Wellbeing Samaritans on hand for anyone distressed by financial crisis Emotional support charity Samaritans is urging anyone concerned about financial pressures or job security to get in contact to talk through any problems and fears that they may not be able to share with family, friends or employers. The charity is aware that people are experiencing financial worries and distress related to the on-going credit crisis. Samaritans volunteers are on hand night and day, up and down the country, to offer confidential, non-judgemental support to anyone experiencing any kind of emotional distress. Samaritans Central London branch has experienced a 25% increase in calls during August and September this year compared to the same months last year. Shaun Kelly, Outreach and Communications Co-ordinator at Central London branch said: ”Samaritans regularly receive calls from people worried about financial issues and debt and recently we have been speaking to individuals concerned about the credit crunch and the latest fears of recession. “Debt is known to contribute to emotional distress and sometimes people in financial difficulty can consider suicide as a way out of the situation that they are in. It is really important for people to talk to somebody about

6

how they are feeling rather than keeping worries to themselves, in order to find a positive way forward.” Samaritans is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via telephone, email, or face to face contact for anyone in need of emotional support. Anyone worried about financial problems can contact Samaritans: Tel: 08457 90 90 90 E: jo@samaritans.org or face to face, visit www.samaritans.org to find details for your local branch

Boscombe’s Coolest Attraction One of Winter’s most exciting & glamorous activities is confirmed for Boscombe this winter from the end of November 2008 until Sunday 22nd February 2009 The Opera House and partners have been working closely with Council officers over the last two months to bring this unique ice rink to the Boscombe residents and visitors this Winter. Tourism

Boscombe Spa Resort Ltd started in April 2007 when four local hoteliers from got together over a cup of coffee their conversation centring on the ever increasing costs of advertising & how they could help each other to fill their beds. Recognising that if they pooled their marketing spends together, they could each benefit from a lower yearly advertising cost whilst promoting themselves to a far wider audience and in turn give them the ability to bring increased visitors to Boscombe Spa. Using this incentive to attract other hoteliers, the original 4 hotels increased to 16 and the brand of Boscombe Spa Resort Hotels was born and the website www.boscombesparesorthotels.co.uk was launched. Soon identifying that in order to progress further there was a need to promote the area as a resort in its own right, within the Bournemouth conurbation, they identified an area starting at Queens Park Golf course and culminating at Boscombe Chine Gardens, across the beach to Woodland Walk creating a triangle. Within that area was to be the Boscombe Spa Resort. Now that the word was out, cafes, restaurants, entertainment venues and bars and leisure companies 10

in the area wanted to be involved in this new exciting project and Boscombe Spa Resort (BSR) was launched and the website www.boscombespareresort.co.uk went live offering prospective visitors and guests information on a wide range of sporting activities, eating out experiencess, café culture, efficient transport, local markets, fun fares and a great shopping offers and by linking with the Opera House they could now offer show packages and quality accommodation to stay in. With the footfall now created by the hotels the VIP discount card (free to guests) was introduced in March 2008. BSR now has 41 members offering anything from 50% off a day pass in the gym, 2 for 1 lunch deals, to 10% off food and drinks in many of the cafes and restaurants. Boscombe Spa Resort now markets itself as a place that gives their guests money back to their guests during their stay! The company's overall objective is to promote Boscombe Spa Resort to tourists as a great alternative holiday destination, offering a quieter location with plenty to do, whether it is rest and relaxation, a great choice of water sports or a base for exploration. Boscombe Spa's beaches are some of the finest in the country and the town has a character of its own. Why would anyone want to stay anywhere else? To get involved contact Bryn Jones T: 07853 750009

Boscombe’s Little Gems A Little Piece of Tradition

The American Touch

“Pop in for a coffee sometime, come and see what we do” Rachel said. I’m so glad I did. On a Saturday whilst driving through Boscombe East I decided to pop in and see what Adams Apple was all about. Offering men’s grooming in a clean, relaxed and extremely friendly environment they offer traditional treatments with a modern twist, this place is a real little gem!

Andrea Mascolo is a Bournemouth girl with an American touch. Having met and married Guy Mascolo of the Toni&Guy empire, she moved to the USA in the 1970’s to start a family.

Their shaving service includes the traditional use of hot towels and facial massage for a luxurious shaving experience. They use a straight razor along with selected facial creams to give the closest shave and the smoothest refreshed skin I’ve ever seen on a fella! They also offer a hair cutting and styling service which combines traditional grooming methods with the latest cutting expertise ~ what’s more they even offer eyebrow waxing ~ this team really know what they’re doing . . the coffee’s not bad either:-) Having seen what they do and seeing how their clients, both young and mature, really enjoy the whole experience I will definitely be surprising a couple of the men in my life to a bit of pampering ~ a really unique Christmas Present. For an appointment or to enquire about their gift vouchers call Adams Apple on 07768 457461. Don’t forget to take this mag along when you go there ~ you’ll get 10% off any treatments ~ a real bargain!

