiah and stayed with Jesus. He let Jesus change their lives. What you know about God and Jesus, what has it done for you? When they know they follow just as Andrew and Peter did. Pastor Brad gave a blessing before their meal.

After the delicious meal, they were entertained by Karl Hausman, he began playing the piano at seven years old. In the 1960s he opened for Johnny Cash throughout Canada. He appeared with Dick Clark, Roy Clark, Diamond and Lou Rawls plus others. In the 1980s, he was the “Main St. Pianist in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. He played a variety of music (from polkas, rock and roll and patriot) for the group, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Lions Club April Student Of The Month

The Ephrata Lions Club recently honored Mia Cerullo as their April Student of the Month. Mia is in the 11th grade at Ephrata High School. She is a member of the Leos Club serving as Treasurer, Vice President of the Student Council and the Spanish NHS, member of the NHS and Future Teachers Club. Mia also played on the EHS basketball and tennis teams. She volunteers with the Leos Club in various activities, Mini Mounts Girls Basketball Camp, Spring Musical usher, Fulton Elementary recess volunteer, Denver Elementary summer school assistant, and volunteering at the Bethany UCC Church.

Her future plans include attending college and majoring in both Elementary Education and Spanish. Mia reflects the Lions motto: “We Serve!”

The Adamstown Rod and Gun Club’s Annual Kid’s Fishing Rodeo was held on Saturday, May 6. All children, ages 3 to 15, were invited to fish (catching a maximum of four trout each).

There was a large turnout, and people were shoulder to

shoulder at the pond. It was their most successful and best attended fishing rodeo in years!

Food was also available to all the kids who came to fish.

Scripture: Philippians 4:8“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good report, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”

Over the last two weeks we studied “whatever is true, honorable and right.” This week we will examine pure and lovely.

“Whatsoever is pure” ­

hagna, from the same as hagios; properly, clean, i.e. innocent, modest, and perfect. Separate from all heterogeneous or extraneous matter; free from mixture or combination; clean; mere; simple; unmixed; as, pure water; pure clay; pure air. We need to meditate, think on and judge ourselves in motive, action and thoughts with regard to purity; freedom from mixture as the word is defined. Is our character mixed with pride, selfishness and dishonesty? What about our motives; are they selfish or selfless? Levin in the Bible is a picture of sin. If you bake bread you know that Levin is used to make the bread rise.

The Bible says: “A little

Levin, levins the whole lump of dough.” (Galatians 5:9). In other words, if we allow a little sin, soon it takes over and consumes our life. No one ever becomes a murderer, desperate criminal, alcoholic or sexual predicator overnight. All behavior can be traced back to a little Levin ­ a small starting point that continues to be fed. We need to understand and define “pure” from scripture. We should then meditate on the verses that address our problems and seek the strength of God’s indwelling Spirit to overcome; as scripture states, “put to death the deeds of the flesh.”

“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). The problem

of the heart is the heart of the problem. We need to perform spiritual open­heart surgery; God is the doctor, his scalpel is the word of God. Meditate on the pure, unmixed life. Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself with the Kings food. We need to inventory and examine our lives daily against scripture for purity. When we see mixed behavior we need to ignite the furnace and melt off the impurities to become pure gold. Meditate on what is pure; scripture, Christ Himself and purpose obedience and become pure.

Sometimes it is easy to fall into the trap of meditating on all the bad, all of the negative, unlovely, unpleasant events, contentious people and unfortunate circumstances around us. What we think about has a dramatic effect on our life as a whole and contributes immensely to our attitude and actions. We have to be attentive to what we allow into our life. If we feed on the bad news of the world, which is designed to be negative, we will be negative, critical and in an overall sour state of mind. If we feed on that which is lovely, wonderful and uplifting, our attitude will reflect it.

We have to maintain a correct biblical worldview. This world has plenty of negative, evil and not­solovely. The believer is in it (the world), but we are not to be of it. This world is not our home. The Bible says, “set your mind on things above where Christ is” not on this world. (Colossians 3:2). Knowing that our future is not only secure but will be “above what we can ask or think.” Eye has not seen, nor ear heard nor entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for them that love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Next week, we will consider a good report and excellence.

Once a month this year of our Lord 1986, we are featuring a poem by Gladys S. Martin, R. 3, Ephrata and a similar poem by the late Eli Keller, whose work preceded that of Gladys Martin by about 100 years.

Eli Keller was born on December 20, 1825 in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, where his greatgrandfather, the pioneer Joseph Keller had settled. In the spring of 1856, Eli was ordained to the ministry by the Mercersburg Classis of the Reformed Church. For the next eighteen years, he ministered in English and in German to charges in Ohio, but toward the end of the period only in English. He yearned for Pennsylvania and in 1874, returned tither. For the next 27 years, he served the Zionsville Parish in Lehigh County. In 1880, Ursinus College conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. In 1901, Keller retired from the ministry and moved into Allentown. On December 29, 1919, he celebrated his 94th birthday. A few days later, he died peacefully at his home on Chew Street in Allentown.

Eli Keller survived his friend Henry Harbaugh, the beloved Dutch poet (who wrote most of his Dutch poems in 1861 and 1862) by more than half a century. Keller was still writing in the first decade of the 20th century.

We mentioned last month that Keller’s Monet Spruech were printed on pages 71­73 of Daniel Miller’s volume entitled Pennsylvania German, “A Collection of Pennsylvania German Productions In Poetry And Prose.” The second edition was printed in Reading in 1904. Harry Hess Reichard’s 1918 book on Pennsylvania­German Dialect Writings And Their Writers presents a five page chapter on Eli Keller but makes no mention of the Monet Spruech. Neither does Preston Barba in “The Life And Works Of Eli Keller,” which he printed in the “Allentown Morning Call” on May 20, June 3, 10, 17, 24, July 1, 8, 15 and 22, 1967. Barba does mention Keller’s Pennsylvania German almanac which was published in 1885 in Allentown under the title Unser Pennsylfanisch­Deutsch Kalenner For 1885. We think it likely that Keller’s Monet Spruech were originally written for his Dutch almanac, but we can present no proof of this at this time. ­ Since the manuscript notebook in which Keller recorded all his writings in English, German and Dutch is most likely still preserved in the Pennsylvania German Collection of Muhlenberg College, we hope to be able to obtain a xeroxed copy of this manuscript and share some of its contents with you from time to time.

This VFW Day of Service was born from the organization’s award-winning #StillServing campaign launched in 2020 to recognize the ongoing dedication of veterans and service members who continue to serve through service to their communities.

thanks from people using the Rail Trail as they walked along the path on that beautiful day.
