Like many, the gridiron great refrained from using his own name for the sale, instead listing a limited liability company—named after Mr. Chester, the family pooch. The Cavalier King Charles spaniel is somewhat of a celebrity in his own right. That is, if you credit a feature devoted to him in People. Perched on 1.21 acres, the modern three-story home with 5-bedrooms and 4-baths should be spacious enough for the NFL star, his wife and three young daughters. And we’re thinking that if the family gets a visit by Eli’s brother Peyton, now retired from the gridiron, the football great will appreciate the property’s private beach entrance. $8.5M

Peaceful Agreement When Mariska Hargitay and her husband purchased the East Hampton Village home of Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, it boasted a treehouse, swing set and basketball hoop that would be just dandy for August, the 10-year-old son of the “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star. Alas, her neighbors objected to

the proximity of the structures to their property, and the village ruled in their favor. Hargitay will have to move the structures back from the property line, which Kirke built for his daughters, including “Girls” star Jemima Kirke. This despite a letter from August stating: “I promise to play basketball really, really, really quietly.”

Estate Online (HREO), its longtime listing portal, the seemingly irrelevant company has been picked up by Zillow -- well, actually StreetEasy, one of the real estate database firms in Seattle-based Zillow’s stable. Terms of the deal were not available at press time, but Zillow is not exactly frugal, having spent $2.5 billion to purchase Trulia in 2015.

Done Deal Talk about a steep price reduction. A 1903 pile built for coal baron William Atwater by Henry Bacon, the architect who designed the Lincoln Memorial, is finally in contract after its last ask at $16.75M, less than half its original $39M million price in 2008. The 16,000-square-foot home listed with Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, at 66 Seafield Lane in Westhampton Beach South, is on 6.86 acres that includes a picturesque carriage house enwrapped with century-old grape vines. Not to mention its formal gardens, rolling lawns, greenhouse and pool.

Hotelier Needed The Ram’s Head Inn, which has served guests since 1929, is on the market for the first time in almost 40 years, listed with Peter McCraken of The Corcoran Group, asking just shy of $12M. Whoever buys the 4.3-acre parcel with 800 feet of beach frontage can maintain it as an inn, convert it into a private home or subdivide the property. We think that the storied lodgings with their 22 guest rooms, 15 baths, 180-seat dining room, tennis court, dock and moorings should

Fertile Office In a span of two weeks over the holidays, three agents in Douglas Elliman’s East Hampton office gave birth (or rather, their wives did). James Keogh sired Peter Vincent Keogh (12/28/16); Telly Karoussos is dad to Mimi Jayne Karoussos (1/1/17), while Justin Agnello calls Graham Charles Agnello (1/11/17) son. BTW, Peter Vincent and Graham Charles are first cousins as Justin Agnello is married to James Keogh’s sister. Congrats to all, and we’re hoping the old adage is true that good luck comes in threes.

Musical Lairs After spending a whopping – even by Hamptons standards — $36.5 million for Strongheart Manor, Richard Gere’s pastoral North Haven estate earlier this year, Today Show host Matt Lauer put two properties in his Hamptons real estate portfolio on the market. Though rumors of the sale of his North Sea cottage were rampant last summer, the deal fell through. Six months after the property was listed the relatively modest bay front cottage has sold for $3.5 million, significantly less than the $3.950 million ask, but considerably more than the $2.1 million he paid in 2009. Also last summer Lauer put his 25-acre main

Hamptons residence, a stunning 8,000-square-foot home designed by architect Daniel Roulades, on the market. The splendid Noyac home, with drop-dead interiors by Muriel Brandolini, is still languishing on the market. With a recent price chop (from $16.995 million to $17.995 million) and all the ink that spills whenever the NBC veteran makes a Monopoly move, we predict that it will go soon.

