welcome to

Southwest Michigan

S

outhwest Michigan is a delightful destination for a getaway on crisp fall days or snowy afternoons. Here you will find quaint little resort towns with gingerbread-trimmed cottages, curious antiques shops, lovely boutiques, romantic bed and breakfast inns, and gourmet restaurants tucked away among the rolling dunes. In autumn, the forested hills resemble a patchwork quilt of reds, golds and yellows; U-pick orchards, wineries, and farmers markets display the fruits (and vegetables!) of the season; and corn mazes and fall festivals promise bushel baskets full of family fun. When the snow flies, so do outdoor enthusiasts - down hills, along trails, and over the ice. There are trails in state, county, and local parks, as well as ski slopes within an hour’s drive of St. Joseph. Southwest Michigan’s web-like snowmobile trail system spreads out in every direction, threading through the dunes and rambling through the woods with adventure waiting around every bend. Cozy cottages, inviting restaurants, and intriguing museums make fall and winter especially memorable in Michigan’s great southwest. For more information, visit www.swmichigan.org, or call (269) 925-6301.

South Haven

estled in southern Michigan’s fruit belt, South Haven is an historic Lake Michigan harbor city that is known as much for its beach town atmosphere as it is for its blueberry farms, orchards, cider mills, and country markets. During autumn, you can enjoy the just-picked goodness of home-grown fruits and vegetables and lip-smacking fresh-pressed cider, and pick from thousands of roly-poly pumpkins resting in farmers fields. And when winter snows blanket the landscape, dust off your skis and skates and rev your engines for yet another season of fun. Enjoy ice-skating at downtown’s covered ice rink pavillion in Dyckman Park, strap on cross-country skis or snowshoes for an invigorating afternoon on the Kal-Haven or Van Buren Trails, or ride a snowmobile across the countryside to Kalamazoo on the 34-mile-long Kal-Haven Trail. In the evening, chase the chill away in cozy Bed and Breakfasts, luxurious inns, convenient motels, or at any one of the town’s inviting cafés or restaurants.

he Lake Effect Everyone Loves . . . is more than just Fenn Valley Vineyards & Wine Cellar’s slogan, it’s the reason they can grow the cold, tender European grape varieties that make fantastic wines. The moderating influence of Lake Michigan on the vineyards allows this southwest Michigan winery to continue to add to it’s already lengthy list of award-winning vintages. At the 2011 Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition in August, it brought home 16 awards, including two Best of Class winners: “Capriccio” a dry red wine, and its 2010 Riesling, a semi-dry white wine, which also won a double gold. It also received gold medals for its 2009 Meritage and 2010 Traminette. On December 3, Fenn Valley will introduce its first wine from the 2011 vintage. Open year-round, Fenn Valley Vineyards & Wine Cellar offers free wine tastings and vineyard and cellar tours. welcome to

G

et your passport to fall and winter fun in Holland! This vibrant community, founded by Dutch immigrants more than 150 years ago, gears up for fall and winter fun with a host of events and activities, including a special 200th birthday celebration for the Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, the founder of Holland, that stretches right into the New Year. Under a canopy of golden leaves that shimmer in the afternoon sun, farmers markets offer the bounty of the season - from apples to pumpkins and cranberries to squash. And as fall color fades to winter white, Holland lights up the season and the streets with its annual Parade of Lights and a full roster of special holiday events. While the countryside may be blanketed in snow, walking and driving in Downtown Holland is a pleasure thanks to its state-of-the-art snowmelt system. The radiant heat that warms the cobblestone sidewalks and streets keeps snow and ice at bay all winter long. And the outdoor gas fireplace on Eighth Street not only warms chilly fingers and noses, it also warms the soul. For more information, visit www.holland.org or call the Holland Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at (800) 506-1299.

Grand Haven & Spring Lake L

ike the petals on a three-leaf clover, the lakeside communities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg are clustered at the mouth of the Grand River, offering visitors three times the fun in every season. And like the colors on the autumn leaves, there are countless ways to enjoy fall, including getting behind the wheel of your car and taking to the open road; settling into a canoe or kayak and paddling the Grand River Heritage Water Trail; hopping on a bike to explore more than 100 miles of trails that run through all three communities; or lacing up sneakers and strolling the 2½-mile-long wooden boardwalk that runs along Grand Haven’s scenic waterfront. Whichever mode you choose, you’re sure to be enchanted by the beauty of the season. When the snow flies and the area sports a coat of new-fallen snow, snap on your skis or snowshoes to explore trails that meander through silent woods and along ice-encrusted lakeshores. Lodging is plentiful and includes bed and breakfast inns, cabin and cottage rentals, and convenient hotels and motels, many of which offer fall and winter specials. You may even want to plan your getaway around one of the area’s seasonal festivals and events, which celebrate everything from salmon to Santa.

