T

he Times, They Are A-Changin’: Gin Lane, Meadow Lane, Lily Pond Lane, Further Lane….. just some of the fabled byways that would evoke visions of exclusive estates and pricey real estate in the minds of buyers with their real estate brokers salivating at the thought of the sizeable commissions to come. From Southampton to Amagansett, the affluent buyer and their fortunate brokers would jockey for the best properties on the ocean, bays, ponds, farm fields and villages that define the exclusive areas south of 27(SOH). However Montauk Highway, our Mason-Dixon line, is starting to find itself besieged as less familiar roads with names such as Scuttle Hole, Day Lily, Robertson, Ferry, Deerfield and Hayground gain prominence. Indeed there is a large and growing number of buyers in the know who have discovered the many benefits and attractions of being north of the Highway (NOH). Money, Money, Money: For years one of the primary reasons to buy north was money. Houses and land were simply less expensive once you crossed “the Highway”. But look at these numbers….$36 Million Ferry Rd, $20+ Million Day Lily Lane, $12.5 Million Cedar Street. $9.75 Million Main Street, Sag Harbor …..just some of my significant NOH trades over the last decade. Suddenly “those” people who would buy north of the highway have turned into “the” people savvy enough to pioneer the changing landscape of the Hamptons. Certainly with the resources to purchase wherever they wanted, the buyers on the streets above opted for special properties

in unique locations. And the trend is bound to continue. In North Haven alone, there are four listings over $20M while from Southampton to Montauk the landscape north of the highway is littered with other pricy properties for sale that are garnering significant attention. Still, the buyer unconcerned with proximity to the beach is finding tremendous opportunities and superlative values at prices far below its SOH counterparts. Hard pressed to find newly constructed, two acres estates with tennis south of the highway for much less than $15M, buyers are discovering that from Southampton to Bridgehampton there are a variety of options available from just over $4M to under $10M. Looking for a nice, new house on an acre south of the highway for under $5M? Don’t look on Parsonage, Hedges or Daniels Lanes in Sagaponack. Nor should you look on Ocean Rd, Lily Pond or Further Lane where the starting prices are bound to be over $7M. But merely cross over to the other side and options abound for new construction well below for what you could find for the same house SOH. I Love Rock & Roll: And Rockers seem to love north of the highway too. Mr Margaritaville, The Piano Man, Sir Paul and the Material Girl all call north of the highway home. Media darlings Matt Lauer, Christie Binkley, Alec Baldwin as well as former Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloombrg hang their hats well north of 27. Prominent people from all walks of life have discovered the open fields, the wooded seclusion and the broad bay fronts that define the

many different areas NOH. Play golf? With the exception of the Maidstone, every 18 hole golf course IS north of the highway from the historic Shinnecock in Southampton to the tony East Hampton Golf course bordering the Springs and all the way to the very good and public Montauk Downs. Many Hamptonites actually plan their purchases so that the only long driving they do is from the tee. Build It and They Will Come: When he started building on 14 Hills Court and the very northern reaches of Deerfield Road in the mid ‘90’s, Joe Farrell could not have imagined that only 20 years later he would be offering and selling houses from $8M to nearly $10M on the farm fields of Bridgehampton North. As we all get ready to enjoy the upcoming holiday and the summer kick-off, please take a moment and give thanks to the men and women who have served and sacrificed so much to keep this country free. We are forever grateful. In our MarketWatch report this issue (page 75), we check in with several leading brokers and builders to take the pulse of the Hamptons real estate market. Leading up to the start of the summer season, the market has been extremely active across all sectors. For many offices, sales are the highest in the past 10 years. New construction and land sales are booming. As always, village and waterfront properties continue to command premium prices. These positive signs all point to another record year in the making here in the Hamptons. Be sure to check out this month’s Spotlight feature, “West of the Canal” (page 84). This string of jewels, starting with Westhampton Beach, often referred to as the “First Hampton”, provide easy access to NYC along with homes that often cost a fraction of similar properties further east. Beautiful beaches, fine dining and a small town feel make the area a very desirable part of the Hamptons. Architect Maziar Behrooz, creator of the iconic Arc House in East Hampton, along with many other highend homes in the Hamptons, has now designed an AIA award winning pre-fab structure dubbed the insta_ House, the first of which will be installed on Shelter Island this summer (page 88). fter one of the coldest Februarys on record combined with an endless cycle of snow and ice, spring has finally sprung. And with it has come the incredible desire to obtain that beautiful oasis in the Hamptons. With new construction booming, interest rates low, and pricing up, the time is right to secure your piece of paradise in the Hamptons. Judi Desiderio of Town & Country Real Estate observes, “The new rule for rentals is July or August as opposed to Memorial Day – Labor Day.” She adds, “This was the best winter in almost 10 years for sales, with $1-$10M fast and furious. We’ve even had bidding wars! Nearly every buyer would love new construction. There’s simply not enough of it! Certain segments of the market, such as Montauk, are experiencing dire shortages in inventory.” Judi believes, “Provided the stock market continues on its current ascend, 2015 should be an outstanding year for the number of sales. The high end (over $25M) will be determined by Wall Street activity.”