The Main Street mainstay will be shuttering. We hear that the price to buy out the ten-year lease including equipment is $625,000. That’s a lot of cupcakes! s 2017 begins, an active year is anticipated for Hamptons real estate in both the rental and sales markets. The Villages of Quogue, Westhampton Beach, and Sag Harbor are hot spots, waterfront is always desirable, and new construction is in great demand. With inventory slowly shrinking, prices starting to rise, and interest rates about to creep up, a steady sales market is expected. The Hamptons continues to be a popular destination for those seeking an exciting and glamorous lifestyle. Judi Desiderio of Town & Country Real Estate expects “2017 to be vastly better than 2016 in both rentals and sales, but primarily sales. In particular the high end – since the stock market closed out last year with a strong performance and is poised to do even better this year. If there were more inventory under

a million, that would clearly see the most number of sales, but many of our markets are cost prohibitive. I predict we will see new ceilings in many segments. Inventory in the Hamptons is low for good product in most categories, though there are a few pockets that are over saturated and will certainly result in some great deals.” Judi exclaims, “I’m so looking forward to a fabulous year.” Zachary and Cody Vichinsky of Bespoke Real Estate predict, “A strong year for high-end rentals and increased confidence in the high-end sales market due to a strong economic climate. The relatively low inventory on the high-end ($10M+ market) will lead to increased interest in off-market opportunities – Bespoke’s specialty. We’re very optimistic about the 2017 sales market.The price point around $1M is very active, at least west of the canal. As always, Quogue is hot with very little inventory in the $2M-$3M range. As inventory dwindles, prices will start to tick up.” Gene remarks, “It’s a positive sign that the stock market is way up.The big question is how the first few months of the presidency will affect the stock market, the economy, and consumer sentiment in general.”

L

iving on the East End most definitely has its perks. Home to some of the most beautiful and prized land in the nation, it’s also a place where our friends and neighbors are among the most notable people in the world. Here’s what they’re up to right now. If there were such a position as President of the Hamptons, the honor would mostly likely be bestowed upon Amagansett resident Alec Baldwin. The ubiquitous actor and philanthropist has his fingerprints on everything from funding local arts and cultural organization to his own personal domination of the world’s small and large screens.

Most recently, Mr. Baldwin has commandeered the Big Three on TV. While he’s been most visibly lampooning American politics on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” for which he’s being considered for what would be his 17th career Emmy nomination, the busy entertainer is now in his second season manning the skinny mic made famous by Gene Rayburn in the 1970s as host of ABC’s “Match Game” reboot. Additionally, the star is now reportedly in talks with CBS as producer (and possible star) of the drama series “Crooked Brooklyn” based on the book of the same name written by Michael Vecchione, which is now in development. Productivity runs in the family at Baldwin’s house. His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, just published her first book, “The Living Clearly Method: 5 Principles for a Fit Body, Healthy Mind & Joyful Life.” Previously, the Yoga Vida co-founder and popular Instagramer has been heretofore best known, in her own words, as “the woman married to Alec Baldwin who does yoga poses in unlikely places.”

Speaking of famous South Fork spouses, East Hampton’s Jessica Seinfeld has another new book coming out. “Food Swings: 125+ Recipes to Enjoy Your Life of Virtue and Vice” will arrive on bookshelves in April. Her previous literary efforts include the New York Times bestsellers “The Food Swings: 125+ Recipes to Enjoy Your Life of Virtue and Vice,” “Double Delicious: Good, Simple Food for Busy, Complicated Lives” and “Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food.” Not to be outdone, her husband, Jerry Seinfeld, has his own new career news. The wildly successful comic has driven his popular web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” over to Netflix. The deal includes access to each of his previous nine seasons of the series, which had been streaming on Sony’s Crackle digital network, in addition to a new 10th season and two new standup specials.

And whilst on the subject of British happenings, Sir Paul McCartney, who also has a home in Amagansett, is dropping the tenth release of his multi-Grammy album, “Flowers in the Dirt,” in March. Included in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection, the 1989 release gets a multi-format reissue, which is perfect for fan’s who can’t make it to Japan to catch the almost 75-year-old Beatles’ front man’s “One on One” tour dates in April. Can’t get enough of the Fab Four? Then be sure to check out “Eight Days a Week,” the documentary by Ron Howard about the touring years between 1962 and 1966, which has been nominated for a slew of awards across the universe.