Tri-Cities Historical Museum F

rom “Bling to boats and bikes, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum in downtown Grand Haven offers a glimpse into the fascinating history of Northwest Ottawa County. On two floors of the historic 1870 H. C. Akeley Building, the early people and places of the Tri-Cities are featured, while in the upper galleries are the wildly popular “Bling: A History of Costume Jewelry 1920-1970 (extended to August 2012), which features more than a thousand sparkling pieces from a private collection; and In Sickness and In Health, which features a recreated art deco drug store soda fountain, an early 20th century doctor’s office, and a display of the odd and unusual medical instruments of the past. The Tri-Cities Historical Museum of Transportation is located in an 1871 Grand Trunk Railroad depot on the Grand Haven waterfront just two blocks from the Akeley Building. The recently renovated depot houses transportation artifacts, including Great Lakes ships and train models and many locally manufactured items such as a 1921 Apex Truck, a rowboat from the Clinker Boat Manufacturing Company, and a 1961 Bowden Spacelander Bike. Admission to the museum is always free. Visit www.tri-citiesmuseum.org for more information and a calendar of events.

Lemon Creek

WINERY

Lemons produce some of the best grapes in the state!

“Farming is our business, growing grapes our profession, selling good wine our ambition. - Robert Lemon, Sr. (founder of Lemon Creek Winery)

T

he Lemon family and Lemon Creek Fruit Farm have been a part of the landscape in Berrien County for more than a century and a half, producing some of the best grapes in the state. Since the establishment of Lemon Creek Winery in 1984, it has also earned the distinction of being an awardwinning wine producer. One of its most recent successes is its Cabernet Sauvignon Ice Wine, the first of its kind produced in the United States. This unique wine is made with grapes that are frozen while still on the vine and harvested under exacting temperature conditions, which is how Lemon Creek’s Moon Shadow ice wine got its name. The grapes were picked on a bone-chilling evening during an enchanting lunar eclipse. To try this very special ice wine and other exceptional vintages, visit either one of Lemon Creek’s two tasting rooms at the winery in Berrien Springs or the new Grand Haven Tasting Room, which opened in spring of 2011. Both tasting rooms are open year-round. Lemon Creek Winery Farm Market also offers wagon rides to their orchards to pick grapes, apples, and peaches in season. For more information about Lemon Creek’s award-winning wines, special events, and tasting room hours, log on to www.lemoncreekwinery.com, visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lemoncreekwine, or call (616) 844-1709. $).% ). s 4!+%/54

enjamin Franklin once said, “Hide not your talents, they for use were made. What’s a sun-dial in the shade?” And he obviously practiced what he preached. The Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World exhibit at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum presents artifacts related to Franklin’s many inventions, including bifocals, the Franklin stove, the armonica (glass harmonica), and the microscope. As the exhibition reveals, Franklin was so much more than an eccentric scientist prone to flying kites in thunderstorms. He was a founding father, diplomat, humorist, philanthropist, writer, entrepreneur, rebellious teen - and one of the truly remarkable and most influential Americans of any generation. The exhibit runs through January 8, 2012. For more information, visit www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov. FA L L / W I N T E R

xperience the Lake Effect in Muskegon, where autumn seems to linger a little longer and there’s no business like snow business! It’s Muskegon’s lakeside location that creates countless opportunities for outdoor recreation in all seasons, but especially during the fall and winter. Here you can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, as well as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even luging! The same lake effect that ensures abundant snowfall for winter sports enthusiasts also allows golfers to play area links well into October and sometimes November. Another autumn treat is the annual Depot to Depot, Muskegon County Fall Color Tour on October 15. Travel on one of Michigan’s most scenic drives around lakes, over the dunes, and under the colorful canopy of leaves between Muskegon and Whitehall. The holidays in Muskegon create a flurry of events beginning in November with the Holiday Tours at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site. Here you can tour the homes of Muskegon’s most famous lumber barons and experience the holidays as they did in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The nearby Scolnick House depicts the holidays during the Great Depression. For an evening of family fun, you won’t want to miss “Family Christmas in Hackley Park” on November 26. This event kicks off the holiday season with a tree lighting, caroling, and a visit from Santa. For more information about these events and the Muskegon area, visit www.visitmuskegon.org. or call (800) 250-9283.

