Welcome . . . Oh well, summer’s just about over, the tourists are far and few between now, the new Boscombe Overstrand is looking fab, sadly Gilbert didn’t make it, this year’s Airshow was amazing, the kids are back at school and the reef and the stream of surfers it promises to bring over the winter months are waiting with baited breath . . . you know the ones with the ‘six packs’:-) . . . roll on the winter! As ‘It’s All About Boscombe’ celebrates it’s first year, I am proud to announce that it has been welcomed with open arms by Bournemouth Tourism and is now regularly being distributed from its office in Westover Road, giving the mag an even wider audience and a much bigger potential market for its advertisers ~ great news for everyone! Following on from the last issue, I’m pleased to say that a couple of eateries have allowed me to use my E-Cig ~ one of them is La Scalla in Wallisdown, fab food, fab service which is well above the call of duty! I would like to personally thank Tony for allowing me to have my ‘after dinner smoke’ and for making me feel so welcome! (Word on the street is that the soon to be opened ‘Beach Bar and Restaurant’ ~ previously La Botte ~ will also be allowing E-Cigs to be used in their premises ~ confirmation in December’s issue. If you are a pub or restaurant etc., that wants to make E-Cig ‘smokers’ welcome in your premises then please get in touch . . . I’d be pleased to come along and chat to you and maybe even shout about your company in the next issue ~ for free!

Wellbeing ~ The Butterfly Foundation The Butterfly Foundation is a local charity working with male and female survivors of domestic abuse and demonstrates in a radically new way the power of the arts to transform people's lives. The charity members have learnt to empower themselves and re-build their self-esteem to recover from the effects of domestic abuse by learning to express their emotions and experiences through the creative arts. A photographic exhibition of work from the members of The Butterfly Foundation is touring libraries in Bournemouth and Poole and will be on display for a week in Boscombe Library from Monday 5th October 2009. The photography in the exhibition is sympathetic to the needs of men and women who have suffered from abuse. Throughout the summer Butterfly has also been working with Vita Nova which is another established local charity whose work as a theatre company relies upon the participation of recovering addicts. These two Charities deal with different social issues that are linked in society and 6
are self perpetuating as they damage peoples lives. It has been reported that Alcohol and Drug use is frequently associated with domestic abuse; twothirds of victims of domestic violence reported that alcohol was involved in the incident.
In culmination of this collaborative work an 'invisible theatre' performance by members of both charities will be in Boscombe on 25th November ~ the day is designated by the UN as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women as hundreds of organisations around the world participate in activities ranging from media programmes to demonstrations, conferences, exhibitions and performances to oppose the use of domestic violence which is perhaps the most pervasive human rights violation that we know today. For more information on the charities and their work visit www.thebutterflyfoundation.org.uk T: 01202 463016 or visit www.vitanova.co.uk T: 01202 309999

Town News ~ Cleaning up Boscombe – bit by bit
The East Cliff, Springbourne and Boscombe West SNT (Safer Neighbourhood Team) and their partners are working together to cleanup Boscombe and the surrounding area, a bit at a time. Under a new scheme, called Partnership Perimeter Policing (PPP), the partners focus their attention on a small area ~ approximately 100 square meters ~ with the aim of improving quality of life there. The partners began their work on Boscombe precinct back in June. Since then, the local authority has arranged for parts of the precinct to be painted and jet-washed and the area is now cleaned on a daily basis by Big Issue sellers. Local traders have been ensuring that

the grounds surrounding their businesses are permanently free from rubbish, and MacDonalds' staff are conducting a daily clean-through of the precinct. Meanwhile, staff from the Sovereign Centre are tidying up the alleyways around the centre on a regular basis. Since work began, Safer Neighbourhood Officers have been conducting high-visibility patrols in the area, dealing with anyone acting anti-socially. Once it was agreed that significant improvements to this area had been made, and were being maintained, the partners expanded the scheme to cover Roumelia Lane, setting up a community group called the Friends of Roumelia Lane. The area covered by PPP is now widening to include the whole of the precinct and surrounding roads, including Hawkwood Road and Centenary Way. The partners will expand the area again once improvements have been made. It is intended that, eventually, the entire area covered by the East Cliff, Springbourne and Boscombe West SNT will be covered by the scheme. Welcome to the pilot edition of the The Green Room, Boscombe's first bi-monthly surf report. This month's edition will give a brief biography of the author and his first few weeks as a resident Boscombe surfer, before tackling the meatier subject of Weight’s Reef! Well, summer has once again passed us by, but with its ending came an opportunity for a young(ish) surfer to try and live his dream of surfing both dawn and dusk (surf permitting), with a little bit of work in between. With a two month window between leaving his current house in Southampton and moving in with his girlfriend, he stumbled across a room in a flat overlooking the pier ~ 15 minutes later he had moved in. His first surf came shortly after ~ a stormy 3ft of south westerly swell, thrusting him straight into the water and the lifestyle he craved. The reef appeared to be working with this first South Westerly of the autumn, but with a healthy sized crew of surfers already scrapping over the waves it wasn't until the 2nd week of September that the author got his first taste of the sandbags. Paddling out in a small swell at 6am on a dark Wednesday morning, he was immediately struck by just how far the reef was from the shore. On

closer inspection it was throwing up an extra foot or so of swell than the beach break, and although taking off in about 6 inches of water there were decent rides to be had, a short left, and a long and dumpy right. So, the reef has a wave! Success? Well, yes but the real test will come in the bigger swell that will hopefully materialise over the next few months. The waves have switched direction over the past couple of weeks, leaving the reef temporarily redundant, although luckily allowing the author to re-acquaint himself with the dawn and dusk surf he so craved in the beach break on the west of the pier. Watch this space for the next update from the water. Any comments or thoughts please email Oli at greenroomsurfing@googlemail.com and I’m assured he’ll to get back to you.