For the serious reader, Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad” is the best of the best of the past year, according to Amazon editors. The number-one New York Times bestseller, written by the MacArthur Fellowship winner and author of “Sag Harbor,” is a National Book Award winner.

Music and art fans who frequent the city will be happily surprised to see the face of former Springs resident Lou Reed gracing the tiled walls of the brand-new Second Avenue Subway station at 86th Street, which opened on New Year’s Day. The 9-foot-tall mosaic portrait by Bridgehampton-based artist Chuck Close one of 10 in his “Subway Portraits” series in mosaic and ceramic tile. He was only one of four artists chosen by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to install on the recently extended line. The permanent works are part of the largest permanent public art installation in New York State history.

Across the pond, the classically fashionable East Hampton resident/entrepreneur/philanthropist Ralph Lauren is making his own version of the next best seller by opening up Ralph’s Coffee & Bar in his eponymous Regent Street shoppe in London last month. The multi-talented designer, whose name is synonymous with all-America style, also has Ralph’s outposts in New York and Paris.

And lastly, cheers are in order for North Haven resident musician/author/restaurateur Jimmy Buffett, who will be serving up his “Escape to Margaritaville” on Broadway in spring 2018. The musical will feature old and new tunes by the king of the Parrotheads and is scheduled for its world premiere in May in La Jolla, California, followed by preview dates in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago.

GETTING A GREEN LIGHT T 2017 COLOR OF THE YEAR EVOKES RENEWAL & HOPEFULNESS

is the season for the Pantone Color Institute to declare its color of the year. For 2017 it is shade number 15-0343, AKA “greenery” -- a bright “yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring.”

The color authority doesn’t just pick a random hue. Its researchers spend the prior year observing trends from fashion to décor. What they noted: fashion houses from Michael Kors to Gucci showed the leaf green color on their runways. Green also showed up in other products including a new Mercedes roadster – and this is a bit of a stretch – green smoothies. I guess all that kale’s influence is wide ranging. “Greenery” is an antidote to the stressful world we find ourselves in, according to Pantone spokesperson Leatrice Eiseman. It represents, she says, a sense of renewal and hopefulness. Amen. But is it turning up in the Hamptons? We spoke to local experts to find out what colors are showing up in Hamptons homes.

“As an outdoor and indoor-focused home and garden furnishing resource, anything natural and green is perfect for Mecox and our clients,” says Mecox Gardens’ owner Mac Hoak, who recently commissioned New York ceramist Chris Spitzmiller to make custom colored spring green chargers and marbleized green plates. “I have also loved featuring [abstract artist] Leslie Milsten’s amazing artwork in our two Hamptons stores.” Milsten’s pieces, with their myriad shades of bright green, seem to conjure up the birds and the bees. “We also have leaf green garden stools. special is that you have a little bit of everything – ocean, beaches, farmland and lush lawns.” Hence, blues and greens are his go-to Hamptons hues with Pantone’s Greenery creating the “perfect tone for a sophisticated and lively space.” He pairs it with neutrals such as a muted olive and contrasts it with” hits of turquoise” to forge “an energetic palette.”

Sea Green Designs It’s no mistake that interior designer Shannon Willey calls her design firm and Jobs Lane home furnishings boutique Sea Green Designs. “My interior design is inspired by our coastal surroundings,” she says. “I’m always incorporating shades of blues and greens into my work.” Yet – do you notice a theme cropping up? – her backdrops are neutral while she reserves “pops of color” as accents. While she is not using Greenery at the moment, she says: “I will be incorporating it in accent pieces on future projects.” Her shop also carries several small landscape paintings “with that refreshing feeling that Pantone refers to. I can see them working well in a small space.”

Elsa Soyars Interiors Elsa Soyars, head of her eponymous interior design firm, has been using Greenery, or at least leafy greens, for the last two years. “Greenery is a great fresh color that has a Pop Art feel,” says the designer who works between the Hamptons and New York. “It’s a very energizing modern color.” It is also easily mixed with other colors such as whites, greys, turquoise and teals, says the designer who has used it in art, upholstery and accessories. “You’re not limited to how you can play with it.”