Buyers want clean post-modern shingled constructions with tall ceilings, finished basements, marble kitchens and baths. Modern glass construction is also popular.” He reflects, “There is a tremendous amount of new construction especially North of the Highway. NORTH is the NEW SOUTH in Southampton, Water Mill, and Bridgehampton, where all records for dollars per square foot are being broken and transactional prices are surpassing previously known ceilings.” Raphael thinks, “2015 will be a very strong year as Wall Street bonuses were strong.We will also see more international investors.” Steve Pryzby of Farrell Building Company expects, “a strong surge in rentals due to pent up demand during the harsh winter. Our sales have been surprisingly steady given the tough winter. The sweet spot is the $5-$7M properties. Buyers desire open space floor plans that incorporate the outdoors into living areas through retractable glass walls and doors.” He remarks, “New

The elevated sales volume kept inventory stable.” Cynthia predicts, “continued strength in the market as interest rates are still at historic lows and the U.S. dollar continues to strengthen.” Gary DePersia of Corcoran anticipates, “a very active rental market heading into summer. Sales are good and picking up steam with the disappearance

of the snow. There are even bidding wars happening. The $4-$10M range on new construction is extremely active both North and South of the Highway. You will also see increased activity and sales in the super luxury level from $10-$25M. There are houses available in all locations and prices.” Gary predicts, “2015 will be a very active year. NEW is trumping location as the primary criteria of many buyers. New homes continue to be built at a significant pace.” He reflects, “The investor spec market is inflating South of the Highway in Bridgehampton, Southampton, Watermill, and Wainscott.” Andrew remarks, “As long as interest rates are low with a strong stock market and steady

economy, and no unsettling macro event, 2015 will be a dynamic year.” Pat Petrillo of Sotheby’s International Realty reflects, “The rental market is good. Over the winter, sales were busy at the $5M and under range. The Villages are very popular right now as they are close to activities and the beach. Buyers are looking in every price range for something ‘just perfect.’ New construction is popular especially for second-home buyers.” She anticipates, “The $10-$15M range will be very active later in the summer. Prices are stable, the market is very healthy, and the financial markets are very strong.” Pat predicts, “We are going to have an excellent 2015.” 2015 is predicted to be a fantastic year for Hamptons real estate.With interest rates low and new construction booming, now is the time to jump in. Netflix will be launching a supernatural drama series called simply, Montauk, next year. Directed and written by twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, the show is a coming-of-age vehicle about a boy who disappears. With enough supernatural “thrills” to capture a global audience, according to Netflix, the suspenseful show will surely attract a rapt South Fork viewership too … at least for the pilot.