Get Gardening ~ Berried Treasure Plants producing berries such as Pyracantha (Firethorn), Berberis (Barberry) and Cotoneaster provide a real treasure trove of options for the gardener. There are lots of berry bearing plants to choose from at Golden Acres. This selection will help you get started on your search without resorting to an old pirate's map with an `X' marking the spot! Some Pyracanthas will produce enormous crops of brilliant berries providing an outstanding seasonal spectacle. For really striking effect consider putting two together. Being evergreens, Pyracanthas keep their leaves all year round and are especially striking on grey winter days when the berries are still present on many of the varieties. Another bonus is that they can attract birds for nesting and food. Barberry or Berberis is another of the berried treasures which are functional as well as beautiful. Some varieties are especially suitable for informal hedging and look stunning whilst providing a vandal resistant hedge. These vigorous, arching evergreen shrubs have spiny stems and glossy dark green spiny leaves. In mid to late spring you'll be able to enjoy a profuse show of small dark orange flowers. In autumn, blue black berries follow. Cotoneaster is a favourite right around the country 'and as a hardy, low maintenance shrub, 14

Just for a giggle:-) by Pete Granger
It will soon be November, and with it comes the promise of Bonfire Night.
When I were a lad we'd spend the weeks leading up to November 5th gathering wood to build the biggest bonfire we could. That usually meant begging our neighbours for any rotten old wood they didn't mind us burning. Sometimes it meant stealing their fences. But it was all in a good cause! We had a folk hero to honour. A man of insight and integrity who, with hindsight, was probably the world's first attempted suicide bomber. It is widely believed that Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirator Robert Catesby were the brains behind the Gunpowder Plot, but I don't believe that for a minute. I think the Chinese masterminded the entire operation in a highly successful medieval international

marketing ploy to bolster the sale of their fireworks abroad. And boy was it successful. For over four hundred years now they've had a guaranteed income every November from Brits celebrating Guy Fawkes night. Things are very different now of course. Environmental concerns have by-and-large outlawed the bonfire in the back garden. Health and safety issues have banned small children blowing off their own limbs. And even the hero of the day, Guy Fawkes, would be given an orange jumpsuit and sent on an all-expensespaid extended holiday to Guantanamo Bay if he tried to enact his audacious scheme today. But whether we consider Guy Fawkes to be a hero or a terrorist, I think we should all be grateful to him for one thing at least. He was considerate enough to attempt his destruction of parliament in the cold, dark month of November. Imagine how hot we'd all get standing around a bonfire in the middle of June, setting off fireworks in broad daylight!

Food bites ~ Soup! Black Bean Chipotle and Cocoa Soup Serves 4-6
A hot-tub for your soul! The weather is cooling down, leaves are falling off the trees, and its time to search out the sweaters, wellies and raincoats. At this time of year, nothing can cheer up a dreary weekend more than a big pot of soup. Soup is known all over the world as a cheap and economical dish, but this shouldn't take away from the art, creativity and versatility of soup-making. Black Bean Chipotle and Cocoa soup was a favourite at Café Boscanova last winter. It wins the award for our most requested recipe. I have cut down quantities. The pot I make at the cafe usually serves about 60. This recipe serves 4-6. In my opinion, it's not worth making less. If it's too much, freeze some or give some away to your friends. Soup is a pot of happiness, much nicer sometimes than flowers.
500 g of black turtle beans
2 chipotle chillies
3 onions
3 spoons of adobe sauce
2tbs veg oil
1 tsp of salt
3 litres of water 3 large cloves of garlic
1 decent size glass of red wine. (Optional)
1 tin of tomatoes
3-4tbs chopped coriander
4tbs of double concentrate tomato puree
3 litres of water
6 tbs of cumin
Square of dark chocolate about 1” in size
Method Soak beans overnight then drain. Peel and finely cut the onions and then put in a large pot and cook in oil until translucent. Add the beans to the pot cover with the water. Add the three garlic cloves. Bring to a boil then simmer for an hour or until the beans are tender. Add the tin of tomatoes the chillies, wine, and salt. Blend the whole mix, either in a mixer, blender or with a mixing stick. Return to the saucepan. Add the dark chocolate. Add the cumin. serve topped with chopped coriander and a fresh yoghurt. A Lighter Look on Life It’s All About Being British:-) I sometimes wonder, wonder at us Brits:-) Being British . . . well . . . how many of us . . . drive a French car to an Irish pub for a German beer. On the way home grab an Indian Curry or a Turkish kebab and return home to sit on a Swedish sofa to watch an American sitcom on a Japenese TV? Just think about it:-) Only in Britain do the banks leave both doors open and then chain pens to the counter!
Only in Britain do the supermarkets sell hot dogs in packs of ten and buns in packs of eight. And what’s more, why oh why, do we Brits feel the need to play football in a river, snorkel through peat bogs and play hearty games of shin-kicking? As well as hold Pea Shooting, Coal Carrying, Liars and even Christmas Pudding Racing Championships? There's no doubt that to the rest of the world, the British seem to have eccentricity flowing through their veins. Yet to the British themselves, apparently bizarre behaviour like racing giant cheeses down a hill, hurling a haggis as far as possible and wrestling each other's toes, are not only great fun . . . but help preserve important local traditions:-) Who said the British were unassuming, quiet and restrained?
British supermarkets make the sick walk to the back of their store to get a prescription but the healthy ones have the fag counter conveniently situated at the front of the store! Only in Britain do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a DIET coke. Only in Britain do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage. Only in Britain do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place. Only in Britain are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink. 20
