Aesthetics find yours at Bella Luz

C

atching up with Bella Luz founder Kathy Simmons is like controlling the

weather—impossible. Always a whirlwind of positive energy, Kathy made ample use of her COVID quarantine not only to expand Bella to its new 3,000 square-foot space at 117C Hugo St., but also to develop a previously unknown artistic talent— painting. Kathy’s first show, “A Peek Into My Past and Present Through Color and Texture,” is running through May 16 at Grape Juice in downtown Kerrville. Her big and bold acrylic images reveal the same beautiful, vibrant aesthetic results she achieves at Bella. Her art, like her work, inspires confidence and well-being— essentially, you just feel good!

The evolution of Bella For Kathy, every individual is a personal masterpiece. “Aesthetic choices aren’t just black and white,” she explains. “Services and products are constantly evolving and improving. There is something new every six months.” Bella, founded by Kathy in 2006, is a leading Hill Country age-management center treating people from throughout Texas and the United States. “We now offer an array of medical providers to address the complexity of aging,” says Kathy. “At Bella, we want people to have a different approach than mainstream medicine.” From stem cell and hormone therapies to acupuncture and skincare, Kathy has assembled an exciting synergy of medicine, health, and beauty for her clients to look and feel their best. “Beauty expectations have become much higher,” Kathy continues. “Social media has a profound influence on what is perceived as beauty because you see everybody’s perfect world on Facebook and Instagram. Part of our job is to bring people’s expectations into reality. “We should want to look age-appropriate and put forward our best Glow possible,” Kathy adds. “The finest compliment I hear is when a client says, ‘I went out with my girlfriends. They said I look so good. They knew something was different but couldn’t figure it out, asking if I’d lost weight? Did I change my hair?’ That is the best compliment—not where did you get your lips done? continue to next page KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE | MAY-JUNE 2021 | 9

"Our main goal is a realistic outcome for everyone,” states Kathy. “I love aesthetics. It’s my favorite thing in the world when someone comes in for a follow-up and they have a little giddy-up-in-theirgo. We also are mindful of budgets. Prices range from a $45 facial to a $3,400 laser, with many choices in between.” “We aren’t here to tell you what we need to change about you,” says Bella aesthetician Michelle Schmidt, who has worked in aesthetics since 2003. “We are here to help you feel better. We listen instead of telling you what is hot on the market.”

What’s New

Skin care for you

However, the market is hot. Some estimates project the worldwide medical aesthetic market for women and men to be worth $26.53 billion by 2024.

Today, dozens of options are available for skincare: Dermapen®, peels, lasers, hyaluronic brightening, and stem cell treatments. Kathy has four laser machines, each one offering a different benefit. Injectables and lasers are the most popular treatments to address significant issues: pigment changes, birthmarks, sun damage, textural changes, laxity, hair reduction, and skin tightening.

Kathy agrees. She is a registered nurse and worked side-by-side with a plastic surgeon for eleven years in the OR, ER, and office. And she ran her own home health agency for twenty-plus years. She’s had a front-row seat to the evolution. “I remember in the early 2000s when injectables were first on the market. We only had three fillers to use for lips and cheeks, and now there are many to choose from based on what works for the client. I always have talked people out of injecting their lips if it isn’t going to give the best outcome.”

“Skin is the largest organ of the body, plus it’s the one that shows. I’ve wondered why people ignore it,” Kathy continues. One tip she offers: a face with uniform color will look more youthful, even if it has wrinkles, than someone with irregular color and no wrinkles. continue to next page

Pamper your face and body “The biggest game changer in facial skin care is the HydraFacial Elite,” says Michelle. “It’s more like a medical treatment due to the ingredients contained in the infused products. HydraFacial treatments also are effective for the legs and arms. The frequency of treatment depends on the individual, but the HydraFacial is the foundational treatment to get started on the path to skin health.” Radiofrequency microneedling, known as the Profound treatment, uses surgical-grade needles to penetrate the skin at different depths and precisely applies radiofrequency to layers of the dermis. “It gives you thirty-eight percent of what a facelift would give, without going under the knife,” Kathy explains. Another game changer is QWO™ (collagenase clostridium histolyticum), the first FDA-approved injectable for cellulite. Other frequently ordered treatments are Vanquish for non-invasive fat reduction and sclerotherapy, an injectable for treating small varicose and spider veins.

Sharon Stone's former makeup artist, Annie Bishop, can help you select and apply Jane Iredale skin-loving mineral cosmetics.