The 5-acre former East Deck Motel and Resort in Montauk is on the market for $25M, listed by Rylan Jacka and Edward Bruehl of Sotheby’s. Bishops Grant Breaks Ground The Beechwood Organization, known for Bishops Pond, a Southampton community of luxury villas and townhomes, is planning a new mini development on a private cul de sac off North Main Street in Southampton Village, where new homes are at a premium. Starting at $4.5 million, each house – situated on one acre – will have 6,500 square-

feet of living space, 7 bedrooms, and 6.5 bathrooms. Southampton native, Jason Paremba, is the project’s architect. The 4-acre wooded property is part of the original land grant to the Bishop family and the transfer to Beechwood is the first time since 1678 that the land has changed hands. Bishops Grant will appeal to homeowners “who want the same quality as Bishops Pond but in a more traditional, new but classic, single-family home,” according to Steven Dubb, principal of Beechwood. Dubb, by the way, was honored as one of “40 under 40 rising stars” in the nation’s home building industry by Professional Builder magazine. Construction is expected to begin in May for occupancy early 2016.

he Shinnecock Canal, which first opened in 1892, is a man-made waterway that cuts through the South Fork in the eastern part of Hampton Bays, connecting the Great Peconic Bay to Shinnecock Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It is both a geographical and cultural divide, separating the Hamptons into “east of the canal” from Shinnecock Hills out to Montauk and “west of the canal,” from Hampton Bays to West Hampton Dunes.” The Hamptons may evoke images of Southampton and East Hampton with their chic villages and gorgeous beaches, but hamlets west of the canal have equally beautiful beaches and cute towns. Hampton Bays, also known as the “Boat Way to the Hamptons,” was settled in 1740 as “Good Ground,” along with 10 other hamlets. In 1922, they all joined together to become Hampton Bays. Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman Real Estate observes, “Hampton Bays is an up-and-coming treasure and the only hamlet with direct access to all Hamptons waterways – the Peconic Bay, Tiana Bay, Shinnecock Bay, the Shinnecock Inlet, and the Atlantic Ocean. Commercial fishing is centered around the fishing station at Shinnecock Inlet.” Ponquogue Beach, the largest Southampton Town ocean beach, is just over the Ponquogue Bridge. “Rumba restaurant has a great waterfront deck and is a great meeting spot to catch

Originally founded in 1673 as “Fourth Neck,” in 1891 the hamlet became East Quogue. “East Quogue has a cute ‘downtown’ Main Street,” remarks Marcia Altman of Brown Harris Stevens. Enzo adds, “East Quogue has a bit of a hometown feel with great mom-and-pop type stores on its Main Street. Sonny’s Prime Meats is an old-fashioned Italian butcher store and Roses and Rice florist offers beautiful gifts and knock-your-socks off flower arrangements.” Marcia exclaims, “Dockers and Stone Creek Inn are among the best restaurants west of the canal.” East Quogue also has a nice Village Green for summer concertgoers.

Quiogue, meaning “Little Quogue,” named by Native Americans who inhabited the area about 350 years ago, is a small hamlet between Quogue and Westhampton Beach on Quantuck Bay. It was designated a “Hamlet Heritage Area” by the Town of Southampton due to its many historic homes built between 1750 and the mid-1900s.

The Village of Quogue, founded in 1659, was incorporated in 1928. Its name was derived from the Native American word “Quaquanantuck.” Marcia reflects,“Quogue Village is sizzling. I live here and enjoy the small town feel, the anonymity, the Quogue Club and of course the beautiful Quogue Village Beach.” Enzo exclaims, “Quogue is really on fire now. You can get so much more for your money, the taxes are low, and the Village beach is like having a private club at your doorstep.” Craig agrees, “Quogue Village is the hottest area right now, especially South of the Highway.” He

Considered the “First Hampton,” The Village of Westhampton Beach, settled in 1666 as “Ketchabonack,” was incorporated in 1928. “Westhampton Beach is a family-oriented, true beach town. It’s old-fashioned but hip,” according to Enzo. Remsenburg, named after a prominent resident, Charles Remsen in 1895 is perhaps the less known hamlet west of the canal. Enzo says, “Remsenburg reminds me of New England with its quaintness and understated elegance.” Marcia observes, “There is an abundance of waterfront properties at great values.” It features a great yacht club called Westhampton Yacht Squadron. West Hampton Dunes was incorporated in 1993. Enzo notes,“West Hampton Dunes features Cupsogue

rchitect Maziar Behrooz says that to create an extraordinary building, you need to take something away. With the $149,000 insta_ House, he’s put that precept into stylish practice.

house, the first of which is to be installed on Shelter Island this summer. Constructed out of corrugated steel shipping containers, the two bedroom, two bathroom 950-square-foot structure costs a mere $149,000.

