Community The Creek Boutique continues giving year-round

S

ometimes a place calls out to you. You can’t get it out of your mind and you have to return. Owners of The Creek Boutique, Wes and Laura Ann Wagner’s love for the Kerr County area began when daughter Lauren attended Camp Waldemar in 2002. When camp ended, the Wagners drove from Kerrville to Hunt along Highway 27 to pick up their daughter and Laura Ann spotted a building that she thought would make the perfect shop.

Little Ogden Wagner and Tye Medran sporting their new Nativa shirts.

Fast-forward to 2012. Driving through Ingram one day, Laura Ann noticed a For Sale sign on the door of that very same building at 3272 Junction Highway and stopped to snap a picture of it. She took the photo back to the family’s home in Midland and posted it on the fridge, where it stayed until the Wagners moved to Ingram with their children Russell, Travis, and Lauren the following year. While their new home on Johnson Creek was under construction and Wes was busy with their ranch, Laura Ann felt an urge to do something. “The photo of 3272 Junction Highway kept tugging at me,” she remembers. In December 2013, the Wagners went to see the property––it was love at first sight. Five months later, the shop Laura Ann had imagined would be perfect in that spot opened its doors. Her vision for The Creek Boutique had become a reality.

A new adventure unfolds

Laura Ann started going to market with her mother, Joyce McMakin, in 1987, where they bought gifts for her brother Doug McMakin’s pharmacy in Beaumont. Then, after marrying Wes, she helped her mother-in-law, Johnna Curle, buy inventory for her gift shop The Canopy in Midland. “Going to market and buying was the only hobby that I stuck with all those years,” Laura Ann says. “It felt natural to open my own shop.” She quickly began stocking The Creek Boutique with brands she’d loved and purchased for The Canopy. One line she’d been buying for thirty years, Jan Barboglio accessories, topped her list––”they have a Hill Country look and feel,” Laura Ann points out. Juliska’s artisanal stoneware and mouthblown glass tableware and dinnerware also made the list as did handcrafted Italian ceramics from Vietri. continue to next page KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE | NOV-DEC 2019 | 11

Almost since its inception, 2014 Tivy graduate Adrian Medran has been The Creek’s manager. Adrian and his wife Colby live in Kerrville along with their son Tye. While Adrian manages The Creek, Colby fills her days in the physical therapy department at Peterson Regional Medical Center. “Recently Adrian and I went to a Colorado expo specializing in the newest outdoor products and found a lot of interesting things that we hadn’t seen before,” Laura Ann says. “You don’t see them at the other markets in Dallas, New York, or Atlanta because they’re specific to the outdoors.” Nancy Kelly, a Creek fan from Houston, shares, “I discovered The Creek when it first opened and immediately fell in love with it. Laura Ann has something for everyone, at all price points. I even buy all my presents for my Houston friends there; I could buy it all in Houston but I’d have to go to fifteen places to do so. Once I forgot my pajamas, so I ran to The Creek to pick up a pair. And Laura Ann and Adrian are such friendly people, too!” Kids aren’t left out either. The Creek has toys and stuffed animals, plus games for those dark winter nights. And you’ll find popular clothing lines for babies, including Magnetic Me and Milkbarn. Christmas is just around the corner and The Creek offers a nice assortment of Christopher Radko’s Christmas tree ornaments––world-renowned for their beauty, craftsmanship, and collectability. Each Christopher Radko ornament is made by hand and the process takes a week to craft in Radko’s three factories based in Poland, Germany and Italy. “You’ll find everything from luxury items to gag gifts at The Creek,” Laura Ann promises.

New York designer Michael Aram’s handcrafted luxuries––picture frames, flatware, and much more––also adorn The Creek’s shelves. When he debuted his new jewelry collection, The Creek was one of the first Texas gift shops to feature it. Laura Ann’s shop also carries Nativa, the San Antonio-based company that specializes in handmade items crafted by artisans from all over Mexico. Recently, The Creek added the ever-popular line of Consuela handbags for women who want to really make a statement with vibrant colors and patterns. Shopping for men is a little more challenging, Laura Ann admits. “I try to find things my husband and sons like––and I’ve discovered other men like them too.” Among those popular lines are Jack Black men’s spa products, Smathers & Branson’s high-quality, handstitched needlepoint belts and accessories, and of course Yeti. Milkbarn for the little ones.

Supporting community and giving back “We feel fortunate to live here and believe it’s important to support our community,” Laura Ann says. “We sponsor the Hill Country Arts Foundation, The Texas Arts & Crafts Fair, the Ingram Street Dance, the Easter parade, Christmas parade, and many other events. “What we feel most strongly about is our school. I believe the best gift you can give a child that no one can take away, is an education, which is why we support our local school. The teachers and all the other staff members help to mold a child and we feel it’s very important to support that.”

“You’ll find everything from luxury items to gag gifts,” Laura Ann promises.