Hair – removal or rejuvenation Bella already uses laser technologies for hair removal, but there are numerous options to address hair loss. The Hydrafacial Keravive scalp treatment applies the same exfoliation to the scalp as the HydraFacial, plus includes an infusion serum and a 30-day at-home serum. One theory of hair growth is that clogged follicles from dead skin cells and buildup from hair care products inhibit hair growth. “If I see that, I’ll recommend a Hydrafacial Keravive treatment before I treat the scalp,” adds Kathy. “There is almost an immediate difference resulting in fuller and even new hair growth. A more intense intervention is the platelet-rich plasma therapy, a three-step process to promote natural hair growth.” 12 | MAY-JUNE 2021 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Physician-Grade Products especially for you Another huge change is how many physiciangrade products now include growth hormone serums and retinols. Kathy states, “We have proven clinical trials on the three different brands we carry—and we pick the best of everything in Yonka, SkinMedica®, Neocutis, and Jane Iredale® cosmetics.” Both SkinMedica® and Yonka were developed to help burn victims. “The products evolved into what is known as ‘cosmeceuticals.’ SkinMedica® pioneered and patented TNS® (tissue nutrient solutions), a naturally secreted blend of more than 380 growth factors, cytokines, matrix proteins, and ten antioxidant moisturizers designed to improve skin’s appearance. It’s also the only product we carry for antioxidants. Makeup artist Annie Bishop, formerly Sharon Stone’s makeup artist, also helps you select and apply the best Jane Iredale® mineral and skin-loving cosmetics. Compounding cosmeceuticals is another new trend customizing medications, nutrients, and supplements to meet an individual’s unique needs. Asked their personal secrets to lasting beauty, Kathy and Michelle agree, “Prevention is a lot less expensive than correction, and it’s easier. The sooner you start caring for your beauty regimen and your skin, the better off you’ll be.” For your Bella Luz consultation call Kathy Simmons, RN, BSN Michelle Schmidt, Aesthetician Bella Luz MD 117C Hugo, Kerrville, TX 78028 BellaLuzMD.com

Texas Masters of Fine Art & Craft Invitational Show returns!

S

g

urviving 12 months of shutdown has been difficult for almost everyone. But it’s been an especially challenging time for artists who make their living by personally selling their original work directly to customers. Consequently, it’s no surprise that the awardwinning artists who have exhibited together annually at the Texas Masters of Fine Art & Craft Show are eager to return to the YO Ranch Hotel, May 28-30.

Jackie Knott

"Riverwalk"

Linda Baker, who coordinates the show along with her husband, Dan, says, “We’re excited and, at the same time, a bit nervous to be able to get back together with our artist friends and our many loyal patrons. Our goal is for this year’s show to be as much fun as the ones in the past and to still be as safe as possible. Most of our artists qualify for AARP membership and some have serious health issues. So, we’re asking everyone attending the show to please respect each other and try to follow recommended Covid protocols.” The Texas Masters of Fine Art & Craft Show is unique in that it is produced and run by the artists themselves. Each invited exhibitor is a recognized master in their chosen media, from oil painting, ceramics, and watercolors to pyrography, fiber, metalsmithing, jewelry, woodworking, and sculpture. After 18 years, the show has established a national reputation as a prestigious “collectors’ showcase” with some of Texas’s finest artists exhibiting their work in the comfortable, gallery-like setting of the YO Hotel’s ballrooms.

Manuel S. Franco This year there’ll be three new faces among the regulars displaying their work at the YO Hotel. Jackie Knott, from Fredericksburg, and Virginia Howell, from El Dorado, are both oil painters with distinctively different styles. Carlos Moseley, who constructs scenes from native rocks he finds on his ranch outside of Fredericksburg, will also be a first-time exhibitor. Although these three are new to the YO show, they’ve shown with the rest of the artists at other events over the years. continue to next page

The Texas Masters of Fine Art & Craft Show will take place in the grand ballroom of the YO Ranch Hotel, Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30. The show hours will be Friday, 10 a.m. -7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free. One returning artist, Edith Maskey, a watercolorist from Comfort, exhibited at the very first Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair held on the Schreiner College campus in 1972. Other pioneers of Texas art shows who’ll be at the YO Hotel include Edith’s husband, John, also a watercolorist and Amado Peña II, whose stylized Southwest mixed media paintings have gained international recognition. Dan and Linda Baker, the Texas Masters coordinators, first exhibited their handcrafted jewelry in a booth next to Amado’s at an art show in 1974.

Steve Kriechbaum

Dan adds, “We’ve watched each other’s kids grow up over the years from infancy into their 40s and 50s. We have about the same relationship with most of the other artists, as well. The Texas Masters show is as much of a reunion as it is a professional art show.”

Gary Thompson

Not being able to go to art shows has been hard on art collectors, too. One of those faithful patrons is Carl Brown, a retired natural gas executive from Dallas. Carl and his wife, Barbara, a retired pharmacist, have been coming to Kerrville on Memorial Weekend for almost 40 years. Carl says, “Over the years of coming to the Texas Masters show at the YO Hotel we’ve gotten to be friends with most of the artists that regularly show there. It will be nice getting to visit with them again and see what new artwork they’ve been able to create during this hiatus.” He continues, “We’ve always loved the Hill Country in the spring—there’s so much going on to see every year--the other shows, the antique malls and of course it’s usually time for Stonewall peaches.”