Architecture, the critic Robert Hughes observed, “is the one art no one can escape.” When it comes to residential architecture, however, the most exciting work tends to go to the very rich (who can afford to commission modernist fragments against their ruin) or the desperately poor (think of the strange and beautiful straw-bale charity homes of Samuel Mockbee). If you are a person of slender means living on the East End of Long Island, where half a million dollars buys a shack with low ceilings, small windows, and a great deal of linoleum, chances are the architecture you inhabit (or which inhabits you, after a fashion) is fairly artless. Probably you don’t aspire to own a masterpiece. Really, you may tell yourself, a structure of modest cost and dimensions whose design is informed by the time and place in which we live now would do.

“People don’t believe it’s for real,” says Behrooz from his Chelsea office in the shadow of the High Line.Tall, angular, and built to a purpose--rather like his work-he’s wearing a button-down shirt, jeans, riding boots, and black-rimmed spectacles. “There’s been so much interest from all quarters.To build a home for $150,000 in this market is unthinkable.” Especially, one might add, a structure with a feeling of open space. A broad staircase, eighteen foot ceilings, and double-height horizontal windows contribute to the impression of a more expensive house.

As a socially-conscious response to the tight real estate market, Maziar Behrooz, an architect with offices in East Hampton and Manhattan, created the pre-fab insta_

Originally designed as a studio building in Amagansett for an artist on a budget--the prototype took an award from the American Institute of Architects --the insta_house was later reconceived into its present form. Contrary to convention, Behrooz set the price at the outset, a move, he says, that freed him and his team to approach the project through a process of deduction. What could they take away? The result is a piece of architectural sleekness without frippery or bling in which every design element serves a function. The water heater is hidden behind the staircase; HVAC cooling and heating units are outside. Because it is such a simple structure, it can be fabricated in eight weeks and installed in a week flat. There’s a rightness to the project, given that Behrooz is best known for far more elaborate works (the AIA award-winning Arc House in Amagansett, the Hanging Gardens house in Wainscott). But he’s no society architect. Not wanting to be pigeonholed as a designer of luxury homes, he applies himself to affordable housing projects every chance he gets. Talk turns to the great touchstones of modernist architecture. Behrooz notes that “all those buildings are based on a single idea. The Goods - Straddling the eastern Amagansett dunes, this 5,500 square-foot modern gem on two oceanfront acres is the best deal in Town and Country’s inventory according to the firm’s CEO, Judi Desiderio. East Hampton The Goods - Chris Chapin of Douglas Elliman says his best deal is a parcel at 64 Edwards Avenue, on the fringe of East Hampton Village, with four ¾-acre lots: one with a house and three to build upon. The new Post-Modern abode has four bedrooms and 3.5 baths. It’s also “the closest that you can get to Indian Wells Beach in this range.” $2.3 million Why It’s a Great Deal - “Whoever buys this and completes the subdivision process is going to wind up with four separate properties – the existing house worth $1.7million, and three additional building lots each worth $500,000 minimum,” says Chapin. That’s a total of $3.2 million.You do the math.

5. Georgica The Goods - You would think that anything in the Georgica estate section would sell like proverbial hotcakes. But this stately dwelling, built on a dune in 1901 to take advantage of ocean breezes, has been on the market for a while, suffering a series of

price reductions. Though more than a century old, Cherridune has been updated with central air, an integrated sound system and high-end appliances. The three-story main house and three-bedroom guest cottage add up to 7,400 square feet, nine bedrooms and six baths (with another two half baths). Old world landscaping includes specimen trees, stonewalls and brick walkways. $6,590,000 Why It’s a Great Deal - Today’s buyers want new. “Back in a time when old houses were sought after for charm and beauty, this was a hot item. Now everyone wants a new house on steroids,” says Brown Harris Stevens broker Martha Gundersen.

