It’s going to be a tough year for so many of us, but I’d rather not stir up more doom and gloom and as such would ask everyone to support the businesses in the town. Town News The Surf Reef The base layer of Bournemouth's innovative artificial surf reef is approximately the size of a football pitch and is now complete. The 37 specially designed geotextile bags that create the base layer have been anchored to the sea bed and pumped hard with more than 7,000m3 of sand. Further to the confirmation last week that the weather was continuing to cause problems, Bournemouth Council and ASR Ltd have now agreed to suspend construction for the winter, as the shorter days and winter weather do not permit long enough working sessions for safe and effective construction on this major underwater project. ASR has agreed that they will set up back on site next April, when weather conditions are more favourable again. Difficult weather conditions over the summer months brought about a later than anticipated start to the project, with the first bags being deployed on-site on Friday 29th August 2008. This has inevitably had a knock-on effect to the anticipated completion date, and ASR Ltd believes that the expected weather conditions over the winter months will make it impossible to complete the reef this year, as originally planned. The ASR team have now packed up their equipment and are set to return in April 2009, with completion by September 2009, weather permitting. Cllr Beverley Dunlop, Cabinet Member for Economy and Tourism said, “We are really pleased that this pioneering 8

regeneration scheme is not being held back by the recession. A new seafront venue is being created on our doorstep which will continue to boost the local economy for decades to come. Our commitment remains as strong as ever. I'm delighted that we've reached this significant milestone by continuing the land-based elements and completing the base layer of the reef. I know that many residents and in particular the local surfing community, Boscombe traders and hoteliers have been watching this fascinating project closely and are as keen as I am to see it completed. But I also know that they recognise that this is a long-term investment and will share my determination to get this right and bring a reef to Boscombe that the town can be proud of, and bring the economic and regeneration benefits.” For information and updates on the Boscombe Spa Village regeneration programme and the surf reef visit www.bournemouth.co.uk Sorted Surf Shop will be opening two new stores, a Surf Shop and a Surf School at the Overstrand complex located on Boscombe Seafront in front of the Artificial Surf Reef.

Tourism ~ Urban Beach Hotel

Right in the heart of Boscombe and just a few short steps from the beach lies the Urban Beach, a boutique hotel, bar & bistro which opened in 2005 and has gone on to become the hippest place to hang out in Bournemouth. Having recently been awarded best small hotel and best bar in Bournemouth, the Urban Beach is unstoppable in its drive to go one step further than your average beach B’n’B: all 12 bedrooms are individually designed and feature beautiful chandeliers, silk throws, world art and decadent bathrooms; staff are friendly, knowledgeable about the area, and happy to help. Tearing yourself away from your sumptuous room is tricky, but if you do the downstairs bistro has a relaxed and eclectic feel. The mirror and sandblasted glass bar, driftwood lamps, funky parrot print chairs and splashes of urban decadence all create the perfect atmosphere for informal eating. As well as a great full English breakfast menu, the bistro also does food all day and prides itself on sourcing local 10

produce and providing the best of British food with an Urban Beach twist. Dishes such as 'Local Crayfish Tails' and 'New Forest Steak, Guinness and Vegetable Pie' are firm favorites and can be washed down with a glass of wine from the carefully crafted wine list. If you want to push the surf board out after a day on the waves, the resident mixologists can create the perfect cocktail; choose from their unique list ~ Dorset Mojito is the UB signature ~ or ask for your own individual recipe. Urban Beach is located at 23 Argyll Road, Bournemouth BH5 1EB T: 01202 301509 W: www.urbanbeachhotel.co.uk

Spotlight on . . . Sean Gardiner A passion for photography was always something I had going on in the background as a hobby, but moving to Boscombe was the catalyst for a complete career shift. The move enabled me to live close to the beach, and signalled a new creative focus in my business life. After an international twenty year career in the automotive industry, specialising in robotic paint systems, I've found my passion in both photography and in creatively working with individuals and businesses to help them achieve greater things. The change came about when I started learning about Personal Development and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis). This led me to train as a coach, and in helping other people achieve their goals and break down barriers, I was able to tap into my own creativity, and discovered an ability to capture photographic images which show the true nature of people and places. Recently I've been lucky enough to do promotional photo shoots for the record label Universal Music, with new artists such as up and coming singer Imelda May. After doing some shots whilst Imelda was in makeup, Hollywood director Julien Temple chose the vintage makeup mirror I'd selected as a prop, as the start and end feature for Imelda's latest video, (www.imeldamay.com) ~ that was a great day! Local online TV station (www.isstv.tv) asked me to do an interview with legendary celebrity photographer Terry

O'Neill, which I loved doing, despite being a little nervous! It's a real contrast to working in the automotive industry, but is so much more rewarding. I've also been getting involved in helping run Bournemouth's 'BomoCreatives', a unique social networking group especially for creative people of all kinds (www.bomocreatives.co.uk). Hot off the press The FJB Chine Hotel in Boscombe Spa Road have selected some of Sean's fantastic images for their beautifully refurbished reception and restaurant, to “capture the essence” of the spectacular surrounding area for visitors and guests. Sean can be contacted on 0845 2601 567 E: sean@the-reef.co.uk or visit www.seangardiner.co.uk to see more of his photography

New Year Resolutions

For many couples Christmas and new year will have brought additional pressure to an already strained relationship. If you are in that situation and have reached the decision to sort matters out, whether it means separation or a divorce or arranging better contact for a child, who do you turn to? Getting early independent legal advice enables you to know where you stand and a solicitor can guide you on the right path to achieve your objectives whilst keeping conflict and potential costs to a minimum. Each person will have different requirements and concerns and although the law has a standard list of core factors to be applied to each situation, it also allows for considerable discretion to be used to achieve a fair and reasonable outcome in each case. No two cases will be the same and an experienced legal advisor can provide options and solutions that may not have been considered. A solicitor can ensure that your situation will be dealt with fairly, particularly where a relationship has previously be unequal

and can provide support to guide you through a difficult time. So, if you have made a resolution, let us help you achieve it. To find out more contact: Humphries Kirk 1 Southbourne Grove Bournemouth BH6 3RD Tel: 01202 421111 E: bournemouth@hklaw.eu W: www.humphrieskirk.co.uk