"Prickly Pear Table"

Manuel S. Franco, from Dumas, is another long-time exhibitor at the Texas Masters whose Southwestern themed watercolors and bronze sculptures have won awards at art shows from Texas to Wyoming. “I cannot wait to be back in Kerrville,” Manuel shares,” The YO is a great place to hang out with my customers and all the other artists. We always have a good time. And if I don’t have new pieces that my regular collectors haven’t seen before, they’ll be disappointed.” The common expectation of all the artists showing this upcoming Memorial Weekend is to share a lot of laughs with each other and the public—and find good homes for their beautiful works of art.

Trifle for Two Let me share some of my childhood with you. Trifle was a very big treat for my family, only to be eaten on special occasions like birthdays, Christmas Eve, Easter, and of course when my grandparents came to visit. Sherry trifle was for the grownups only. My sisters and I were only allowed to have the child’s version, which was even better—lots of fresh fruit custard and fresh cream. Now doesn’t that make your mouth water! I grew up in a small village in England; some of you might remember Barton Mills with Mildenhall Air Force base eight miles away and on the other side, Lakenheath Air Force Base. My father was the local bobby—policeman as most of you know them by. He used to ride his bicycle through the seven villages for which he was responsible. My dad loved his trifle with the sherry in it, not me; I’ve always liked my child-friendly version with lots of grated chocolate on the top. So this recipe I’m sharing is a very quick, simple trifle for two to go right along with your tea for two. This delight will stay spectacular looking in your refrigerator until ready to serve. You’ll especially enjoy this refreshing treat on a hot summer’s day. But then again, it never was a hot summer’s day as I remember diving into my trifle. So whatever your pleasure, your trifle will do nicely for an afternoon tea or a light dessert.

Bridget Dale, also known as Queen B, is a born and bred Brit who became an American citizen to serve thirty years in the US Air Force. Perhaps better known locally for her culinary skills, Bridget owned and operated Queen B’s Tearoom in Ingram, Texas from 2002 until 2013. People came from far and wide to enjoy her thoroughly British savory and sweet treats, along with the fun atmosphere. Queen B now dedicates her days to the Hill Country Youth Ranch Thrift Store in Ingram, Texas. She still loves to cook the foods of her homeland and invites you to volunteer at the Thrift Store, where you still may enjoy her delightful treats from time to time. Editors note: Bridget gave me this lovely and delicious “trifle for two,” but to me it was a trifle for six, two for five days, or one for a week or more. So you have options—share it or keep it all to yourself.

Where are the Plants?

Quality Care.

by Trena Cullins

Our first beautiful spring in thirtyplus years without significant shrubs, trees, and perennials. Our plant industry is in the pattern of wait, wait, and then wait some more. Winter storm URI brought eight snow and ice-covered days of unprecedented weather. Texas A&M agriculture department reported a minimum of $600 million dollars agricultural loss in the State of Texas. Plant growers in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana lost a minimum of five years in the growing operations. Homeowners everywhere are reporting major losses to their landscapes. The most-planted evergreen in our area is not really a true shrub and/or groundcover. Rosemary and lavender are herbs that we use in landscaping due to its ability to withstand drought, heat, and is very deer resistant. Hardy to URI temperatures? Hardly. This saying is also true for most of

our landscape plants. Some are truly gone, while some others will take years before we know of their survival. At best, we are still weeks, maybe months before the common plants we have come to rely on will be readily available. As you know, all good things come to those who wait. In our case, it just takes time to grow. Texas Master Certified Nursery Professional Trena Cullins (#4985) has been with The Plant Haus 2 for twenty years. The Dietert Center keeps you independent

In a normal year (pre-pandemic), besides providing great meals, stimulating classes and activities, the Dietert Center’s Community Services Department offers help for those less active, as well as their caregivers. Dietert’s Community Services Coordinator, Nick Villanueva, welcomes Kerr County seniors’ inquiries regarding area services. He helps with everything from home health agencies to senior housing, plus handyman volunteers who assist with small home repairs. Our free Reassurance Call service has clients who live alone call the Center each morning to check-in before 10:00 a.m. If a call is not received by this time, we call to check on them. This program assures these friends they’re not alone. Last year we answered 4,668 check-in calls. Dietert’s free Medical Equipment Lending program is recycling at its finest. We accept clean, gently used items such as walkers, canes, shower chairs, wheelchairs, and other items then lend them to those in need. Last year we loaned over 900 pieces of equipment. Nick Villanueva, Community Services Coordinator, can be reached at 830-792-4044, ext. 244.

