prostitutes in the Edo Age
The history of the Japanese red-light district began in the Edo Period. Then the entertainment and amusement business was permitted in public and there were places which created culuture and fashion. In the other words, the red-light distict was one of the symbolic essences of the Edo Period.

The pcture on the upper left shows a costume of a prostitute. That looks is luxurious and facinating. Furthermore, they were wearing dresses which were made of high-quality silk. Sometimes, customers bought expensive dresses for their favorite prostitute as a symbol of friendship. The picture on the upper right side is a building of a redlight district in the Edo Period and barker. In the period, builgings in the red-light district were only allowed to be built a three-story high. The culture of the red-light district had a lot of charms however, the culuture wasn t related because of prejudice about the sex industry.

Location : City of Mukojima
About 50 years ago, red-light districts were existed in every city in Japan. However, in 1956, The Anti-prostitution Law was carried out and almost all red-light districts were dismantled but still few red-light districts survived. The city of Mukojima is one of the most famous ex-red-light districts in Tokyo and there had been thriving in the town of Edo.

Through the visiting, I thought that if I can ďŹ nd key factors of these buildings, there is a good chance of remaking and getting back the liveliness.That s why, I started to search the ex-red-light district.

Now, the ex-red-light district had become a shopping district which has a shabby atmosphere and no liveliness. When I visited that place, I realized that almost all stores were closed down but, the buildings materials and their texture were very interesting for me.

I drew these sketches to grasp the feature of buildings in the ex-red-light district. When I drew these sketches, I felt that these are a lot of materials in the building. Furthermore, we can t ďŹ nd such kinds of buildings in urban cities. On the other hands, the ex-red-light distirct located on the high- crowded residential area because of that, each buildings was built on narrow lots and the volume of buildings were so small. Rooms were cramped. Through the research and drawing, I understood the bad points of this district and I came to think about how I can design comfortable and spacious room in this district. Finally, I focused on the structure and searched on the dismantlement of existing building partial and reconstruction to the new building.

I visited to the ex-red-light district in Mukojima four times, and took these pictures. The pictures above shows how these buildings in the ex-red-district has interesting materials and texture of the buildings. Through the research, I could ďŹ nd wall made of mortar, facade made of cooper sheet and eaves made of ceramic tile in spite that almost all buildings were built of wood. They decorated the the outside to appeal and attract customers. In my opinnion, such movement created individual atomsphere at the site. By these impressions, I thought of how I can treat these characteristics and design a new plan.

Way of Expand The Existing Structurre
The picture above is a trial model image. I tested the way of making new spaces with existing buildings in the narrow district. Through making renderings, I found a key phrase. That is Extension of The Structure It means create new space by extending exisiting pillars, beams and floors. The way of the Extension of The Structure will remain the existing volume and I can add a newspace or rooms naturally.

Analyse the plan of Red-Light District buildings
The drawings above is the common plan of red-light district buildings. In my point of view, these plan arrangements is similar to a modern flat share. Nowadays, a flat share is the vogue among young people in Japan at the same time, the demand of these rooms are increaseing. That s why, I decided to utilize a common point of the existing plan of red-light district buildings and demand of customers. I think that these ex-red-light district buildings will be redesigned as a fascinating apartment house.

I designed 14 buildings as one share apartment because I wanted to create vavariety of space and rooms moreover I believe that various human s activities in the narrow area will lead to get back aliveliness.

Location & Historical Background
After the tunami in 1896 Sendai

Stranded boat in 1896 Sendai
The Tohoku district has been damaged many times throughout history of tunamis, because of the Rias coast. In 1896, There occurred the Sanriku off the east coast earthquake in Tohoku area. That damage was a twenty thousand lives were lost in the earthquake and nine thousand houses were destoryed. Main damege was a tunami, that s why almost all houses were destroyed away by the tunami because of that almost all houses which were made of wood and were carried away and went rotten immediately. The picture at the left side are the buildings were emerged from flood waters. The picture at the right side is a fishing boat which run aground. From hundred years ago, The people had to think on how to build a stronger or durable buildings. However, unfourtunately, it is impossible to find a good solution and a protection plan to date.

The area that was affected by the tsunami is located on the northern part of Japan and it s approximately two hours by the train from Tokyo. The East Coast side of the Tohoku areas have a lot of a fishing village and fishing is the main industry. One of the reasons why they had a big damage in this area is because the fishermans built a village near the shore. In addition, the Rias coast becomes the causes high tsunami.

