Location & Historical Background
After the great Kanto Eartquake Tokyo (left side) a signboard architecture Tokyo (right side)
In 1923, There occurred the Great Kanto Earthquake in Tokyo. That damage was terrible, a onehundred fourty thousand lives were lost in the earthquake and twohundred thousand building were destroyed. Main cause was a fire, because of that all most all houses which made of wood were burned immediately. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, it was necessary to cover the outside of the building with non-flammable materials (mortar, copper sheet) to improve fireproof characteristics. In addition, the intention to a Western-style design became stronger between the common people layer. Such conditions made a lot of Western-style buildings and was popularized during process of the revival. Specially, the buildings at the upper right of the picture is a typical shape and material. The typical buildings finished the facade in mortar and a copper sheet as a decoration. There were many trial to make a free design with the flat wall such as the signboard. That why These type of buildings was so called a signboard architecture . These buidings has different facades from other sides of buildings. For example, basic construction is made of wood, Howevere, facede looks like a made of stone or red bricks. In short, these type of buildings were made for just appeal and advertisement. These buildings were one of the big movement in the history of Japanese architecture. Howevere, now, signboard architecture were demonished gradually. Therefor I thought that remains of signboard architecture for convey history and material at that time and It will be a great opportunity to know the resident of that city about a singboard architecutre . For this reason, I decided to plan a renovation for signboard architecture.

A Encounter at Shibuya
1980s Shibuya
a signboard architecture and Dougenzaka Street 1930s Shibuya
a map of Shibuya city
2012s Shibuya
When I walked at Shibuya, I met the building accidentally. It seemed that the building lookd small and delicate, Because, that building was surrounded by the skyscraper. The building was built in the 1930s serving as a store and a residence. That building s atomosphere was nostalgic and It is an atmosphere good but older than other buildings. This a signboard architecture was used as a house and the stores until approximately 30 years ago, but nobody used this building afterthat. The site is located in the middle of the slope and it takes 10min from Shibuya station on foot. When I saw that builging, I decided that I will treat that building as a subject of my renovation project.

Observation & Findings Plan for Dougenzaka Architectual School
It is an explanatory diagram of the signboard architecture approximately 50 years ago and I could get it at a ward office. According to these drawing, after the completion that building was enlarged and rebuild in several times for 80 years.
I visited this signboard architecture several times and began an investigation. This building was not shown and opened, that s why I had to imagine internal space from the appearance. It was a problem that to be hard to notice of the facade of this building. Besacuse, a width of the sidewalk in front of this building was so narrow. This building has the interesting plan that six roofs hang over three divided buildings. Therefore, Each buildings has totally different material and texture. Moreover, Each building has different the heights of floors and the heights of the window, because of the sloping land.
The buidings were covered with protection net for prevention of the decoration such as a tile or a copper sheet, because of deterioration of the outer wall. Each building was planned freely when I looked at the back of these buildings, and these situation is interesting. In addition, there was vacant land of this area where was about the as same as size that building on the back. Therefore, I felt posibility of addition to a new buildings, when I go forward to a renovation. I thought that it was very interesting that the wooden building which was built 80 years ago survived in Shibuya of the modern city. This building is built in the place such as the bottom of the valley among skyscraper, and so if I couldn t consider about lighting, the inside will remain dark atomosphere.

My imagination of the atomosphere
The drawing at the top of this page is a imag my project after renovetion. After the reconstruction, interior of this building will fill up with light and happiness. In addition, this building will be known as a traditional signboard architecture in Shibuya, and convey the old feel of material on this building and people who live in Shibuya s memory. I hope that the city of Shibuya can coexist the tradition of this building and the new trend.

The School building Through my four-years in my studies at Tama Art University, I came to think about what is comfortable studing space for student and especially, for architecture student. I know this because, I have studeid Architecture for four-years. In my opinion, student who create architecture tend to get influence from a characteristic of space and appealing material. If your school building has fascinating space and a lot of material and structure, you will get new inspiration from that building. That is an amazing opportunity to improve your skills and power of expression. That s why, I decided to build an architectual vocational school that educate a new sense of value and bringing up students who have new way of thinking .Dougenzaka Architecture School (DAS) students can spend a rich shool life besause, there are beautiful light and spacious room, and a lot of material. When I thought about the school building, a few problems flashed across my mind. 1 Now, almost all classroom space are made for a homogeneous building type. 2 Who can make the plan of the window when you can see beautiful setting sun, in a homogeneous light of a fluorescent light? 3 Almost all the school environment is shut on a fence from a city or a town. I would like to design a place where you can have a good opportunity to meet a students and other people, what I mean, shool environment will need more opened space and classrooms with beautiful light.

I will leave the existing volume and create a new space and function. After that, I will give them a new lease on life. And I was thinking about what kind of structure will give us outstanding light. I was also thinking about the importance of the intermediate areas linking the inside and outside of buildings.