Healing Hands by Reiki Master Anne Schneider

Kerrville is a small town

in Central Texas with a population of about 24,000. Majestic cypress trees line the Guadalupe River running through this area graced by wildlife. Having grown up in Houston’s bustling metropolis I am blessed now to call this peaceful place home. This is an edited excerpt from Anne’s article for the 2018 summer issue of Touch magazine in the United Kingdom. To honor confidentiality and to uphold patient and staff privacy in accordance with US laws, names used in this article are fictitious. The local Reiki volunteer program was suspended in March 2020, because of the pandemic. The Healing Hands Unit looks forward to returning for service at the Kerrville campus of South Texas Veterans Health Care System when it is deemed appropriate by the Department of Veterans Affairs to do so. 36 | MAY-JUNE 2021 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

ver since attending my First Degree Reiki training in 2006, I envisioned using Reiki here at our local Veterans’ medical facility. Back then, very few people in Kerrville knew what Reiki was (and was not). I found misunderstanding and even fear about Reiki in the community and so embarked on an educational campaign to bring knowledge of Reiki and its benefits to the Texas Hill Country.

sharing Reiki with our Veterans

Healing Hands Unit (HHU)

It was not until a decade later, when the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) received a recreation therapist from New York City’s Department of Veterans Affairs, that I was invited to share Reiki as a volunteer with inpatients in Kerrville. Commenting on the effectiveness of Reiki at the VA facility where he previously worked, Frank the new therapist asked a Yoga for Veterans instructor at our local VA, “Where are the Reiki volunteers?” The yoga instructor, gratefully a friend of mine, referred me to Frank. Frank and I met several times as we grew to know each other and share our vision for the Reiki volunteer program at the STVHCS. I followed up with a formal written presentation, introducing the newly created Healing Hands Unit—its mission statement and scope of practice designed specifically for our Kerrville VA. A training period followed for six members of the HHU, along with a three-month application process for each of us to become approved by the VA as official volunteers. The HHU first began seeing patients on April 2, 2017. Now, four dedicated members of the HHU work in pairs to bring Reiki to Kerrville’s inpatient Veterans for an hour once a week. Our current sponsor Robert, a First Degree Reiki practitioner himself, selects recipients who have agreed to receive Reiki. Occasionally a Veteran chooses to tell us their diagnosis and we keep this, along with their identity, in confidence. Because of patient privacy laws, HHU volunteers receive no diagnosis or medical information about the Veterans with whom they share Reiki. Without access to these details there can be no quantifiable patient outcomes. Research data about Reiki are scarce. Pharmaceutical companies do not fund clinical studies in Reiki. Thankfully, several years ago St. George’s Hospital in London began hospital-based research to which future medical professionals can refer. As we await more of these innovative studies, we continue to share our anecdotal stories—stories about individuals we’ve encountered in our practice of Reiki.

Veteran’s Reiki remembrances James is well into his nineties—one of the few remaining World War II US Air Force pilots. Today his private aide wheels his chair into Frank’s office to meet me and my HHU partner for the first time. James wears a dress shirt and stylish v-neck sweater. Freshly shaven and his silver hair neatly combed, the Veteran tells us that he had a stroke four years ago and suffers from debilitating headaches, body tremors, and depression.

Before we can begin the Reiki session, James surprises us with talk about his long ago experiences with Reiki. He says he learned the healing therapy from “a man who was crippled” and mentions being in the state of Oregon in the 1980s. His train of thought fades in and out as periodic tremors unsettle his body. The Veteran adds he received First and Second Degree Reiki training but that now he does not remember everything. With a shaky finger in the trembling palm of his hand, he attempts to begin a Reiki session for himself. Becoming confused, he shakes his head and drops his hands to his lap. This remarkable elder stirs my heart. I kneel to hold his hand, to look into his cloudy eyes and ask, “James, do you remember from your past Reiki training you still can place your hands on yourself and receive Reiki?” He nods his head but does not speak. My partner and I begin the session—I standing behind the wheelchair with my hands on his shoulders, my partner sitting in a nearby chair to place her hands on his upper legs. James sighs and relaxes now with only occasional tremors. As the session progresses he continues to sigh and eventually dozes off, his head bent slightly forward. Further into the treatment James straightens up and with his eyes still closed, raises his trembling hands to remove his glasses and lay them in his lap. His wobbly hands come up to both sides of his face. The Veteran appears to be giving himself Reiki while my partner and I proceed with our work. From time to time he mumbles “yes, yes, still Reiki.” As we end his session James rouses from the place he’s retreated to in his mind. He haltingly recalls for us Reiki experiences from forty years ago with his family and friends. This powerful reconnection to healing blesses us all.