When the amicable separation from Guy came about she went things alone and over the next 20 years opened Garbo Nail Salons in New York, Miami and Boston. In 2001, with her parents health deteriorating she took the move back to Bournemouth to take care of them. During this time she was approached to open a Garbo Nail Salon here in the UK and in 2004 opened the Parkstone branch. She went on to open another 8 salons in the UK and another 2 salons in Spain. Andrea now prefers to take life a little slower and now concentrates on her salon in Sea Road, Boscombe. With great staff and a very warm and friendly welcome it’s the perfect place to give yourself a touch of indulgence. Nail and pedicure treatments, waxing, massage and non-surgical beauty treatments, there’s not a lot Garbo’s can’t do to give you that little lift:-) A real little treasure right in the heart of Boscombe ~ pop in and have a chat, they really will have time for you ~ oh, and it’s the perfect place to get all those important treatments done in preparation for your Christmas Party:-) For more information call Garbo on 01202 303387.

potential custom household money. Whatever the crisis is; it can result in no money for food.

“What's for tea, Mum, I'm starving?” is a familiar question as the children come tumbling through the door from school. Imagine the heartache of the mums who know the cupboards and fridge are empty and have to say “nothing” to their children. And imagine the feeling in sending the children to bed hungry, knowing that there is nothing for breakfast either, and no money to buy food for another day's tea. This is the reality for many more families in the Bournemouth and Boscombe area than most of us realise. And it's not only families who cannot feed themselves; it is single people, young people and older people. Why is this happening in the 21st century in Bournemouth & Boscombe? For some a crisis can hit when a large unexpected bill eats up any spare money. It might be that the car needs fixing, or the boiler breaks down or the new school term means another set of school uniforms. Or maybe an elderly relative is ill in hospital far away and the travelling costs are expensive. Perhaps the benefits are on hold for longer than the 12

The Bournemouth Food Bank was launched by Bournemouth Vineyard Church in December 2007 to help alleviate these situations and get food to people who need it. We work with community professionals, these maybe health visitors, support workers, GPs, head teachers, church leaders, and also with community groups such as Citizens Advice Bureaus, housing associations, mental health teams. We give food vouchers to the community individuals and groups and they distribute them to their clients. Each voucher gives the client three days of non-perishable food, and they can access food from the Food Bank three times. The Food Bank is not a continual food programme for the same clients. Where we can, we aim to work with the community professionals to help the client with the underlying reasons which precipitated the need for emergency food. If you are a professional who sees a client who needs food, please contact us. Or if anyone can help us by giving us food or money . . . we always need tinned meat, tinned fish, long life fruit juices and milk, sugar and boxed cereals. Let's work together and not have any adults or children in our town wake up or go to bed hungry For more information, please contact : Vicki Lent Tel: 07875 634 179

Waves ~ New Development in Boscombe At last, it's all beginning to come together in Boscombe. The Pier's being restored, there's a new, hip hotel and, at the end of a long, dark tunnel, after years of frustrating delays and budget cuts surrounding the formation of the Surf Reef, the centre piece of this complicated chapter of urban renewal looks set to be a truly impressive feature of the seascape, putting Boscombe squarely and fairly on the nation's mindset. With it, comes a quickening sense of excitement ~ it's not just that the artificial surf will allow Boscombe to rival Croyde and Cornwall, so much as that there's a revival, almost a reinvention on the landward side as well, and it's all happening . . . fast. The latest addition to the real estate scene is an architecturally innovative icon of design on the corner of Owls Road and Boscombe Spa Road. Clad in K Render, Waves is a distinguished, contemporary building, where Saunders Architects have really sought to blend modern styling into the eclectic mixture of the locale's varying architectural heritage. 14 individually presented, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments on ground plus three floors, varying in size from 600 to 1,200 sq feet, all with secure, assigned car-parking at basement level and each with a rack for surf board storage, are now available for viewing. There are even three show flats, now open, which have been “dressed” with furniture and soft fabrics to save your imagination from having to work overtime. Representatives from YOUhome®, the local

estate agents, are on hand 7 days per week to answer your enquiries and show you round the property. The project is the latest addition to the growing portfolio of achievement for Landmark Estates, the local family development company with a long history of development, whose Marketing Director, Henry Lumby, said this week, “Waves stands out so far ahead of the competition in terms of standard of construction and quality of fittings that it's hard to see why a buyer would look elsewhere. We've really put our heart and soul into this one.” Alan Mather, Sales Director for YOUhome® commented “This is a development on a human scale and we are expecting considerable interest from both investors and occupiers alike. The pricing is keen, reflecting current market conditions and, certainly, the specification has to be seen in situ to be appreciated properly.”

