Welcome . . . Well . . . what a few month’s it’s been again. . . last month we were pleased to be asked to join Boscombe & Southbourne Rotary Club for a fantastic lunch after which we gave an informal presentation of ‘It’s All About Boscombe’ which seemed to be enjoyed by all ~ thanks to everyone who attended and made us feel so very welcome ~ you know who you are:-) The recent E-Cigarette evening I hosted went down well and as a result I am pleased that 2 attendees purchased their own E-Cigs and have been off the tobacco ever since! I’m pleased to say that there’s a few eateries locally that have allowed me to use my E-Cig and in the next issue I will be giving free advertising to any pub, restaurant or café that agrees to the use of E-Cigarettes in their premises ~ if you’re a business that’s interested in free advertising in return for displaying a little window sticker then please get in touch. If you’re thinking of quitting the fags and are interested in joining me for an informal evening to sample an E-Cigarette for yourself then please don’t hesitate to email me at studio@gazelledesign.co.uk or text me on 07718 031048. The taster evenings at Golden Chef Oriental Take-Away were extremely well attended and positive feedback was gratefully received from all attendees ~ the staff at Golden Chef found it an invaluable exercise and as such will be hosting a few more evenings later in the year ~ we’ll keep you informed:-) Please feel free to contact me at my email address helene@gazelledesign.co.uk if you have any news, information, events or chit-chat . . . all feedback is gratefully accepted.

Wellbeing ~ Boscombe & Springbourne Health Centre open across the UK providing a free, flexible service open 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
Brand new Boscombe Health Centre announces 150th patient after one week of opening Since the new Boscombe and Springbourne Health Centre opened on 1st July, it has welcomed 150 patients through its doors during the first week of opening, accessing their walk-in and pre-booked GP services. Based in the heart of Boscombe, on Shelley Road, the centre is unique in the area in that it is open from 8am until 8pm every single day of the year, providing maximum flexibility for visitors. The centre is currently the first of its type to open in Dorset and is part of 152 new GP health centres to 6
Centre manager, Chris Hughes enthused ‘we’ve had a very encouraging first week with 150 patients through our doors already. The majority of these have been walk-in patients, although we’ve had quite a few people register with us, too. We’ve helped patients with all sorts of requirements, from children with rashes to holidaymakers with bad sunburn and patients visiting us when their own surgery is closed during the evening or at weekends. We also helped one patient who was in Bournemouth on business and was feeling quite unwell – the soonest he could book an appointment with his doctor at home for his ears to be syringed was in 2 weeks’ time, but during his visit to Bournemouth his condition worsened. Within minutes of visiting our centre, we’d managed to syringe his ears and get him back to feeling 100% again! The feedback from our visitors has been extremely positive, too ~ many patients have commented on how helpful the staff are and that a centre with such flexible opening hours is exactly what the area needs.’ For more information on the centre, please visit the new Boscombe and Springbourne Health Centre, 11 Shelley Road, Bournemouth BH1 4JQ T: 01202 727969 or visit www.nwic.org.uk

If the grass is growing well, the blades remain succulent and the lawn is easy to mow. You can now give lawn feed one more time. After this, only give special nitrogen-free autumn fertiliser. The grass must be able to ripen before winter in order to be more frost-resistant.

The flowers on some plants have already finished flowering. If you 'dead head' them (remove the dead flowers regularly), it helps the plant thrive and flower more. Sometimes you will even get a second or follow-on flowering, which means that you can enjoy scent and colour in your garden even longer.
Lay a lawn This is an excellent month for laying and sowing a new lawn. August can be a damp month and grass seed will germinate quickly. Plus the grass can then be fairly well-established before winter comes.
Pruning Now is the time to prune hedges, you can prune fast-growing hedges such as privet and leylandii hedges in August. Do not do it later in the year. The shoots that grow on the hedge after pruning need to have plenty of time to ripen before winter comes.

Just for a giggle:-) huddled in fleeces on cold damp sand, pausing only to warm up by burning your mouth on a hot drink; camping next to a landfill site where seagulls come to steal your food at every meal and where it rains all day every day of your holiday.
Ah, the school summer holidays! A time to leave behind your work stress and replace it with the infinitely greater stress of keeping your children amused.
What's so great about staying in a cottage with no TV, miles from anywhere, with nothing for the kids to do but argue with each other, and one of those dribbly tubes attached to the taps rather than a proper shower? Nothing! What's so great about “getting away from it all” when the things you're getting away from are the very things you work all your life to afford? Give me a TV, computer games and a power shower and I'll give you contented children and a happy parent:-)
by Pete Granger
This was never how it was portrayed in the parenting books: idyllic sun-dappled picnics in ancient woodland by babbling brooks; trips to the beach to lay dozing on sunscorched sand, pausing only to cool down with a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the sea; camping in a farmer's field next to a paddock of horses who come to be fed carrots every night under an inky-black starstudded sky. The reality is rather different: non-idyllic showery picnics on a narrow strip of grass next to a busy road; trips to the beach to sit 16

Originally with a small group of volunteers and a small one day gathering, this event has evolved into a whole weekend of live music, theatre and dance, with an art gallery, arena events, children’s activities, art and craft workshops and loads of local charity and community group stalls. Oh, and what’s more there’s great food on offer and a beer tent! To find out more about the fair or to get involved or even showcase your talent at the event: T: 01202 392318

Ravishing Raw Salad Serves 2 At Café Boscanova we are receiving more and more requests for ‘raw’ food. A ‘raw’ vegan diet consists of unprocessed plant foods that have not been heated above 46c (115f). Raw foodists believe that foods cooked above this temperature lose much of their nutritional value. Typical raw foods include fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains and legumes. Now, all this might seem simple, but if you want to make a make raw hummus, you can’t just use a can of shop-bought chickpeas; you have to soak and sprout your own, since the beans inside the can have already been cooked ~ and breads, crackers and cookies have to be dehydrated rather than baked. At Café Boscanova we have been experimenting with raw food recipes. Our summer menu features a gorgeous raw sunflower seed dip. It consists of sunflower seeds that have been soaked and then pureed with lemon and dill and cold pressed flax oil which can be served with Biscru, an amazing wheat, dairy and sugar-free biscuit imported from France.

Method Chop all your fruits, herbs and vegetables and add to a bowl. In a cup, mix 4 tablespoons of the oil with the juice of an orange and lime. Add to the salad and toss. A Lighter Look on Life Obituary The Late Mr Common Sense Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer 20
sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.