Debra Geller Interior Design East Hampton interior designer, Debra Geller, is not enamored of Greenery unless it is used as an accent and mixed with other colors such as teal or a warm hue like orange. Instead, Geller is taking her color cues from Benjamin Moore, which has named its paint, Shadow 2117-30, as the company’s color of the year. And it couldn’t be more different than Pantone’s Greenery. Shadow is a deep purple, “rich, royal and elegant,” according to Geller. “Dark colors create a sensual mood,” she says. Color is a huge factor in her work. “The first thing I ask my clients is what colors they love and don’t like. Color can affect your mood greatly.” For a bedroom she chooses soothing shades such as light lavenders and blues, and of course white. She makes sure to check that a home’s colors “look good with the colors in your closet.You’re literally wearing your house all day long, so you want to paint it colors that make you feel good.” But she has a word of warning: “Don’t pick colors at sunset.” Light at that time of day impacts perception. “Put colors on a wall in the morning and look at them throughout day.”

electing her most special space at her 20acre property in Water Mill is easy for Jill Rappaport. Even though she has plenty of places to choose from at her “The Last Buck Ranch,” including a giant 7,000-square-foot log cabin-style home that has graced the cover of Architectural Digest, a smaller camp-style replica version guest house, two bespoke barns with corresponding accessory structures, and woodlands, pastures and paddocks galore, plus her very own pond. But there’s only one spot—the animal corner—that truly stands out for the award-winning animal advocate, bestselling author, television personality and veteran “Today” show correspondent. Located a few hundred yards from her Southwesternmeets-Adirondack-style guesthouse, where she prefers to spend her time rather than the sprawling mansion made of timber, is a two-story red-andwhite country-style barn that Ms. Rappaport personally sketched out, designed and outfitted. That’s the spot that’s home to the real estate that holds the most sway over her heart—not because of its beauty or style, of which it boasts plenty, but rather because it’s the place where her five rescue dogs and two of her six rescue horses like to get together for their daily four-legged meet and greets.

The animal lover and shelter adoption advocate says she likes to give her rescued pets the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy the great outdoors as often as possible. And when they do head outside, it’s inevitable that their first stop is the animal corner. That’s where her “gentle giant” 110-pound bulldog Petey; dachshunds Rubie and Oscar Mayer; a perky Havanese named CJ; and Stanley, a 6-foot-tall standard poodle who fancies himself a lap dog, bound over to say hello to their equine brothers and sisters. Stanley, in particular, “loves to jump up and smell the horses,” reports the Puppy Bowl “Pup Close and Personal” segment host for Animal Planet and creator of pet playthings and accessories, such as the Shelter Shake dog toy, which is frequently featured on QVC.

It looks like a country farm house.” Walking along the picturesque path from her rustic home to the horses’ house, she adds, “It’s important to me that the horses and the dogs live as well as we do. If it’s not good enough for my animals, it’s not good enough for me,” she says. “Take last night, they had fresh salmon. I had Fritos,” she laughs.

“That’s my gathering place of all my fur angels and rescue animals,” she says of the visiting that occurs between her beloved pooches and Happy the horse and her stable mate Madison. “I call it my animal gravitation corner because that’s where the whole menagerie ends up whenever they can.”

As if on cue, Happy the horse (whose demeanor matches her name) saunters over to one of the open double barn windows of her expansive stall to greet her savior, and Rubie, CJ and Stanley. The gentle beast tilts her beautiful brown head down in order to receive Stanley’s affectionate attentions, then she gives CJ a kiss on top of the head, with a little boost up from Ms. Rappaport, and then takes a few moments to look after Rubie, who is frenetically prancing around next to the stall door. The adored equine then accepts a few pets from the humans as she sniffs the air, and our pockets, in search of treats.

Surrounded by acres of bucolic beauty and wooded land, and next door to a pasture and split-rail enclosed riding ring, the custom barn is “one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen,” says Ms. Rappaport. “It’s got antique

RUSSIANS PAINT SAG HARBOR

PLEIN-AIR ARTISTS DISPLAYED AT GRENNING GALLERY

his past fall, Sag Harbor’s Grenning Gallery, known for showing the works of classically trained artists, hosted a trio of Russian plein-air painters to capture the essence of Sag Harbor on canvas. The event was led by Ben Fenske, one of the most prominent painters in gallerist Laura Grenning’s stable.