uperstitions, shipwrecks, and service are featured in upcoming exhibitions and events at the Lakeshore Museum Center in Muskegon. During the month of September, enjoy free tours of the Hackley & Hume Historic Site, which is comprised of two neighboring Queen Anne-style Victorian houses and the massive City Barn, all once owned by lumber barons Charles H. Hackley and Thomas Hume. The homes are filled with lavish wood carvings, stained glass, and furniture from the late 1800s. And on display at the City Barn is the “Unsolved Mysteries: The Shipwreck Thomas Hume” exhibit, which explores the loss of the lumber schooner in Lake Michigan 120 years ago. Scheduled for October 13-14 are the “See the Sites in a Different Light” tours at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site. At the Hackley House, docents explain the symbolism behind the wood carvings in the Hackley House, and at the Hume House across the courtyard, common superstitions and how to avoid their consequences are discussed. Reservations are required for these tours. Lakeshore Museum Center celebrates the holiday season with special tours at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site, the Scolnik House of the Depression Era, and Fire Barn Museum. Decked out in holiday finery, these sites will be open for tours November 25-27, December 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, and 28-29. Hours vary, so please visit www.lakeshoremuseum.org or call (231) 722-0278. On display at the Lakeshore Museum Center is the exhibition, “Serving You for 75 Years,” in recognition of the museum’s upcoming 75th anniversary. This exhibit features some of the earliest artifacts donated to the museum and recognizes the people responsible for the establishment and growth of the museum over the years. Free admission. et the lure of the lake lead you to Ludington this fall, where electrifying color lights up the lakefront and blankets the countryside. A favorite place to view the colorful autumn leaves is in Ludington State Park. More than 21 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the dunes, along the Lake Michigan shore, and through hardwood forests, including a two-mile-long loop that leads to one of the tallest lighthouses on the Great Lakes - Big Sable Point Lighthouse. When the winter snow flies, drifting snowflakes create whimsical ice sculptures on wind-blown beaches and blanket the trails for the pleasure of cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. Nearby Manistee National Forest also offers mile after mile of scenic trails. And when the area’s many inland lakes freeze over, you can fish through the ice for blue gills, perch, walleye, and Northern pike.

welcome to

Benzie County

enzie County has long been known for its unspoiled wilderness and peaceful way of life. Now the entire country knows that Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is “the most beautiful place in America.” Viewers of ABC’s “Good Morning America” chose it over such places as Sedona, Cape Cod, the Grand Tetons, and Hawaii’s Lanikai Beach. The area’s rolling hills and tree-covered dunes provide a dramatic backdrop any time of the year, but it’s especially scenic during autumn. Panoramic overlooks along the famous M-22 roadway provide breathtaking views of a paint palette of color spilling into the crisp blue waters of area lakes. Here, you can enjoy the serenity of the season from a canoe or kayak on the Betsie or Platte Rivers. You can hike or bike the Betsie Valley or FrankfortElberta Beach Trails, which offer mile after mile of unparalleled natural beauty as they roll through the countryside and skirt the edge of towns. Or bring some clubs and make a tee-time for any of the area’s great golf courses. When the first snowflakes of the season fall on Benzie County, zip up your jacket, step into your boots, and pull on your mittens for a whole new season of fun. Downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and tubing are tops at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa, named the #1 Resort in the Midwest by SKI magazine. New for the 2011-12 ski season at Crystal is a new loading conveyor quad chairlift, which is beginner skier friendly! Holiday shopping in the villages of Benzonia, Beulah, Elberta, and Frankfort is like nowhere else if you are looking for unique gifts. he colorful displays in shop windows in downtown Frankfort have some serious competition during autumn. Just steps away on the south side of Main Street are picturesque views of Betsie Lake, marinas, fishing and sailing boats, and fabulous fall color. But the inviting ambiance of the specialty boutiques and galleries lures shoppers in where they can browse decorative items for home or cottage, books, furniture, jewelry, up-scale apparel and sportswear, and original works of art. And when winter snow dusts the treetops and frosts the lighthouses and piers, a stop at one of the local restaurants or pubs will satisfy any appetite and warm fingers and toes!