What can I do for the people in that area
Fourtunately, I ve never experienced unbearable suffering compared to the people in that area. I can t understand their changing of emotion and a sense of loss. Howevere, I can imagine that If I lost my love ones, What will happen. Anyway, When I think about my part as an architecture student, I realized I have to consider what is best for the people in that area what is better city environment and life for these area s people. Probably, Planing a new environment for these people would help them overcome their suffering and give them hope to move on with their lives. Moreover, I should also think about what kind of space, room, construction makes that people relax and happy.

a collapsed gymnasium in 2011 Kamaishi
The ruins shown in the above picture used to use a gymnasium for an elementary school. When I went to the disaster area of Kamaishi city in Tohoku area with my classmate and professor in octorber 2011, I took that picture. I totally couldn't believe the sight in front of me, it was like a set in a movie. According to a villager s story, almost of the school students could not find a refuge away from the tsunami. Tsunamis come without any warning to attack the city with enormous speed, I shuddered with fear. Because of the damage was too big, a revival project was made very difficult even now.

When I went to the disaster area in Tohoku, I took a lot of pictures and saw a suffering at the same time. Furthermore, I felt a damage from tunami and earthquake by not only sight but also smell and sound. When I visited a ruin of kindergarten, I smelled a strange odor that was like a bit sour. I couldn t understand the cause of the smell from the beginnng, but, I realized it was caused by the seawater. The salt in the seawater had caused many of the wood to rotten and decay. In a kindergarten was filled up with seasand. I think If you see that situation, you can suppose that nobody guess there used to be a kindergarten. In the upper right picture was taken at the harbor. As you can see, Because of the great tunami damage, The ground level has been sinking in the habor areas. There were a huge work space for the fhishing industry, but, now, these are under the sea. This is a serious problem and is difficult plan for revaival. These foundation in the upper left picture was taken in the residential area. That district used to has a lot of houses and store, but, almost all structure which made of wood was carried away and remaind the foundation which made of stone or concrete only. I thought that these foundation looks like a grave, marking the houses which were destroyed. Through this research of the disaster site, I was overwhelmed with sadness from what I witnessed, at the same time there grew a passion in me for a revival. I realized that it was an important oppotunity to reconsider my way of thinking of architecture. I have to consider people s emotions and backgrounds of region and ultimately the purpose of architecture and what it serves.

The image of the atmosphere
The drawing below is an image of a situation where everybody is in happiness. For seeking for what kind of space and atomosphere makes people happy, I tried a few drawing about activity of people. After that, I wanted to make a obedient space to people s emotion and activities. It will easy to become attached to atomosphere and that atomosphere can be relieved. Moreover, they need a space where they can talk about their revaival and their future.

I wanted to create a space that supports the people's actitives, as well as comfort their emotions and I also want to create a space that would attract people if forexample someone begins to dance, there can be formed a ring of people around dancer.

A meal together with everbody and cooking tend to make us cheerful. Thorugh these sketchings and drawings, I noticed that when I create a new space for a disaster area, the space of exibility like a human s activity is so important. In my opinion, the limitation of time expresses a transient quality, like a festival. A festival has a many factors which makes pepole excited. I think a temporary structure is one of the interasting device of festivals. That s why, I studeied several pattern of temporary structures.

Considering a structure
Through the process2, I realized that it is difficult to get into the habit of that structure. Furthermore, I couldn t find a difference of a typical festival and my proposal. That why I thought that a temporary structure will not be new suggestion for disaster area s people. Throught the trial and error, I reached another proposal and a new way of thinking and came up with shelves structure . This structure is composed by walls which has many shelves. These shelves would create a new opportunity to share each one s belongings and possessions in this house for everyone. And later, the communication between people will enhance.

Final Concept
Drawing of a making together
Through the process, I came to think stronger about making something together or the cooperate of many people could give live a rich lifestyle. It is for that purpose that I decided that my ďŹ nal proposal is a house which in made by not only the designer and the carpenter but also the future residents who use that building in the future. I believe that cooperation between the designer and the user will make amazing results.

A way of making Space (Collage)
The drawing at above is a part of my conceptual image. The drawing is written many type of parts of the house. These parts (texture, material) will get together by the people who use that house after the completion. I wonder if these parts of the house are one s possession, the house will have a lot of memories for people. The space which surrounded by the memento of the people in that area will have the originality that non-others can imitate. Besides, that space would be used preciously. This concept allows for the future residents to participate in the construction process. That is why I have decided to design the basic structure (which is made mainly of wood) and have left the ďŹ nal touches of construction to be completed by the future residents themselves. In other words, they can gather their posessions of memento previously used such as their furniture, and even window frames or doors. Because of the attack of the earthquake and the tunami, almost all houses were dismantled into parts. andso there are many parts of building materials lying around there. That s why, In my proposal I want to have a oppourtunity to use such parts.