It was this stroke of kismet that produced a body of works that we all can recognize. All that architecture also makes “their prowess visible,” according to Grenning. “You can’t fudge a building.” All produced so many paintings — 10 to 15 each — that Grenning had to rent a larger space in which to show them. While many sold during the November show, there are several left that the gallerist plans to mix into future group shows.

Fenske, admired widely for his light yet vigorous brushwork, is an American who divides his time between Sag Harbor and Florence, and who studied at the Russian Academy of Art, among other prestigious institutes. Wanting to share Sag Carl Bretzke’s rendering of the Sag Harbor’s wonderful landscapes, he invited three of Russia’s most notable artists – all of Harbor Cinema is the last painting whom had never visited the United States – of that iconic structure. to set up their easels around town. The way that Fenske works is to drive around Sag Harbor’s environs until he finds his subject, a method he tried with his Russian guests. But it was a disaster: each had a different aesthetic and didn’t appreciate having to paint something that didn’t appeal. So, Fenske hatched another plan. After dropping the group off in town for coffee, he left them and went off on his own — forcing the artists to set up their easels on Main Street.

The Artists Perhaps it was all that caffeine that inspired Oleg Zhuravlev to set his sights on the new eatery in town, Grindstone Coffee and Donuts. The awardwinning painter happened to set up his easel during the village’s Halloween parade, a spectacle that mesmerized the Russians, who had never seen anything quite like it. “A lot of people who watched him painting came to the show to see it,” says Grenning.

Victor Butko, who was born into a long line of artists and has been mentored in painting since the age of eight, is the youngest artist exhibiting at Thomas Kearns McCarthey Gallery, one of the foremost United States dealers of Russian Impressionist art. His subjects included a local yacht club and what Grenning declares “one of the show’s coolest images,” the triangle where Madison and Main Street join. Both demonstrate his “topnotch Russian draftsmanship and accurate sense of local color.” And his dock scene “looks like Whistler, poetic and peaceful.” Irina Rybakova, whose art appears in museums and collections around the world, is the most famous of the three. The landscape master’s works sold the most at the show. “There was a great one of Madison Street that captures those autumnal vibrations.” There were also several American painters in the show including Carl Bretzke from Minnesota. We bring him up because his painting of the Sag Harbor Cinema, painted in early November, is the last one of that iconic structure.

A NEW BRIGADE OF BOLD YOUNG CHEFS TAKE PARIS

ot so long ago, Paris had a reputation as being a city in gastronomic decline, one whose hallowed culinary traditions have been overshadowed by new ones created by inventive upstarts in Barcelona and Denmark. But that’s not the case anymore. For every stodgy Paris restaurant that is coasting on past glory, you’ll find a fantastic one run by a talented young chef. Rejecting the formality of classic French restaurants, this new wave of chefproprietors is waking up the once hide-bound Parisian food scene. Many of its exponents trained under the masters, and often eschew luxury ingredients and fancy interiors. On the whole, they offer incredibly good value for exciting, sophisticated food that might best be described as multicultural--not ‘fusion’ but a happy marriage of French flavors and global influences. Here are some of the most interesting of the new wave restos. Some are recently opened and others have quickly become modern classics. All are worth a visit. Le Servan. The recipient of a Le Fooding Guide ‘Best Bistro’ award, Le Servan is an expression of chef Tatiana Levha’s Franco-Philipinne origins. Levha, who trained under Pascal Barbot and Alain Passard, cooks like a dream. Her signature dishes include fried duck hearts and black pudding wontons. leservan.com Jones. Lively small plates restaurant in the Bastille district with a market-driven menu and excellent natural wines. jonescaferestaurant.com Mokonuts Café and Bakery. This tiny rustic storefront on a non-descript street in the Bastille district is run by Omar Koreitem (behind the stove) and Moko Hirayama (an ex-pastry chef at Yam’Tcha), and its daily changing menu is a reflection of the couple’s shared sensibilities. Recent lunchtime

