Cook’s New Digs Meanwhile, Christie’s ex, architect Peter Cook, has just purchased a three bedroom waterfront ranch house three properties away from his previous home in Sag Harbor for $2.175 million.The structure, which boasts a dock and views of Sag Harbor Bay, will make a nifty renovation project for Cook, who is known for stunning redesigns of homes with potential. Manor, the North Haven compound of Richard Gere, for a reported $33M. We noted in a recent column that now that the property had been reduced to a salable figure it would go fast, and it did. Within a Hamptons minute of the price being lowered to $36.5M, Lauer scooped it up. The 6.2 acre waterfront property was listed originally in 2013 at $65M, nearly double the final ask. Lauer then proceeded to put a waterfront Southampton house on the market for $3.95 million, which he’d bought for $2.15M in 2009. The Cape Cod-style 1,800 sf abode is set down

Farrell Heads West Hot shot builder Joe Farrell and his wife, Kristen, have stepped into the NYC spec market with their first NYC gut renovation. The power couple only purchased the Penthouse duplex with wraparound
terraces at 510 Park Avenue in January when they paid $4.4M for it. Completion date is November 2016 enacting the same “build it like you mean it” motto in time and quality. Open House Kean Development Company has announced the opening of Tower House, their second residence in Olde Towne, the builder’s uber luxurious Southampton development. SEASIDE GARDENING SECRETS
W
e East Enders, whether we are here year round or just for the summer, love our gardens. The rich blue flowers of hydrangeas are summer icons, their lovely blossoms echoing the sky above. And fall brings masses of Montauk daisies.What would we do without them? But the seashore can be a tough place for plants, as gardeners here know. Still, the East End has many lovely landscapes and spectacular gardens that thrive year after year.There are world class garden designers and landscape architects here, and reliable local nurseries with the knowledge to guide you to the perfect garden or landscape. Consult the experts before you begin. In the meantime, here are some things to consider. Sand, salt and wind are the biggest challenges our plants face. There’s a lot of wind, and it carries with it abrasive sand and drying salt that buffet our plants. But many plants are native to this climate, and many others will thrive here if given the right location and care. If your site is exposed to strong winds, a windbreak installed between your garden and the direction of the strongest winds can make all the difference. A windbreak can protect less resilient plants behind it, and can also provide privacy for you. High hedges and plant screening that slow wind but allow it to pass through can be more effective than

BY ANNE HALPIN a solid wall or panel fence that could create damaging wind currents behind it. Soil is another consideration. The soil is sandy in many gardens, especially near the beach. Sand is a tough growing medium for plants. It doesn’t hold water and dries out fast, and it’s low in nutrients. Of course some of us are blessed with some of the best soil in the entire country, notably Bridgehampton loam, where acres of potatoes and corn still grow. But many of us must deal with sandy soil. Unless you want to grow beach grass, the best remedy for very sandy soil is to add compost and other organic matter to improve its quality. Adding an inch of compost to your garden or flower beds every spring will let you grow a wide range of plants. Be honest about the amount of sun and shade that are present in the places where you want to have gardens, especially flower gardens. Many flower garden favorites need full sun to really thrive, which means six or more hours of unobstructed sunlight a day. A couple of hours of sunlight filtered through trees is not enough to keep a rose garden blooming. If you have shady conditions, choose plants that will thrive there. Or consult an arborist about thinning or raising the tree canopy to let in more sunlight.

Deer are another issue. Their populations seem to be exploding, in part because they have no predators here, and also because as more woodlands and fields become building sites, the deer have less habitat and have moved into town. It’s nobody’s fault; the populations of both deer and people are growing, and we have to find ways to get along. To have the widest choice of plants, you need to exclude deer from your property, by fencing the entire perimeter (and the fence must be 8 to 10 feet high to keep them out), and allowing them no point of entry, including the driveway. It’s a challenge. Repellents work, too, but you have to apply them faithfully and change brands from time to time. Alternatively, you could focus your landscape on plants deer are not likely to eat, although that list seems to shrink yearly. We all know that deer love hostas and impatiens, but now they also munch on black-eyed Susans and astilbe and even Montauk daisies and thorny rugosa roses. Local professionals can advise you on the best bets for unfenced gardens. Despite the challenges, it’s still possible, and not even difficult, to have a glorious garden full of color to enjoy. Don’t be deterred; be informed.

T
here are a lot of toned bodies sashaying around the Hamptons: women sporting shoulder-baring tops and men in shorts showing off shapely legs. With all the workout options it’s no wonder we’re all in such good shape. There are tried-and-true places like Hamptons Gym Corp, which has been around for a couple of decades. Then there are popups such as Flex Studios, an outpost of the Manhattan heart-pumping workout transplanted to the Surf Lodge in Montauk for the summer. Speaking of Montauk, Tracy Anderson, whose partner is Amagansett’s Gwyneth Paltrow, has just opened a studio in that hamlet.