6. Sagaponack The Goods - Broker Susan Breitenbach claims that this 1.4-acre property near the ocean is the “lowest-priced house near the ocean in Sagaponack” and the “best value” in the hamlet. The 5,000-plus square-foot house has four bedrooms, 3.5 baths, library, gym, and “magnificent 50-foot pool. Though a pretty nice abode, it’s all about the land – 1.4 acres of “beautifully landscaped grounds.” The last house to sell on the

street (Erica’s Lane) with the same acreage went for almost $13 million. Price just reduced to $6,895,000. Why It’s a Great Deal - It’s being sold at land value, the house is a bonus,” says Breitenbach.

7. North of the Highway The Goods - “This grand Southampton estate situated on over five acres off Middle Line Highway is one of the best values north of the highway,” according to Douglas Elliman broker Raphael Avigdor. The owners paid $4,995,000 for the property seven years ago, before investing considerably more for improvements. The 6,000 square foot house overlooks extensive landscaping containing a pool/spa, Zen garden, and tennis court with pavilion. $4,350,000 Furnishings also available. Why It’s a Great Deal - The owners had to relocate, and this property by default is the one to go from their real estate portfolio. “Sometimes these opportunities present themselves to the market and the savvy investor sees the inherent value rather than others who are skeptical.”

The color of summer, white is the perennial go-to color in Hamptons interior design. “It's cooling and relaxing to the eye,” says Sag Harbor interior designer, Annette Azan-Baker. But it can also be stark, which is why Hamptons designers always face the challenge of downplaying the famous “non-color” in various creative ways. Here are some of the latest tricks of the trade in keeping interiors bright yet also imbuing them with warmth and diversity.

Mixing, Not Matching

In a Sag Harbor sunroom,Azan-Baker finessed a mix of whitish tonal variations from brilliant white to creams and beiges. She also took advantage of its generous number of windows to connect the interior to the colors of nature outside. The Sag Harbor designer works to create a space that reflects the personalities of her clients, and looks askance at some local designers she feels are all about a “matchy matchy sameness.”

Of course modern elements are still the rage, but to soften contemporary edginess designers are going back in time to resurrect antiques and quirky vintage finds. Sag Harbor designer Farrin Cary says that Hamptonites “crave a sense of history” as if they’ve inhabited their dwelling “for hundreds of years.” Her clients are “veering away from new” and are willing to wait for the right antique piece or found object. “It’s

Considering the area’s love affair with new builders’ homes and her clients’ desire for a sense of history, Cary often strips existing fittings and finishes such as light fixtures and hardware and replaces them with versions that contain “more patina, character and depth.” Hamptons designers, including Amy Hill, principal of an eponymous design firm in East Quogue, are creating a warmer feel by mixing gold-tone finishes, especially in kitchen and bathroom hardware and lighting. She favors rose gold, copper and brass. “We’re all so tired of stark, stale, polished nickel.” She also likes mixing metals such as “black metal with copper or one warm metal with another.”

Since many Hamptonites like their furniture white, designers are layering in textural elements such as woods, metals, leathers, wools and silks. For the model houses of a new waterfront townhouse development, Ponquogue Point in Hampton Bays, Water Mill designers Mabley Handler “have raised the sophistication level” from clichéd nautical references (think anchors and sailor hats) to installing teak and holly wood paneling “synonymous with [the] nautical luxury” found in antique Chris-Craft and Riva yachts, according to firm partner Austin Handler.

calendars to spend time in their Hamptons homes year round, they require “pops of color, particularly blue” to stand out from the usual white/cream background, says Hill, who claims that “electric and navy blue and even purple have been very popular.” These blues are showing up on fabrics, wallpaper and even furniture. Hill painted a pool table electric blue. Mabley Handler continues to use their “signature cool tone purple-gray-blue,” a color that refers to sky and water.