offerings featured roast pumpkin and kale with tahini sauce and roast sea bass on a purée of brussels sprouts. Mokonuts only serves breakfast and lunch, but the shop operates as a take-out place and café all day. Be sure to try Hirayama’s superb Middle Eastern and Japanese-inflected patisserie. The tahini cookies and the chiffon cake with chai cream are winners. Advance booking essential. Restaurant Frenchie. When Gregory Marchand opened this small gastro-bistro on rue de Nils, in the Sentiers district, critics were dazzled by the Nantesborn chef ’s beautifully simple cooking. Think fennelscented gazpacho with yellow fin tuna or a perfect roast beet and herb salad in a warm hibiscus ‘soup’ or squid ink gnocchi. Marchand, who cooked at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen in London and Gramercy Tavern in New York before he opened Frenchie, has since taken over the block. There’s a wine bar and a take-out shop, Frenchie to Go, which the French food site Omnivore calls ‘a masterpiece of Parisian street food,’ all on the same street. If you plan to dine at the former, you’ll want to book far in advance as it remains one of the hottest tables in town. frenchie-restaurant.com; frenchietogo.com Yam’Tcha. Chef Adeline Grattard, an alum of Pascal Barbot’s L’Astrance, turns out carefully considered, elegant renderings of Franco-Chinese cuisine in its new location on the Rue Saint-Honoré in the Les Halles quartier. (Watercress velouté, foie gras, and oysters is one such rendering; pollack, potatoes, and housemade XO sauce is another.) Grattard’s husband, the tea master Chi Wa Chan, will pair each course with fine tea or a wine from the restaurant’s staggering list. And if by chance you can’t score a table at Yam’Tcha, visit the nearby Boutique Yam’Tcha.

Housed in Yam‘Tcha’s original stone-walled space, the owners have converted it into a tea room and takeout shop selling Vietnamese steamed buns or baos filled with—what else?— Comté with caramelized onions or other Gallic-Asian options. Booking well in advance is imperative. yamtcha.com Breizh Café. This small restaurant in the Marais sets the standard for crêpes and galettes (galetes are buckwheat crepes with savory fillings.) The kitchen sources impeccable ingredients from Brittany from fresh-milled organic buckwheat flour to cultured butter and it handles them with care. For a perfect meal, you might start with a crisp galette filled with raw milk Camembert and ham, garnished with a scatter of salad leaves tossed in a cider vinaigrette, and and finish with a salted caramel crêpe. Whatever you order, make sure to accompany your meal with a bowl of hard cider or fermented milk (the second tastes like the best kefir you’ve ever had). Sublime. Chef Willam Ledeuil, a disciple of Guy Savoy, puts to rest the myth that all chefs use prodigious amounts of butter. His Franco-Asian inflected dishes have clean bright herbaceous flavors that have won him no end of acclaim. Signature dishes include fresh marinated sardines with tomato-ginger jam and slow-cooked wild salmon with lemon grass drizzled with a tomato-cumin vinaigrette, and lamb shoulder with tamarind-miso sauce. ory Conway is an artist who happens to paint floors. Well, he paints other areas of the house, but painting floors, he says, “is where my heart is.” He is also a painter in the traditional sense, spending time in his Springs studio laying paint on canvas. In his 25-year career he has focused on several aspects of the decorative arts including restoration, tackling projects such as Guild Hall in East Hampton and the First Presbyterian Church in Southampton. And let’s not forget the classic yacht he rebuilt and refinished. The Dublin born and bred artist has a reputation for the fine finishes in his interior and exterior painting both commercial and residential. For one of the Ralph Lauren stores in East Hampton he veered away from the posh country house look of inside the store to apply high-gloss oil enamel to the exterior. The resulting “showcase effect” so impressed the powers that be in the company’s corporate headquarters that

Conway was dispatched across the country as far afield as La Jolla to transform other stores. Heading home from one such project he received a last-minute call at the airport beckoning him to reroute to San Francisco, where he was tasked with revamping an outpost of Club Monaco (an apparel chain owned by Polo Ralph Lauren). “I had to take over and redo something that hadn’t been done properly. It had taken three men five days but it took me alone less than a week, working by hand.” And he didn’t even have his tools in tow. Conway’s go-to finish is almost always a high-gloss sheen. “It exudes quality and luxuriousness,” he says. And it “holds its brilliance,” lasting twice as long “if done properly,” as the more popular semi-gloss and satin finishes. But Conway’s true love is painting floors. He painted the floor of Tory Burch’s East Hampton shop twice.

