The making of a business It all started in 1951, when Clyde T. Hester and his wife Lois discovered a broken venetian blind in their home. It needed repair and no one in Kerrville could help. After analyzing the problem and buying the supplies, Clyde easily fixed his blind. Then came his “Ah Ha!” light-bulb moment—“Honey, this is going to make a business!” he exclaimed to Lois. “There are blinds all over this town and nobody here to fix them.” History doesn’t record Lois’ reaction, but clearly Clyde was onto something. Clyde and Lois soon borrowed $1,000 and found a vacant building at 832 Sidney Baker Street to open their Hester Venetian Blind Company— simply offering new venetian blinds and blind repair.
Kerrville Daily Times, November 24, 1963
1951-1976
Over the next twenty-five years the location moved four times. Each year saw the addition of new products such as window awnings and patio coverings. In 1955, a complete line of draperies and woven wood blinds joined the line-up. As Kerrville grew with new housing developments and expanding businesses, Hester's kept growing and responding to its customer’s desire for the latest ideas in interior and exterior design.
1965
The name changed to Hester Window Coverings to better describe all the company offered—so much more than venetian blinds.
1971
Ron Schupp became a partner and in 1976, they added their own workroom to fabricate draperies onsite.
1 9 7 7- 1 9 9 0
In 1976, Clyde Hester decided to retire; Ron and Gloria Schupp took over the business as sole owners. Business expanded as they added items made of aluminum and accepted custom orders including window screens, storm windows, and doors. Hester’s became known for their custom-fitted window products and in-house production. In 1981, the business moved to a new and larger facility at 412 Quinlan—its current location.
1 9 9 0 - 2 0 1 5 Under the new ownership of Robert Clements, he continued its dedication to providing the latest in custom window treatments, inside and out of the home or office. As designs and products changed so did Hester’s inventory. Hester’s remains the Hill Country’s premier source for high quality and affordably priced custom window treatments.
Kerrville Daily Times, June 22, 1951
2015-2020
New owners Mike and Kim Russ focused on outdoor living. In addition to Hester’s already excellent products and services, they offered sheltering windscreens and patio enclosures to filter morning and afternoon sun. Mike added smart-home technology, enabling home and business owners to custom control window coverings and screens through their motorized applications, even from a long distance.
2 0 2 0 Amber Newberry utilizes the accumulated wisdom, experience, knowledge, and growth of the company from its past seventy years to continue the Hester Window Coverings tradition. Amber says, “My greatest ambition is to continue our reputation for superior customer service in every aspect of the business, from design to installation and maintenance. This business will be a legacy to my children.” continue to next page

What's timeless and what's new?
Much changed in the custom window covering business from 1951 to 2021. At the time of venetian blinds’ first popular days, most homes featured very few small windows per room. The home building emphasis then wasn’t particularly on the view from the windows. Keeping out sunlight and privacy from neighbors were the main homeowner concerns. As more folks moved into town and then out into the countryside, they desired bigger views, bigger windows, and fancier window treatments. New homes reflected that trend. Today, in new home construction and even renovation, it’s all about light and space—and lots of it. To manage all that light, indoors and out, you now can enjoy custom-made solar screens for any size and shape window. More new products include motorized patio sun and bug screens and motorized shades you can operate even when you’re not at home. “We specialize in awnings and canopies in both metal and canvas,” states Amber. “And we still offer our built-in-shop window screens in several materials plus our screen and blind repair service. We take pride in assuring customers of our measurements’ accuracy for any product we sell and install.” Amber continues, “Replacing old, drafty single pane and aluminum windows with our energy efficient Low-E double pane windows is a smart choice. We have many styles to choose from and can explain the whole process when you visit our showroom.”