Statement Lighting “Clients are now looking for their lighting to not only serve as a source of illumination but also as a talking point that has more of an architectural design,” says Hill. At a designers show house in Cutchogue last summer, she placed a pair of resin horn lamps on modern white lacquer night stands from Serena and Lily as a way of contrasting an old-time element with the new. Though Hamptons designers pay attention to what’s trending outside our borders, local design stays pretty consistent. As Handler says, “We do what we like and it continues to resonate with our clients.” The main thing that Hamptonites require, he believes, is quality.“As much as people want to relax out here, they still want touches of luxury to help enhance their surroundings.”

ast End painter, sculptor, and furniture designer Jeff Muhs was born and raised in Southampton. His early interests in art were encouraged by his parents, Captain Fred [artist and third generation hunting & fishing guide] and Geraldine Muhs. “My parents instilled an intimate knowledge of our local natural environment in me, and the barrier beach of Long Island’s south shore has inspired my work greatly,” shares Muhs, whose work relates the beauty of our natural world through his expressionistic painting style, creating a unique artistic vision based on the evolution of our environment. HRES visited the eclectic Southampton home and studio of the highly collectible Hamptons artist to see his latest works in progress. The artist curates the Shinnecock Hills home that he

n a land where we play an annual game of musical shops and restaurants each new season, it’s always fun to see which businesses have survived, which have bitten the proverbial dust, and which brave new souls are willing to risk our beloved South Fork’s seasonal fluctuations and high rents in order to stake a claim to the reams of summer money and bragging rights to a Hamptons location.

The Club at Philippe will also provide an al fresco sushi bar on two back patios.

East Hampton

The biggest news is an incoming fitness studio (as if we need another), which will be moving into 30 Park Place. Wellness entrepreneur Tracy Anderson and her partners Gwyneth Paltrow (no intro needed) and Maria Baum are developing the 3,000 square-foot space scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend, to include food and retail options. Did we mention that it will be open year round? Anderson’s studio in Water Mill will remain.

In East Hampton, the turnover was not as great as in other years according to commercial real estate guru Hal Zwick of Town and Country. Renters last year took long leases making for “more stability and less availability.” However, he confirms that several have gone including Coach, Kate Spade, Lieb Cellars, Lord & Guy and C. Wonder.

Highway Diner in Wainscott is coming back, sort of. Last season the spot was rented out to Shuko as a pop-up, now the space will morph into the Highway Restaurant & Bar. Without the diner moniker we suspect prices will rise. Same ownership sold last April to a group in the city, local group sold a year later.

C. Wonder will also be gone from the Southampton location as, alas, the clothing and home goods chain founded by billionaire and Tory Burch ex, Chris Burch, declared bankruptcy this winter, closing all stores

Miami’s Momi Ramen, where noodles are made fresh daily and served with 18-hour simmered pork bone broth, is slated to open year round in the place of East Hampton’s former Turtle Crossing. After many years as a lively nightspot, Georgica held its last shindig last summer, but the space overlooking a finger of Georgica Pond will be taken over by Osteria Salina, which has been holding fort at 95 School Street in Bridgehampton. A bistro will take Osteria’s place according to the New York Post.


SPOTLIGHT Southampton Southampton has been a holdout for a long time, but it seems that finally a Starbucks will be encroaching upon the quaint village. An outpost of the mega chain is already hiring baristas to man its space on Hampton Road, across from Citarella. A good place to use the bathroom while zipping around town. Glamorous hotspot Beautique will be taking roost at the Capri Hotel, which has hosted such pop-ups as Nobu and BLT Steak. The hotel was purchased by LA attorney to the stars, Mark Geragos, in February. The question is, will the East End space channel the spirit of Coco Chanel’s Paris house, as the restaurant’s website claims its 58th Street place does? Delmonico’s, which has lasted for centuries in New York, only lasted a couple of years in the space across from the train depot. Circo, son of Le Cirque (Sirio Maccione’s sons’ more casual eatery), is going into the space. Bye-by also to Nammos Estiatorio, the upscale Greek tavern, on Southampton’s Main Street.