“I didn’t want to do it in a generic way where you stencil a pattern and put clear coats on top.” Instead he “wanted to do something very special.” His process was to “drop the paint onto the surface,” a technique that resulted in “one coat having the effect of several coats. I wanted the pattern to lift off the floor with an embossed effect.” For his second floor, he had a huge stencil made up in New York. Then he hand painted off-white atop a deep purple background (the colors were dictated by Burch) till he felt that the pattern “floated,” he says. In keeping with a fashion house theme, he “wanted to make a textile finish – loose and gay – a twinkling effect.” Meanwhile he’s in demand by decorators to put his talent to work on residential floors. He has painted many a decorative floor. And he’s huddled by his studio’s woodburning stove rendering dynamic paintings intended to hang in modern homes.

bsence really does make the heart grow fonder for some East End couples.

A famously happy example can be found in Ina and Jeffrey Garten. The East Hampton- and Southport, Connecticut-based super duo have taken being apart in stride during their 50-plus years together. As anyone familiar with Ms. Garten’s “Barefoot Contessa” Food Network television show knows, she and her doting husband live in different states during the week and cozily couple up on the weekend. “It’s Friday, and that means two things: Jeffrey’s coming home and chicken for dinner!” she says of his arrival from New Haven, where he’s the Dean Emeritus of the Yale School of Management.

The happy marriage has been built on the freedom they allow one another to pursue their dreams, she says. Her newest book, “Cooking for Jeffrey,” is an ode to her partner. “For Jeffrey who makes everything possible,” she writes in the foreword. “None of this would have happened without your love and inspiration.” Husband-and-wife writers Douglas Feiden and Lucette Lagnado, tried the “live apart together” arrangement for a year but found that it didn’t take. The veteran newspaperman, who met his wife while the two were working as journalists at the New York Post in 1988, made the decision to temporarily leave

the city to try his hand at writing for the Sag Harbor Express.Though he loved his job, Mr. Feiden eventually made the decision to return to his Manhattan nest in order to be with his journalist and author wife.

“I thought and believed that our love could transcend time and space and conquer the distances,” says Mr. Feiden “We had never been apart for long,” reports Ms. Lagnado of her 30 years of marriage. Missing her husband and traveling back and forth from the city to Sag Harbor every few days was “awful from the very beginning,” she says, adding that the situation was made even more painful because she knew how much her husband truly loved his new job. Ms. Lagnado’s friends, thought it would be the perfect marital arrangement, she reports. “They didn’t understand the sense of loss at all,” she says. “Instead, they told me that they were jealous of the freedom of the arrangement.” Joe and PJ Delia are currently living apart due to all-too-familiar circumstances. of her aging parents, Ms. Delia has been spending her days for the past six months at the musical couple’s Montauk home while her rock star/composer husband of 20 years is busy working on a film score at their music studio Rockland County house. “We both knew that this day would come,” says Mr. Delia, whose band is the focus of an upcoming documentary film by legendary filmmaker Abel Ferrara. Day-to-day life without his best friend by his side has been rough, he says, but the 3-hour distance has also fanned the flames of their already healthy romantic relationship. “I just went out last night for a quick visit and it was great.” “Oh yeah. And he just gets cuter every single time I see him,” purrs his spouse, who is the Thieves’ backup singer, band manager and promoter.The separation has been made easier by frequent visits and lots of texting, she adds, though she misses the physical contact, or “skin hunger” as she calls it. “Normally we’re in each other’s laps so being apart is even harder for us.” Difficult as being temporarily separated is, the physical distance is manageable because ultimately both he and his wife are secure in their relationship, says Mr. Delia. “I know it sounds cliché but it all works out when the love is there and the people are committed to each other,” he says. “Our relationship can withstand it, and our life together is sweeter because of it.”

