WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31

This Christmas photo was taken in the sanctuary of the Lititz Moravian Church on the first Sunday of Advent. It features approximately 100 poinsettias, given in honor or remembrance of someone, and stands twelve feet tall. Five years ago, the Advent Poinsettia tree was a new addition to the Lititz decoration, a tradition

brought from their Philadelphia area church by the Hartel family. Moravians, often called the Christmas people, have introduced the Poinsettia Tree on the first Sunday of Advent as a sign of God’s love. Hanging from the nearby pillars are lanterns that provided light in another era. Not seen in this photo is stained glass

On either side of the pulpit are the bushy spruces that sparkle with light at the conclusion of the Christmas Vigils. In the stained glass window to the right, decorated with greens and poinsettia, is the tribute to

Warwick settler John George Klein, who gave his 491-acre farm to the Moravians in 1755 to establish the town of Lititz. Unseen in the picture, but high above in this historic sanctuary, is the glowing 110-point Moravian Star.