Don't do it yourself Sometimes we watch too many fixer-upper TV shows and think we can do the work ourselves. The end result just doesn’t look like what we imagined. “That’s why we invite you to come to us in the beginning of your project,” says Amber, “so our trained professionals can help guide you through all the choices to ensure your absolute satisfaction. We want you to say, ‘Oh wow this is great!’ not ‘I wish I had done something different.’ “We offer free consultations that can begin in our showroom, in your home, or at your business. Wherever we meet, you receive our undivided attention as we discover what you want to achieve. Whether you have your own vision or want our artistic input, we strive to take the stress out of choosing your custom designs. “We help you select the window treatments that meet your needs for privacy, light control, energy efficiency, heat reduction, and child safety. We then assist you to choose colors, textures, and finishes that beautifully complement your interior décor. Our professional installation ensures the results are completely satisfying.” continue to next page

LIF E STY LE
by Skye Alexander
Cleanup the “Out with the old . . .” This New Year’s slogan is a good one to keep in mind when tackling clutter in your home. Most of us realize we have too much stuff, but acquiring things is often easier than getting rid of them. Once clutter gains a foothold in your home, it tends to spread like kudzu, rapidly taking over your living space until, pretty soon, the process of eliminating it seems overwhelming. Clearing clutter in your home is like weeding a garden so the flowers have room to thrive. If your dining table is littered with newspapers, magazines, and junk mail, you won’t be able to enjoy an attractive centerpiece. Piles of clothing draped over a Victorian boudoir chair will completely obscure its graceful lines. Clutter also makes it harder to keep your home clean—you have to shuffle mounds of stuff around in order to dust, vacuum, or wipe down a countertop. Disorder and dirt continue to build on one another and the cycle keeps expanding until housekeeping becomes an insurmountable task.
18 | JAN-FEB 2021 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE
clutter cleanup the mind Deciding what to save and what to toss is a personal matter, and each of us will make different choices. In my opinion, the advice of English designer William Morris provides wonderful guidelines for paring down clutter: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
Clutter clearing styles
clothes, toys, tools, etc. can add to your own clutter. Make a point of returning things you’ve borrowed as soon as you finish using them.
Gather up reading material
Newspapers, magazines, and other reading materials scattered about can really make your home look messy. Recycle or toss those you’ve finished reading and shelve the rest. If you don’t have time to sort through them immediately, collect them in a basket or box until you can organize them properly.
There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to clear clutter from your home. Some people prefer to dive right into the deep water, so to speak, and start with a heavy-clutter area such as a basement or attic. They blaze “Clutter is through the accumulation as if they were the physical hacking through a jungle with a machete. One of the satisfactions of this “take no prisoners” manifestation style is that it allows you to see dramatic of unmade results at the end of the day. Other folks are more comfortable wading in slowly—say, decisions fueled by organizing a spice rack or medicine cabinet— procrastination.” gradually working up to the really big jobs.
Christina Scalise
An approach that works for many people is to start in the room where you spend the most time. Focus on one room or one section at a time, rather than doing a little clearing here and a little there—you’ll notice greater results. The sense of satisfaction you’ll derive from finishing this job will help inspire you to tackle clutter in other parts of your home.
Throw out everything that is really useless
Do you have a drawer full of expired coupons? Warranties to products you no longer own? Plastic containers with no lids? Single socks? Start by trashing all this trash. You’ll immediately see progress and free up space.
Get rid of the biggest stuff first
Eliminate the biggest pieces first––the exercise bike no one rides or the giant panda you won four years ago at the fair. Making a noticeable dent in your clutter can help motivate you to continue with your task.
Return borrowed stuff
One of the easiest and least painful ways to reduce clutter is to return all the stuff lying around your home that belongs to someone else. Other people’s books, housewares, CDs, videos,
Go through your closet and get rid of 10 things you haven’t worn lately
Most people wear twenty percent of their clothing eighty percent of the time. How much of what’s hanging in your closet is just taking up space? Collect ten garments you haven’t worn in the past year and take them to a consignment shop or donate them to charity.
Pick stuff up off the floor
If you don’t have time right away to do a thorough pick up, at least collect the stuff that’s scattered on the floor. Stash everything in a laundry basket or large box until you can deal with it properly. Your home will look neater instantly.
Toss or fix broken stuff
Are you holding on to broken articles that you keep meaning to repair, but never seem to get around to it? If something has languished in its broken state in a closet, basement, or garage for more than a few months, either fix it or throw it away.
Every time you acquire something new, get rid of something old
This rule applies to everything—clothes, toys, books, CDs, etc. If you throw out, recycle, or give away something each time you get something new, mathematics show that your clutter can’t increase. Skye Alexander is the author of more than forty books and has written for numerous magazines including Better Homes and Gardens and Country Home.