T

here is a transition happening in how we supply and use energy. Below is a conversation with Gordian Raacke of Renewable Energy Long Island which promotes clean, sustainable energy use and generation on Long Island.

What is happening with the way we supply and use energy? Today’s antiquated energy system is very inefficient and convoluted. Let’s look at electricity for example. We still use the same basic model Thomas Edison used in 1882. We go far and wide, drill holes, dig sand pits that can be seen from space, remove mountain tops to obtain coal, oil, gas or uranium. We build massive pipelines and infrastructure to transport and process these fuels long distances. Huge, centralized power plants burn these fuels (or start an atomic reaction) to boil water to run turbines to produce electricity. The electricity goes over hundreds of miles of transmission wires, is reduced in voltage at substations and prior to using it at home - all so we can plug in a water kettle to make tea.

This is all incredibly inefficient, isn’t it? We’ve lost energy at every step.We have also polluted air and water, dumped enormous amounts of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, destroyed ecosystems and

impacted the health and livelihood of communities along the way.

That is the old system - what’s changed? With new technologies and changes in utility regulations, this model is changing. Solar systems allow consumers to generate their own power. Customers can reduce energy consumption through efficiency and energy management technologies such as smart thermostats.

How important is efficiency? Generating power at or near the point of use reduces or eliminates the loss of energy in the long supply chain of the old system. We still need a transmission grid but much of the old infrastructure can be eliminated or reduced with efficiency and renewable energy. Consumers also have tremendous opportunities to reduce waste. Super insulated, tight buildings need less energy to heat and cool them. Smarter, efficient appliances, lighting and controls avoids wasteful energy consumption.

What’s changed with regulations and the role of the utilities? In New York and other states, people can buy shares in smaller community solar arrays located off their

The centralized power model controlled by utility and power companies is beginning to crumble as consumers play a role in shaping the energy system by choosing their energy sources and becoming power generators themselves.

Some say the transition to efficiency and renewables is inevitable. If you agree with that, why do you think this is true? The transition to a carbon free economy through efficiency and renewables is not only possible but inevitable because it is so much better. Current energy practices are unsustainable and renewable energy is now cost competitive or less costly than conventional energy sources. A smart, decentralized energy system using locally available, clean, renewable energy in an efficient manner, where consumers own their sources of power, offers more benefits to more people. Clean renewable energy, efficiency and smart energy management technologies are replacing dirty fossil generation, dangerous nuclear power, and wasteful energy consumption just like laptops, cell phones and the internet have replaced typewriters, rotary phones and fax machines.

hat better way is there to celebrate Old Man Winter than with a good, old-fashioned fire in the snowy woods?” shares designer Astrid Insieme of Insieme House, who recently designed a permanent fire pit area in the backyard of her A-Frame country home, cast amidst a path of concrete pavers. “The process was relatively straightforward until, a freak snowstorm hit – with no forecast in sight – about twelve hours after we had poured the final round of concrete in the form! We rigged some heat lamps and covered the pit to keep the temperature above freezing so that the concrete would cure properly and we completed the project in two days.” Even with arctic temperatures and snowdrifts on the landscape, as long as the wine is flowing, there’s plenty of sustainable warmth to enjoy a winter wonderland. Astrid shares her easy to follow visual chronology of the fire pit project, below: 1. “In collaboration with Raymour & Flanigan, I styled our outdoor fire pit area with simple Adirondackstyle chairs in white (Mopani Outdoor Chair), and a loves eat bench in the same style (Hantom Outdoor Bench). The simple lines of the Adirondack-inspired design of the chosen seating are just perfect for our rustic setting, and conjure up a quintessentially New England vibe regardless of the season.” 2. “Because we’re in the throes of some seriously cold days, the only other elements that are necessary are some cozy layers in the form of plaid throws, pelts, Kilim pillows and lanterns for lighting.