The Creek supplies T-shirts for the first day of school, as well as for the track team. Throughout the year, Wes and Laura Ann make many other contributions to the school and its students too. Ingram teacher-coach Chris Morales adds, “They give, and they give generously. Their kids are grown, but they treat all ours as if they’re their own. But it doesn’t stop with the kids––every teacher, bus driver, lunchroom aide, custodian––all are recipients of Wes and Laura Ann’s generosity and thoughtfulness. It’s such a blessing for the school that they are able and choose to be so generous.” 14 | NOV-DEC 2019 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

“Wes and Laura Ann Wagner

It’s rare to find people so committed to helping others.” Mayor Brandon Rowan Ingram Texas Jack Black personal care products with Smathers & Branson hand-stitched needlepoint accessories. Folks stop in at The Creek for more than shopping. Many times it’s to chit-chat and get the scoop on what’s going on in the community. Adrian says, “We’re the hidden gem––in plain sight––in Ingram. The other day a new customer stopped in and said, ‘Wow. Doesn’t look like this on the outside.’” Cocoa and Paris, the best-behaved dogs ever, have been coming to work at The Creek since they were eight weeks old and have a following of their own. Adrian and Laura Ann invite you to stop, say hello, shop, or just visit. Or if you just want to say hi to Paris and Cocoa and see what’s up with them, that’s okay too. The gut-brain connection by Sabrina Griggs, RPH

The gut and the brain are closely interconnected by the cardiovascular system. The gut actually sends 400 times more messages to the brain than the brain sends to the rest of the body. The small intestine wall is only a single cell thick, making it possible for nutrients to pass from the gut into the bloodstream, where they are then transported to the brain and other organs. But a condition called “leaky gut” allows harmful bacteria and toxins to pass through the same pathway and create havoc. Leaky gut can lead to food allergies and intolerance, immune system abnormalities, autoimmunity, and negative influence in the blood-brain barrier, and neuroautoimmunity. Excessive consumption of sugar and other high calorie sweeteners, gluten (wheat), stress, use of NSAIDs such as aspirin or ibuprofen, and environmental toxins can all contribute to leaky gut. Food additives known as emulsifiers also drive intestinal inflammation. Conditions such as IBS can affect brain structure due to gut microbiota and chemicals infiltrating brain tissue. Gut bacteria even affect mood and behavior. A healthy intestinal barrier is essential to the effectiveness of probiotics, the beneficial bacteria in the digestive system.

Healing leaky gut is a multi-step process that begins with a diet free of gluten, processed foods, sugar, dairy products, nicotine, and artificial sweeteners. Increased exercise and decreased stress are part of this “reset” phase. A number of supplements can be added to remove toxicties from the diet. Insufficient dietary enzymes must be replaced. Then regeneration of the intestine can begin with the addition of glutamine, omega 3, alpha lipoic acid, and other supplements. At this point probiotics should be replenished and prebiotics added to feed the gut flora. Probiotics are available as a dietary supplement and need to be replenished on a regular basis. Prebiotics can be found in many vegetables including asparagus, cabbage, onions, lentils, and others. At the Apothecary Shoppe, we can provide more information and premium quality products to assist you in regaining gut health.

Sabrina Griggs, RPH, has thirty years of broad-spectrum pharmaceutical and nutritional healthcare knowledge. She is the owner/pharmacist at Apothecary Shoppe, 1228 Bandera Hwy, Kerrville. 830-257-0732.

ARTS A N D EN TER T A I N M E N T

Spatial Images & Emotional Expressions artistic offerings with organic origins

N

Xanthis Barthel

ineteenth Century playwright and poet Oscar Wilde wrote in an essay, “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” He continued, “…the selfconscious aim of Life is to find expression, and Art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realise that energy.”

18| NOV-DEC 2019 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

You’ll find that energy at the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center (KACC) exhibition Spatial Images and Emotional Expressions, January 9 – February 16. The show features Hill Country artists Hardy Clark Lewis and Xanthis Barthel, each in their imaginative diversity of works providing life ample opportunity to imitate art.

“My family’s Hill Country ranch taught me aspects of being both a country boy as well as a city kid,” says Hardy. “It really did help me develop into a person understanding both lifestyles.” Hardy always has kept an eye open to his surroundings, observing and interpreting his collective experiences for future art forms. Additional inspiration also comes through some of his personal experiences—in part embracing his heritage and understanding of the American Indian beliefs. His early art appeared in an exhibit at the San Antonio Institute of Texan Cultures.

Hardy Lewis

Now a retired cattle rancher of forty years and after time spent in industrial construction work, teaching, earning his Art Education degree, and a stint in the Navy, Hardy finds more time to fully invest himself in his art.

Understandably, Hardy does not have just one style of painting and enjoys working in different mediums and methods. In 2017, he brought his creations to KACC for a one-man show, Trees: An Artistic View.

Spatial Images & Emotional Expressions

Hardy continues, “This year at KACC I’m offering something entirely different—an interpretative presentation of spatial images and emotional expressions. Besides my paintings and sculptures and interesting lighting effects, I’m pleased to introduce young artist Xanthis Barthel and her unique jewelry.”