The space that held mainstay Barristers for eons was given a chic makeover last fall and rechristened as Le Charlot, a French bistro imported from the Upper East Side, with a “Left Bank feel” according to the NewYork Times. Jeans mogul Scott Morrison will be expanding his upscale denim brand, 3×1, to Main Street, modeling it after his SoHo flagship. Is there really such a thing as bespoke jeans? Vinegar and olive oil emporium Vines & Branches has exited Southampton, but relocated to bustling Greenport.

Sag Harbor After two years undergoing a full facelift, the once down the heels Baron’s Cove Inn, will open its new and improved doors to host guests in its 67 rooms (rates range from $299 per night to $799 for a double-height loft with private deck.) It will also contain a new 85-seat high-end restaurant helmed by Chef Matty Boudreau, formerly of Vine Street Cafe on Shelter Island.

Like its predecessor, the market will purvey prepared meals, produce and pantry items. Tee and jeans maestro Henry Lehr will open a Sag Harbor boutique. Plaza Sports with locations in Montauk and Rocky Point will be opening in the former dry cleaners. The Ideal, Main Street’s standby stationery store, will be gone. And, finally a fond farewell to the Kardashians, who were only using their retail space in Southampton as an excuse to film a TV show.They will not be missed.

ADD COLOR TO YOUR HAMPTONS GARDEN

n summer on the East End we revel in color, from the sea and sand, of course, and from the flowers that fill gardens everywhere. A big flower garden can be a lot of work, but you can get a lot of dazzle for not a lot of work with two classic summer flowers that you can plant in spring and enjoy in summer. Both lilies and daylilies have mostly trumpet-shaped flowers, but they are very different plants, each offering their own rewards. Daylilies are incredibly easy to grow, come in a huge and ever-expanding range of colors, and require practically no care. How can you go wrong with such a plant? Daylilies will make themselves at home in any ordinary garden soil.They’ll bloom in full sun or partial shade; pastel pinks, soft yellows, peach, mauve and white flowers hold their color best in partial to light shade; in full, blazing sun plant daylilies in bright gold, mahogany red, rich orange and other strong colors. Each daylily bloom lasts just a single day, but plants 100

bear loads of them. Each flowering stem bears several blossoms, one at a time. When the last bloom on the stem has wilted, cut off the stalk at its base. Reblooming daylily varieties such as Stella de Oro and her relatives, and hybrids with Returns as part of their name (such as Happy Returns and Rosy Returns) will produce new flowering stems all summer long. You can also plant early, midseason and late-blooming daylily varieties. Knowledgeable staff at local nurseries can guide you in your choices. True lilies, aristocrats of the summer garden, include the deliciously fragrant Casa Blanca and Star Gazer lilies found in florist shops and bridal bouquets, along with a huge number of others Lily classification is very complex, and both species and hybrid forms can find a home in your garden. There are Asiatic Hybrids, Aurelian Hybrids, martagons, trumpets, Turks caps and so many more to choose from. If you want to have lilies in your landscape, search for them by their flowering times—early, mid or late summer—then choose them by color. Good local nurseries and garden centers offer a decent selection of lily plants ready to bloom, and many

more are available from online and mail-order sources. Lilies used to be considered hard to grow, but the hybrids we plant today are tougher than their finicky forebears. If you give them the right spot they’ll reward you with lavish—and deliciously fragrant—blossoms year after year. Lilies grow best in light, humusy soil that is rich in organic matter and well drained. Whether your garden is blessed with rich Bridgehampton loam or poorer, sandier soil, adding lots of organic matter in the form of compost to it is a good idea. Lilies cannot tolerate soggy soil and standing water around their bulbs. They also do not like hot soil, so give them a good layer of a loose, organic mulch to help keep the soil cooler in summer. A location in filtered sun for most of the day is ideal for lilies. During dry weather water the plants once or twice a week before they bloom; after bloom is finished they like drier conditions. Above all, when your lilies are in bloom be sure to cut some stems to bring indoors—a vase of lilies can perfume a whole room. Breathe deeply and enjoy.