Food bites ~ Spice up your Valentines Day! If you are cutting back on your spending or want to avoid the last minute panic of booking a table at a restaurant, you can always surprise your loved one by cooking a gorgeous three course meal at home on Valentines Day. If you have never considered Mexican food to be sexy, here are some things to think about. Chillies get the blood rushing, your heart pumping and release endorphins that give you a natural high. Avocados were referred to by the Aztecs as ''ahuacat''meaning testicle. The Aztecs considered avocados so powerful that maidens had to stay home during the harvest. Chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylamine that is released naturally in the human body when you're in love! To make a love-inspiring feast at home, try this menu. Don't forget it's important to set the scene: turn off the T.V., light some candles, and make the table beautiful.

Nachos with Salsa and Guacamole I bag of plain tortilla chips 250 g grated cheese 1 jar ready- made salsa 1 ripe avocado

1 clove garlic, crushed 1 lime 1 tomato

Method To make the guacamole: mash the avocado and combine with crushed garlic, chopped tomato, and the juice of 1 lime. Put to one side. 16

Spread a layer of tortilla chips onto a plate and sprinkle a layer of grated cheese and a thin layer of the salsa on top. Repeat until you have two layers. The Nachos can be finished off either under the grill or in the microwave. Don't cook them until you are ready to eat- they take around four minutes in a microwave and need to cook just long enough for the cheese to melt. Serve topped with a spoonful of guacamole.

Chicken in Poblano Sauce This dish contains both chilli and chocolate ~ both of which are known aphrodisiacs! The true Poblano sauce can take anywhere from 3 hours to 3 days to prepare and requires all kinds of exotic ingredients. My recipe is a simpler version, with most ingredients available from Lidl or Aldi. (You can buy the chicken breast already boned from E Brown Butchers on Palmerston Road). 2 onions thinly chopped 5 tbs peanut butter 1 small square 70% dark chocolate 400 ml tin chopped tomatoes 500 ml chicken stock 3 cloves crushed garlic

1 tsp Cinnamon tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp cloves 1/4 tsp of star anise I tsp of hot chilli powder or 1 fresh chopped chilli 2 tbs of butter 2 chicken breasts 1/2

Method Fry the onions in 2 tbsp of oil until transparent. Add the crushed garlic, and the spices. Stir together. Next add the peanut butter, chicken stock, and tomatoes. Simmer for ten minutes. Remove from the heat and puree in a blender or mixer. Return to the heat and add the chocolate. Simmer for half an hour. Brown the chicken breasts in the butter on top of the stove. Add the poblano sauce, cover, and simmer for 10- 15 minutes or until the chicken is done. Serve with baked sweet potatoes or rice and garnish with fresh pomegranate seeds.

For afters, I would suggest fresh strawberries and a Lovely Chocolate Martini: Put about six ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Add 11/2 fl oz of vodka Add 31/4 fl oz of white cream de cacao Strain and pour into Martini glass which has been rimmed with cocoa powder. Drop a Cadburys chocolate star into the bottom. Indulge:-)

A Lighter Look on Life by Keith Hart

remember what they had done to give the impression that they really were this easy. But the sales figures never lie. It may be a juvenile and corny approach but the Teddys of this world tell me that it works, if not every time, enough times. Then there are those who go down the jewellery route, let’s call them the Samuels. They buy the expensive (looking) necklace, bracelet or earrings, and they want maximum return for their investment, or to put it crudely, more bangs for their bucks, and you can read that any way you see fit. These guys are forward looking and playing the long game. The Teddy might catch the right mood for Valentines Night, and the weekend after that, and the white bear with pink bits could even meet the Easter bunny if he’s lucky, but what girl is going to take him out and show him off to her mates?

Yes, it’s that time of year again. That month when the Christmas chocolate is all finished, and it’s just a bit early for the Easter eggs ~ it must be time to stock up for the really big choc-fest, St. Valentine’s Day. Or perhaps your vision of Mr Right (or Mr Right Now) is low fat, cholesterol free and brimming with healthy vitamins. That probably means you’re the romantic type. Yes, I see it now, I’m gazing into your starry eyes and I see Roses roses, yes, definitely roses, (sorry about that), yes, roses, champagne, and soft toys. Yes, it’s that time of year again. The Samuels know the power of marketing. Gold and silver body adornment does just as good a job as Teddy with the added benefit of simultaneously advertising the buyer as someone with money, taste and style, especially if they have actually got money, taste and style. The bling is aimed at a key demographic ~ the FG1s (friends of girlfriend) ~ with the subtle subliminal message “when she’s finished with him I wouldn’t mind some of that”. Now that’s really cute. Why doesn’t everyone aspire to something a bit less obvious on this most obvious of days? Why not offer charm? (and I don’t mean another bracelet.) Being charming means finding a gift that shows that you actually listen to your partner. Take a genuine interest in what makes them tick, as a human being. What are they passionate about? Buy them something related to this passion that they would never have thought of buying for themselves. Being charming means encouraging them to talk about their interests, and not interrupting them so you can steer the conversation round to your own interests. Being charming creates a genuine connection between you that will last a long time. Why not give it a try? Someone once said that “Charm is a way of getting the answer yes without having asked any clear question” and on Valentine’s Day what could be cuter than that?