January 9 - February 16, 2020

Eighteen-year-old Geneva School of Boerne graduate Xanthis brings her own distinctive style to the show. She carries with her a lifelong love of drawing and painting and the dream to become an artist.

RECEPTION: Saturday, January 11, 2 - 4 p.m.

“About three years ago, I started making jewelry out of animal bones I had collected on the land where I lived,” says Xanthis. “I drew my inspiration from the beauty and complexity of nature. At first I made jewelry only for myself but as time went on I became more invested in my work.”

Costume Contest Judging at 3 p.m.

After receiving frequent compliments on her wearable art, Xanthis began her business—Beautiful Again. For her jewelry pieces she uses bones that people often see as unappealing and she endeavors to turn them into something beautiful.

228 Earl Garrett St., Kerrville, TX

Xanthis adds, “We shouldn’t run from all the things that scare us—death is a very scary subject that most people try to avoid. I’ve always had an appreciation for nature, even the spooky bits.” You can find jewelry by Xanthis at Kerrville’s The Fairy Moon Emporium and Austin’s The Glass Coffin. In addition to her embellished bone jewelry, she also creates jewelry people. Don’t miss this large KAAC showing of innovative, thoughtprovoking art. Hardy and Xanthis invite you to attend the reception on January 11, 2-4 p.m.—in costume! A contest hosted by the artists will offer first through third place prizes for both adults and children under twelve who dress as “a spatial image or emotional expression.” Refreshments will be served. See side bar for details. You may contact Xanthis and Hardy through Facebook—Hardy Lewis-Fine Art.

BACKY A R D BI R D I N G

Transition Time

Why CPL? by Kevin & Linda Pillow

As the Hill Country moves through fall into winter,

bird activity changes. You may be experiencing a slowdown at your feeders, which is the normal cycle. During autumn birds are busy doing what they’re supposed to do—clearing our fields of seeds and caching them for winter. The slower activity at your feeders will begin to change once the natural food supply is depleted and temps begin to drop, generally around mid-December. The only time in recent years this scenario did not play out, was the year of the drought. Since there was no natural food supply, the birds never slowed down at the feeders. When bird activity is slow, you can reduce the number of feeders and the amount of food; half the usual amount is fine. The caveat is, keep an eye on the food. We tend to not pay as much attention when the birds are slow, but that food can get moldy or go stale and that will drive them away. Birds enjoy a reliable food source, so keeping food in your feeders during slow periods will result in their continuing to visit your yard throughout the year. You should notice a pick up at the feeders around Thanksgiving. Most of our winter migrants show up by mid-December and bird activity should be ramping up. With colder nights and lower food supply the birds will be relying on us to help them. During the cold months we want to supplement with high-fat foods such as suet and seeds. Even though we don’t get as cold as Minnesota, the birds still need high-fat foods for essential energy to endure extended hours of darkness. Adjusting your feeding to suit their behavior not only makes you seasonally savvy, but you will enjoy more birds all season long.

Everybody needs a Pal at home or away! Did you know the last census shows that 29% of Kerr County residents live alone—and 53% of those folks are age 65 or older? It’s great that many of our seniors live independently—but what happens if they should fall, become ill or need assistance? The Dietert Center’s PAL is here to help, 24/7. Our PAL—Personal Alert Link—emergency response systems provide peace of mind for anyone living alone. The home systems consist of a small, water-proof help-button that is worn around the neck or wrist or ask about our duel units for couples. A press of the button summons an operator—any time of the day or night—who determines what assistance is needed. There’s also a home system whose button automatically activates when a fall has occurred. We also offer the PAL MobileCare which works anywhere there is cell phone service. This wearable PAL allows the user to speak directly into the device to talk with the operator, wherever

they may need help, even if away from home or traveling. The PAL MobileCare automatically activates if a fall is detected and locates the user via GPS technology. Unlike other emergency response systems that you order online, our friendly Dietert staff will install the PAL of your choice and show you how to use it, plus provide on-going service and support. There’s no equipment to buy or long-term contracts. Dietert has installed more than 350 PALS throughout Kerr and surrounding counties. Call us at (830) 792-4044 and ensure your peace of mind today! Brenda Thompson is the Dietert Center’s Executive Director. Contact her at 830-792-4044, ext. 247, or visit the Center’s website: DietertCenter.org. The Dietert Center is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization located at 451 Guadalupe Street in Kerrville.

Don’t Let the Holidays Jangle your Bells choose Reiki, the natural stress reliever Even if we enjoy decorating, cooking, gift shopping, family gatherings, and parties—doing them all within a twomonth period at the end of the year can be exhausting and leave us particularly vulnerable during flu season. This year you can choose to participate differently in the festive holidays—with Reiki, a natural healing therapy that promotes physical and emotional balance through relaxation. Disease and discomfort too often become the byproducts of our fatigue and stress. Reiki is a hands-on, integrative therapy that can help break that cycle. Support your wellness the natural way. Contact Anne Schneider, a Kerrville Reiki Master with thirteen years experience. She is a member of The Reiki Alliance—an international organization of traditional Reiki Masters. Schedule your appointment today at her Ventana Al Cielo Studio.