We sent our intrepid reporter, Heather Bryce, to check out various workouts.
The class involved the usual sun salutations and warrior poses, made extra difficult by our wobbly boards, but we managed to stay dry until a balancing pose resulted in a large splash made by one participant who had admitted to not having a regular yoga practice (something that is probably recommended). The class ended with a headstand, a pose none of the students achieved. Between poses we rested on our boards, our faces at water level soaking up the view of boats and clouds passing by, the water lapping beneath us lulling us into an almost hypnotic state.
Paddleboard Yoga One Word: Refreshing If I was sweating, I wasn’t aware of it.Yes, the poses were challenging and the late morning sun intense, but the pleasant bay breeze kept me cool and refreshed. The handful of us in a PaddleDiva standup paddleboard yoga class had hitched our boards to a buoy and were following the lead of our teacher, the matchlessly toned redhead, Jessica Cadden Osborne, an accomplished athlete and dancer who really knows her stuff. Not only was she a Radio City Rockette for seven years, but she is also an aerial acrobat with Fuerza Bruta,

SPOTLIGHT that no class is ever the same: Monday is arms and abs, Wednesday chest and so on. Weekends are dedicated to full body. My class, Tuesday, is Butt and Legs. We start at the treadmill where our teacher, Jenna, shouts instructions at us over loud driving music. We walk, jog and sprint at various speeds and inclines. When we rise to a 15% incline I feel like I might fall off, especially since we are instructed not to hold onto the bars, but instead “pump” our arms. Next we hit the floor where we put our legs into fancy elastic bands and do kicks, squats and leaps. While holding weights! Then we repeat the whole shebang all over again. Despite the powerful AC and fans, we’re sweating like proverbial pigs. It turns out that while Barry started his boot camp in West Hollywood in the ‘90s, he doesn’t have much to do with the business now. Poor him. The brand has expanded to locations all over the country and Europe. And has just added a third Hamptons location in Southampton.
Ballet Moves One Word: Graceful Elements Fitness, a barre class that opened in East Hampton a couple of years ago, has moved into pretty new digs next to Soul Cycle on Newtown Lane in East Hampton. The bright new studio sports blond
wood floors, is festooned with colorful mats, bands and balls, and is lined with mirrors, the better to watch yourself as you stretch and pump at the bar like an athletic ballerina. The studio is owned by celebrity personal trainer/ professional dancer Andrea Fornarola Hunsberger, whose dance-infused routine also incorporates yoga and Pilates. We work on mats and at the barre, alternating between challenging isometric exercises (squeezing muscles with tiny movements) and swanlike stretches. Much of the work is based on the Lotte Berk Method, a decades-old technique that has been called the “ultimate body transformation system.”

I took a weekday morning clinic designed to both provide a workout and enhance your game. (Other clinics include Cardio and Beginners.) There were four students on the court and two coaches, with Kathleen – Ms. Personality Plus – in the lead giving us a nonstop barrage of pointers as we zoomed through a series of fun and instructive drills. “Rotate your shoulders!” “Don’t rush!” “Keep your racquet back!”
One Word: Fun For me, a tennis clinic is about its happiness quotient. You’re outside among the birds and bees, and in the case of Hampton Racquet in East Hampton, the occasional train roaring by and private jet whizzing overhead.You’re inhaling deep gulps of fresh air while your legs take on a golden tan. There’s camaraderie among your fellow players who laugh at your mistakes
But mostly Kathleen was full of encouragement: “Wonderful!” “Lovely!” “Beautiful!” I began to feel like a fashion model in front of the camera. We were having so much fun that it came as a surprise when the 90 minutes was up. We all left having formed mini-friendships and looking forward to seeing each other again soon.

With an emphasis on modern and minimal design,The Interior uses clean palettes and natural elements to create timeless and refined spaces.”
Michaan is an up and coming Hamptons style star. Having recently completed a modern renovation of her own old farmhouse in Bridgehampton [pictured here], she is also now renovating a home in Sag Harbor. Stephanie adds, “To me, Hamptons style is all about ease and lightness. The Hamptons are full of so much natural beauty; my favorite spaces are those that embrace the natural elements so you truly feel like you have escaped the city.”
Stephanie adds, “As a child I was surrounded by yoga and philosophy, which comes through in my work as an interior designer. Stephanie Shares Five Fast Ways To Brighten A Room: 1. Keep the room simple & minimal - stick to neutral colors and lots of white to make the room feel light and airy. 2. Declutter and stay organized. Not having too much in each space will make it feel more open and bright. Each piece of furniture should have a purchase or be a statement piece that works with the room. 3. Use lightweight window treatments that allow for any natural light. If the room doesn’t get a lot of natural light, fake it with light weight curtains like long, white linen. 4. Brighten the room with better lighting. Mixing floor lamps or a beautiful fixture above a dining room table adds another dimension of light. 5. Pick up fresh flowers often or buying a plant that will last longer like a fig tree. The pop of natural color will breath some new life into the space making it brighter and happier.