Just for a Giggle:-) Christmas Cake with a Little Twist :-)

A Fairy Tale

You'll need the following:

It was supposed to be a happy time, but it wasn't. Santa was really peeved! It was Christmas Eve and nothing was going right.

1 cup of water 1 cup of sugar 4 large eggs 2 cups of dried fruit 1 teaspoon of salt 1 cup of brown sugar Lemon juice Nuts 1 bottle of whisky

Mrs. Claus had burned all the Christmas cookies. The Elves were bitching about not getting paid for the overtime they had put in while making toys, and the reindeer had been partying all afternoon and were dead drunk. They had taken the sleigh out for a spin earlier in the day and crashed it into a tree, breaking off one of the runners.

Method Sample the whisky to check for quality. Take a large bowl. Check the whisky again. To be sure it's the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and beat again. Make sure the whisky is still OK. Cry another tup. Tune up the mixer. Beat two leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Mix on the turner. If the fired druit gets stuck in the beaterers, pry it goose with a drewscriver. Sample the whisky to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who cares? Check the whisky. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Spoon the sugar or something. Whatever you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out of the window. Check the whisky again and go to bed:-) 16

Food bit

Santa was beside himself with anger. "I can’t believe it! I've got to deliver millions of presents all over the world in just a few hours from now and all my reindeer are drunk, my Elves are on strike and I don't even have a Christmas tree! I sent that stupid Little Angel out hours a go to find a tree and she isn't even back yet! What am I going to do?" Just then the Little Angel opened the front door and stepped in from the snowy night, dragging a Christmas tree, "Yo, Santa, where do you want me to stick the Christmas Tree this year?" And thus the tradition of Angels perched atop the Christmas trees came to pass:-)

Let it cool, remember it will be soft when it comes out of the oven it only hardens as it cools. Add another couple of handfuls of popped popcorn just to get a lovely white snow effect. Put into jars. Add some ribbons and it’s ready.

This year Boscombe’s late night shopping will be on a Friday evening until 8pm. On Friday 5th, 12th and 19th December, there’ll be plenty of great Christmas ideas in the shops, including entertainment on Boscombe Precinct, and free car parking from 6pm in both the undercover Britannia Car park (behind the Sovereign Centre) and the main Hawkwood Road and Palmerston Road car parks run by the council.

Foody Fridays Each Friday Boscombe will be promoting ‘Foody Fridays’ ~ a new market specializing in ‘Foody’ ideas. Come along and try out home cooked treats to eat hot ‘on the go’ from freshly made pizzas, hot soups, Jerk Chicken, to home made delicious cakes, and collect this week’s Special Recipe Leaflet, sponsored by one of Boscombe’s great eateries, giving you great ideas for family meals, and showing you where to buy locally sourced quality ingredients at great prices to create your own dishes at home.

Boscombe’s Inspierational Get Together All readers, friends and family are invited to join Inspieration (The Friends of Boscombe Pier) and their sponsors at the pier entrance on Saturday 13th December at 5pm for ‘Sweets, Treats and a Sing-along’. You will hear The Poole and Parkstone Choir as they descend through the gardens towards the pier and then you are cordially invited by The Friends of Boscombe Chine Gardens to join them in a glass of mulled wine in The Neptune – so wrap up warm, bring a candle or lantern and start practising “Away in a Manger”! So, how can we secure the money that we have invested in savings and pensions and/or how can we keep our mortgage rate competitive in these difficult times? Everyone who has invested in anything other than in a cash savings account in the last 2 years, whether you invested in an ISA, pension or bond will more than likely be showing a capital loss. The best way to deal with the present situation, no matter how long your money has been invested, is not to panic and sell, but to take stock of what this money was originally invested for and then sit down with an adviser to see if you are still on course to meet your aims and objectives. Mortgages have been derailed by the banks refusing to lend to one another. This in turn has affected the products available on the open market. With interest rates coming down and with government intervention we are now seeing a steady stream of more competitive products coming to the market. If your mortgage deal has already ended or is about to end, the sensible action to take is to speak to both your current lender and also a specialised mortgage adviser, both of whom are professionals in their markets.