Hormones
by Sabrina Griggs, RPH
. . . the key to health
The speaker at a recent seminar we attended began his presentation by saying, “We’re living longer, in poorer health, than ever before!” This profound statement prompted a deeper dive into the why. And while diet and lifestyle are contributing factors, declining hormone levels can be a major driving force.
effective but were fraught with side effects. Today we compound bioidentical hormone replacement therapies based on yam, the closest available natural source. Benefits of proper hormone levels and balance for both genders include reduction of brain fog and greater mental acuity, higher energy levels, improvement in muscle mass, and better mood. Other physical symptoms are relieved specific to each gender.
Hormones of one kind or another control virtually every aspect of health and bodily function. And what we normally refer to as “sex hormones” are involved in many other aspects of our physiology. Long before puberty, estrogen and testosterone play a critical role in brain development and neurological signaling as well as response to stress and memory. Sex hormones also regulate skeletal growth and muscle development.
Comprehensive testing is the proper method to ascertain appropriate dosage as other factors beyond specific hormone levels can affect the best outcome. At the Apothecary Shoppe we offer prescription and nutritional consultation by appointment. At the Hill Country’s premier wellness center, adding life to your years is more than just a slogan, it’s our passion and purpose.
As we age our natural hormone production begins to decline, leaving the body deficient in the necessary control mechanism. In women this is known as menopause. But just as prevalent is andropause in men. Early hormone therapy utilized manufactured chemical analogs of sex hormones or “natural” hormones extracted from animals. These drugs were erratically

"Pandemic Shuffle"
Here at the Dietert Center, we feel like that’s what we’ve been doing over the past nine months—the “Pandemic Shuffle.” Our greatest concern is the health and safety of our seniors and we know that social isolation is detrimental to their health. We’ve been open to the community and then closed while the infection numbers rose. During this crazy time, we have still been here all the time for our seniors in need. A few highlights from our year include: • Prepared and delivered over 70,000 meals to our homebound seniors • Prepared and provided over 11,500 meals in our Friendship Café and drive-thru services • Loaned out 1,000 medical equipment items and answered over 1,300 calls for community information and referral services • Assured our Call Reassurance program participants over 4,600 times that we are here waiting for their call • Installed and maintained over 325 Personal Alert Link (PAL) units so seniors know someone is there at a push of a button if needed
• We are so honored to have had over 400 volunteers provide over 49,000 hours of service for our programs and especially 200 of those volunteers that deliver our Meals on Wheels each weekday. Thank you for helping care for our community seniors. • Our Dietert staff family continues to be available daily to help wherever needed. Please give us a call. Get ready to
Prune
by Trena Cullins
Winter months are the best for pruning and shaping up your landscape. January and February, usually our coldest months, means trees and shrubs are at their most dormant stage. This also means that most pests are hibernating and less likely to infect fresh-cut wounds. Most fruit trees benefit from pruning into a wine glass shape. This allows the major scaffold limbs to become strong enough to support fruit. Prune established fruit trees to encourage horizontal growth and remove any limbs that are growing downward. Be sure to remove dead wood at any time of the year. Shrubs also benefit from pruning dead wood and shaping for the growing season. All perennials should be pruned as well. And most evergreens should be shaped now. Don’t remove more than forty percent of growth but do remove any dead wood. Avoid “Crape Murder!” Every year people commit this heinous act. Do not top your

crape myrtles! This does not prevent your tree from growing tall. Instead, it causes long, stringy shoots, knobby trunks, and ultimately untimely death. Remember—only trim branches no larger than your pinky. Most small dead twigs can be removed at any time. Seed heads can be trimmed after blooming for quicker reblooming. You’ll be greatly rewarded in the spring and summer by taking these steps now. Texas Master Certified Nursery Professional Trena Cullins (#4985) has been with The Plant Haus 2 for twenty years.