Conclusion of My Project
The concept of my ďŹ nal proposal is based on the collage of the mementos of the victim's. That's why after my design of the basic structure, the future residents are entrusted for completion. It is my hope that this "Home For All" will serve as a home for peace and relaxation.

The studio inside is 7.5 x 4.4 meters, in total expanding 31.5 square meters. The collage done by the residents can create a space ďŹ lled with an atmosphere of variety with their own selected materials. Moreover, this house open up the possibility of a replacement of the old with the new.

Reconsideration of Japanese Garden

Stone Garden The Ryoan-ji Kyoto
The big characteristic of the Japanese garden is "an asymmetrical arrangement and molding by the curves". These are completely dierent of a Westernstyle garden. Because, the Japanese garden mogeling a scenery of nature and a plant even the religious ideas. Originally a square pond was made as a part of an element of the garden when landscape gardening culture entered to Japan from China. However, it came to make a curved pond gradually, afterthat the geometric pond and garden became an uncommon type. Moreover, a Japanese garden expresses an admiration for natural environment. We always impressed by that power of expressions and seek for a peaceful mind through the beautiful japanese garden.

When I was a ďŹ rst-year in my university, I visted a back alley in Kyoto twice. The back alley in the upper picture is typical examples. In my opinion, These back alley that is based on cityscape of Kyoto makes us excited because of a maze of ways. Sometimes, a maze of ways or streets give us surprise and an encounter. I thought that an atomosphere of space and composition promotes changing of emotions. What I mean, A change in one s circumstances lets hold a new feelings. So When I went there, I felt a possibility of a composition of a back alley. I realized that the back alley is a one of the traditional space in Japan. After that, I came to think about coexistence between the japanese landscape garden and the traditional back alley in Kyoto.

Studing a model
Through the trip to Kyoto and research for a back alley, I realized that the space that seems to a maze give us a big surprise. That s why, I was studying about space which create some surprise. The Charm of Ceramic Art
Through four years as a university student, I looked around the ceramic-producing factory and I found out how complicated the process is from the begining to the completion. Visiting ceramic art studio is always a good experience for me. However, I realised that many people don t know anything about how ceramic art is made. That s why it is necessary to know about what constitutes good tableware. Ceramic art is beautiful and the more you know about it, the more enjoyable dinner can be.

Exhibition Space & Sunlight
I believe that almost all art is created by light. The light makes the shadows and the colours. When we feel something is beautiful, the light provides an important key element, because it is an essential factor in feeling atmosphere and mood. I think that a collaboration between art and sunlight will give you a spatial impression that you have never felt before.

Tokyo Yoyogi Park
Yoyogi Park used to house a training school for The Japan Imperial Army. After World War II, it became a facility for the U.S. forces, called the Washington apartment house. In 1964, This park used as the Yoyogi Olympic village at the Tokyo Olympics. After the Tokyo Olympics, it was redesigned again and was opened as Yoyogi Park in 1967. The area of this park is 54.1 ha, This is the fourth largest park in Tokyo. I think, Building a new museum in this park would create a wonderful experience and new sense of value because of the collaboration between art and nature.

I studied some structures and considered what kind of roof structure would let through a lot of sunlight. Finally, I decided on pattern f because, that structure is stronger than the checked pattern (a,b,c) and it is easier to connect the beams to pillars. Image of The Outside
Through the process of this project, I focused on permeability and brightness, because the connection between sunlight and art was an important theme of this project. At the same time, I had a longing for transparent building like a Crystal Palace. Further more, I also kept in mind how I can eliminate waste. To make a beautiful space, I deleted the architectural waste, by looking at the rationality for each structure in the building such as the beams, the pillars, and so on. In my opinion, such ideas give this building an airy impression.

SHOTARO OSHIMA
Shotaro Oshima, originally hailing from Tokyo. Shotaro attended Tama Art University where he got his Bachelor Degree in Architecture in 2013. After the graduation, he relocated to Glasgow to do Diploma (part2) and Master in Architecture at Glasgow School of Art. He dedicates himself to creating delicate and phenomenal spatial experiences with Japanese sophistication. His project ranginf from photograph to urban planing but each project focusing on subtle changes within daily events.