This picture on the upper right is a work space with skylight. Space with the light of the sun produces new ideas from the students. This picture on the upper left side is a studio and workshop building. The space was surrounded by the sunlight from a skylight. The most appealing feature of this building is the smooth connection of the spaces and clear view -- from the Imformation Desk to the Studio.

Second assignment of third-year in Tama Art University
The House for poets of an aphasia The Relation between space and a sentence
Second assignment of third-year in Tama Art University
Conseption & Observation The Relation between space and a sentence
1
An Encounter with The Book
When I studied the connection with space and the sentence, I encountered The Poetics of Space and I was impressed by a lot of beautiful phrases. In my impression, beautiful phrases like poetry can help you imagine the broad expanse of sapce. Sometimes we can feel a wind, sunlight or a fragrance in our minds. Through reading this book, I realized that beautiful phrases can act as a base concept for the building.
2
How Can I conect Space with Sentence
The graph above shows an image of the transition from a poetical phrase to the space. Firstly, I make poetry as a basic image for this house. Secondly, From that image, I draw the drawing of the space, room and furniture. After that, I combine these element of space or room and make a completed plan. Finaly, The poets of an aphasia who live in this house write a poetry in this house. At the same time, That poetry will be returned to the ďŹ rst poetry. That cycle will create the connection with the poetry and space.

The poetry of The House
1
The poetry which witten in Japanese is the basic poetry of the house. The structure of these poetry is like a diary of the daily life in the house.
Through reading poetry, i realised that window is an important factor to make an atmosphere and poetic mood because, window is a significant device to connect inside and outside. Comfortable window allow you to be lost in thought. That s why I decided to treat beautiful windows as a essential element of making poetic space.

General Introduction & Historical Background The Proposal for the Tomioka Station Design Competition
1
History of The Town of Tomioka
Tomioka Silk Factory, built in 1872, was the first silk mill in Japan. The publicly owned brick building was designed by Paul Brunat, a French engineer. On a side note, the Tomioka Silk Factory is studied by most Japanese students studying Japanese history, so it is well known. Tomioka Silk Mill was the first model machine silk-reeling mill built by the Meiji government. It was a pioneer in the modernization of Japanese industry and contributed very significantly to the improvement of the silk industry. After its privatization, it changed hands several times. However, the buildings and the equipment, which were designed specifically for filature (silk-reeling) have been carefully conserved as an important cultural property after the mill complex was closed. Amongst the factories built and run directly by the Meiji government, Tomioka Silk Mill is the only still remaining in almost perfect condition. The women workers who learned their skills then taught at a number of other silk-reeling mills across Japan which were built on the model of Tomioka Silk Mill, and which led to the spread of the technique of machine silk-reeling throughout the country. This not only improved the Japanese silk industry, but also, through the export of raw silk, internationally popularized silk. Tomioka Silk Mill is a very important heritage asset with social, economic, industrial and architectural significance. The right side photographic image was published before December 31st 1956, or photographed before 1946 and not published for 10 years thereafter, under jurisdiction of the Government of Japan.
2
Structure of The Tomioka Silk Mill
The main original buildings are designed by the timber-framed, brick construction. The buildings were constructed using European and Japanese traditions. Walls were built of locally produced bricks, manufactured using a technique introduced from Europe, and the buildings were roofed with traditional Kawara tiles.
3
Location & A building Site
The city of Tomioka located in the Kanto Area. It takes two hours by the train from Tokyo. The pictures above is the existing Tomioka Station. The staionis located on a suburb area, and so the atomsphere is a little shabby.

Concept & Process The Proposal for the Tomioka Station Design Competition
1
Make a Connection with The Tomioka Silk Mill and The Station
a
From the Resarch for the city of Tomioka, I realized that the brick was essential factor of the history of Tomioka. Therefore, I throught that the brick is the best material for the new station building and this idea will continue Tomioka s cultural and historical legacies.
b
The second point is the theme of the station building. When I was thinking about concept, I realized that sewing is beautiful key word and this idea will create an interesting composition of that building.
c
Through the process b, A new idea ashed into my mind. That is a line of slow curve like when you make a loop with a string. I throught that such loose curve is a symbolic design of sewing. That s why, I began to study loose curve structure.

Structure of The New Tomioka Station
The pictures above is a study for a knot of string as a structure. For various human activities, I selected the shape which has more free space.

The Plot Plan
The most appealing feature of this building is the connection with the concept of structure and the human activities. A watting room which is located in the center of this station building is a part of the knot in a string. There will be condensed space in this area.

Foundation ( Concrete)
In this proposal of the structure, I focused on a compression ratio of the brick. It is the same as concrete. I designed the thin brick wall by the tension of the steel stick (23φ). It like a sandwich the bricks between the steel frame and concrete.

Structure Analysis
The pictures above shows the power of compression and the power of a pull. The green diagram shows the stable structure in the picture on the upper right.
